MC Mbakara, wife open up on daughter’s nine-year cerebral palsy struggle

Comedian MC Mbakara and wife, Lolo Mbakara, have opened up about their daughter Eke Mama’s nine-year struggle with severe cerebral palsy, a condition stemming from a lack of oxygen at birth.

In an emotional video on MC Mbakara TV on Saturday, the couple recounted the traumatic events of October 19, 2016 when their newborn’s fight for life began.

Cerebral palsy is a brain disorder that emerges in early childhood, impairing movement, muscle coordination, and posture due to brain damage before, during, or shortly after birth.

Causes include oxygen deprivation, brain bleeds, or disrupted brain development.

For Eke Mama, the couple said the damage occurred during a delivery gone wrong.

Lolo Mbakara described a harrowing scene in the labor room, stating: “I went into the labour room, and it was time to push. But somehow the baby was stuck”.

According to her, the hospital lacked functional oxygen, and staff resorted to pouring water from an empty tank onto the newborn in a desperate bid to revive her.

“When the baby came out, she wasn’t crying, she wasn’t breathing. They said, ‘Bring oxygen!’ — but there was no oxygen in the hospital”.

With no improvement, the family rushed Eke Mama to a teaching hospital, a journey that took over 30 minutes.

“We had to move her ourselves to the teaching hospital. By then, over 30 minutes had passed,” she recounted.

There, she was placed on oxygen for nearly two weeks, but doctors confirmed that the prolonged oxygen deprivation had caused irreversible brain damage, leading to severe cerebral palsy.

Faced with a heart-wrenching decision, the couple was advised by a medical colleague to remove Eke Mama from life support for a “stress-free life.”

They refused, stating, “One of my husband’s medical friends said, ‘If you want a stress-free life, take off the oxygen mask and let her rest,’ but as parents, we couldn’t bring ourselves to do it.”

Now nine years old, Eke Mama remains in a vegetative state, spending, as Lolo tearfully noted, “95 percent of her life sleeping.”

The Mbakaras have endured not only the emotional and financial toll of their daughter’s condition but also public scrutiny.

“People said we were ashamed of her,” MC Mbakara said, addressing years of online trolling. “But human beings can be mean. We didn’t want pity or ridicule”.

Turning pain into purpose, the couple has launched the Aya Kanu Aya Foundation to raise awareness about cerebral palsy and support affected families. “People call these children bewitched or possessed instead of understanding it’s brain damage,” Lolo said.

The foundation aims to educate Nigerians and provide emotional and financial assistance to parents navigating similar challenges.

“We know the stress it takes. We want to use our story to encourage others. You are not alone”, they said.

The couple expressed deep gratitude to MC Mbakara’s mother, who has been a pillar of support in caring for Eke Mama. “If not for her, we would have been drained,” MC Mbakara said. “We thank God every day for her and for our daughter’s life.”

Shun social media comparison illusions – AY Comedian

Comedian and actor Ayo Makun popularly known as AY, has urged Nigerians to resist the allure of social media comparisons, cautioning that much of the online content they admire is staged and far from reality.

In a video posted on Instagram, AY highlighted how platforms often showcase distorted images of luxury lifestyles, exotic vacations, and designer fashion, creating an illusion of effortless success.

AY revealed that many influencers and content creators fabricate their wealth and happiness, resorting to borrowing clothes, snapping photos in hotel lobbies to pass them off as homes, or posing with cars that aren’t theirs.

He described social media as a movie set where curated posts mask the truth, urging fans to prioritise personal growth over chasing unattainable ideals.

“Many of these people you envy are living on borrowed wigs, borrowed outfits, and borrowed lifestyles. Some take pictures in hotel lobbies and call them their new homes, while others pose with cars that don’t belong to them. Social media is like a movie set; not everything you see online is real,” he said in part.

In his caption, AY reinforced his message, noting social media pressure is real and that too many people are trying to keep up with lives that don’t even exist.

He pointed out that followers see the highlights but not the hustle, the smiles but not the struggles, stressing that peace of mind outweighs online validation.

He encouraged living one’s truth rather than a filtered version of someone else’s.

AY advised his followers to grow at their own pace, stay true to themselves, and embrace contentment over comparison.

“Social media pressure is real. Too many people are trying to keep up with lives that don’t even exist. You see the highlights but not the hustle, the smiles but not the struggles. Remember, peace of mind is greater than online validation.
Live your truth, not the filtered version of someone else’s,” he stated.

Cosmas Maduka slams ‘money na water’ phrase

Billionaire and Coscharis Group founder, Dr. Cosmas Maduka has condemned the trend of extravagant spending and flaunting of wealth at social events, criticising the phrase “money na water” that justifies such actions.

In a viral video, he called this a “dead value system” that promotes wastefulness and misguides youth.

Maduka stressed that true wealth, as shown by figures like Tony Elumelu and Femi Otedola, is marked by humility, not ostentatious displays.

“Tell me any wealthy man that has talked about money na water. I’ve never heard Tony Elumelu say money na water. I’ve never heard Femi Otedola say money na water and I’ve never said money na water,” Maduka said.

He said he exits events where such behavior occurs, decrying it as a harmful cultural shift.

“When I come to a function and you start those madness, start throwing money up on people, I behave like I’m going to the toilet and you will not see me again because these are dead value system, bad culture that we have learned and it became invoked in this state,” he added.

Urging Nigerians to reject this glorification of excess, Maduka warned it negatively influences the younger generation and called for such acts to be resented, not celebrated.

“When we are growing up, rich people don’t make noise. All these people that make noise, they never see money. Tweet it to people and say that I said so,: he said.

“If you make money, it makes you humble, it makes you keep quiet. We have embraced very deadly bad culture and we are using it to train our children. Money na water, those things should stop.

“You shouldn’t clap hands for people like that, you should resent it,”he added.

How I almost lost my life in June, by Adesua Etomi

Nollywood actress Adesua Etomi has opened up about a near-death experience she had in June, revealing that she underwent an unplanned surgery while in the United Kingdom with her husband, Banky W, and their two sons.

In an emotional Instagram post, the actress expressed deep gratitude to God for sparing her life, describing the ordeal as one that profoundly strengthened her faith.

“I could have lost my life in June of this year,” she wrote. “I went through a horrific incident that landed me in unplanned surgery. The surgery was ironically the least dramatic part of what I went through.”

Etomi said she and her family were in the UK for two speaking engagements when the incident occurred. “If even one single detail of that day were different, I wouldn’t be here today. I shudder when I think about it,” she added.

Reflecting on the experience, she said it renewed her awareness of God’s presence and grace. “Like a map, I can literally look back over that day and trace how His hands were all over that situation. There is nothing anyone can tell me — God is real!”

She urged her followers to live with kindness and gratitude, adding, “Let’s be softer, kinder, gentler, forgiving, patient, loving, and peaceful. I will never take another day for granted. Neither should you.”

Adesua, known for being open about her personal struggles, had earlier this year shared how she battled hyperemesis during pregnancy, supported her husband through surgery for a cancerous tumor, and underwent an emergency C-section in 2024.

Despite her challenges, she said she remains thankful, using her story to inspire others to hold on to faith and hope.

  • Tiwa Savage addresses feud with Seyi Shay

Tiwa Savage addresses feud with Seyi Shay

Music star Tiwa Savage has revisited her long-standing rift with fellow singer Seyi Shay, offering new insight into their much-publicised 2021 salon confrontation.

Speaking in an interview on Off Air with Gbemi O and Toolz on YouTube, Tiwa explained that the conflict stemmed from a diss track and false allegations that she had attempted to sabotage the careers of other female artists.

She dismissed the claims as baseless, stressing that she has always been committed to uplifting and supporting women in the Nigerian music industry.

“I would never do that — I’m so pro-women,” Tiwa said.

“If you do something to me, I will let you know. I don’t have to let you know online. Like the whole shade thing, I’m not going to pretend like you and I are cool in a salon when you did a diss track,” she stated, referencing the tension sparked by Seyi Shay’s verse in the 2017 *Fvck You* Challenge by Kizz Daniel.

The ‘All Over’ hit maker expressed shock at hearing rumors that she had allegedly “blocked bags” for Seyi Shay and Victoria Kimani.

She said, “That was painful, and I didn’t know where it was coming from. Till today, maybe I need to have a conversation with Shay.

“I heard that they thought I blocked their bag. How? If you’ve heard from anybody that I tried to block your bag, mention the person so I can address it”.

Tiwa also debunked the sabotage narrative by recounting how she lost a major Pepsi endorsement deal to Seyi Shay during her pregnancy with her son, Jamil.

“When I got pregnant and had Jamil, I was taken off a Pepsi campaign, Longer Throat, and Shay was booked on it.

“Go back and check it, Shay was a brand ambassador; I wasn’t.

“I was taken off because I couldn’t snap back in time. So how am I stopping other people’s bags? I wasn’t even mad. I got in the gym and got my body back,” she added.

The 2021 salon altercation, which became a viral moment, saw Tiwa confronting Seyi Shay over their strained relationship.

While Seyi Shay previously claimed she attempted to mend fences, Tiwa’s recent comments signal the feud was fuelled by deeper industry misunderstandings and rumours.

The tension between the two artists, which began in 2017, has simmered for years, marked by subtle jabs and public drama.

Afrobeats singer Iyanya has appealed for greater empathy toward celebrities, especially men, who face intense pressure under the spotlight.

In a post on X, the singer reminded fans that public figures are human beings with emotions and personal battles, despite the glamour associated with fame.

Iyanya added that male celebrities, in particular, often endure the burden of concealing their vulnerabilities to meet public expectations of strength and composure.

“For male celebrities, perhaps there may be an even deeper level of struggle to come back up when one has hit a low — because men are wired to be stoic, not show vulnerability, not ask for help, or they’d be considered weak,” he added.

One million streams in Nigeria lesser than UK streams – Johnny Drille

Singer and songwriter, Johnny Drille, has shed light on the challenges musicians face in earning a living from music streaming in Africa.

Drille, in an interview on CreativiTea podcast, revealed that artists in Nigeria earn significantly less from streaming compared to their counterparts in countries like the UK.

According to Johnny, while a million streams from Nigeria might earn an artist around $300, the same number of streams from the UK could generate as much as $5,000.

He said, “If your 1 million streams are from Nigeria, it’s probably like $300. But the same number from the UK could be around $5,000.”

This stark contrast highlights the difficulties African artists face in making a sustainable income from their music.

Despite the impressive numbers on streaming platforms, the returns often don’t reflect the effort and creativity that goes into producing the music.

However, Johnny Drille remains optimistic and encourages upcoming artists to stay focused and persistent.

He said, “It might be tough early on, but if you believe this is your path, just keep pushing. At some point, it will happen for you.”

He advised them to look beyond streaming revenue and focus on building a career through live performances, brand endorsements, and global exposure.

According to him, the bigger money often lies in these opportunities, and with dedication and hard work, artists can eventually reap the rewards of their craft.
