A socio-cultural group, the Benin National Congress (BNC), has condemned the promotion of violence by politicians, ahead of the September 19 governorship election.
BNC, through its president, Aiyamenkhue Edokpolo, said in Benin that the build up to the governorship poll was assuming a worrisome dimension, especially with the attack on personalities, rather than issue-based campaigns.
It frowned at attempts by politicians to drag personalities of Benin extraction, including a billionaire businessman, Capt. Hosa Okunbo, into the political arena, noting that Okunbo had a right to associate with or support any governorship candidate of his choice.
The body said: “We urge the people seeking to undermine Capt. Okunbo and his businesses to desist.
“What we find appalling about the coming governorship election is the crass profiling and the vitriolic manner by which opponents of the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, are showing desperation.”
