Correctional Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) in Cross River State has promised to donate sewing machines and weaving materials to women inmates of Calabar Custodial Centre to boost their entrepreneurial drive.

COWA Chair Mrs. Linda Ndaekong made the promise when she led COWA executives to the Calabar Correctional Centre of Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS).

Mrs Ndaekong was impressed when inmates displayed woven necklaces made by them.

A correctional officer purchased a necklace at N5,000 for Mrs. Ndaekong.

The inmates were pleased with Mrs. Ndaekong’s promise to help them get materials used in weaving the necklace. They hinted they were also into sewing and would love to have a sewing machine.

Their spokesperson, who said they learnt the skills at the centre, called on the public to patronise them.

Mrs. Ndaekong said: “I am impressed with how you spend your time here. You are not prisoners, don’t look down on yourselves. You are undergoing correction. Some of you may have been innocent and some of you may have been guilty, but one thing is sure, see your time here as a phase in your life. Make good use of the time so that when you leave, you will be a productive member of the society.

“I have noted your requests and I want to assure you that they will be provided for you.”

The COWA visit was part of a series of events and services initiated by State Comptroller of the NCS, Imaikop Ndaekong, which featured the groundbreaking of a nursery and primary school block in the state headquarters office.
