President Bola Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio are among eminent Nigerians expected at the unveiling of Peace in the Southeast Project (PISE-P).

The chairperson of the Media and Communications Committee of the initiative, Mrs. Mary Ikoku, announced this in a statement yesterday in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

Mrs. Ikoku described PISE-P as a non-partisan advocacy organisation working towards the restoration of peace in the Southeast through a non-kinetic approach.

The committee chairperson said the unveiling ceremony would coincide with the grand reception organised in honour of House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.

Mrs. Ikoku also listed other prominent Nigerians that are expected at the event as the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, and members of both chambers of the National Assembly.

Others from the private sector are Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Chief Arthur Eze, media moguls and politicians across party lines, amongst others.

The royal fathers of the day are the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, and Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, together with members of the Abia Council of Traditional Rulers.

Mrs. Ikoku added that the event, being organised by PISE-P, in conjunction with the people of Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, Kalu’s constituents, is slated to hold at the Sports Arena in the local government’s headquarters.

She explained that the ceremony is being organised to appreciate Kalu’s “unwavering commitment to public service and outstanding contributions to the people of the South-East region and nation in general”.

    CNS warns personnel against sabotage

The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, has warned that any personnel of the Nigerian Navy caught conniving with oil thieves would be severely dealt with according to the law.

He said the Navy had recorded significant achievements against oil thieves and bunkerers, but “there are still cases of personnel colluding with criminals” to undermine its efforts.

The naval chief spoke yesterday during the decoration, shipping of stripes of 29 commodores, who were recently promoted to the rank of rear admiral.

Vice Admiral Ogalla said the newly decorated officers were selected based on their dedication to duty and loyalty to the service.

He said the officers would constitute the leadership of the Nigerian Navy and the Armed Forces of Nigeria in future.

He said: “As expected in every performance oriented organisation, the quality of leadership in the Nigerian Navy is essential for the optimal realisation of our objectives and set goals. Hence, despite the huge number of annual enlistments, only the most dedicated and loyal officers rise to the apex of this profession.

“I want you to bear in mind that you were selected based principally on merit and your proven track records and integrity throughout your service career. It behooves you to justify this confidence by contributing your best to the service and the nation in general.

“I congratulate you on being among the selected few that made it to this rank. Note that while it takes hard work to get to this height, it takes harder work to remain there.

“While I rejoice with each and every one of you, I urge you to justify the confidence the service and nation have reposed in you.”

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, urged the newly decorated officers to work harder in their sacrifices to the country.

  • ‘How CP Disu stopped robberies in Rivers community’

‘How CP Disu stopped robberies in Rivers community’

Residents of Elelenwo in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, have hailed the Commissioner of Police, CP Tunji Disu, for halting incessant armed robberies in their area.

It was gathered that on December 1, 2023 the state police command received a formal complaint from a victim, who was robbed of his belongings at Odani junction in Elelenwo by a group of armed men.

The robbery was said to be one too many, as the residents had reported similar operations within the same period by the gang to the command.

Police spokesperson SP. Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed yesterday that CP Disu immediately tasked the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to flush out the armed robbers from the area.

Iringe-Koko said: “In response to the police chief’s directive, the unit carried out stop-and-search operations and placed the area under surveillance.

“These crack operations led to the arrest of Azubuike Orji, 27, an indigene of Arochukwu in Abia State, who claimed to be a bus conductor.

“The suspect, who was released from the Nigerian Correctional Service a few months ago, was arrested with a locally made pistol. He confessed to working for the leader of the armed robbery syndicate, Anthony Augustine, revealing that his specialty in the gang was peddling drugs and servicing guns.”

Iringe-Koko said through intelligence-led policing, an auxiliary nurse, who turned out to be the wife of the armed robbery gang leader was arrested.

“Further interrogations led to the discovery of a seven-room brothel located in Odani, Elelenwo that served as a hideout for members of the syndicate.

“On December 10, 2023, the gang leader, Anthony Augustine, 22, was arrested at Green City Estate in Odani, Elelenwo, amid widespread jubilation from residents, as he and his gang had been a terror to the community.

“Items recovered from the suspect include an iPhone XX, suspected packs of marijuana, POS machines and locally-made pistols.”

The statement said the leader confessed to running the brothel as a guise for his underworld activities.

Iringe-Koko said: “Further investigation showed that he was involved in a case of murder and robbery and had recently been released from a correctional centre.

Investigations are ongoing as the police seek to arrest other members of the syndicate.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Tunji Rilwan Disu, celebrated the efforts of the men of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and encouraged residents of Rivers State to promptly report crime as it happens to enable the police apprehend criminals and nip crime in the bud.

“He also warned the public against buying used items, especially phones, regardless of how cheap they are, saying such purchases can lead to more significant problems.

“He advised youths to desist from seeking to make wealth, using dishonest means, as they will be at the mercy of the law when caught.

“He reiterated that the police command will not stop pushing to apprehend every suspect on the command’s wanted list and to rid the state of crime.”

Police deny compromising fake WAEC certificate probe

The police in Akwa Ibom State have denied compromising the investigation of Joseph John, who allegedly issued a fake West African School Certificate (WASC) to Miss Joy Samuel.

She had petitioned the Nigeria Police protesting that it granted bail to the suspect without her consent.

Police spokesman Odiko MacDon said in a statement that the command was not partisan in the matter.

He said: “Akwa Ibom State Police Command received a petition of forgery and conspiracy from Miss Joy Samuel, alleging that Mr. Joseph John gave her a fake West African Examinations Council (WAEC) result.

“On receipt of the petition, the Command’s Monitoring Unit was mandated to carry out a discreet investigation. The suspect was arrested on December 22, 2023 for interrogation.

”However, while investigation was in progress, as the command had written to WAEC to ascertain the true position of the result, Miss Samuel made a video that went viral, alleging that the investigation had been compromised.

“Her outburst did not deter the police from pursuing the truth. Our investigation showed that Joseph John and Joy Samuel were intimate friends at the time of writing the exam and collection of result.”

  • Alleged vote-buying: Adebutu reports to police in Ogun

Alleged vote-buying: Adebutu reports to police in Ogun

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State in the last general election, Mr. Ladi Adebutu, yesterday reported at the police headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, following invitation by the police in connection with alleged vote-buying and money laundering during the March 18, 2023 governorship poll.

Adebutu was said to have met with the Commissioner of Police, Mr Abiodun Alamutu, around 11am in company with some chieftains of Ogun PDP.

The former federal lawmaker returned to the country a few days ago after over six months sojourn abroad for what he revealed earlier as medical vacation.

Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has hailed the PDP governorship candidate for heeding its call to turn in himself to the police over the allegations of money laundering and vote-buying levelled against him and some members of his party by the Federal Government.

The APC had in a statement issued on Tuesday welcomed Adebutu back to the country and urged him to toe the path of honour by honouring the police invitation, “which he has evaded since April on the pretext of embarking on medical vacation abroad.”

“While it is commendable that Mr. Adebutu has finally honoured the police invitation, after eight months, to ward off any unpleasant consequences that his non-attendance would have caused him, we wish to urge the police authorities to use this case to serve as a deterrent to desperate politicians and prove to all that no one is above the law and that truly the law is no respecter of persons,” the party said.

APC advised that the politician should take a step further by accepting court papers, which bailiffs have been unable to serve on him since April 2022.

“Adebutu should take a step further to accept the court papers containing charges against him, so that he can enjoy his fundamental right to fair hearing,” the statement said.

“The police must investigate the allegations to the fullest, as even the PDP had publicly acknowledged in a statement dated December 9, 2023 that “Mr. Adebutu has been linked with the alleged offences of money laundering and vote-buying.”

The state government in a statement had announced that the 13th month salary promised by the governor would be paid on December 27.

In a statement, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Edo State Council, Comrade Chief Odion Olaye (JP), said workers in the Edo State civil/public service are grateful to Governor Obaseki for the show of love, care and compassion for their welfare.

    • Shaibu urges party leaders to shun divisive politics, intimidation
    • Dan Orbih accuses Obaseki of high handedness

Edo State Deputy Governor Comrade Philip Shaibu, who is a frontline governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has urged PDP leaders to shun divisive politics and intimidation.

He extolled the exemplary and pragmatic leadership qualities of PDP National Vice Chairman (Southsouth), Chief Dan Orbih, who is also the former Edo chairman of the party, noting that he had brought PDP members together.

Shaibu spoke yesterday at a Yuletide party hosted by Orbih for PDP members and people of Ogbona, his country home, in Estako Central Local Government.

He said: “That all of us are here to celebrate with our national leader speaks volume. It has further shown his leadership capacity.

“For a long time, we have not been able to gather like this, having this kind of get-together. For all of us to be here is a clear testament to Chief Dan Orbih’s leadership qualities. This is the leadership that the people can feel and touch. Let everyone subscribe to this kind of leadership, eschew intimidation that will further divide the party and jeopardise PDP’s chances of retaining Osadebey Avenue, the seat of power.

“Christmas is a period of love and sharing love is the greatest of God’s commandments. If you love your neighbour as yourself, this is the time to show it. If there are clothes you have not put on for the last three months, wash and iron them, look for and give to your neighbour that has none to wear.”

Orbih enjoined all governorship aspirants on PDP’s platform to give peace a chance and ensure unity, ahead of February 2024 primary election and September 21, 2024 governorship poll, for the best candidate to succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki on November 12, 2024.

The zonal chairman, who is one of the allies of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, said: “Edo governorship aspirants on PDP’s platform must shun political campaign music that is capable of dividing the party. Music like ‘Obaseki pepper dem ooo.’ The people have really seen pepper, and we do not want to see pepper again.

“We have all made sacrifices. Obaseki should also know that no sacrifice is too big for the growth of the party.

He should be ready to make that sacrifice for the party to remain on Osadebey Avenue (Government House, GRA, Benin), beyond November 12, 2024.”

Orbih also admonished that campaigns must be issue-based, in order to move Edo forward.

The elaborate get-together was also attended by another governorship aspirant on PDP’s platform, Anselm Ojezua, a lawyer; who is a former Edo Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) when Obaseki defected from APC to PDP on June 19, 2020, and a two-term representative of Oredo constituency of Edo State in the House of Representatives, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, who is equally a governorship aspirant on the platform of PDP.

  • Akeredolu: from the Bar to political podium

Akeredolu: from the Bar to political podium

It is the end of an era in Ondo State. Southwest is united in sorrow. The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) is in sober reflection; its rank is depleted. Above all, the Akeredolu family in Owo is hit by a blow of fate.

Yesterday, Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu (SAN), lawyer-son of a Christian priest, former President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) and governor of the Sunshine State, bade farewell after a long and protracted battle. He never revovered from the precarious ill-health, which had diverted his attention from governance for months.

He was the first Ondo governor to die in office, trailing the likes of Patrick Yakowa (Kaduna) and Danbaba Suntai (Taraba) who died in helicopter crashes, Senator Mamman Ali (Yobe) who died after illness and Sheu Kangiwa (Sokoto), who died in the course of polo game.

Akeredolu led a life of battles from childhood. After losing his cleric-father at a tender age, he embraced the reality of hard times and faced the vicissitudes of life with courage, a virtue that henceforth shaped his steps, career as a legal officer, politician, and administrator.

He was never given to frivolities. He had no room for prevarication. Ever forthright, he was opposed to any embellishment. Never diplomatic, he spoke the truth to power; unpretentious, outspoken, bold, brave, principled, strong willed, audacious and permanently fearless. He was a vocal advocate of justice who built a solid wall of restriction against oppression.

Either as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, NBA president, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), and later All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, governor, Chairman of Southwest Governors’ Forum, or Chairman of Southern Nigerian Governors’ Forum, he exhibited sterling qualities in times of ‘peace and war.’

Fondly called by his prefix, Arakunrin, and Aketi, his nickname, by his admirers, Akeredolu bestrode the political and governance space, the same way he was a colossus at the bar. He was not a politician without a second address. An outstanding lawyer, he was a Managing Partner at the law firm of Olujinmi and Akeredolu, which he co-founded with Chief Akin Olujinmi, a former Attorney General and Minister for Justice .

Akeredolu was born on July 21, 1956 in Owo to Reverend Ola Akeredolu and Lady Evangelist Grace Akeredolu of Aderoyiju family of Igbotu, Ese Odo, in Ondo State.  He started his primary education at Government Primary School in Owo. He proceeded to Aquinas College in Akure, Loyola College in Ibadan and Comprehensive High School, Ayetoro, for his secondary school education and Higher School Certificate.

Akeredolu attended the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) to study Law, graduating in 1977. He was at the Nigerian Law School in 1978.

He was appointed Attorney-General of Ondo State from 1997 to 1999. In 1998, he became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. He was Chairman of the Legal Aid Council (2005–2006). In November 2009, he faced allegations of corruption when the Bar Association’s third Vice-President, Welfare Secretary and Assistant Financial Secretary circulated a petition entitled: “Complaints against your fraudulent manifestations, violation of the NBA.” However, the allegations against him were reviewed and dropped by the National Executive Council of the NBA.

As an activist lawyer, he advocated for the rule of law, due process and sanctity of the ballot box.

He also called for vote or mandate protection.  In a lecture in December 2009, Akeredolu said no amount of electoral reform or judicial system could give Nigeria free and fair elections if Nigerians themselves refused to take practical steps to ensure that their votes count.

During the period of grave national emergency when President Umaru Yar’Adua was indisposed for a long time, Akeredolu said he ought to have handed over to Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan in an acting capacity. The position was backed by the NBA, which said he was authorised to speak on its behalf. The position gave an impetus to the invocation of the doctrine of necessity.

A Life Bencher, Akeredolu was Member of Council, Int’l Bar Association, 2008-2010; Member of Council, Pan-African Lawyers Union, 2008-2010; Chairman, Legal Aid Council (2005-2006); Member, Council of Legal Education (1997-1999); Vice Chairman, NBA, Ibadan Branch (1992-1994), National Publicity Secretary, NBA (1988-1989), member, National Executive Council, NBA.

In 2012, the NBA named its new secretariat in Abuja after him, with its president citing the reason being the need for “generational identification and recognition of those who had contributed immensely to the development of the association.

On February 4, 2022, he made Grand Patron of the NDLEA by the Chairman of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig-Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa.

In October 2022, the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) was conferred on Akeredolu by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Politics has always been in his blood from his campus days. A Student Union leader, he promoted robust debates and mobilised against inequality, injustice, corruption, arbitrariness and recklessness.

His disposition cast him in the mould of a progressive. In fact, Akeredolu was actively involved in the battle for the liberation of the Southwest from the conservative Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) forces. He was counsel to ACN governorship candidates whose mandates were stolen.

However, in November 2011, Akeredolu joined the fray. He was among the crowd of ACN governorship aspirants. Indisputably, he was the best. He flaunted his credentials as a respected president of the Bar and an experieced technocrat who understood the problems of Ondo State. His manifesto was captivating- agricultural development, fish farming for export, free education and healthcare, 30,000 jobs for youths in the first 100 days, roads, increased subsidies and greater local control over public spending.

On July 28, 2012, Akeredolu was selected as ACN governorship candidate at a congress in Akure. But, he was defeated by Governor Olusegun Mimiko of the Labour Party (LP).

Akeredolu never abdicated. Although he wanted to be National Legal Adviser of the party, he had to drop the bid as Dr. Muiz Banire (SAN) was favoured for the position. But, he started nurturing his political structure ahead of 2016. His Aketi Movement became unstoppable.

On September 3, 2016, Akeredolu defeated Dr. Segun Abraham and Olusola Oke (SAN) at the primary on the platform of the APC. On Sunday, 27 November 2016, he was declared winner of the keenly contested governorship poll. He defeated Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) of PDP.

Read Also: Akeredolu was a patriot, Mimiko mourns

During the first term, crisis erupted between him and his deputy, Agbola Ajayi. Thus, when he ran for a second term, he chose Lucky Aiyedatiwa as running mate. Akeredolu was re-elected in 2020, defeating Jegede  for the second time. He won in 15 of 18 local governments.

After securing a second term, he started drumming support for governorship zoning to Ondo South. That is why the district has the highest number of governorship aspirants, including Finance Commissioner Wale Akinterinwa, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, Oke, and Aiyedatiwa.

As governor, Akeredolu was a dogged fighter. He was the motivator of the initiative that led to the establishment of the security outfit, Amotekun,  which has reduced insecurity in the Southwest.

Akeredolu objected to the invasion of reckless herders and he demanded for state police, devolution of power and restructuring  to strengthen the capacity of states and governors as chief security officers. After the Owo massacre, he became more vociferous, decrying the over centralisation of the security architecture.

On a number of occasions, he was an ardent critic of the Buhari administration.

Akeredolu, who was Chairman of Southern Nigerian Governors’ Forum, mobilised his colleagues across parties to canvass presidential zoning to the South.

During the 2023 engineering, Akeredolu was a staunch supporter of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for president at the primary and general election.

However, in the last one year, Akeredolu’s health had deteriorated. He was flown abroad for treatment for medical condition in June.

He transmitted power to his deputy, Aiyedatiwa, in accordance with 1999 Constitution. He returned to Nigeria from Germany in September. He stayed in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

As controversy brew over his protracted ill-health and the state was enveloped in crisis, President Tinubu intervened twice to resolve the conflict.

Akeredolu will be remembered as a colourful politician; he was principled, honest and straightforward.

He was a believer in national unity in diversity.
