“The idea of a Legislative Agenda for the House is known to have been birthed during his leadership of the 4th House of Representatives.

“He is also reputed to have worked for a robust defence of the independence of the legislature, passage of impactful resolutions and landmark laws to ensure effective service delivery and people-driven development as Presiding Officer of the Green Chamber.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has asked four of its directors to proceed on retirement in accordance with a circular on the eight-year tenure policy for directors in the public service.

The commission’s National Commissioner and Chairman for Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, announced this in a statement yesterday in Abuja.

Although he did not give the names of the affected directors, the INEC spokesman said while two of them served as heads of department at the commission headquarters in Abuja, the other two served as Administrative Secretaries in the states.

Olumekun said those in the medical cadre were exempted from the directive.

The statement reads: “Following the Federal Government circular HSCF/SPSO/268/T3/2/37 issued on July 27, 2023, the commission has approved the implementation of a policy mandating all directors with eight years or more of service to retire from the public sector.

  • Plateau massacres as litmus test

    Plateau massacres as litmus test

Who is to blame for the Christmas Eve massacres in over 15 communities in Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State? Not only the unidentified assailants who attacked the communities but also the federal authorities, according to the state governor, Caleb Mutfwang. He said the attacks by armed groups were “unprovoked,” and called the violence “barbaric, brutal and unjustified.” The picture of destruction showed at least 160 fatalities and hundreds injured.

Mutfwang lamented that the Federal Government was partly responsible for the mass murder, saying, “Part of the problem we have is that so far, there have been no arrests, no prosecution.” He observed that under the administration of former president Muhammadu Buhari, the feeling of the people in Plateau State, particularly the victims of “these terrorist attacks,” was that “the terrorists were given official government backing to be able to terrorise them because little or nothing was done to repel these attacks.”

Attributing the continued attacks to settlers who want to acquire land in the state by force, he added that in Barkin-Ladi Local Government Area, “schools have been occupied by these terrorists for some years now. Not less than 64 communities have been displaced and the lands have been taken over by these marauding terrorists.”  According to him, “some of those schools have been occupied for the last three to five years. Children in those schools have had to relocate, and primary healthcare centres have been abandoned.”

Two days after the latest attacks, President Bola Tinubu directed security agencies to immediately move in, scour every stretch of the zone, and apprehend the culprits. He also ordered immediate mobilisation of relief resources for surviving victims of the attacks, and medical treatment for the wounded, assuring Nigerians that those responsible for the attacks would be brought to justice.

It remains to be seen whether the attackers would be caught, prosecuted and punished.  It is necessary to ensure that justice is done for deterrent effect. Against the backdrop of Mutfwang’s allegations, the Tinubu administration needs to demonstrate that the country has entered a new phase of zero tolerance for lawlessness and insecurity.

The raids on the affected communities were terrible. Governor Mutfwang’s allegations are alarming, particularly that the Buhari presidency shielded terrorists in the state from justice. The fresh massacres may well be the litmus test to determine whether the Tinubu administration has the necessary political will to make a difference security-wise.

  • Tinubu: Akeredolu, a fearless humanist

    Tinubu: Akeredolu, a fearless humanist

President Tinubu led other political leaders and eminent Nigerians in paying tribute to the deceased governor.

The president said: “It is a difficult task to have to pen a tribute and sing a dirge for a departing soul. It is a more difficult job in our African culture when one is compelled to do so for a younger person. Here am I having the difficult job of singing a dirge for Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, my beloved brother, confidant, political soulmate, and the Executive Governor of Ondo State.

“It is an impossible task to fully capture in words Rotimi’s towering figure and his human essence. Rotimi was a man who moved our nation towards equity, fairness and justice in his strident advocacy against every form of injustice in our country through the instrumentality of the law as a senior advocate, attorney-general of his beloved state, as President of the Nigerian Bar Association and Governor of Ondo State.

“In a challenging moment of our statehood when marauding agents of darkness spread their tentacles across our country, Rotimi was a strong voice in wilderness calling us to rethink our security architecture so we can have a more secure nation. His unrelenting advocacy led to the birth of the local police in the Southwest.

“Rotimi was a man of ideas and action. While he was with us, he taught us the power of action and service. In Ondo State, where he had the honour to serve as the governor over the past six years, he served his people with absolute loyalty, dedication, and forthrightness.

“His footprints dot the entire landscape of the state through the hundreds of kilometres of roads he built, the many schools he built, and healthcare facilities that he provided.

“During the dark hours when marauding agents of darkness visited the state and killed defenceless citizens where 40 worshippers of the Catholic Church of Owo were killed on June 5, 2022, Rotimi’s leadership qualities as a true statesman and compassionate leader radiated  brightly to the world. He was a mourner-in-chief, who guided his people through an agonising period. Today, I mourn a fighter and fearless defender of truth and the masses.

“My personal journey with Rotimi started as joint members of the progressive family. We fought many battles together to restore progressive governance in the Southwest, Edo State, and Nigeria as a whole. During this uncertain period, Rotimi was resolute and unflinching. He showed uncommon courage as a member of our legal team in our battles to reclaim our stolen mandates in Ekiti, Ondo, Edo, and Osun States. A gallant lawyer and one of the finest of the legal profession.

“I beckoned on him to contest for the governorship position of Ondo State in 2012. Even though he did not make it in his first attempt, his enthusiasm and determination to serve his people never diminished. He eventually made it to the Alagbaka Government House in his second attempt in the 2016 election, Since he was sworn in in February 2017, he had served the people with devotion.

“Rotimi has played his role well and left us untimely. We will never see his likes again. Let me tell the people of Ondo State that I am grieving with you. We will honour Rotimi’s memory and make sure his legacy of service is never forgotten.

”In my grief and sadness, I have telephoned his wife, Betty, and Acting Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to commiserate with them and urge them to take heart over this national tragedy.

“His death is a blow to our governing APC and the progressive family as we are diminished by it.

“I hope that his successor, Aiyedatiwa will hold steadfast to the vision of governance left by this towering political leader.”

    • ‘My team working’

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday reassured that Nigeria was in safe hands and that his team was working round the clock to turn around the economy.

Tinubu spoke yesterday at the Lagos State House in Marina where he was hosted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Describing the job before him as “monumental,”  the President reminded Nigerians that governance required the collaboration of all.

“It’s not a one-man job, but a collective effort,” Tinubu said, urging state and local governments to focus on Agriculture and Education to fight poverty and terrorism.

He acknowledged the prevailing challenges but assured that there would be light at the end of the tunnel.

The President once again likened the situation to labour pains which, he noted, are necessary to birth joy and happiness.

“We will work hard to give Nigerians the best of economy and opportunity you can imagine,”  Tinubu promised.

The President paused to mourn former Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and one-time  House of Representatives Speaker Ghali   Na’Abba.

According to him, power is transient which only God can give and take.

His words: “It’s a great homecoming for me and I am happy. This Presidency is not a one-man job; it’s a collective work; you have to be able to listen, decipher and tolerate and sometimes what you don’t expect will happen, as news about the deaths of Akeredolu and Na’Abba came up as I was preparing for today’s work.

“However, we see the value of life in the goodness we do, the result of which is a multiplier of all good things that we must cherish, not for us, but for our children and grandchildren.

“Nigeria is challenged, which has always been, but we will go through it. We are already seeing the ‘blossomness’ of our plans. A lot of changes will transform this economy, and the financial re-engineering of our country is ongoing.

“But, my team is working and we are determined to take Nigeria through the tunnel of hope, stability and successful economic prosperity.

“We recognise the hardship that people are going through, it’s a very good example of labour pain when mothers go through very excruciating pains.

“But, they soon forget this when they hear the noise of the baby and they cherish the smile forever. That is what Nigeria will be, I assure you. We will work hard to give you the best of economy and opportunities you can imagine.”

Responding  to requests by  attendees,   especially  the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, the President promised: “We will not abandon our cultural values, but give value to our traditional institutions.”

The President also praised Governor Sanwo-Olu,  his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, for “holding forth strongly and committing yourself to the values that we cherish together.”.

“This result-oriented approach has made Lagos the most viable in the country. We were abused and intimidated, but Lagos has survived and will continue to survive on the path of glory,” Tinubu added.

Rivers elders tackle Fubara over position on peace pact

Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum yesterday attacked Governor Siminialayi Fubara over his Christmas Day Broadcast in which he described the eight-point peace pact as not a death sentence.

The truce between Fubara and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, was brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

But, in an open Letter to Fubara, the group said “the proclamation is actually a death sentence,” contrary to the governor’s explanation.

The letter was read to reporters yesterday in Port Harcourt, the State Capital.

They were reacting to Fubara’s “Peace in Galilee”, Christmas Day message to the people, where he declared his commitment to implement his part of the agreement to ensure peace is instilled in the state.

Not a few had lauded Tinubu for his intervention but expressed dissatisfaction in the outcome of the presidential peace meeting.

The elders claimed that the agreement contradicts the rights of the people who voted Fubara into power and the constitution he swore to uphold.

They said the governor has no constitutional rights to implement the agreement which according to them, “is anti-people and lacks social, moral justice, even as they have been rejected by the people of the state.

The elders urged Fubara to allow the constitution to guide him in the bid to insisting on implementing the document.

They said: “Mr. Governor sir, you stated categorically that you are a principal participant in the entire saga and the Presidential Peace Proclamation is not as bad as being portrayed by those genuinely opposed to it.

“The proclamation is actually a death sentence as it breaches all legal and constitutional rights you swore to uphold.

“Mr. Governor, you have no constitutional or any other legal power to implement the Presidential Peace Proclamation.

“The forum commends your Excellency’s honesty and sincerity in accepting that Mr. President’s peace proclamation has elicited mixed reactions from our people and across the country.”

The Rivers Elders’ Forum is made up of elder statesmen, including former governors, their deputies, retired varsity professors, military officers and social activists among others, drawn across the Southsouth state.

Former Governor Rufus Ada-George read the statement on behalf of the group.

The statement reads: “The message of the Angels at Christmas is peace to all men and this indeed is our message to you, the government and the good people of Rivers state, based on our faith and belief as Christians, we accepted this angelic peace message over 2000 years ago.

“We accept your humility as shown in your Christmas Day Broadcast of December 25, 2023, to the good people of Rivers State.

“However, we the people of Rivers State do not see any peace in the so-called Mr. President’s peace proclamation.”

They noted that peace cannot be achieved on the face of injustice, insisting that “peace can only be practiced in a germane, truthful and just society, in this case, the environment in which the peace was brokered, showed no sensitivity to the people’s security, and socio-political interest.

“Mr. Governor, you also stated in your broadcast that the document offers a way and means of peace…peace at what cost?

“We state that you do not place too much premium on the assurances of detractors; rather be guided by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria you swore to uphold.”
