Osun CJ feud: JUSUN gets seven-day ultimatum to resume duty

Following the prolonged animosity of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Osun State chapter, with the embattled Chief Judge, Justice Oyebola Adepele-Ojo, which resulted in strike, the union has received seven-day ultimatum to resume duty.

JUSUN, led by Gbenga Eludire, had embarked on strike against Justice Adepele-Ojo after Governor Ademola Adeleke suspended her.

Condemnation has trailed the decision of the state government, as the National Judicial Council (NJC) has reinstated her.

A social justice organisation, World Institute for Peace, has threatened legal action against JUSUN.

The Executive Director of the organisation, Lamina Omotoyosi, said the ongoing strike by JUSUN in the state had disrupted the judicial process and denied citizens their right to a fair and timely trial.

He said the strike undermined the principles of justice and hampered the overall functioning of the legal system.

According to him, “we issue a seven-day ultimatum to the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Osun State chapter, to call off their strike and resume duties immediately. We believe dialogue and negotiation should be the primary means of resolving disputes, they encourage both parties involved to engage in constructive discussions to find a mutually beneficial solution.

“If the union fails to comply with this ultimatum, we will have no choice but to pursue legal action against the organisation.”

  • Lawmakers to confront Obaseki over Shaibu

Lawmakers to confront Obaseki over Shaibu

Most of the 24 members of Edo State House of Assembly, who belong to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party (LP), are set to confront Governor Godwin Obaseki “over the embarrassing and unfair allocation in the 2024 budget to the office of his deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu.”

It was gathered yesterday by our reporter that most of Edo lawmakers “were not happy over the shabby treatment of Shaibu and his office, concerning the deputy governor’s 2024 governorship aspiration.”

In the 2024 budget, a meagre sum of N300 million was allocated  to the office of deputy governor, as against N18 billion allocated to the office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG); N968 million to Head of Service; Speaker got N13 billion, while N19 billion was allocated to the office of the governor.

It was learnt that Obaseki was ready to use anything at his disposal to thwart the political aspiration of Shaibu, ahead of PDP’s primary election in February 2024, but the deputy governor was surprisingly waxing stronger.

A source said: “The 2024 Appropriation Bill that Obaseki hurriedly signed into law in the evening of December 15, 2023 is the latest of the series of missiles fired at Shaibu and indeed, office of deputy governor, with a view to destroying the institution.

“Before the controversial budget was passed by the lawmakers, there was disagreement among the legislators over the embarrassing allocation to the office of the deputy governor, leading to shouting matches at the executive session by many lawmakers, who raised objections to the fund that was allocated to the office of the deputy governor.

“The Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, later at the plenary, threw parliamentary decency to the wind, and disregarded all efforts made by his fair-minded colleagues to ensure that the right thing was done, as an unbiased parliament.

“It is obvious that Obaseki is determined to ridicule and punish Shaibu financially, in a bid to frustrate his governorship aspiration, forgetting that Shaibu is only an individual, while the office of deputy governor remains an institution, but Edo lawmakers are ready to challenge Obaseki, and the speaker may be the first victim.”

Our reporter also gathered that the PDP, APC and LP lawmakers in Edo Assembly have in the last few days been meeting regularly and intensifying efforts at ensuring justice for Shaibu and his office.

  • 2024 budget to unlock Abia’s potential, says Otti

2024 budget to unlock Abia’s potential, says Otti

Abia State Governor Alex Otti says 2024 budget will unlock the great potential that abound in the state and enable her to rise to greater heights.

He spoke during a reception held in his honour by the people of Aba South, at the School of Health Science and Technology, Aba.

Dr. Otti said the budget, which has been passed into law by the House of Assembly, will take the state “out of the deep hole that it found itself and release it so that it can fly.”

He hailed the leadership of the House, chaired by Emmanuel Emeruwa, the speaker, and every member of the Assembly for considering the budget.

He described the speaker, who represents Aba South State Constituency, as a gift to the state and expressed confidence in his leadership.

“I will like to thank Aba South for the gift of Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa. He is a rare gift to this state and this nation. I may not have known him for donkey years, but anybody you see and you are observant, even before the person does anything, you will know the type of someone that person is.

“The House of Assembly has a responsibility to elect its leadership. Ours is to support. I had no problem supporting Emmanuel Emeruwa, and just like he has said, he has done very well and he will continue to do well,” Otti said.

He thanked Aba residents for their support right from the beginning of his quest to lead Abia State in 2015, and restated his commitment to rebuild Aba, which he described as the “production, industrial and commercial hub of Abia State; maybe of the Southeast; maybe of Southern Nigeria.”

The governor, however, frowned at the attitude of the residents to waste disposal, warning that it would no longer be business as usual from January 2024.

“We may have done things wrong in the past, but we cannot continue to live in the past. This is why we are redefining the future.

“Whatever it takes, we are going to ensure this city is sparkling clean.

“So, I want to put all of us on notice that it may be difficult if you want to liter because we are not going to tolerate it.

“So, the change that you want to see has to begin with you,” he said.

Otti said more of the newly reconstructed roads in Aba by his administration would be inaugurated in January 2024.

He said work would begin by January on some of the very difficult but important roads in Aba, such as Obohia and Ohanku roads.

“We are going to use solid pavement (cement) technology,” he said as the crowd at the venue of the reception burst into applause and solidarity songs.

He reassured the citizens of his determination to use the resources of the state to work for her and vowed never to share the state’s money to individuals.

“If you have keyed into the vision of the government of the state; if what is important to you is the development of the state; if what is important to you is the welfare of the people; if what concerns you is that people finish working and they get their salary promptly before the month ends; if you are concerned about the payment of salary arrears; if you are concerned about treating our traditional rulers respectfully and giving them what is due to them; if what you are interested in is revamping our hospitals and ensuring that our schools are citadels of learning; if what you are interested in is that the roads are built and the money of the state is used judiciously, then you will not have problem with us.

“But I can assure you that you will have problem with us if you want us to start sharing money because I don’t have money to share. People’s money must be used to work for the people,” he said.

The governor, after the event, headed for Ngwa Road in Aba, where he inaugurated the automated solar-powered street lights recently installed on the over 3km road, turning on the lights one after the other as he walked.

He led the speaker, mayors of Aba North and South, Ide John Udeagbala and Chief Uchechukwu Wogu, some House of Assembly members, the Chief of Staff, Dr. Caleb Ajagba and many senior officials of the state government on the energy-sapping brisk walk, which lasted over 30 minutes, to inaugurate the lights.

  • ‘Security chiefs must tackle challenges to boost economy’

‘Security chiefs must tackle challenges to boost economy’

The Statistician-General of the Federation, Adeyemi Adeniran, has called on security chiefs to tackle insecurity to increase supply chain of the economy.

Adeniran made the call at a public lecture/unveiling of ‘Impart Economic Journal’ published by the Executive Director of Initiative for Leadership and Economic Watch, Splendour Agbonkpolor.

He said the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth recorded by the country was not sufficient enough to boost the economy.

According to Adeniran, when the environment is secured, people will have access to farms and produce more food in the market, which will force prices down.

He stressed that the country however needs security for the production of crude, saying ‘though the present security situation has not increased crude production, but had reduced oil theft and pipeline vandalism’.

Adeniran, represented by the Head of the National Account Division, Dr Baba Madu, said: “We need national security to grow the economy, like agriculture for instance, if we have a reasonably secured environment in place people can access their farms and produce more thereby increasing the supply chain of the economy. There would be more food in the market and that will force prices down.

“We need security for the production of crude, even though the present security situation has not increased crude production, oil theft has reduced, and pipeline vandalism has reduced too.

The economic growth in Q3 is 2.54, which is still not sufficient enough. To have reasonable growth, you need to have a triple increase more than the population growth rate, which is 2.6 – 2.8.”

He further explained that agriculture can produce raw materials that have linkages to all sectors of the economy, ‘and when there is an increase in the value chain there will be an increase in additional economic activities’, he noted.

Agbonkpolor said the theme of the event, ‘Public Private Partnership: The Key to Building Economic Resilience and National Security’, shows that no one can sit idle with the current Nigerian situation.

He said: “Nigeria’s problems are not natural disasters that happen in other countries. However, our problem is that of poverty which is man-made. Therefore, Nigerians have the responsibility to find solutions that will eradicate it and not God.

“Today’s event is most significant in the building of Nigeria’s economy; the issue addressed concerning Public Private Partnership is an area that is not fully optimised to bring about the rapid economic growth of the nation.

“The partnership between the Impart Economic Journal with the Raw Material Research and Development Council was to strengthen public-private partnership policy as an effective tool to create wider opportunities for economic activities in Nigeria and create jobs and income-earning avenues for unemployed Nigerians.”
