JAPA: We can’t find doctors to employ – CMD cries out

Prof Isah Adagiri, Chief Medical Director (CMD), Kogi Specialist Hospital, on Wednesday lamented the dearth of Medical Doctors in the state, which he said, calls for concern and drastic measures.

The CMD, who cried out during the 2024 budget appraisal and projection on the floor of Kogi House of Assembly in Lokoja, attributed the scarcity on Japa syndrome.

Adagiri explained: “In spite of Gov Yahaya Bello’s standing approval to the management of Specialist Hospital to replace any medical doctor that leaves the service for greener pasture, the doctors are not forthcoming.”

“Many doctors have Japa, and despite our willingness to replace them by employing new ones, they are no where to be found.

“It’s no longer news that a lot of doctors are moving out of the country in droves for greener pastures, a situation, which is negatively telling on our services as a hospital.

“There are lots of disadvantages in the crave for greener pastures by these doctors, who do all they could to earn every Kobo being paid them.

“But because of patriotism, someone like me can’t imagine myself leaving the service to work out of the country, ” he said.

The CMD disclosed that the Specialist Hospital recently lost a doctor, who left for Dubai to work, but died as a result of the hazards of working in a foreign country.

According to him, with a better welfare package, government could discourage and stop the Japa syndrome and allow for excellent health care delivery services in the hospitals.

“For us, in specialist hospital, we always liaised with you, the House Committee on Health and Social Services, to get better welfare packages for our doctors.

“It’s my belief that better pay to our doctors will stop the syndrome and improve our service to residents of Kogi,” he said.

Similarly, the Chief Medical Director of Kogi State Hospital Management Board, Dr Ayo Olayemi, appealed for approval for the recruitment of health personnel in the newly built hospitals across the state.

Olayemi made the appeal while speaking to newsmen shortly after the 2024 budget appraisal of the Board on the floor of Kogi House of Assembly.

The CMD, who praised Gov Yahaya Bello for the building of the gigantic Reference Hospital in Okene and another fantastic one in Gegu-Beki, disclosed that the hospitals were grossly understaffed .

He disclosed that memos had been written by the board to the state government on the need for the staffing of the hospital and the board needed the help of the House to impress it on the executive to give approval for the recruitment of staff.

“Our major proposal for year 2024 is our resolve to maintain all the medical facilities made available by Gov Bello, hence the need to renovate some of the hospitals yet untouched,” he said. (NAN)

Chioma Ikokwu who is also known as Chioma Goodhair expressed surprise at why their brief reunion was not included in the finale of season 2.

She stated that it was cut out to suit the ongoing narrative of a bully.

Chioma wrote: “Omg I think I was still “rubbing” my powder and lipgloss in the room when these pics were taken. I wonder why this didn’t make the cut … could it be because it wasn’t negative and we were all actually getting along? And it wouldn’t suit the bully/division narrative that they’ve tried so hard to push.”

On Instagram, Iyabo Ojo taunted the show for being ‘biased’ and silent regarding the controversial issue on social media.

The actress stated that they were all aware of whatever was going on in the show.

Tania Omotayo on her part is displeased with the fact that the said reunion was cut off because it is not negative.

Tania Omotayo wrote: “I’m still shocked that they deleted this whole scene. After that breakfast table situation, we all had a blast and got along but they will never show that because it’s not negative. This is how the show should have ended. A complete joke.”

Three kidnapped while performing sacrifice in Enugu River

Three young men have been kidnapped by gunmen suspected to be herders in Ajalli River in the Ezeagu local government area of Enugu state.

The men, who hail from the Akama Oghe community in the area, were said to have gone to the river to perform some sacrifice when the gunmen swooped on them.

It was gathered however that the incident which happened on Saturday, saw one of the victims escaping from captivity in the wee hours of Sunday morning, while the rest were rescued late Sunday night.

A community leader who confirmed the development to our correspondent in Enugu said it was because of the escape that the rest were rescued.

He said: “We got the information Sunday morning after the man escaped from the den of kidnappers. Thankfully, he ran into some operatives of the Forest Guard, who ensured the rest of the victims were freed that same Sunday. And they were eventually rescued close to the RCC office along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

“They had gone to Ajalli to perform the sacrifice. It is what our people do. But, what they never envisaged was that the criminals were lurking around in the forest. So, they kidnapped them and matched them into the forest from where the other person escaped. We thank God for their safety. We thank our security men. They are doing well. Without them, police cannot operate successfully in this state.”

In a viral video shared by vigilante operatives in the area, an escaped victim, who identified himself as Chiemelie, said they were leaving the river after performing their sacrifice when they were accosted and their motorbike was taken away from them by the gunmen.

He stated: “They are Fulani people. But they were mixing their Fulani with the Hausa language. They marched us across the river and further into the forest, swinging their AK-47 rifles.

“But, I had to escape when they asked us to lie down for two hours. Two of them chased me but I continued and jumped into the muddy river. I stayed there inside the river for as long as I could until the gunmen turned back. I believe it was God that saved me.”

Meanwhile, police operatives of Enugu State Command, serving in Hawk Tactical Squad, have rescued travellers who were kidnapped along Ette Road in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area, en route to Abuja.

Reports had it that between Thursday and Friday penultimate week, some commercial buses travelling to and from Abuja were abducted and taken hostage by suspected kidnappers.

The operatives also on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at about 10 a.m., swiftly responded to credible information and rescued four kidnapped victims (three males and one female) in a forest at Agbogazi-Nike in Enugu East Local Government Area, barely one hour after their kidnap.

According to the spokesman of the Enugu State police command, Daniel Ndukwe, the hoodlums, upon sighting the Operatives, opened fire on them, but the gallant and tactful Operatives returned fire, neutralizing one of the hoodlums, forcing others to escape with fatal gunshot wounds.

He noted that an AK-47 rifle loaded with nineteen (19) rounds of live ammunition was recovered from them, while further manhunt operations to fish out the fleeing suspects were ongoing.

He said, the commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, while reiterating the avowed commitment of the police to deal ruthlessly with unrepentant violent criminals and their activities in Enugu State, commended the gallant efforts of the operatives, charging them to ensure that the fleeing miscreants are fished out, dead or alive.

The CP, therefore, entreated citizens of the state to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and supportive, and report individuals sighted with gunshot wounds to the nearest Police Station.

  • UPDATED: Akpabio swears in former minister Lalong

UPDATED: Akpabio swears in former minister Lalong

Senate president Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday, December 20, swore in a former governor of Plateau state and minister of labour and employment, Simon Lalong, as the senator representing Plateau South.

The Court of Appeal had declared Lalong as a validly elected lawmaker to represent Plateau South senatorial district.

Lalong had on Tuesday, December 19, formally resigned from the Federal Executive Council as minister.

The Clerk to the Senate, Chinedu Akubueze administered the oath of office and oath of allegiance on Lalong on the directives of the Senate president.

He took the oath of office at about 11.57 am on the floor of the Senate.

Akpabio immediately congratulated and shook hands with Lalong, a former Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council during the 2023 presidential poll that produced President Bola Tinubu.

Lalong, who is also a former speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, had tendered his resignation to President Tinubu earlier on Tuesday.

Speaking after his inauguration, Lalong said he actually longed to be a senator after his tenure as governor in May 2023.

He said: “This was my first choice, to be candid.”

According to him, he opted to hold the position of a minister in the interim and on the invitation of Tinubu because he had a case he was pursuing at the courts.

Lalong promised to do his best to serve his electorate to his human abilities.

The national chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje was at the Senate Chamber to witness Lalong’s swearing-in.

Ganduje described the event as a moment of happiness.

He said: “This is a moment of happiness. We are so happy that he won at the Court of Appeal.

“What Nigerians will expect is good legislation. As we know the APC has the majority and will work for the prosperity of all Nigerians.”

The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, had on November, 7, upheld the judgment of the lower tribunal, which declared Lalong the winner of the Plateau-South Senatorial District election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) initially declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Napoleon Bali, as the winner.

Bali had scored 148,844 votes, while Lalong recorded 91,674, according to INEC.

But, Lalong challenged the result on the grounds that the PDP had no proper structure in the state on which a candidate could contest for an election.
