    The speaker on the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has said the 2024 budget would be passed on Saturday, December 30, 2023.

    He said this as the House resumed plenary on Tuesday, December 19.

    This was as he passed a message from the Committee on Appropriations to various committees of the House that they must conclude and submit their reports of the budget defence by agencies of government by 8pm today 19th December, 2023.

    The speaker said other budget related activities like compilation, processing and harmonization would take place in between.

    BREAKING: Supreme Court reserves judgments in PDP, Rhodes-Vivour cases against Sanwo-Olu

    The Supreme Court on Tuesday, December 19, reserved judgments in two appeals filed by Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, candidate of the Labour Party (LP) and his counterpart in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Azeez Adediran against the election of Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

    The appeals by Rhodes-Vivour and Adeniran are against the earlier judgments of the Court of Appeal in Lagos, which affirmed the two decisions of the election tribunal which dismissed their petiton, challenging Sanwo-Olu’s victory in the last governorship election.

    A five-member panel of the Supreme Court, presided over by Justice John Okoro told parties that they would be informed when the judgments are ready.

    The deputy governor, Femi Hamzat, Secretary to the State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin and some other senior officials of the Lagos State Government witnessed the court session.

    Popular singer, Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, popularly known, Mayorkun has vowed never to step foot in Calabar after a bad experience in the state. 

    The former DMW signee, via his Instagram story and Twitter page, called out the state, promising not to perform there again.

    Though he didn’t disclose further, Mayorkun sent a message to other artists who would be performing at their festivals, wishing them good luck.

    Ghanaian dancehall singer, Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., popularly known as Shatta Wale, has lamented the declining state of his country’s music industry as compared to the progressing Nigeria music industry. 

    He bemoaned the dwindling Ghana’s music while attesting that they do not come close to Nigeria musically.

    The self-styled ‘King of African dancehall’ said Ghanaian musicians can no longer compete with their Nigerian counterparts, while acknowledging the huge gap between the two music industries in terms of growth in recent years.

    Sensational singer Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, popularly known as Spyro, has clarified the misconception of netizens who dragged him over the weekend for singing his hit song ‘only fine girl’ in church. 

    Recall that the singer was spotted performing his song at the Harvesters International Gospel Centre’s Christmas carol service in Lagos.

    The man of God in charge, Pastor Bolaji wasn’t left out in the dragging after permitting Spyro to perform his hit song “Only Fine Girl” during a drama presentation at the carol service.

    Responding to the criticism in a post on his official X, he clarified that he has the right to serve and worship God just like any other members despite being a celebrity.

    Spyro wrote: “Just saw myself and Pastor Bolaji has been getting dragged because I did a drama ministration in church. Let me make something very clear.

    “The Carol was completely FREE for everyone. The tickets were free. Because I’m a celebrity doesn’t make me human? I can serve God like the rest of you. So please understand that I’m human, a Christian and I serve in a real church. Thanks.”

    Singer, Tobechukwu Victor Okoh, popularly known as Peruzzi, has revealed that he loves the music style of Innocent Ujah Idibia, aka 2Baba.

    Acknowledging 2Baba as his daddy, Peruzzi said he has learnt a lot from the famous singer.

    Emphasising on the ‘African Queen’ crooner’s influence on his talent, Peruzzi admitted to copying his lyrics and musical style “a lot.”

    Peruzzi spoke in a recent episode of the Zero Conditions podcast on Pop Central.

    He said: “2Baba is my daddy (mentor). I copy from him a lot. If you listened to ‘Amaka’, you’d notice I copied his verse. I just changed some things on it.

    Popular singer, Tobechukwu Victor Okoh, popularly known as Peruzzi, has narrated how he saw a fetish item ‘juju’ in his jacket while he was staying at his record label boss, Davido’s house in Lagos.

    According to him, he reached out for his jacket which had just returned from the laundry then a fetish material fell from the clothes.

    Peruzzi said the item was meant to harm him but lost its potency because his “head is strong.”

    Speaking in the latest episode of the Zero Conditions podcast, Peruzzi recounted: “While I was staying at Davido’s house, one evening I took a shower and then went to the wardrobe to dress, I wore my shirt and pants. And then one jacket was just telling me, ‘Wear me, wear me.’

    “I don’t know how to explain this but I carried the jacket and while I was trying to wear it, something fell and I looked and I saw jazz tied and everything. Juju, better juju in my room in a jacket that just came from the laundry. Na say my head strong na e make I see am.”

    He said he moved out of Davido’s house when his partner, Chioma got pregnant with their late son, Ifeanyi.

    Governors Yusuf, Otti get high rating in governance – survey

    Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano state and Alex Otti of Abia state have emerged as standout leaders, garnering robust endorsements and substantial support from their respective constituencies, according to a recent survey conducted by Run to Win’s Democratic Accountability Project. 

    The poll’s results shed light on the public perception of the leadership approaches of both Governor Otti and Governor Yusuf in their first six months and the positive reception of the public regarding the current direction of governance in both states.

    Run To Win’s extensive nationwide survey, launched in partnership with Momentum Africa, provides a comprehensive insight into the first six months of governance for select state leaders in Nigeria. The polls assessed public perception and satisfaction levels, yielding intriguing insights for Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Benue, and Kano States.

    In Kano state, the NNPP governor garnered an extraordinary 82% approval rating. According to respondents, the governor’s emphasis on primary healthcare (80%), advancements in education (78%), and combating corruption (76%) have resonated with the electorate. Notably, an overwhelming 88% expressed affinity for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Governor Kabir’s party, and a strong inclination to retain the party’s leadership.

    Otti’s performance in Abia state was a few percentage points shy of approval from half the survey takers, at a 46% satisfaction rating. His focused initiatives on enhancing drainage systems (67%), the perception that he has displayed strong leadership (66%), and his prioritising road infrastructure (65%) earned him his current standing. Notably, the growing appeal of the Labour Party is evident, with an impressive 74% of respondents expressing a willingness to vote for the party in future elections.

    RtW was founded with the primary objective of assisting young and credible political candidates with the tools and support to build effective political campaigns and win vital political seats.

    As an expansion of its process, the new Democratic Accountability Project will deploy resources towards the mass dissemination of information around governance responsibility. The first edition of the project measures performances across five states, including Akwa Ibom, Kano, Benue, Abia, and Adamawa.

    Remi Ogunkayo, a co-founder of RtW, shared insights into the organisation’s exciting new direction. 

    “The exceptional voter turnout witnessed during the 2023 elections underscores the need to sustain and encourage such active civic participation. Achieving this goal demands impartial assessments of our states’ governance.

    “The Democratic Accountability Project serves as a reliable conduit for the electorate to communicate effectively with elected officials, addressing the imperative for independent evaluations and constructive dialogue.”

    Six months post the recent general elections, voters have emphasised pressing concerns that demand swift attention.

    Chief among these concerns are the soaring cost of living, escalating fuel prices, and widespread perceptions of inadequate governance. A striking 68% of respondents have voiced the urgency of addressing the escalating inflation that significantly impacts their overall quality of life.
