Makinde to Ogbomoso royal houses: sheath your sword, work with Soun

Oyo state governor, Seyi Makinde, has appealed to all those who contested the stool of Soun of Ogbomoso with Oba Ghandi Afolabi to sheath their sword and withdraw their court cases in the interest of the peace of the ancient town.

Makinde, while urging the royal families to do so before the end of the week, reminded the people of another town that after 20 years of legal tussle got her king removed, saying both the deposed king, those who won in court and everyone in the town are not benefiting anyway from the matter.

He, however, warned that if those in court refused to stop, he as the governor of the state is also in the battle and will fight the course with everything within the powers of government.

Makinde appealed on Tuesday, December 19, at the Soun Township Stadium, Ogbomoso, the venue of the official coronation and presentation of staff of office to the 21st Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye.

Dignitaries from all walks of life in a large turnout witnessed the historic event.

Leading the dignitaries is a former Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, who was represented by Sir Olusegun Adekunle, Chairman, Nigeria Governors Forum, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq (Kwara) who was represented by his deputy, Kayode Alabi, Governor Ademola Adeleke (Osun).

Speaking, Governor Makinde while congratulating the new monarch urged him to work for the unity of the town, the state and the state traditional council as a whole.

Makinde said: “I rejoice with the sons and daughters of Ogbomosoland. I have discussed with Kabiyesi privately the steps that must be taken to ensure the unity of Ogbomosoland. It is not just for the unity and progress of Ogbomosoland.

“You have to work for the unity of the traditional Council in Oyo state. There is no central unity in the traditional Council and I want you to work to have a role to play.

“It is a complete reconstruction for our House of Chiefs and House of Assembly, it is in our budget for next year.”

“The other thing I want to say is with those who contested the throne with Kabiyesi. As of last week, some people are still in court with injunctions.

“The contestation for the throne is behind us and I am looking forward to those in court withdrawing their court cases by the end of this week as a show of love for Ogbomosoland.

“Recall, a city in this same Oyo state took their king to court and after 20 years of legal tussle, the king was removed. Today, both the deposed king, the new one and the people of the entire community, none of them have any known peace.

“So, the people fighting must stop. If they don’t, me as the Executive Governor of Oyo state, we are in the fight together and I will ensure we fight them with everything within the powers of the government.

“I am a believer in the Constitutional roles of our traditional rulers and I will appeal to our new Kabiyesi to work for the progress of the state.”

In his goodwill remarks, Prof Osinbajo who lauded the new monarch described him as a man who loves people and speaks the truth always.

He said the two qualities are essentially needed by any leader expressing optimism that the people of Ogbomosoland will soon begin to feel the positive impact of the new monarch. He prayed for the successful reign of the new monarch.

Osinbajo said: “I congratulate Governor Seyi Makinde for approving the choice of the people in Ghandi Olaoye.

“The person who is the new Soun is my close and intimate friend. What I know about him that makes me happy that he is our new king is that he is a man who loves people and humanity and I am sure he will show love.

“He is a truthful person. He doesn’t lie. All I see about him is that a king must love his people and be truthful.  God will help you and support you.”

In their separate goodwill messages, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, Kwara Governor Abdulrahman and Osun’s Governor Adeleke commended Governor Makinde, the new monarch and the people of Ogbomosoland on their choice. They prayed for the success of the new monarch.

In his acceptance speech after receiving his staff and instrument of office from Governor Makinde, Oba Ghandi called on all the stakeholders “in the destiny of this great land for us to work together to ensure that Ogbomosho Land fulfils the great potential that the Almighty God has imbued us with.

“No community can embark on significant development without the government’s input. We are thankful for the role that the government at all three levels federal, state and local government has played in developing Ogbomosho Land in the past and continue to play.”

He called for the support of the indigenes of the town saying “Let my coronation be a celebration and a collective reaffirmation of our shared destiny. I intend to be a King to serve you all irrespective of religion, gender or other things that may differentiate us. The strength of our Kingdom lies not only in the crown I wear but in the bonds that bind us together: the bonds of loyalty, respect and mutual understanding.”

He said his service is premised on a clear vision of a prosperous and peaceful Ogbomosholand which rests on a detailed 25-year plan, to be unveiled in the coming months.

He added: “My service is premised on a clear vision. I am very aware of the words that the wisest of Kings recorded for us in the book of Proverbs that without a vision, the people perish.

“My vision for a prosperous and peaceful Ogbomosho Land rests on a detailed 25-year plan, to be unveiled in the coming months.

“As I have said on several occasions, I have stopped being a church pastor and now become a shepherd of a people. The people whom I will serve as a shepherd are not just Christians but also Moslems who follow the various African religions. As your sovereign, I promise to uphold the values that define us a commitment to justice, equity and compassion. Let these be our watchwords in Ogbomosho Land.”

  • Nigeria losing $7 billion annually to poor management of Ports – Rep members

Nigeria losing $7 billion annually to poor management of Ports – Rep members

Two members of the House of Representatives said on Tuesday, December 19, that the country was losing a whopping 7 billion dollars annually to inefficiencies and poor management of the nation’s ports.

The two members, Hon. Julius Ihonvbare and Hon Ibrahim A. Isiaka also said that Nigeria’s seaports receive barely 10% of West African imports out of 60 per cent destined for Nigeria, while others are lost to neigbouring countries.

In their joint motion at the resumption of plenary, the two lawmakers said there was the need for the House to carry out a comprehensive investigation to unravel the gaps and opportunities lost by the country annually.

The House therefore resolved to mandate its Committees on Port and Harbours, National Planning and Economic Development, Maritime Safety Education and Administration and Nigerian Shippers’ Council to investigate the gaps affecting the full realisation of the economic advantage of Ports and Harbours and other Blue Economy in Nigeria.

Presenting the motion, Hon. Ihonvbare said the maritime sector is crucial for the Nigerian economy’s survival, but lament the under-utilized seaports which can increase the nation’s revenue and indeed the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He said: “Nigeria’s seaports receive barely 10% of West African imports out of 60 per cent destined for Nigeria, a significant economic loss due to poor management and inefficiencies, estimated to cost $7 billion annually.

“Most ships bringing goods to Nigeria prefer to go to other ports order than Nigerian ports. Indeed the Benin Republic benefits from Nigeria’s large market, while Cotonou remains a popular importer’s haven, huge trade cargoes are lost to Togo and other neighbouring countries from where they are offloaded and transshipped to Nigeria due to Poor shipping connectivity and shallow drafts of the port channels which lead to trade cargo losses, estimated to be N250 billion in 2016 alone.”

He question why the nation is unable to provide adequate infrastructure and reduce pressure on Lagos ports and why the Calabar, Port Harcourt, Warri, and Koko ports cannot be developed as a haven for importers in the region.

According to him, the lack of adequate infrastructure and capacity in the growing cargo and maritime business is a significant issue.

    He said Nigeria’s Apapa Port lost West Africa’s leading position due to congestion and poor quality services to shippers. Port of Lomé, with a capacity of 1.1 million twenty-foot containers, overtook Lagos Port due to modernization reforms which tripled its capacity from 311,500 containers to 3.1 million, thus, making ‘Togo’s Port of Lomé becoming a regional transit hub;

He said: “Nigeria’s Apapa Port, Lagos, which handles about 1 million TEU annually, lost 30 per cent of its container traffic over five years due to several factors bedevilling its inability to deliver efficient services to cargo owners, this explains why Nigerian ports have remained inefficient over the years.

“Nigeria’s major seaports in Lagos do not have deep draughts to handle bigger vessels, while modern seaports in Port of Lomé have a depth of 16.60 meters and capacity to accommodate third generation ships, Apapa port operates with a 13,5 meters draught that can only allow vessels with about 4,000 TEUs of containers to call the port.”

  • Why 1999 Constitution must be reviewed, by Robert Clarke

Why 1999 Constitution must be reviewed, by Robert Clarke

Robert Clarke, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) has demanded a revision of the 1999 Constitution, claiming it is the root of all of the country’s issues.

Clarke said this in an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday, December 19.

He said: “The 1999 constitution is the cornerstone of our problems. In every area of political line, especially in the area of election, when the constitution restricts those who can come and be voted for.

“…or who can vote for, something must be wrong with that constitution. The problem today is not what the president says.

Regarding the Rivers issue, the senior lawyer stated that President Bola Tinubu is not entitled to a constitutional say in the matter.

He said: “The constitutional role of the President in all these fracas, there should have been none. The only time the constitution allowed the federal government to put its mouth was during the First Republic.

“All that we are running after today is power and money. Those two elements, where do you get them in Nigeria? They are only from politics.

“If you count down governors who have served in Nigeria since 2000, ask them to come show us their bank account, you will be shocked.

“We have to ask ourselves, is politics in Nigeria only meant for politicians? Why can’t people like us contest an election without joining a political party? Why do we need a political party? This is the problem we have in Nigeria today.”

Clarke said the three areas in the constitution that need amendment are: Local government; election; who can belong to a party and why should a party be the dominant factor in elections in Nigeria.

He said: “Once you do the three areas in Nigeria today, I can assure you, you won’t hear about any court cases. This country will move forward.”
