Mansa Musa: Storied Olympian turned security expert in US

He bestrode Nigeria’s and indeed’s table tennis like a colossus winning everything on offer  in his hey  days but Olympian , Commonwealth  and table tennis champion, Atanda ‘Mansa’ Musa is reportedly now a security officer in New , USA.

The ping pong star who has represented Nigeria at two Summer Olympics in 1988 and 1992, taking part in both the singles and doubles events,  is now working with a New York financial outfit called JPMorgan Chase.

This much was  disclosed on  the Nigeria  Sports Village Square being administered  by foremost journalist Osasu  Obayiuwana  where  the current  status  of Atanda, fondly called Mansa Musa in his glorious days  in table tennis,  was divulged by a contributor.

“I visited my buddy who works for JP Morgan Chase in New York  and In a surprising twist during my visit I learned that the renowned Nigerian table tennis champion, Atanda Musa, was employed in their security division,” he disclosed.

“Struck by the convergence of finance and sports, I seized the opportunity to engage in a profound conversation with Atanda.

“We delved into his remarkable journey, and I discussed with my friend the importance of ensuring that Atanda’s legacy transcends the confines of a corporate role.

“It was a chance meeting that not only bridged two seemingly disparate worlds but also sparked a commitment to preserving the impactful legacy of a legendary athlete,” he noted with breathy purr.

Indeed, African table tennis icons don’t come bigger  than  Mansa Musa who was once ranked 20th  in the world at his peak.

Yet it’s instructive to know that there’s a marriage   between  sports  and education  which has  now given the iconic Mansa Musa  a new life long after his retirement from the active sport.

Musa whose rivalry with the late Yomi Bankole became the climax of the local tournaments, has successfully managed his career from Saudi Arabia  and Qatar before berthing in the  USA  where he now works in the security department  of JPMorgan Chase.

It would be recalled  that  in the 1980s, Mansa Musa  was a house-hold name in the Nigerian sports  as a professional table tennis star.

Through his remarkable and creative style of play, he won many hearts and followers of the game from grassroots to the top level of the sport.

He won the table tennis singles event at the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships (in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia), for Nigeria  before partnering with Sunday Eboh to take the doubles gold in the same discipline in 1982.

Along with Francis Sule, Atanda, again, won the table tennis doubles gold medal at the 1985 Commonwealth Games. He achieved a clean sweep of gold in each of the singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles events representing Nigeria at the 1987 All-Africa Games and then, in 1991, with Bose Kafo as partner, he won the Commonwealth Games’ Mixed Doubles event for table tennis.

Arguably one of the best table tennis players to contest out of Africa, Musa’s backhand play, and the loop associated with it remains his pièce de résistance. He played in various countries and locations and during his best years in Alicante, Spain.

Besides playing, the 10-time African Men’s Table Tennis Singles Champion, has always liked coaching. In 1992 he became a full-time coach in Saudi Arabia for three years. In 1995 he was hired to coach in Qatar at the Ali club. In 1997 he returned to Nigeria, where he continued to play and coach before moving permanently to the US.

He  has  reportedly coached various notable individuals including celebrities such as Susan Sarandon, Drew Barrymore and Nancy Pelosi, in addition to his successful coaching career.

Musa’s coaching style emphasizes hard work, discipline, and dedication, with a focus on developing players’ skills and helping them reach their full potential. He currently resides in New York City where he coaches in his spare time at SPIN.

The former African and Commonwealth table tennis champion, Atanda Musa, has admitted that taking part in the yearly Asoju Oba Cup added colours to his life.

“My life will not complete without mentioning the vital role the Asoju Oba Cup played in my life and career,”  Mansa Musa  reportedly said in a recent interview.” My 90 per cent success in life was based on the support I got from the late Chief Okoya-Thomas when I was a level two coach with the Lagos State Sports Council while he was the chairman of the Council.

He added: “Competing in the tournament from early 1980s really brought me into limelight in Nigeria and earned me a place in the national team. As the tournament usually takes place in December, it affords us the opportunity to win several gift items while my first car in life was through the tournament, which I won after defeating Yomi Bankole in one of the finals.”
Even as the family of the late business mogul in collaboration with Lagos State Sports Commission are planning elaborate 50th anniversary of the competition this month, Musa said that he would forever remain grateful to Chief Okoya-Thomas having contributed immensely to his success on and off the table.

“I cannot quantify the contribution of Chief Okoya-Thomas to my life because it was through the competition that I gained more experience playing against the seniors while I became the first table tennis player to win a brand new Peugeot Saloon car by competing in the competition.

“I must also commend the family for keeping and upholding the legacy of Chief Okoya-Thomas by staging the tournament despite the demise of the initiator,” he noted.

Welch to become EPL’s first female referee

Rebecca Welch will become the first female referee to officiate a Premier League match when she takes charge of Fulham’s home game against Burnley on Dec. 23.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) confirmed the appointment on Thursday and also said Sam Allison would become the first Black official to take charge of a Premier match for 15 years.

Allison will be the referee for Sheffield United v Luton Town on Dec. 26.

Howard Webb, the PGMOL’s head of referees, said both Welch and Allison deserved their chance.

“They are both part of the PGMOL development group which fast-tracks talented officials through the pathway,” Webb told Sky Sports. “We have already seen three officials from the group take charge of their first Premier League games and now we have number four and five and it shows the value of that work.

“We have not seen a female take charge of a Premier League game before so it’s significant, and Sam being the first Black official with a whistle in the Premier League since Uriah Rennie. It demonstrates people can make it through the pathway from groups that are not traditionally well represented.”

Welch has been a trailblazer for female referees and last month was the fourth official for Fulham v Manchester United in the Premier League, the first female to fulfil that role.

The 40-year-old, a regular in the Women’s Super League, has previously officiated in the Football League and the FA Cup and was on duty at the women’s World Cup this year.

The PGMOL has made greater diversity one of its aims and Allison will become the first Black referee in the Premier League since Rennie retired in 2009.

Allison, a former fire-fighter, was promoted to the Football League in 2020 and moved up to the second-tier Championship earlier this year. No Black or Asian referee has taken charge of a Premier League game since Rennie’s last match in 2008.

  • Chelsea unperturbed by Osimhen’s new Napoli contract

Chelsea unperturbed by Osimhen’s new Napoli contract

Chelsea target Victor Osimhen has agreed terms on a new contract at Napoli which includes a release clause worth around £112million.

Osimhen is a key transfer target for Chelsea as they plot a move for a top-level striker.

The Nigeria forward has reached an agreement with Napoli on a contract until 2026 and the deal is set to end any prospect of him moving in January.

But Osimhen could still be on the move at the end of the season and a switch to Chelsea remains a possibility next summer.

A fixed price tag has now effectively been set and the Blues have been encouraged that Osimhen is open to a transfer to Stamford Bridge.

Osimhen has described Chelsea legend Didier Drogba as one of his football idols and likes the idea of playing in the Premier League.

Napoli are understood to have started lining up replacements for the 24-year-old African Footballer of the Year, with the expectation that a major club will meet his release clause.

Chelsea are still considering whether to move for a striker in January as they finalise their plans for the winter transfer window.

Mauricio Pochettino has suggested Chelsea need to spend again to boost their firepower and he wants a target man-style forward to add height, physicality and goals to his team.

Osimhen, who fired Napoli to the Serie A title last season but has had an injury-disrupted start to this season, fits that profile. He would want well in excess of £100,000-a-week and Chelsea face a big decision over whether to rip up their wage structure to land a top-class striker.

FULL LIST: Commissioners who resigned from Gov Fubara’s cabinet

No fewer than eight commissioners in total have tendered their resignation as the crisis in Rivers state deepens further.

Those who have resigned are reported to have strong ties with Nyesom Wike who is the current minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to political watchers, the resignations are apparently linked to the power tussle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

Out of the six commissioners, five served under Wike’s administration in the same capacity, while Woke was Wike’s Chief of Staff for eight years.

Chief Dr Jacobson Nbina resigned his appointment as the Commissioner for Transport in Rivers State.

UPDATED: Supreme Court okays Nnamdi Kanu’s trail for treason

The Supreme Court on Friday upheld the treasonable charge filed against Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The New Agency of Nigeria( NAN) reports the federal government prayed the court to set aside an earlier judgment by the Court of Appeal, which quashed the treasonable felony charge against Kanu and ordered his release because he was unlawfully brought back to the country after he jumped bail.

Kanu wants the Supreme Court to allow the judgment of the Court of Appeal and uphold his discharge and acquittal.

Counsel to the federal government, Tijani Gazali (SAN) has urged the apex court “to allow the appeal, set aside the judgment of the court below, and affirm the judgment of the trial court (Federal High Court), to the effect that the respondent should stand trial in respect of the charge, which the court below quashed.”

Gazali further urged the court to dismiss the cross-appeal filed by Kanu.

In his submission, Mr Mike Ozekhome, Kani’s counsel, urged the court to dismiss the appeal filed by the federal government with punitive costs and uphold the cross-appeal in order to do substantial justice to this matter.”

He urged the court to allow the cross-appeal filed by his client.

Ozekhome told the court that his client has been in custody since June 29,  2021

The apex court also declined to order the release  Kanu, from detention.

The judgment that was written by Justice Garba Lawal voided and set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal which in October last year ordered the release of Kanu and also quashed the terrorism charges against him.

It held that although the Nigerian Government was reckless and unlawfully rendered Kanu from Kenya, such unlawful act has not divested any court from proceeding with trial.

He that no Nigerian law was cited in the suit seeking Kanu’s release on mere unlawful abduction from Kenya adding that at moment, the remedy for such action is for Kanu to file a civil matter against such act instead of removing the powers of courts to continue with his trial for alleged criminal charges.

He subsequently ordered that Kanu should go and defend himself in the remaining 7 count terrorism charges against him.
