Nigeria to reduce cost, boost aviation safety through drones

The Federal Government has expressed readiness to adopt Navigational Aid drones in the aviation sector to reduce cost, boost safety and streamline operations.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, said the drone initiative can shape the future of aerospace development and complement aircraft calibration.

The Minister disclosed this yesterday at a one-day executive workshop on the NavAid drone with the theme, “Advancement in Air Navigation and Safety organised by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) in collaboration with LiviaSoft and Colibrex.

The Minister, who was represented by the Director of Safety of the Ministry, Chukwu Michael, said: “Air navigation and safety are the cornerstone of the aviation industry.

As air traffic continues to grow, the need for innovative, efficient, and reliable solutions has never been more critical. We stand at the forefront of a new era in aerospace, where cutting-edge technologies like the NavAid drones are revolutionizing how we approach air navigation, safety, and operational efficiency.

“The integration of advanced drone technology is transforming the industry. The NavAid drones represent the new frontier in aerospace tools that not only enhance safety but also streamline operations, reduce costs, and pave the way for a more sustainable future.”

He added that the adoption of advanced navigation and air safety technologies aligns with the key areas under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The Managing Director of NAMA, Engr. Farouk Umar said air navigation and safety are the cornerstones of a robust and reliable aviation sector.

The DG, who was represented by the Director of Air Traffic of NAMA, Mr John Tayo, said the need for efficient, safe, and sustainable air navigation systems is critical as Nigeria continues to experience rapid growth in air traffic, urbanization, and economic development.

He said: “The safety of passengers, crew, and aircraft, as well as the seamless operation of our airspace, are paramount to maintaining Nigeria’s position as a leader in Africa’s aviation industry.

“In this era of technological advancement, traditional methods of air navigation and safety management are being complemented and in some cases, replaced by innovative solutions that offer greater precision, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. One such innovation is t

“The NavAid Drone, a cutting-edge technology that is revolutionizing the aerospace ecosystem. By leveraging this technology, Nigeria can address key challenges in its aviation sector, including improved safety, enhanced efficiency, sustainability and capacity building.

“The integration of NavAid Drone technology into Nigeria’s aerospace ecosystem is not just a step forward; it is a leap into the future. It aligns with the Nigerian government’s vision of fostering innovation, improving infrastructure, and positioning the country as a hub for aerospace excellence in Africa.”

He added that collaboration between government, industry stakeholders, and technology providers will be essential to ensure the successful implementation of NavAid Drone technology.

The President of LiviaSoft, Dr. Bobga Danjuma, said the adoption of navigational aid drones saves the country millions of naira and also prevents loss of lives.

Danjuma said: “This innovation is good for Nigeria and Africa because it allows us to do calibration more and avoid risking lives by flying the aircraft. When you are doing the calibration, you may have six or seven operators and a pilot on that aircraft and imagine if it crashes, the seven souls would be gone but with the drone, you are not putting anyone at risk.

“Also, it costs just between N20 to N40 million if you’re using a big calibration aircraft but with the drone, you could spend, on an operating side of things, you could spend maybe less than N10 million as a service for that drone in a whole year versus that aircraft.”

  • Airlines seek participation in$67.5b global travel partnerships

Airlines seek participation in$67.5b global travel partnerships

Nigerian carriers are wrapping up strategies to seek more participation in the global air travel partnership value chain, which the International Air Transport Association (IATA) projects to generate $67.5 billion in operating profit in 2025.

The umbrella trade association of global airlines projects a net operating margin of 6.7 for players in the air transport  industry with capacity to  employ 86.5 million people  generating  $4.1 trillion in economic impact.

Investigations showed that some indigenous carriers, including Air Peace, Xejet Airlines, Aero Contractors, United Nigeria Airlines, Arik Air, ValueJets Airlines , Ibom Air and others are exploring partnership options packaged as either joint ventures, interline agreements or code share with foreign carriers.

The new thinking by Nigerian carriers, experts familiar with the development hinted, is predicated on the drive to boost their operational capacity, push for enhanced  route connectivity to improve service offering.

While Air Peace and Emirates have signed an interline agreement, allowing Emirates passengers flying into Lagos to connect :  Asaba, Akure, Benin City, Calabar, Enugu, Ilorin, Kaduna, Owerri, Abuja, Kano, Uyo, Port Harcourt, and Warri with seamless single-ticket travel and simplified baggage handling.

The airline is exploring partnership with a Southern Africa carrier – Air Namibia.

Experts say interline agreement facilitates frictionless single-ticket travel and simplified baggage throughput, enhancing the travel experience for passengers.

Investigations further revealed that African carrier- Kenya Airways has initiated flight cooperation discussions with one of the airlines : either Aero Contractors / Arik Air managed on behalf of the Federal Government by the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), under receivership.

A source familiar with the development said fledgling carrier Xejet Airlines, is deepening negotiations for a working relationship with Air Sierra Leone .

Checks by The Nation also revealed that United Nigeria Airlines is in discussion with a Central African Airline for both interline and codeshare agreement.

Industry sources hinted that Ibom Air will soon unfold its cooperation plans as it seeks to expand its  flight footprints into West and Central African countries.

To achieve this, the airline is seeking to developing the Victor Attah International Airport In Uyo into a regional hub.

Speaking in an interview, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo said the government is creating multiple windows for indigenous carriers to deepen their operations on international scale.

Speaking during a recent visit to Keyamo in Abuja, the Namibian Ambassador to Nigeria ,  Humphrey Geiseb urged   Keyamo to engage with domestic airlines to explore potential collaboration opportunities.

The Ambassador expressed his country’s desire to partner with Nigerian airlines to restore direct connectivity, citing ongoing discussions with Air Peace.

In his response , Keyamo  expressed his support and shared a personal experience regarding the challenges of establishing direct flights in the region.

He referenced the successful Algeria/Lagos/Cameroon flight route, which was initiated after the Algerian Ambassador proposed a direct connection, despite the close proximity between Nigeria and Cameroon.

Keyamo said  one of Nigeria’s fast-rising domestic carriers, Xejet, which currently operates Sierra Leone national carrier, Air Sierra Leone, could be a potential partner in this venture.

Experts in the aviation sector have variously canvassed more partnership between indigenous airlines and foreign carriers to create more revenue opportunities through passenger distribution.

Kenya Airways disclosed last week  that it is open to entering into strategic partnerships and Special Prorate Agreement with Nigerian airlines.

Its Regional Manager for America and West Africa, Ngamau Stephen, said the carrier is looking forward to collaborations with Nigerian airlines which he said will enhance domestic and regional connectivity and provide seamless travel options for passengers within and outside Nigeria.

Highlighting the need for global carriers to explore partnership opportunities, IATA’s Director General / Chief Executive Officer, Mr Willie Walsh said 2025 offers prospects in the horizon.

He said: “ We’re expecting airlines to deliver a global profit of $36.6 billion in 2025. This will be hard-earned as airlines take advantage of lower oil prices while keeping load factors above 83 per cent , tightly controlling costs, investing in decarbonization, and managing the return to more normal growth levels following the extraordinary pandemic recovery.

“All these efforts will help to mitigate several drags on profitability which are outside of airlines’ control, namely persistent supply chain challenges, infrastructure deficiencies, onerous regulation, and a rising tax burden.”

He went on : “ In 2025, industry revenues will exceed $1 trillion for the first time. It’s also important to put that into perspective. A trillion dollars is a lot—almost  one per cent  of the global economy. That makes airlines a strategically important industry.

“But remember that airlines carry $940 billion in costs, not to mention interest and taxes. They retain a net profit margin of just 3.6 per cent . Put another way, the buffer between profit and loss, even in the good year that we are expecting of 2025, is just $7 per passenger.

“With margins that thin, airlines must continue to watch every cost and insist on similar efficiency across the supply chain—especially from our monopoly infrastructure suppliers who all too often let us down on performance and efficiency.”

IATA boss  highlighted the broad benefits of growing connectivity, affirming that the   most recent estimates show that airline employment is expected to grow to 3.3 million in 2025.

He said: “ Airlines are the core of a global aviation value chain that employs 86.5 million people and generates $4.1 trillion in economic impact, accounting for 3.9 per cent  of global GDP . Connectivity is an economic catalyst for growth in nearly all industries.

“Looking at 2025, for the first time, traveler numbers will exceed five billion and the number of flights will reach 40 million. This growth means that aviation connectivity will be creating and supporting jobs across the global economy.

“The most obvious are the hospitality and retail sectors which will gear up to meet the needs of a growing number of customers.

“But almost every business benefits from the connectivity that air transport provides, making it easier to meet customers, receive supplies, or transport products.”

  • Fed Govt’s policies will enhance airlines’ competitiveness, says Keyamo

Fed Govt’s policies will enhance airlines’ competitiveness, says Keyamo

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo  has said the federal government is ready to advance the capacity and competitiveness of the nation’s national carriers via implementation of fly Nigeria Bill 2024.

Keyamo said this yesterday at the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing Series, organised by the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation.

According to him, Fly Nigeria Bill 2024 is meant to enhance capacity and competitiveness of Nigeria`s national carriers to promote national pride and improve service delivery in the aviation sector.

“The Fly Nigeria Bill, a proposed legislation, aims to prioritise Nigerian flag carriers for all government-funded travel, whether domestic, regional, or international, ensuring that Nigerian airlines are used first.

“The Bill’s primary goal is to boost the Nigerian aviation industry by ensuring that government-funded travel, including trips by officials, contractors, and grantees, utilises Nigerian airlines whenever possible.

“The Fly Nigeria Bill mandates that all government-funded air travel must first consider Nigerian flag carriers before any foreign carriers, even for international routes.

He explained that the initiative aimed to create a more competitive and sustainable aviation sector, allowing Nigerian airlines to compete globally toward economic growth via job creation, attract investment, and conserve foreign exchange.

According to him, the Fly Nigeria Bill is seen as a way to foster national pride and ensure that Nigerian airlines are recognised as leaders in the aviation industry.

He added that the idea for the Bill had been in development for over 15 years, but was committed to fast-tracking its implementation.

Keyamo emphasised that the Fly Nigeria Bill would be a crucial step in protecting Nigeria’s aviation market from external dominance to ensure local airlines have the opportunity to thrive.

According to him, the Federal Government has planned to strengthen regulations for a safer aviation ecosystem by tackling illegal commercial operation by private jet owners.

The minister acknowledged the receipt of the final report of the Ministerial Task Force (MTF) on Illegal Private Charter Operations and Related Matters.

According to him, addressing illegal private airline operations aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of “doing the right thing” across all sectors of the national economy.

“The issue of illegal charter operations involves private jets and aircrafts operating outside the law, especially those obtaining licenses under the PNCF for unlawful activities.

“We are confident that we will have the freedom to take necessary actions. Our goal is a safer, more secure aviation ecosystem in Nigeria,” he said.

Keyamo acknowledged that many people had worked for years to create safer environments and regulatory standards for aviation.

“We will not drop the ball. Our responsibility is to enhance regulatory standards and make aviation safer for everyone,” he said.

The minister noted that illegal practices by private airlines had existed for years before he assumed office.

“When I took office, I was told the problem was insurmountable and advised to ignore it, but I felt it had to be addressed.

“They claimed it was difficult to regulate and that the culprits were ‘untouchable,’ but my experience in civil society and as an EFCC prosecutor taught me to confront such challenges.’’

This situation, he added, led to the formation of the task force, which was established in June 2024 with experienced personnel.

Keyamo said that the ministry would collaborate with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to determine practical steps for implementing the MTF report.

  • Aviation investors mull use of aircraft in tackling insecurity, others in Edo

Aviation investors mull use of aircraft in tackling insecurity, others in Edo

Edo State born United States based Entrepreneur in the Aviation industry and the Chief Executive Officer, Auxano Aviation, Ehimenmen Odia, and his partner, Morrison Okunbor has expressed optimism that the Benin Aero club, the first of its kind in Edo State has the potentials of addressing the challenges of insecurity, medical Emergency, tourism among others.

They noted that investment in the sector offers an avenue for many interested Nigerians and beginners the opportunity of flying light planes with single engine adding that it also serves as a feeder system in strengthening and providing the needed manpower to the aviation industry in Nigeria.

They pointed out that in a few years Edo State would become the epicentre in the local assembling and production of light thereby boosting the social-economic fortune of the state.

The duo spoke at the end of a two-day awareness program for students and pupils with the aim to develop interest among them in choosing flying as a career path from an early age.

The session with the students and pupils took place at Benin domestic airport also availed them first hand opportunities in aviation as invited pupils showed excitement and enthusiasm with the arrival of an Australia built light Jabiru aircraft.

Ordia while thanking the Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo and the Ministry of Aviation for providing the enabling environment to kick start the project in Edo state said it was in fulfillment of his child-hood dream when he enrolled to be trained as a pilot in the United States.

Giving a background of his life-long dream, the Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Accountant graduate said the idea to establish Aero club was nurtured in the US when he realized that many American business owners and professionals use light aircraft for easy accessibility and efficiency in service delivery.

He said, “Before I went to the US, I have always had a love for aviation and I remembered when I was in the University of Benin staff school in Ugbowo we used to come to GRA here and as kids we used to come to the airport to see the planes and that thing stayed inside of me, the misery of these big birds flying.

“Years later when I got to the United States, I saw how easy it was to get my private pilot licence but while in Nigeria I wanted to be a pilot, trying to get into the military and all that wasn’t easy but when I got to the US it was a lot easier.

“Close to the house where I lived is a small airport with 300 planes in a hangar. In the morning, you will find doctors, lawyers, business people coming to fly their planes to work and back and that is where the idea of doing this in Nigeria comes from.

“Why can’t we have this kind of facility available, why can’t a lawyer in Benin have a case in Lagos and come back to Benin the same day? Why can’t a specialist doctor visit five states or locations with ease and be back home.

“My vision is making things efficient; we looked carefully at the aviation environment with my partner, Morrison Okunbor and what we discovered for example is that If you go around the world, most successful aviation countries have very efficient, functional general aviation sectors, all pilots start by learning how to start flying planes.

“So, with our aero club, we intend to remove the mysticism and classicism surrounding it. If you have the support system, investment and through the aero club you can encourage people to learn how to fly, not just the young people but older people.

On his part, the Vice President, Benin Aero Club, Morrison Okunbor commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for his support right from the first day the initiative was unveiled noted that the issue of capital flight and going to train abroad to be a pilot has now been removed with the aero club in Benin.

“Coming from a background where aviation was kind of a norm from my elder brother, late Capt Hosa Okunbo, this is our little contribution in igniting that zeal for anybody that wants to fly.

“You can imagine the level of capital flight spent to go and train abroad, but you can have it done here. This aircraft is the most suitable aircraft to learn how to fly because of its safety level and its ability to glide.

“We commend the government for making this happen, in a few months we are going to have our hangers to service the West Africa market. The aircraft can be used as a means of tackling insecurity. In South Africa, it is used to deter poachers and we can do it too against the menace of bandits”
