  • Spotlight on Adekunle Akerele: Transforming Public Health through Data Modernization in Polio Eradication and Immunization

Spotlight on Adekunle Akerele: Transforming Public Health through Data Modernization in Polio Eradication and Immunization

    By Ayooluwa Jaiyeola

In the rapidly evolving world of public health, data is the foundation for informed decision-making, particularly for efforts towards eradicating diseases and protecting vulnerable populations. Dr Adekunle Akerele, a visionary leader in health informatics and epidemiology, is revolutionizing how data is used to enhance polio eradication and immunization programs globally. With a career of over 15 years dedicated to developing or leveraging innovative digital tools and data systems, Dr Akerele’s work stands as a beacon of progress in the fight against vaccine-preventable diseases across the world

    Innovating Public Health with Data

Akerele’s journey in public health data management is marked by his commitment to improving how countries collect, analyze, and utilize health data for immunization and disease surveillance. His extensive experience spans multiple regions, focusing on optimizing immunization systems and ensuring that accurate, timely data guides public health responses. Through his work, Dr Akerele has shown that data-driven solutions are vital for strengthening health systems, especially in resource-limited settings with complex health challenges.

One of Akerele’s most notable contributions is his role in transforming polio eradication efforts is data systems modernization. He developed and implemented real-time performance management dashboards to track the activities of health workers involved in polio eradication. These dashboards provided crucial insights into vaccination coverage, officer performance, and health facility distribution, enabling quicker responses to gaps in coverage and improving accountability in the field.

By integrating immunization health information systems, Dr Akerele demonstrated that streamlining data flow, makes it easier for health officials to track vaccine distribution and population coverage. His work ensured that real-time data could inform decision-making during supplementary immunization activities (SIAs), ultimately contributing to the successful effort to eradicate polio.

    Capacity Building for Sustainable Impact

Akerele is not just a technical expert; he is also a passionate advocate for building local capacity. Understanding that long-term success in public health requires local ownership, he has dedicated much of his work to training health professionals, government officials, and data teams on advanced data management and analytics tools. He has led over 100 capacity building sessions across the world empowering health experts across over 30 countries to independently manage their immunization and surveillance systems, creating more resilient and sustainable public health infrastructures.

His work in training data teams to use advanced analytics and GIS tools has been instrumental in improving disease surveillance. Dr Akerele’s expertise in data visualization and spatial analysis has helped identify high-risk areas for polio transmission and poor vaccinated children, enabling targeted vaccination campaigns that have contributed to polio eradication efforts in several countries.

Transforming Immunization Data Reporting in Nigeria

For years, tracking the lifeblood of child health in Nigeria—immunization data—was a daunting challenge. Health workers diligently administered vaccines across vast distances, but crucial information about which child received what vaccine, where, and when often took weeks, even months, to reach decision-makers. The data, compiled manually and transported physically, was prone to errors and delays, making it impossible to manage vaccine stocks effectively or respond to outbreaks in real time.

Dr. Adekunle Sunday Akerele saw this as an opportunity to improve the system. Armed with data science insights and a deep understanding of public health challenges. He implemented a system where health workers from over 10,000 health facilities across Nigeria transmit daily immunization data via simple SMS, bypassing the traditional bottlenecks. Dr. Akerele led the development of an SMS-based reporting system, where health workers send text messages containing immunization data, such as vaccine doses administered and current stock levels. These messages are automatically uploaded to a centralized server, feeding into a real-time digital dashboard that health officials can access. This breakthrough ensured that critical information was available instantly, dramatically improving the speed and responsiveness of Nigeria’s immunization programs. Initially piloted in Nasarawa State, the SMS reporting system expanded rapidly, reaching 18 states across Nigeria, encompassing approximately 10,000 health facilities. The scalability and effectiveness of the system highlights its success in improving immunization data quality and accessibility nationwide.

Dr. Akerele explains, “The challenge wasn’t a lack of dedication from health workers, it was the bottleneck in getting their valuable information to where it could be used effectively, when it could be used effectively.”

A Visionary Leader in Disease Surveillance and Immunization Data

Dr Akerele has also played pivotal role in improving immunization data management systems, especially in the context of global health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. His development of dashboards to track COVID-19 vaccine distribution and administration has helped countries monitor vaccination progress in real time, ensuring vaccines reach the populations that need them most.

By combining his expertise in data science with his passion for public health, Dr Akerele has developed tools that help guide immunization strategies, track disease outbreaks, and improve the quality of health data systems worldwide. His work has strengthened the global immunization effort, ensuring that vaccines are distributed efficiently and that public health decisions are based on robust, timely data.

    Research and Recognition

Dr. Akerele’s extensive research and contributions to public health are well-documented, with his work—including the study “Improving Routine Immunization Data Quality using Daily Short Message System Reporting Platform: An Experience from Nasarawa State, Nigeria,” published in PLOS ONE, “Disparities in mobile phone access and maternal health service utilization in Nigeria: a population-based survey” published in international Journal of medical informatics, “Determinants of improved data consistency across routine immunization data tools for health facilities in Kano State, Nigeria” paving the way for future innovations in health data management.

A Global Impact in Public Health

From polio eradication in Pakistan to vaccination campaigns in other regions, Dr Akerele’s impact on public health has been profound. His work in modernizing data systems and improving disease surveillance has helped improve health outcomes in multiple countries, including Nigeria, Afghanistan, Sudan, and others. As a result, millions have benefited from more efficient immunization programs, and countless lives have been saved.

As global health challenges continue to evolve, Dr Akerele’s work underscores the critical importance of data in shaping public health responses. His commitment to leveraging technology and data-driven solutions highlights the transformative power of modern health information systems. In a world where the need for swift, accurate, and actionable data is more urgent than ever, leaders like Dr Adekunle Akerele are helping to shape the future of public health.

    A Legacy of Innovation

As the world faces new and ongoing public health challenges, Dr Akerele’s legacy of innovation and leadership in public health informatics will continue to inspire future generations. Through his work to modernize data systems, enhance disease surveillance, and improve immunization coverage,Dr Akerele is creating a future where technology supports stronger, more resilient health systems—ensuring that no child is left behind in the fight against preventable diseases.

In recognition of his contributions, Akerele’s work has had a lasting impact on global health, setting a new standard for integrating data and technology in public health. His approach to modernizing disease eradication and immunization programs continues to influence public health strategies worldwide.

Through his work, Dr. Akerele has not only enhanced immunization program efficiency in Nigeria but also set a new precedent for integrating technology into public health strategies globally. His pioneering use of SMS-based data reporting has empowered health workers, equipped decision-makers with actionable intelligence, and contributed to a more resilient health system. Dr. Akerele’s visionary leadership continues to inspire and demonstrate the profound impact of combining innovation with a commitment to public health

  • The JéGO story: Illuminating Africa’s future

The JéGO story: Illuminating Africa’s future

JéGO isn’t your average startup. It’s a dream sparking into reality, fueled by a relentless pursuit of innovation and a deep desire to revolutionize Africa’s energy landscape. This is JéGO’s story, a pioneering startup not just building electric vehicles but crafting a sustainable future.

The spark that ignited JéGO wasn’t born in a sterile boardroom, but in a lifelong love affair with cars and technology.

Visionaries at JéGO saw beyond the thrill of the ride, envisioning colossal battery packs as lifelines, not just for electric vehicles, but for entire communities struggling with energy scarcity. This dream propelled them into the world of autonomous electric vehicles (EVs) – a world where JéGO’s creations wouldn’t just move people efficiently, but distribute energy and essential resources like a digital spine across Africa.

JéGO’s mission is clear: to harness the power of technology and create clean, sustainable energy solutions. Their focus lies in developing modular clean energy systems that can power homes, businesses, and electric vehicles. It’s a two-pronged attack, combating the current energy crisis while paving the way for a greener future.

Africa’s energy challenge is undeniable. Millions live in darkness, their potential dimmed by a lack of access to electricity. Fossil fuels, though abundant, hold Africa back from a sustainable future. Recognizing this, JéGO’s solutions align perfectly with a continent yearning for a brighter tomorrow.

A ray of hope cuts through the darkness: renewable energy is on the rise in Africa. Solar power, the fastest-growing source, is fueled by falling costs and forward-thinking government initiatives. Here’s where JéGO steps in, perfectly positioned to bridge the energy gap and provide clean, reliable power to millions of Africans.

JéGO’s vision isn’t a solitary journey. Their strong partnership with Coscharis Technologies Limited exemplifies their commitment to making a difference. Together, they aim to distribute portable energy systems throughout Africa and underserved communities globally. Imagine the impact – thousands empowered with reliable energy, and a boost to the region’s electric vehicle market, a market ripe for JéGO’s innovative EVs.

Building JéGO wouldn’t have been possible without a remarkable team. Each member brings a unique skillset to the table; team members stem from Apple, Microsoft, Tesla, Meta and public sector.

JéGO isn’t interested in prototypes gathering dust. They have sales, distribution partners, and leasing options in place, a testament to their ability to deliver and create real value.

But JéGO’s vision stretches far beyond the showroom floor. They’re leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to build smarter solutions. Imagine AI systems constantly monitoring energy consumption and production, optimizing the use of renewable resources for maximum efficiency and cost savings. This is the magic behind JéGO’s smart energy monitoring.

Self-driving cars are no longer science fiction. JéGO is developing autonomous EVs equipped with advanced AI algorithms, not just for safe and efficient self-driving capabilities, but to transform these vehicles into mobile energy distribution units – a game-changer for remote areas. And because scalability is key, AI aids in predicting energy demand, managing grid loads, and optimizing the deployment of JéGO’s clean energy systems. The result? A more resilient and adaptable energy infrastructure for Africa.

According to Oswald Osaretin Guobadia, a director at the organization, “the African market is poised for astronomical growth.  To enable this we must focus on the hard problems of which energy is. JéGO was founded to create an energy ecosystem that addresses mobility and home life”

JéGO understands that EVs alone aren’t the silver bullet. While e-bikes are a step in the right direction, they don’t address the larger issue. JéGO’s vision focuses on solving the energy crises with their large battery packs, usable for emergency power backup and other critical applications. This sets them apart from competitors solely focused on transportation. JéGO symbolizes energy on the go. Owning a JéGO PowerPod or electric vehicle means being a progressive individual who cannot afford downtime. It signifies an individual moving forward, being innovative, and building the future of Africa.  The J in JéGO represents the individual(Jé meaning I in french), it takes the community to build an individual, there are several Js in the J logo which symbolizes that it takes many individuals to build a true sustainable community.

JéGO is more than a startup; it’s a movement advocating for a sustainable future. As JéGO means “big step or progression” in Wolof a Senegalese language. Their passion, innovation, and strategic partnerships fuel their journey. They invite you to join them in transforming energy distribution and creating a brighter future for Africa, one illuminated by clean energy and opportunity. Dive deeper into the JéGO vision: JéGO Vision Video. This is the story of a dream taking charge, a story waiting to be written with you.

  • SEforALL board renews term for CEO Ogunbiyi

SEforALL board renews term for CEO Ogunbiyi

The Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) Governance Board has approved Damilola Ogunbiyi for a second five-year term as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) following great strides the organisation made under her leadership.

It said the decision was to enable just, equitable and sustainable energy transitions that ensure better quality of life and opportunities for people living in developing regions.

Recognised as a trailblazer during her first term, which began in 2020, Ms. Ogunbiyi, who is the first CEO to have her appointment renewed, led an ambitious expansion of SEforALL’s global influence and country support, providing clear pathways to accelerate progress towards universal energy access and advancing a just and equitable energy transition in countries that stand at the greatest risk of being left behind.

Under her SEforALL, through a range of innovative programmes and initiatives, established working relationships with over 200 partners, and supported over 90 countries globally.

Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) is an international organisation that works in partnership with the United Nations and leaders in government, the private sector, financial institutions, civil society and philanthropies to drive faster action towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) – access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all by 2030 – in line with the Paris Agreement on climate. SEforALL works to ensure a clean energy transition that leaves no one behind and brings new opportunities for everyone to fulfill their potential.

Under Ogunbiyi’s leadership, SEforALL has prioritised evidence-based support to in-country capacity building that is driving policy, project, and ecosystem action with sustainable energy solutions towards climate and development priorities.

This led to securing $1.3 trillion commitments through Energy Compacts to support the achievement of SDG7, in partnership with UN-Energy, enabling the first-time capture of energy specific voluntary SDG7 commitments, aligned with Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Through this, 129 million people have gained access to electricity while 22 million others gained access to clean cooking through the Energy Compact commitments.

The organisation also raised $40 million as subsidy to bridge the gap for new mini-grid and high-capacity standalone solar systems that supported Sierra Leone, Madagascar, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Benin and Nigeria through the Universal Energy Facility (UEF), a results-based financing facility and multi-donor platform managed by SEforALL while 330 young women from the Global South have been trained in the sustainable energy sector and benefited from career development.

The organisation, under her leadership, supported eight Presidencies of the G20 and the UNFCCC COP – Saudia Arabia, Italy, Indonesia, India and Brazil under G20 and the UK, Egypt and the UAE under COP to advance just and equitable energy transitions.

The organisation also supported Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Barbados and Sierra Leone to develop Energy Transition and Investment Plans, thus providing an opportunity for these countries to build energy systems that support economic and social development and achieve net-zero emissions. Additionally, SEforALL supported the development of national integrated energy plans (IEPs) to help direct resources effectively and efficiently to help Malawi, Nigeria and Madagascar achieve goals for electrification and clean cooking access.

The initiative was conceived by the founder, Odita Sunday-Udemaguna, an influential journalist and humanitarian who noted that “In our larger society, there are men and women who are silently working assiduously behind the scenes to oil our nation’s wheel of progress.

“These people are SILENT HEROES in their own right but have largely remained unsung and under-celebrated. Believe it or not, they are the reason our nation has made the modest progress recorded in different spheres in contemporary times.”
