  • Samsung Launches Two New Smartphones Galaxy S9 & S9+

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. on Friday introduced Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ smartphones in Nigeria in the bid to re-imagine the way people communicate, share and experience the world.

The Original Equipment Manufacturer(OEM) said its inroad into the mobility market space in Nigeria for the year 2018 would be a pathfinder for awesome innovation for communication, and re-invented life-style experiences.

Made for an age in which consumers increasingly communicate and express themselves more with images, videos and emojis, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ has been designed to drive innovation with advanced camera features.

Redesigned with a new Dual Aperture lens that powers an innovative low light camera, Super Slow-mo video capabilities and personalised AR Emoji, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ ensure users do not miss a moment and make their everyday epic.

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ deliver an enhanced entertainment experience with powerful stereo speakers tuned by AKG, immersive audio with Dolby Atmos® and a refined edge-to-edge Infinity Display – a key staple in Samsung’s design heritage. In addition, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ will come with the new SmartThings app, which unites Samsung’s existing IoT services into one single, smart experience.

“The way we use our smartphones has changed as communication and self-expression has evolved,” said Jingak Chung, Managing Director, Samsung Electronics West Africa. “With the Galaxy S9 and S9+, we have reimagined the smartphone camera. Not only do the Galaxy S9 and S9+ enable consumers to shoot great photos and videos anywhere, it’s a smartphone that’s designed to help them connect to others and express themselves in a way that’s unique and personal to them.”

    Camera Re-imagined

Today’s cameras are for more than taking pictures – they’re for connecting and communicating. Consumers want a smartphone camera with state-of-the-art technology, so they can express themselves with high-quality images and tools to tell their own, unique story.

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ cameras are built with these consumers in mind, with a Super Speed Dual Pixel sensor with dedicated processing power and memory to take amazing shotswith high photo quality.

The Galaxy S9 and S9+’s camera features include:

    • Super Slow-mo: Make every day moments epic with dynamic, slow-motion video that captures 960 frames per second.

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ also offer automatic Motion Detection, an intelligent feature that detects movement in the frame and automatically begins to record – all users have to do is set up the shot.

After capturing the Super Slow-mo video, users can select background music from 35 different options or add a tune from their favorite playlist.

Users can also easily create, edit and share GIF files with a simple tap in three playful styles of looping to watch the action over and over again.

    • Low Light Camera: Good lighting is the secret to any great photo. But often, photos are taken in less-than-ideal lighting conditions and most smartphone cameras have a fixed aperture that can’t adjust to low or bright lighting environments resulting in grainy or washed out pictures.

Similar to the way the iris of a human eye expands and contracts, Samsung’s Dual Aperture  (F1.5 / F2.4) automatically lets in more light when it’s dark and less light when it’s too bright, taking photos that are crisp and clear.

    • AR Emoji: Samsung lets users create an emoji that looks, sounds and acts like them.

AR Emojiuses a data-based machine learning algorithm, which analyses a 2D image of the user and maps out more than 100 facial features to create a 3D model that reflects and imitates expressions, like winks and nods, for true personalisation.

AR Emoji shares users’ real-life emotionsnot only in video but also with a range of stickers and uses a standard AGIF file format so users can share their emojis across most third-party messaging platforms.

    • Bixby: Samsung’s intelligence platform, integrated into the camera, uses augmented reality and deep learning technologies to provide helpful information about a user’s surroundings.

With real-time object detection and recognition, Bixby instantly generates information directly on top of the image that the camera is pointing at.

Users can translate foreign languages and currency in real time with Live Translation, learn about their surroundings, purchase products seen in the real world and track calories throughout the day.

    Entertainment Reimagined

Smartphones are often our go-to choice for entertainment, which is why Samsung created a device that offers premium sound experiences with stereo speakers tuned by AKG.

Whether users are watching their favorite movie or streaming their favorite artist’s latest album, sounds are clear, crisp and rich in quality.

    Smartphones

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ also support Dolby Atmos, giving the effect of 360-degree sound. Its audio experience is complemented by Samsung’s revolutionary Infinity Display.

First introduced on the Galaxy S8, the bold, bright Super AMOLED Infinity Display blends right into the phone with virtually no distracting notches.

With adaptive contrast enhancement, users can use their device even in direct sunlight.

A Device that Fits with the Connected Lifestyle

As the first smartphone to support the new SmartThings app, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ are the central hub to manage every facet of the connected lifestyle at home, at the office or on the go.

The SmartThings app will be introduced with the Galaxy S9 and S9+ and will connect to other Samsung and non-Samsung devices.

The Best Comes Standard with the Galaxy Foundation

Samsung sets the gold standard for smartphones with IP68 water and dust resistance and wireless charging and goes a step beyond with the Galaxy S9 and S9+.

The devices now support expandable memory of up to 400GB with a Micro SD Card and are equipped with the latest premium application processors offering powerful performance and sophisticated image processing.

In addition, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ give users peace of mind knowing that their phone is protected by Knox 3.1, Samsung’s latest defense-grade security platform.

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ support three different biometric authentication options – iris, fingerprint, and facial recognition – so users can choose the way they want to protect their device and applications.

The devices feature Intelligent Scan, a new verification that intelligently uses the collective strength of iris scanning and facial recognition technology to quickly and conveniently unlock a user’s phone in various situations.

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ also introduce Dedicated Fingerprint, giving users the option to use a different fingerprint to access Secure Folder than the one used to unlock the phone.

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ are available in Nigeria from Friday, March 23rd, 2018 in Midnight Black, Titanium Gray, and Lilac Purple colours.

To purchase any of the devices, customers can visit the network providers, MTN, Airtel, Etisalat and GLO; Samsung Experience Stores, and select retail partners nationwide.

“Customers are encouraged to purchase their S9 smartphones in Nigeria from authorized dealers so they can enjoy a 24-month warranty,” said Director, Information Technology & Mobile (IM), Samsung Electronics West Africa, Olumide Ojo.

  • SMWLagos: Youths unemployability and digital technology

Organisers of Social Media Week Lagos (SMWLagos) 2018, in a week-long event, gathered thousands of social media and tech lovers across all works of life to learn, share knowledge and collaborate on the future of work, especially with the several disruptions from technological advancements.
The conference which provides insights and inspiration to help people and businesses understand how to achieve more in a hyper-connected world, saw job creation through Social Media and technological innovations dominating panel discussions and startup stands.
There is no denying that technological disruption and its effects on employment has become a sensitive part of every economic discourse across the globe. In Nigeria also, from academic to social as well as political, there is no difference.
In an era marked by rapid advances in Automation and Artificial Intelligence (AI), affiliate marketing, Coding and Data mining, an increase in jobs lost and jobs gained cannot be overemphasized.
At SMWLagos, the largest tech and digital media event in Africa, Panelists urged young Nigerians to leverage on the benefits that digital technology provides to position themselves for employment.
Speaking during a session at the conference, with the theme: “The Freelance Economy: Technology and the Future of Jobs, Moses Oruaze Dickson, Managing Solicitor, TRIAX Solicitors, stated that technology is creating a new wave of digital entrepreneurs, who can provide their skills and expertise at the comfort of their home, without having to resume in a conventional office environment.
This trend, according to him, would support the government in solving the unemployment problem in the country, which has led many youths to be involved in criminal activities. “While the government can provide enabling environment through policies and technology infrastructure, young people can create opportunities for themselves through technology,” he said.
Oruaze also emphasized the role of training in creating these digital jobs, stressing that training in- and out-of-school youth with basic and advanced digital skills will connect young people with job opportunities in the digital economy, leading to innovation, higher productivity and competitiveness, expanding markets, access to work and entrepreneurship opportunities.
No doubt, this skill set is able to retrain a graduate who might find it difficult to get employment, on how to succeed through digital entrepreneurship. This is also able to help address the Nigerian graduates’ unemployability challenge.
Confirming this stance, Keji Giwa, CEO of Career Insights stated that the youths can only leverage on the transformative power of technology to create jobs for themselves when they are equipped with a range of digital skills.
Giwa further opined that while technology can enhance education, reduce youth unemployment and promote social and economic development, it is the responsibility of young people to explore these opportunities.
Her words: “Skills like coding, web development, graphic design can provide employment for young people and these skills can be offered on freelance and hire platforms. Today, people do not need to wait for the government to get jobs, they can create jobs for themselves if they acquire digital skills.”
Worthy of note is the fact that the technology-driven world in which we live is filled with promises but also challenges; cars that drive selves, machines that read X-rays, and algorithms that respond to customer-service inquiries are all manifestations of powerful new forms of automation.
Yet even as these innovations increase around us and improve our lives, their use will undeniably substitute for some work activities humans currently perform. Unfortunately, the concern used to be the rate of unemployed youths in the country, who account for a significant portion of the nation’s population. Now, it is sadly the unemployability because the school system is not structured to train students for a technology-driven society.
However, the take home from 2018 SMWLagos is for young people to invest in themselves by acquiring digital skills while also leveraging on social media to position themselves and make themselves marketable in the job market.
The event succeeded in gathering thousands of people to be inspired by over 300 world class thoughts leaders, innovators, business practitioners, and pop culture luminaries from Nigeria, across Africa and around the world.

Tech4dev is a non-profit social enterprise that seeks to create proactive and reactive technological solutions to help solve the world’s greatest problems, with primary focus on education, public health and civic engagement, backed by Microsoft, came up with the Nigerian Women Techsters (NWT), an initiative that is aimed at helping young women between the ages of 18-40 get the training and support needed to acquire coding skills.
Training in the first cohort began in 11th November in Ondo state and subsequently in Ekiti and Oyo States. The women were trained in the three training tracks of Web and Mobile Applications Development, Embedded Systems and Games Development as well as an online business training module. The training which lasted 12 weeks has seen to the birth of over 400 women coders.
On Saturday, 3rd of March, 2018, to mark the International Women’s Day themed #PressforProgress and #MakeWhatsNext, the women, who had undergone training under the Nigerian Women Techsters Initiative were graduated at the Curator’s Hub. This event, powered by Microsoft, featured Keynote addresses from Kitan Aboluwarin, Project Lead, SeedDev and Dr. Ronke Thompson, Member, NWT Advisory Board and Lecturer, Computer Science Department,  Federal University of Technology, Akure. Both speakers stressed the importance of creating an enabling environment for women to thrive in the tech ecosystem. While Aboluwarin admonished the participants to never get too comfortable but to constantly seek knowledge, Thompson encouraged beneficiaries of the programme to think themselves activists for other women henceforth by pressing for improved conditions and access to development training.
Olusola Amusan, Philanthropy Lead at Microsoft Nigeria reiterated that Microsoft believes that empowering women in STEM fields drives economic growth, equality and innovation. “We want to create a culture where more women are attracted to the STEM fields and believe in themselves as having a career path in the technology industry. Despite the stats, a new generation of ‘girl geeks’ are making a real mark on the technology sector and propelling the economic growth of their countries forward, like Senegalese, Mariéme Jamme, CEO of IT organisation, SpotOne. We need more female leaders like this. It is hard enough to navigate a career path without a mentor, particularly without female mentors in STEM that can act as ambassadors for young women” he said.
Speaking on her experience as a participant, Ngozi Aduloju, 40-year old mother of four said “For me, the Games Development class has not only impacted my life but has set a lot of things in motion for my future and that of my generation. I have a 13 year old son who picked up interest in my classes, we became a team; studying and watching online tutorials together. I now have an understanding of what it takes to make a game and have become more appreciative of what it takes to conceptualize a game that can actually keep me interested. I also totally agree that educating a woman implies educating a nation because my kids have developed some interest in coding and they share this interest with their friends too. That way, we keep spreading the attitude.”
The graduating participants presented their team projects, pointing out their relevance to sustainable development in their communities; from games that can help sensitize the public on Lassa fever, devices that are useful in smart farming, an application that allows people to donate used books, etc.
While speaking at the event, Peace Odili, Education Programs Manager, Tech4dev, said, “The project is set for a period of three years during which Tech4Dev as well as other supporting agencies intend to take the programme to other African counties thereby giving African women an opportunity to develop themselves.”
Speaking further, she said, “This vision is what is taking us to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) in New York. • Data protection experts task NASS on legal framework

Data protection experts task NASS on legal framework

African Academic Network on Internet Policy have requested that the National Assembly inserts the following in a data protection framework or bill; use of personal data must be in accordance with the purpose for which it was collected, consent of the individual must be obtained prior to collecting his/her personal data; rights of the individual to seek legal remedies for misuse and or unauthorized accessed to his/her personal data must be guaranteed”.

This was the submission at the two day seminar/Colloquium of the African Academic Network on Internet Policy held at IITA, Ibadan recently.
The Ibadan School of Government and Public Policy, (ISGPP), was the host institution of the African Academic Network on Internet Policy – a multidisciplinary problem solving Think-Tank.

The theme of the two day seminar which started on Monday was, ‘Privacy and Security: Building the Evidence Base and a multi-stakeholder action base for Personal Data Protection in Nigeria’. It was revealed at the seminar, that most African countries including Nigeria do not have data protection laws.

At the panel sessions, five primary concerns around the collection of the use of personal data both online and offline in Nigeria, they include,  the use of personal data may be incompatible with the purpose for which it was collected; individuals have no rights in relation to the collection, use and storage of their personal information; Nigerians are not offered adequate opportunities to consent to or opt out of data collection; there is limited to no transparency around the processing of personal data and there is limited information available around how this personal data is used and stored, leading to greater risk of a personal data breach; children are exposed to privacy risks online and often lack the legal capacity to give valid consent and may unknowingly disclose personal information to online platforms due to the appealing nature of their visual content.
In his opening remarks, the Executive vice chairman of ISGPP, Dr. Tunji Olaopa said that African continent is touted as fertile ground for Netpreneurs, Mobile institutions, increasing use of technology and leveraging the internet to address developmental challenges.

He added that, with the exponential increase in the use of personal information by businesses in technology age, data protection has become such a defining compelling agenda for priority attention in many countries worldwide. Olaopa emphasized that it is high time that Africa aligns itself with this global movement by coming up with sufficiently strong and intelligent data protection policy to drive the growth of the African Digital Economy.

While giving a brief overview of the African Academic Network on Internet Policy, member of the steering committee, Dr. Temitope Aladesanmi said that the formation of the group was as a result of the poor and low level of African voices specifically to Internet Policy and governance. He explained that the European Union General Data Protection Rule (GDPR) would come to effect May 2019 and as such, it has significant impact for some local organizations who are in business with the EU maybe required to conform with the standard.

“One of the direct output of the main conference was the imperative of the need to begin an immediate discourse with respect to data protection and security in Africa.”

According to Co-creation Hub Nigeria,  Emmanuel Okochu, said that the biggest challenge in Data Protection in Nigeria is that most users do not have a detailed understanding of positive sides of data protection entails.

“The people you seek to protect are the ones who don’t understand why they should be protected. When you try to explain to people how dangerous it is to keep posting every thing about them online”.

Several representatives came from other African including, Nigeria, South Africa, Mauritius, Kenya, Ghana, Code voir to mention a few.

According to Tope Ogundipe of Paradigm Initiative said; “it is dangerous to exist in an environment where you don’t know how your information is used. It is possible you are put under surveillance without any legal framework”.
