  • Five new things you can do with Google

Five new things you can do with Google

Google specifically builds its platforms and products to be globally relevant. Users in Nigeria also have access to these products, which will help them access information with ease. Here are 5 cool things you can do with Google that you probably didn’t know about.

    1. Chat or send SMS in any language…including in Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa

If you are like most Nigerians, then you probably have a grandma, uncle or family member that prefers to read messages in either Igbo, Yoruba or Hausa. Did you know that Google can help you communicate with them in these languages and more? The next time you need to type a message on SMS, Whatsapp or any other messaging app, simply click on the Google  logo on your keyboard, and click on the translate icon and let Gboard do the translation for you.

Gboard is a new keyboard from Google for your Android or iPhone and It has all the things you would expect from a great keyboard — GIFs, emojis, and Glide Typing — plus Google Search built in. No more app switching; just search and send, right from your keyboard.

If Gboard isn’t installed on your phone, you can download it from the Apple store or the Android Play store.

    1. Find information on Health Conditions

Remember the last time you searched on Google for health information? Maybe a co-worker shook your hand and later found out she had pink eye, so you looked up “pink eye” to see whether it’s contagious. Or maybe you were worried about a loved one down with malaria. By simply typing in ‘Malaria’, Google will show you health panels with information on malaria symptoms and treatments. Google has health knowledge panels available for over 800 common diseases and ailments. This is now accessible to Nigerians and Google has partnered with the University of Ibadan to ensure that answers are reviewed by Nigerian doctors.

    1. Get a list and times for movies showing at the cinema near you

When it’s Friday and you want to spend the evening watching a movie with that special someone. Challenge is you don’t know what movies are showing at the cinema. No problem. Just ask Google. How? Just type ‘what movies are showing at the Ikeja mall’ into Google, and Google will give a list of movies showing at Ikeja mall, plus the times those movies are showing. And if you are in Ikeja, simple check for the movies showing at the cinema close to you. It works the same way. But hey, don’t take my word for it, try it out yourself!

    1. Find information on Nollywood movies

Interested in finding out information about that Nollywood movies? No problem with that. Make Google do the selection for you, type the name of the ‘nollywood movie into search and let Google give you all the information, including the actors. Easy peasy!

    1. Get more details on what your favourite musician, movie or sport star is up to

With Posts on Google, entertainers and businesses can share visible updates directly to Google. This means you get your favourite star’s live update alongside your search results when you Google them.

Google announced the availability of Google Posts in Nigeria at Google for Nigeria, on 27 July.

Posts makes it possible for musicians, entertainers and other public figures to share updates, images and videos directly on Google, for people to see while they explore on the web. Nigeria is the third country where we’ve made this feature available and some of the country’s popular musicians are already using it.

Posts has been available for limited use since January 2016, initially only for US Presidents, then for some businesses, and, from March 2017, for all businesses that use Google My Business (except hotels & B&Bs), public figures, celebrities and things like movies, museums and sports teams. It is available in the US, Brazil and Nigeria.

Google Posts allow businesses and individuals to create posts that show up in the knowledge panel on Google Search and Google Maps. So, for example, if you search for the Nigerian music star Bez, you may see something like the image attached beneath this subheader.

NOTE: Posts expire after a week, unless they are event-based, in which case they expire after the event date.

  • YouTube Go launches in Nigeria

    YouTube Go launches in Nigeria

YouTube has announced that the YouTube Go app previewed at the recent Google for Nigeria event is now available for initial public download in Nigeria.

YouTube has been reimagined to meet the needs of the next generation of users in the new App, which is available for initial download in the Google Play Store. Youtube plans to continue to learn from our users to improve the app over time.

Speaking on the announcement, Johanna Wright, VP Product Management at YouTube Go, said: “The App has been designed to take into account the challenges faced by YouTube users in countries like Nigeria, such as data cost and connectivity. With YouTube Go, we are making it possible for everyone in Nigeria to be able to discover videos that they love, regardless of their network status or data consumption preferences.”

With more Nigerians coming online every year, and most of them only using their mobiles for internet access, we are working hard to make products that are tailored to Nigerians’ specific needs.

“You can save videos for offline watching, and can choose what resolution video to save – basic quality or standard quality – giving you better control over how you use your precious data,” he added.

Built from the ground up to meet the needs of the growing online youth population, YouTube Go offers easy video downloading, phone-number sign-in, effortless searching, and more effective ways to control data use. It also features a home screen that shows both personalized recommendations as well as trending and popular videos nearby, allowing users to see the latest content that the people around are watching, upfront. It offers a ‘preview video’ function to make it easier to decide what to watch or download.

Before developing this App, the team spent thousands of hours gathering information, conducting interviews, doing testing, and refining the product. The result is YouTube Go, an entirely new app that is designed to be offline first.

  • ‘Wasted’ N48m ICT project in Ogun

‘Wasted’ N48m ICT project in Ogun

[A computer] looks like a television, I have seen it, but I have never touched it.

Tope, a 13-year old student, has only seen a computer a couple of times. He looked dreamy when he described it. “It looks like a television,” he said in Yoruba. He was quick to add that he never touched it and of course, he doesn’t know how to use it. His 15-year old brother, having lunch close by chimed in about his superior knowledge. “There is a cybercafé a bit far away from here.  I see these computers when I go there, and I have even touched them, but I don’t have money to pay for pressing the computer,” Kayode, Tope’s older brother boasted.

Their father, who rides a motorcycle and own a sparse tailoring shop in Ijebu-Igbo, cannot afford to buy a computer. Tope’s school certainly does not have such modern facilities. So his ‘television’ answer could have been accepted if a government-owned N24 million ICT centre is not a five minute walk from their father’s shop.

    Welcome to Ijebu-Igbo ICT Centre

The provision of ICT centres in Ijebu North/Ijebu East/Ogun Waterside Constituency was part of the constituency projects approved by the House of Representatives in 2015.

Mr Adesegun Adekoya, who represents these constituents, facilitated the creation of the ICT centres to “encourage education and promote access and exposure to new technologies in the information and communication world.” These centres situated at Ago-Iwoye and Ijebu-Igbo cost N 48 million for execution.

In the first house on Agbowa Street, Ijebu-Igbo sits a palatial green two-storey building that houses the Ijebu-Igbo ICT Centre. Painted in green-white-green, a small sign board fills you with expectations of the many services provided at the centre; this includes, typesetting, photocopying, colour printing, free computer training, and more.  On the ground floor, there is a cement shop with stacks of cement for sale. After three minutes of knocking on the brown wooden door, a young boy opens the door; does not say a word and returns to his seat. There are three other children playing around the room. There are three seated adults chatting away. There are twelve other desktops.

Raising his voice, so that the booming music in the room does not swallow his voice, a fidgety attendant responds to questions about the use of the centre. He was unsure of the number of people that have undergone ICT training at the centre.  When asked whether the training were free, he refuses to speak saying that it is only his supervisor that can answer the question. Attempts to reach the supervisor were abortive.

    The Ago-Iwoye ICT Centre

The Ago-Iwoye ICT centre located at the Ijebu North/Ijebu East/Ogun Waterside Constituency office, on Adenugba Street. A large banner announces the Hon Adekoya’s largesse to his community. The old dull brown building with mouldy stairs is not so different from its Ijebu-Igbo counterpart. The 24 million project is in a small room with frayed carpets. There are fifteen computers in the room; one printer; two generators sit at the entrance of the room.

When a request to browse was made, the ICT instructor explains that the ICT centre does not offer such services since their Wi-Fi is bad.  “People will come from Abuja to fix it.” He says as he hands his laptop already connected to an internet modem.

There is no electricity, although, there were two generators in the building. Two young ladies sat behind the computers, chatting away, while the ‘instructor’ was coaching a recent secondary school leaver in Economics.

After browsing incognito for about 10 minutes; the instructor was asked for the cost of the services. He requested for any amount deemed worthy for the serviced. He received N200.

Mr. Joshua Osiyemi, the project monitoring officer from Tracka says that not much learning takes place there, since students have to pay a particular amount of money for the training.

“Residents are required to pay N500 for identification cards, N1000 for desktop publishing and N300 per hour for internet browsing.”

There are two educational institutions where the ICT centres are located, Olabisi Onabanjo University and Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic. Also, several youths and children live and work around the centres, (which was supposedly created for their benefit), yet, they are oblivious to its existence. From conversations with some students in Ago-Iwoye, it is clear that majority think that ICT is synonymous to Google, which makes their assignments and projects easier.

The deployment of technology to solve practical problems is gray to them, while their counterparts in Ile Ife, Lagos and Ota are founding tech startups and inventing solutions.

When one thinks of rural settlements, a picture of petty farmers/traders with families living in poor conditions comes to mind. This depiction, in most parts of Nigeria, is not far from reality. They are often deprived of information and access to growth and modernity, left behind in the fast-paced and ever evolving technological world.

As of 2016, over 51% of Nigerians live in rural areas. Therefore, a free ICT training in towns such as Ijebu Igbo could kick-start development and a positive change in the quality of life of its dwellers. They would realize that farming can be done more efficiently, trading could be global, and there are numerous skills to be acquired. Their children’s curiosity would be piqued, they would challenge the status quo and embark on a journey to change their world.

However, many rural dwellers in Nigeria are abandoned at the mercy of politicians who swindle them by implementing high-costing projects of little benefit those in need. They are forced to stick with obsolete and laborious methods because the information that should have been accessible to them free of charge comes at a paid service, courtesy of their representatives.

The House of Representative member could not be reached at the time of this report.  However, in a statement through his lawyer (Titi Banjoko), he noted that residents have to pay to ensure an effective centre.

“The commitment of the Federal Government on the projects stopped at the provision and installation of those items and ICT facilities, and not beyond that especially in terms of maintenance, repairs and operations.”

Mr. Joshua reasoned that the project would have made more impact if ICT trainings were widely publicized and made attractive for residents in both towns. “If they had made ICT lessons an interesting adventure, the youth will jump at it. They will learn fast and it would have made more impact.”

If ICT education for the youth and children living in the rural areas is not well executed, then what chance do the likes of Tope and Kayode have in competing in this tech age?

  • Landrush Phase launches .africa domain

    Landrush Phase launches .africa domain

The Landrush Phase has launched a new domain called .africa. The new domain for .africa domain name system offers companies, organizations and individuals to apply for domain names containing keywords valuable enough to pay a premium for. Domain names with single words that attract heavy everyday use are very typical during this Phase.

.africa is the top-level domain name system for the continent of Africa. It is open to all individuals and entities in Africa or ones that identify with Africa, globally. .africa domains are available in Landrush Phase from Web4Africa, an accredited .africa domain name registrar, said Managing Director, Web4Africa, Mr. Oluniyi Ajao.

This Landrush Phase is not exclusive to the .africa top-level domain but is normal with all newly-launched domain name extensions. All things being equal, there is a much better chance that the domain can be obtained during this Phase.

Speaking on the Landrush Phase which ends this week, Mr. Oluniyi Ajao, reiterated certain names that have got prior rights associated with them will not go through unless the applicant has already specifically validated rights in the Mark Validation System (MVS) or Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) database. When processing a Landrush Application, Web4Africa will receive a Claims Notice if the string is registered in the MVS or TMCH.

At the end of the Landrush phase, he reemphasized, all uncontested domain applications will be delegated while all contested domain applications will proceed to an Auction Phase. Applicants will be notified by the .africa registry on the Auction process should this occur.

Domain auctions will last a minimum of 3 days. Any bids within the final 12 hours will extend any auction by an additional 24 hours.

.africa has already demonstrated serious interests from global brands and entities within Africa who are trademark owners as about 1,000 domains were successfully secured during the Sunrise Phase, making it one of the top ten largest number of domain name reservations during the sunrise phase of the new geographic Top Level Domain (gTLD) ‘s launch process.

The General Availability phase would follow, from 4th July 2017. The domains would then be available on a first-come-first-served basis.

“We are in Africa, and Africa is in us. We believe in the future of Africa and that .africa would offer Africans a strong identity on the World Wide Web”, Mr. Ajao said.

Established in 2002, Web4Africa is an ICANN Accredited Domain Name Registrar offering popular top-level domains (like .com, .net, .xyz, .africa) and country-code domains (like .ng, .za, .uk) to clients worldwide.  Based in Johannesburg South Africa, Web4Africa offers Web Hosting, Virtual Private Servers, Dedicated Servers and related solutions from 4 data centres across Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa.

  • Chowberry: Feeding Abuja poor families through technology

Chowberry: Feeding Abuja poor families through technology

In other to curb the menace of food poverty in Nigeria and Africa as a whole, Chowberry, a technology-driven social enterprise and innovation of a Nigerian tech entrepreneur, Oscar Ekponimo has recently partnered with charitable organisations to reach out to indigent families in Gishiri Village, a rural community in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The free food distribution was held in conjunction with food retailers and supermarkets in the city engaging with the innovative web-based software application called Chowberry to connect needy and impoverished families.

The foods distributed are those that would otherwise go to waste due to expiration and they were gathered through partnerships with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and charity organizations.

    Chowberry App

According to the founder of Chowberry, Ekponimo, The programme, Project FoodAccess is designed to provide nutritious food to selected families in various communities and help reduce the challenge of hunger and food deprivation.

Explaining how the Chowberry app works, Ekponimo stated that; “Using the Chowberry platform, our partner NGO use the service to source affordable nutrition, mainly food products nearing end of shelf-life listed by retail stores for the beneficiaries. The NGO is also responsible for pickup and distribution to the local and impoverished families. The recently held campaign was in Gishiri community and we aim to impact more families with Chowberry and improve our social enterprise while staying true to reaching households with affordable nutrition.’’

“Chowberry is a web-based software that helps retailers track and monitor food products approaching the end of shelf-life, the same monitored products are analysed and streamed as deep discount via a proprietary algorithm from which NGO’s and low-income earners can purchase affordable and low-priced food items to meet their nutrition needs,” he added.

It will be recalled that Chowberry after winning the prestigious Rolex Award for Enterprise in 2016, has enjoyed huge applaud and international recognition in its feat of feeding poor Nigerians through tech innovation.

  • Appzone to local innovators: take pride in innovations

Executive Director, Business Operations/Expansion, Appzone Limited, Mr Emeka Emetarom has advised indigenous innovators to be proud of their innovations and stop giving offshore tags to them.

He said most of the goods produced in the country are superior to their foreign equivalents, adding that “it is only the courage to showcase what we have in Nigeria that would attract the world to us”.

Emetarom who spoke on Thursday in Lagos also advised the government to keep an eye on Micro Finance Banks (MfBs) with a view to ensuring their survival as the informal sector forms the taproot of every viable economy.

He said: “Recession has hit the microfinance industry hard as well as other sectors. The reduced economic activity almost directly translates to increased loan default rates for MfBs and other lenders. However, I believe we are beyond the worst point now. The job losses increased dollar exchange rate, and the general fighting spirit of the average Nigerian all combine to create an atmosphere of new opportunity as small cottage industries start to spring up again, producing local equivalents of imported items we can no longer afford.

“I was inspired by a lady recently. She produces leather belts at her backyard. The quality felt like the kind I would expect to see a made in Italy sticker on, but to my surprise and total delight, it said made in Lagos. Such start-up ventures will find a huge market out there for their goods and will need the support of MfBs to grow. This will be a huge opportunity for the financial services sector, in general, and for MfBs in particular.”
