Mobile firm resolves malware issue in W2

    Our Reporter

Tecno, a smartphone brand has said it has fixed the security problem found on one of its smartphone models, W2.

The company in a statement reacting to reports of xHelper/Triada malware pre-installed in the smartphone said its security team had addressed the problem by releasing a fix.

This is coming after a security firm, named Secure-D, had reported that most Tecno W2 smartphones in Africa are infected with xHelper, a pre-installed malware signing mobile users up to subscription services without their permission.

According to the statement, it said in March 2018, that the Triada issue affected only a version of W2 devices across all series of TECNO mobile phones.

It also stated that at the initial time of detecting the issue, they put together a security team to work on the solution.

Consequently, the smartphone firm released the first official OTA fix to users on March 20th, 2018, with rigorous system tests and GMS tests set out by Google.

By April 30th, 2018, the official OTA fixes adapted for different versions of W2 devices were released, assuring that the problem was fixed once the consumer accepted the system update by installing the fix.

For current W2 users facing the Triada issue presently, the firm advises that users download the OTA fix on their phone for installation, or contact TECNO’s after-sales service support for assistance.

“At TECNO, we have always attached great importance to users’ data security and product safety. Every single software installed on each device runs through a series of rigorous security checks, such as our own security scan platform, Google Play Protect, GMS BTS, and VirusTotal test.

“In addition, a 90-day security patch update is periodically delivered to TECNO users to ensure that the security of our products and the protection of users’ devices from malware are not compromised.

“xHelper, which is similar to Triada, is a separate global mobile security issue that first appeared in 2019. We have deployed professional security tools such as GMS BTS and VirusTotal to detect the xHelper issue since last November.

“All of TECNO’s new releases and software maintenance for old products must go through the test. No reports of xHelper have ever been detected since then, the statement said.

ICT sector grows GDP by 17.8 percent, says Minister

    Blessing Olaifa, Abuja

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ibrahim Pantami on Monday described as heart-warming statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics that ICT sector has contributed about 17.8 percent to Gross Domestic Product of the country.

The Minister in a statement issued by his technical aide, Dr. Femi Adeluyi said the contribution is unprecedented.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) had on Monday released ‘Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product Report’ for Q2 2020.

“Nigeria’s GDP decreased by –6.10% (year-on-year) in real terms in the second quarter of 2020, largely attributable to significantly lower levels of both domestic and international economic activity during the quarter, which resulted from nationwide shutdown efforts aimed at containing the COVID-19 pandemic, ” the report said.

The non-oil sector contributed 91.07% to the nation’s GDP in Q2 2020 as opposed to the 8.93% contributed to total real GDP by the oil sector, the report added.

Dr. Pantami said, “it is worthy of note that the ICT sector contributed 17.83% to the total real GDP in Q2 2020, 20.54% higher than its contribution a year earlier and in the preceding quarter, in which it accounted for 14.07%.”

This contribution is unprecedented, he said.

The statement reads: “The Minister notes that the growing contribution of the ICT sector to the GDP is a direct result of the focused and committed effort of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.

“The strategic policy directions of the Federal Government include the inclusion of Digital Economy in the mandate of the Ministry, the unveiling and implementation of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy and the National Broadband Plan, amongst others.

“As of July 2020, the broadband penetration in the country was 42.02%, translating to a percentage increase of almost double digits in less than 1 year. This is another remarkable achievement.

“The unprecedented contribution of ICT to Nigeria’s GDP can also be attributed to dynamic and results-oriented leadership which has been acknowledged and appreciated by a wide spectrum of the stakeholders in the sector.

“The GDP Report has shown how critical the ICT sector is to the growth of our country’s digital economy and, by extension, the general economy.

“The Minister calls on all sectors to take advantage of the Federal Government’s new focus on the digital economy to enable and improve their processes through the use of ICTs. This would enhance the output of all the sectors of the economy and boost Nigeria’s GDP. “

Seven tips to recover ‘hacked’ WhatsApp account

    By Alao Abiodun

WhatsApp is one of the most popular instant messaging apps across countries of the world.

The Facebook-owned platform has more than 2 billion users and offers end-to-end encrypted chatting experience.

Many a times, fraudsters try to trick WhatsApp users to gain access to their six-digit verification code, which is basically an OTP used by WhatsApp to log-in to an account.

Giving someone your verification code will result in your WhatsApp account being hacked.

Using two-step verification saves you from your account being compromised even if someone gets their hands on your SIM card or your verification code.

This is a layer of additional security that acts like a password for your WhatsApp account.

Meanwhile, to avoid the hassle of recovering your account or restoring your phone to factory settings again, there is a need to take some necessary precautions.

Here are basic steps to recover your WhatsApp:

    • In order to get back your hacked WhatsApp account, you need to delete and reinstall WhatsApp on your device with your phone number.
    • You will receive a six-digit verification code via SMS that WhatsApp reads and logs you in automatically. Once you log-in, the hacker will be automatically logged out of your account.
    • If the hacker activates the two-step verification after gaining access to your WhatsApp account, you will have to wait for seven days to recover your account.
    • To secure your WhatsApp account from scammers, never share your activation code with anyone. Beware of the calls that ask you to share your personal information or ask you to install certain apps.
    • Another way to stop hackers from further using your WhatsApp account is to deactivate it. To do that, send an email to Support at support@whatsapp.com with the title “Lost/Stolen: Pls deactivate my account” in the body.
    • After deactivation, you have 30 days to reactivate your account.
    • Also, make sure to always check the WhatsApp web. Whatsapp Web is the extension of the Whatsapp messenger, used to synchronize your phone with your Computer. When hacked, Log on to your PC and click on the option ‘Log out from all the computers’.

Do not forget to activate the two-step verification. Another key thing to do is to quickly alert family and friends before they become victims.

How tech can help unemployed Nigerian youths thrive in pandemic

    Our Reporter

As the Nigerian economy continues to buckle under the weight of COVID-19 pandemic throwing thousands into the labour market, technology has been identified as a panacea that will help Nigerian youths thrive and increasing their income.

This position is held by Crown Interactive, a Lagos-based software solutions company headed by Nigeria-born IT expert, Wumi Oghoetuoma.

Crown Interactive revealed, “It goes without saying that Covid-19 has affected the livelihoods of many Nigerians. Our unemployment rate was already at a disappointing high and newer projections predict that it may rise to 33.6% by the end of 2020 – that’s 39.4 million Nigerians. While supporting micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) is a major part of what we do, here at CICOD, we are also committed to providing young people with viable job opportunities so that we can begin to provide real solutions for youth unemployment.”

Speaking more about its unique offering to empower Nigerian youths, the organization revealed, “With our affiliate programme: Independent CICOD Executives (ICE), we give young people extensive training about our product, enabling them to source and onboard customers on their own and receive a commission of the revenue generated by all the customers they bring on! This is a job opportunity that allows you to still maintain your relative independence as an affiliate and still bring in some money for your household.

“As an Independent CICOD Executive, you aren’t just another sales channel or representative for us as a firm. In actual fact, you become part of the larger CICOD team, working within a network of people dedicated to improving the output and efficiency of MSMEs. As we cultivate these affiliate partnerships, creating thousands of jobs amidst an unemployment crisis, we also provide the marketing, sales, and support services for the products you’re going out to sell.

However, it’s also good news for the SMEs that you will be bringing on board. Because of you, these SMEs will have access to the CICOD suite of tools helping them manage their businesses more efficiently, and effectively in this digital age! Everyone wins! What’s not to love?

Through its entry-free partnership, the organization also expressed it’s wishes to partner with Nigerians to resell its products to MSMEs and earn passive income by joining the CICOD team of Independent CICOD Executives today! “There’s no joining fee, and as long as you have a bank account and a referee, you’re good to go. Come and join the CICOD community,” it added.
