    NADDC backs made-in-Nigeria motorsport cars

The Director-General, National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Mr. Joseph Osanipin, has thrown his weight behind locally manufactured motorsport cars showcased at the just-concluded Lagos AutoFest 2025, describing the initiative as a boost to Nigeria’s automotive industry and job creation drive.

The three race cars – WP1, WP2 and WP3 – displayed at the event carried NADDC stickers and thrilled spectators with high-speed performances.

Designed and assembled in Nigeria, the vehicles drew wide attention for their Formula One-style racing display.

Lagos AutoFest 2025, a flagship automotive and entertainment event organised by Work and Play Promotions in collaboration with the BMW Club of Nigeria, transformed the Marina waterfront on Lagos Island into a motorsport arena.

The festival brought together over 100 car and bike enthusiasts and attracted thousands of spectators.

The event featured drag racing along Marina Road, Kakawa Street, Broad Street and Apongbon, looping back to Inner Marina, marking the seventh road edition of AutoFest.

Speaking on the sidelines, producer and promoter of Work and Play Motorsport, Mr. Adeoye Ojuoko, said the initiative was designed to promote Made-in-Nigeria vehicles and grow a sustainable motorsport culture.

“We have been producing motorsport cars since 2017. These cars are manufactured in Nigeria, with only the engines imported. Our goal is to showcase Nigerian engineering capacity, test what we build, and create employment through motorsport,” Ojuoko said.

He noted that local production significantly cuts costs and retains value within the Nigerian economy.

“If we import a Formula-style race car, it costs millions. Producing this locally costs about ₦20 million. That money stays in Nigeria, supports our factories and creates jobs,” he said.

Ojuoko urged NADDC to formally certify the vehicles and support efforts to scale production nationwide.

“We need NADDC to certify and promote these cars so they can be replicated across the country. To grow the automotive industry, we must build locally, test locally and race locally,” he added.

He also called for the establishment of an automotive and motorsport hub to enable more Nigerians to design, build and test race cars.

According to him, support from government institutions has been critical to the project’s growth.

“The backing we’ve received from the Lagos State Government and NADDC has been a game-changer. It’s not just symbolic; it is driving real growth. Today, we are fabricating race cars locally, something that seemed impossible a few years ago,” Ojuoko said.

AutoFest 2025 combined motorsport with culture and entertainment, featuring Made-in-Nigeria race cars, supercar and superbike displays, cultural showcases celebrating Lagos and Nigerian heritage, and live music performances.

No one is in doubt of her indelible footprints in global business, culture, and mentorship particularly in Nigeria and across Africa, where her contributions in sectors such as transportation, automobile, renewable energy, education, and public infrastructure are evident.

Indeed, from pioneering disruptive mobility solutions with LagRide E-Taxis, to advancing green and renewable energy through Lontor, and steering automotive innovation with GAC Motors, the impact of the Chairman of CIG Motors, Chief Diana Chen, cuts across sectors that power Nigeria and Africa’s future.

It was against this backdrop that industry leaders, comprising CEOs, bank Managing Directors, friends and business associates from diverse sectors took time off their busy schedules, during the week, to gather at Eko Hotel & Suites, Lagos, to pay tribute to a woman whose influence stretches across continents.

It was the birthday celebration of Chief Diana Chen, who also serves as Vice Chairman of the China-Africa Business Council, But the extraordinary event, tagged “An Afternoon with Diana Chen” transcended a mere celebration, unfolding as a series of profound dialogues that illuminated her remarkable journey as a global trailblazer and cultural architect.

The Chief Finance Officer (CFO) of CIG Motors, Dr. Ramanathan Murugesan, set the ball rolling when he remarked: “Diana Chen is not just a business leader; she’s an architect of cross-continental progress.”

The CFO added that as Vice Chairman of the China-Africa Business Council, “Chen has championed over $2 billion in investments into Africa, demonstrating that her leadership standard demands excellence and delivers profound impact, perpetually aspiring to make a difference rather than simply a living.”

Two thoughtfully curated panel sessions offered rare insights into the Diana Chen persona. The first, “Home Away from Home: The Journey of a Cultural Bridge,” anchored by the insightful Toyosi Etim-Effiong,

The session featured Chen alongside two close friends-turned-sisters: Mrs. Iyabo Soji-Okunsanya, Executive Director of Access Bank Corporate & Investment Banking, and Dr. Chinyere Almona, Director General of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).

The discussion illuminated Chief Chen’s unwavering positivity about Nigeria, her intentional approach to life, and her unique ability to foster a sense of being heard without imposing her thoughts, constantly exploring new horizons.

The panel celebrated her unique cultural journey, highlighting how embracing Nigeria has profoundly influenced her leadership and personal life, rooted in shared values and exciting prospects.

However, a deeply personal and moving highlight was the presence of students from Yaba College of Technology, who are direct beneficiaries of the Silk Road International Fellowship Program, a transformative initiative Chief Chen passionately supports, enabling them to study automobile engineering in China.

The students’ attendance powerfully underscored the life-changing opportunities her leadership creates for Africa’s next generation of innovators. As one student shared, “Thanks to Chief Diana’s vision and support, we have gained world-class skills that will shape our futures and the future of Africa’s automotive industry.”

In his closing remarks, the Executive Director of CIG Motors, Jubril Arogundade, shared: “Chief Diana has reminded us that power lies not just in titles or achievements, but in authenticity, resilience, and service to others.

  • AI will cut white-collar jobs by half, says Ford CEO

AI will cut white-collar jobs by half, says Ford CEO

Ford CEO Jim Farley has warned that the increasing embrace of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will axe half of white-collar jobs.

He has become the latest corporate boss to sound the alarm about AI’s impact on workers.

During the Aspen Ideas Festival, he highlighted the importance of the “essential economy”—which he defined as everything that gets moved, built or fixed—while saying blue-collar skilled trades have been neglected.

The U.S. spends too little on vocational training, which is also geared more toward 1950 than 2050, contributing to a decline in blue-collar productivity, Farley explained, though the carmaker has been investing in training.

Meanwhile, demand for skilled trades is expected to surge, and even the AI boom will require workers to build and service the facilities that provide all the computing capacity that’s needed.

There’s already a massive shortage of trade workers, he added, estimating a deficit of 600,000 in factories and nearly half a million in construction, for example.

“There’s more than one way to the American dream, but our whole education system is focused on four-year [college] education. Hiring an entry worker at a tech company has fallen 50% since 2019. Is that really where we want all of our kids to go? Artificial intelligence is gonna replace literally half of all white-collar workers in the U.S,” Farley said.

His AI warning marked that latest from a top CEO about AI’s impact on the labor force, especially on office workers.

Last month, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the company’s corporate workforce will shrink in the next few years due to AI.

“We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs. It’s hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company,” Jassy wrote in a memo to employee.

In addition, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei told Axios in May that AI could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs, sending the unemployment rate as high as 20per cent in the next five years. The latest employment report showed the jobless rate was at 4.1per cent in June.

There are already signs that AI is threatening the types of jobs that historically have served as stepping stones for young workers.

LinkedIn’s chief economic opportunity officer, Aneesh Raman, pointed out in May that AI tools are doing the types of simple coding and debugging tasks that junior software developers did to gain experience. AI is also doing work that young employees in the legal and retail sectors once did.

For his part, Ford’s CEO sought to draw attention to the opportunity in skilled trades, noting that more Americans are also considering trade school than a four-year college.

“We all sense that America can do better than we are doing. We need a new mindset, one that recognizes the success the importance of this essential economy and the importance to our vibrancy and sustainability as a country,” Farley had said.

…Dr. Chris Umeh hailed for driving innovation, job creation, and bilateral trade

JP Chris Motors Nigeria Ltd, under the leadership of Dr. Chris Umeh, is making bold strides in redefining Nigeria’s automobile and energy sectors, emerging as one of the most innovative players in Africa’s industrial landscape.

With headquarters in Japan and a growing presence in Lagos, JP Motors has become a formidable force in the African auto market. The company distinguishes itself by integrating manufacturing, vehicle assembly, and local content development—breaking away from the import-only model that dominates the sector.

Dr. Umeh, who also serves as President of CSU International Co. Ltd Japan, has spent nearly two decades steering the company’s global operations. From factories in Japan to assembly plants in Nigeria, his business model focuses on sustainability, quality, and job creation.

JP Chris Motors’ operations span several key sectors: production of Hiace-style buses, tricycles (Keke), locally manufactured batteries, energy storage systems, as well as shipping and clearing logistics. These services are built not just to serve transportation needs, but also to support economic growth across West Africa.

The company’s transport division, known for assembling durable and reliable shuttle buses and tricycles, has gained significant traction in Nigeria’s commercial transport sector. Its vehicles are widely used by commuters in cities like Lagos, Anambra, and Abuja, filling a critical gap left by larger automakers.

One of its standout innovations is the JP battery brand, which is rapidly gaining recognition as one of Africa’s most reliable energy solutions. Designed for the continent’s harsh climate conditions, the batteries come with a three-to-five-year warranty and are praised for their longevity, affordability, and performance.

Dr. Umeh’s vision goes beyond vehicle production. Through CSU International and partnerships in countries like Vietnam, the company is also investing in renewable energy infrastructure and deepening Nigeria-Asia business relations. These efforts are aimed at reducing foreign technology dependence and building indigenous capacity in energy storage and power systems.

With an estimated 10,000 direct and indirect jobs created across Nigeria and Japan, JP Motors and its parent company have proven resilient despite Nigeria’s harsh economic climate and frequent policy changes—conditions that have forced many foreign investors to pull out.

Beyond his business acumen, Dr. Chris Umeh holds the traditional title of Eze-Igbo na Japan. Widely respected as “Igwe Ara N’azu Nwa” and “Igwe Dike Ana-agabara Izu n’ Japan,” he is known for his philanthropy, cultural advocacy, and youth empowerment initiatives. His leadership blends traditional values with modern entrepreneurship.

As Nigeria pushes for industrial self-reliance, JP Chris Motors stands at the forefront of this transformation—leading not with noise, but with results.
