Tinubu stated that there is a need for ride-hailing platforms such as inDrive to devise further means of ensuring the safety of its drivers or passengers.

While admitting that the safety services in Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) scheme were different from those of the e-hailing platform, he urged e-hailing platforms such as inDrive to take their cue from the BRT system by deploying monitoring and emergency communication practices using appropriate technology.

Chairman of the Amalgamated Union of Application-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), Lagos Chapter, Comrade Jaiyesimi Azeez, stated that while inDrive needs to continue setting the example in their pricing and commission structures, there is still room for drivers to earn better.

This, he said, would benefit both drivers and passengers amid the difficult economic conditions.

Azeez said plans are underway to engage with all the e-hailing platforms to ensure a win-win situation for all stakeholders.

Director of Public Transport and Commuter Services at the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Olusoji Adebayo, commended e-hailing platforms for their transformative role in the transport sector.

He encouraged inDrive to act on driver and user feedback to improve their services.

While acknowledging the challenges faced by drivers on the e-hailing platform, Adebayo stated the Ministry of Transportation’s commitment to ensuring the safety, security, sanity and standard of transport operations in Lagos State.

He stressed the need for drivers on the InDrive Platform to get accredited at the PTCS, have their vehicles inspected by the VIS, and get re-certified by LASDRI, in line with the government’s safety requirements for public transport operators.

At an event with the drivers and various affiliated unions in attendance, five top-performing drivers on the platform were recognized and rewarded with an iPhone each.

According to Oladimeji, this gesture is in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the platform’s success.

  • Ferrari accepts cryptocurrency for luxury cars

Ferrari accepts cryptocurrency for luxury cars

Ferrari has started to accept payment in cryptocurrency for its luxury sports cars in the United States and will extend the scheme to Europe following requests from its wealthy customers, its Marketing and Commercial chief, Enrico Gallieratold Reuters.

Last year, the Italian company sold 13,200 cars, with prices starting at over 200,000 euros or $211,000 and going up to two million euros. Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) is Ferrari’s largest region, accounting for 46 per cent of its total car shipments in the first half of this year.

The majority of blue-chip companies have steered clear of crypto as the volatility of bitcoin and other tokens renders them impractical for commerce. Patchy regulation and high energy usage have also prevented the spread of crypto as a means of payment.

These include electric carmaker Tesla, which in 2021 began to accept payment in bitcoin, the biggest crypto coin, before CEO Elon Musk halted it because of environmental concerns.

Galliera said cryptocurrencies had made efforts to reduce their carbon footprint through the introduction of new software and a larger use of renewable sources.

“Our target to reach for carbon neutrality by 2030 along our whole value chain is absolutely confirmed,” he said in an interview.

Ferrari said the decision came in response to requests from the market and dealers as many of its clients have invested in crypto.

“Some are young investors who have built their fortunes around cryptocurrencies,” he said. “Some others are more traditional investors, who want to diversify their portfolios.”

While some cryptocurrencies, such as the second-largest, ether , have improved their energy efficiency, bitcoin still attracts criticism for its energy-intensive mining.

Ferrari shipped more than 1,800 cars to its Americas region, which includes the U.S., in the first half of this year.

Galliera did not say how many cars Ferrari expected to sell through crypto. He said the company’s order portfolio was strong and fully booked well into 2025, but the company wanted to test this expanding universe.

“This will help us connect to people who are not necessarily our clients but might afford a Ferrari,” he said.

”Interest is the same in the U.S. and Europe, we don’t see huge differences,” Galliera said.

Countries where cryptocurrencies are restricted include China.

Ferrari has turned to one of the biggest cryptocurrency payment processors, BitPay, for the initial phase in the U.S., and will allow transactions in bitcoin, ether and USDC, one of the largest so-called stablecoins. Ferrari might use other payment processors in different regions.

“Prices will not change, no fees, no surcharges if you pay through cryptocurrencies,” Galliera said.

Bitpay will immediately turn cryptocurrency payments into traditional currency on behalf of Ferrari’s dealers, so they are protected from price swings.

“This was one of our main goals: avoiding, both our dealers and us, to directly handle cryptocurrencies and being shielded from their wide fluctuations,” Galliera said.

As the payment processor, BitPay will ensure that the virtual currencies come from legitimate sources and not derived from criminal activity or to be used to launder the proceeds of crime or evade tax.

Ferrari’s marketing and commercial chief said that the majority of its U.S. dealers have already signed up, or are about to agree, to the scheme

“I am confident others will join soon,” Galliera said.

  • EVs edge out diesels in Europe

EVs edge out diesels in Europe

Diesel cars have been popular in Europe for decades, where gasoline prices have traditionally been rather high compared to many other regions. Finding a small and inexpensive hatch in Europe that isn’t diesel has been a tall order for some time, and the same went for large sedans, especially in the United Kingdom. Even the Volkswagen diesel crisis that affected a number of brands had scarcely tempered the car buying public’s appetite for diesels in some individual markets.

But for the first time ever, sales of new battery-electric models in the European Union have edged out those of diesel models, with June 2023 data showing 15.1 per cent market share for BEVs, according to data published by Europe’s auto manufacturer association ACEA. That’s a gain of 66.2 per cent compared to the same month in 2022, when BEVs commanded 10.7 per cent of the market in the EU.

Still, the growth for BEVs has not been achieved equally across all the EU countries, with the Netherlands seeing a 90.1 per cent gain, with Germany and France in second and third places with 64.4 per cent and 52.0 per cent gains, respectively.

Overall, gas-engined models in Europe still lead the pack with 36.3 per cent market share, while hybrids are in second place with 24.3 per cent of the market.

Read Also; ECOWAS ‘boots’ on Nigerien ground

Another trend worth noting is that plug-in hybrids in some individual EU markets have actually declined over the past year, by as much as 39.2 per cent in Germany. Elsewhere PHEVs have seen dramatic gains, such as in Spain, where their market share has grown by 51.7 per cent.

But is this solely a reflection of battery-electric models’ popularity, or more a consequence of the regulatory war against diesels?

In the past few years a number of large cities in Europe have experimented with bans on diesel models, keeping them out of city centers, ahead of a union-wide target for zero-emission car sales by 2035, adopted by the European Parliament earlier this year. Also hindering demand for diesel was Volkswagen’s own crisis, now nearly a decade old, that also affected brands such as Audi, Skoda, and SEAT.

For one thing, despite an overall decline diesels have actually gained traction in some standalone countries such as Romania, where they saw a 22.4 per cent gain last month, as well as Germany. We wouldn’t doubt diesel’s ongoing popularity in a number of smaller Eastern European markets either, whether inside or outside the EU.

When it comes to BEVs, another curious dynamic worth noting is that a number of popular electric models aren’t even produced by European automakers. Tesla’s Model Y has been the overall best seller in any category in the first six months of 2023, easily dominating the BEV market, and a number of Chinese-made EVs are currently on sale as well. Neither trend is something that many market analysts had seen coming just a few years ago.
