  • ‘Self-driving cars won’t stop road mishaps’

‘Self-driving cars won’t stop road mishaps’

Each year about 33,000 people in the United States (U.S) die in a car accident. Around the world, that number shoots up to about 1.2 million people.

Overwhelmingly, the vast majority of these accidents are preventable. The problem, in large part, is human error.

Technology companies and automakers alike are trying to end these unnecessary deaths with self-driving cars. The bet is autonomous vehicles decked with sensors and cameras simply have more data about the car’s environment than humans, therefore, the computer can more quickly respond to potential dangers.

But while all the major car companies are investing in this technology, the fact remains that there are a number of hurdles to be addressed before fully autonomous cars can hit the streets in any meaningful way in the U.S.

Most automakers and industry experts estimate these vehicles will be on the road closer to 2030. However, technology does already exist that can make cars a lot safer.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 80 per cent of all accidents occur because of some kind of distraction that happens three seconds before an incident.

To help prevent these kinds of accidents, you don’t need a fully autonomous vehicle, you just need better safety technology, Michael Backman, a general manager at Mobileye, a tech company that makes the software and tech that enables advanced safety systems, told Tech Insider.

“It’s amazing when you think about it that we allow people to perish at this rate in this country and also around the whole world. It’s terrible that this happens and we have the technology to change that right now,” Backman said.

Instead of waiting years for the regulations and technology to be fully developed for fully autonomous vehicles, automakers should already be implementing semi-autonomous systems that help make vehicles safer now.

By 2020, almost every major car company plans to have a vehicle with self-driving features— like autonomous driving for the highway, self-braking, and self-parking—available for sale.

In fact, in September, 10 major car companies — including Audi, BMW, Ford, General Motors, and Tesla — agreed to make automatic braking a standard feature in their vehicles. This kind of safety technology could help prevent or cut as many as 1,700 deaths caused by rear-end collisions each year.

BMW’s all-electric i3 can already park itself and Tesla recently rolled out its latest autopilot features, which enables highway autosteer and parallel autopark, as part of a beta program.

But new cars aren’t the only vehicles getting safer. Consumers and companies are also beginning to retrofit their dumb cars with smart car tech that helps them avoid accidents.

Mobileye, which provides its technology to auto suppliers and manufacturers, powers 85% of cars with collision avoidance or some kind of driving assistance systems, Backman said. The company’s software communicates with sensors and cameras placed on a car to help warn drivers of possible hazards and to power self-driving functions.

Tesla, General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Audi, and BMW are just a few of the companies that use the company’s technology.

MobileyeYouTube/MobileyeMobileye’s technology uses a camera-based system to sense what is around it.

But Mobileye has another part of its business that uses its technology to basically make dumb cars a lot safer. The product, called Mobileye 5 Series, is a camera-based computer system that attaches to the dashboard to alert the driver to all kinds of hazards.

For example, the camera in the system can read speed limits, so it will alert the driver by beeping when they are speeding. It will do the same if the driver is veering out of their lane, tailgating, or if it detects that the vehicle might be on a collision course with a pedestrian or another object.

The system begins its warning sound up to about three seconds before it detects a potential threat.

While the system is available to consumers, companies have adopted the product in a big way for their company fleets because it saves them money.

“If a company wants to introduce safety technology into their fleet, they have to wait 15 years to buy all new trucks, so the idea of retrofitting vehicles with this device is very attractive,” Backman said.

The technology also helps reduce accidents, which means less insurance claims for companies to pay out, Backman said.

“What we see is very shortly after these are installed in fleets, everyone starts driving safer and then what happens very quickly after that is the accident rate gets reduced,” he said. “Their chargeable accidents go down by 50 per cent and their accidents across the whole board go down by 25 per cent.”

While Mobileye is betting on self-driving cars in the long-term, advanced driving automobile systems in cars like semi-autonomous functions will be the thing that saves the most lives in the interim, Backman said.

“This is just one example of technology that will one day be ubiquitous and every car will have it. But we are at the early stage adoption. We are at the early edge of widespread adoption, but it’s inevitable because the facts are there,” Backman said.

  • Tata Motors-owned JLR to invest $2b in Slovakia

Tata Motors’ Jaguar Land Rover will invest $2 billion to build a plant in Slovak Republic which will help create over 50,000 jobs, European nation’s economy minister Vazil Hudak said.

“We are happy to inform you all that the first Indian company to invest in Slovak Republic is Tata’s JLR. They will invest $2 billion in the first phase,” Hudak was quoted as telling a industry meet at the weekend.

He was speaking at an interactive meet organised at the World Trade Centre by the All India Association of Industries (AIAI), which issued a statement.

Hudak said this will generate 400 direct jobs at the plant and another 50,000 supplementary jobs in allied sectors.

The minister, who met Tata Sons Chairman Cyrus Mistry after the meeting, said this is the best time to invest in the country, and mentioned political safety and a robust economy as its strengths.

In August, JLR signed a letter of intent for the potential new plant in the city of Nitra in western Slovakia, according to the company website.

Speculation is rife on the quantum of investments in the plant, with some media reports pegging it at GBP 1 billion.

The company is doing a “feasibility study” with the Slovakian government to explore plans for a factory with an installed capacity of up to 3,00,000 vehicles over the next decade, it said, adding, the plant will manufacture aluminium Jaguar Land Rover vehicles and start production in 2018.

“The move marks the next step in the company’s strategy to become a more competitive global business by expanding its manufacturing operations into new international locations in the future,” it said.

Hudak is leading a delegation seeking Indian investments from the engineering, information technology and automobile components, and also looking for partners to start ventures in automobile, defence, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and renewable energy space, the AIAI statement said

  • BMW goes all out with 2016 M4 GTS

BMW goes all out with 2016 M4 GTS

BMW has unveiled its special edition BMW M4 GTS and loaded the car with appealing styling and high performance upgrades.

“We’ve taken a radical route with the set-up of the BMW M4 GTS to create a sports machine for the race track that delivers top-end dynamics and inspirational performance,” said Frank van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH, in a press release. “It allows us to demonstrate what is possible today with a road-legal car.”

What separates the M4 GTS from the basic model is its water injection system which allows to car to reach higher speeds.

The M4 GTS marks the first time the water injection system has been used in a road car, according to BMW. The system works by creating a mist that is injected into the intake manifold where it evaporates, cooling the engine which in turns reduces the final compression pressure.

This cooling system improves the performance turbo chargers which allows for the engine to crank out 493 horsepower, taking the car from 0 to 60 in 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 149 miles per hour.

The German automaker also cut 200 pounds by using aluminum and carbon fiber throughout the construction allowing for faster speeds.

  • Bad roads: Luxury bus owners seek Fed Govt’s intervention

The  Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria (ALBON) has bemoaned the deplorable state of highways, saying they contribute to the high rate of accidents in parts of the country.

At a meeting in Lagos, members of the group expressed deep concern over the worsening condition of the various roads their vehicles ply, appealing to the Federal Government to save the users from the situation.

In a statement, ALBON Chairman, Sir Dan Okemuo, hailed President Muhammadu Buhari, for the improvement in power supply across the country “and for the restoration of confidence in the business environment in Nigeria”.

Lamenting the heavy toll of bad roads in terms of endangering the lives of users, maintenance costs, and lost man-hours, the association said the President’s quick remedial measures have become necessary.

“The numerous challenges faced by its members, including prohibitive costs of maintaining the vehicles frequently damaged on the bad roads, result in many transporters dropping out of the business while new investors are scared of coming in,” Okemuo said.

They identified specific roads across the country that are in dire need of rehabilitation, including: Lussada to Igbesa Free Trade Zone, Ogun State; Omotosho to Ijebu Ode (Ondo and Ogun states); Agbara to Atan Road (Ogun); Papalanato to Shagamu (Ogun); Ubiaja, Uromi (Edo) leading to Abuja; and Oyigbo road connecting Aba-Port Harcourt.

Others are Ikot-Ekpene-Itu-Udukpani-Uyo-Calabar; Ikwuano to Ikot-Ekpene road connecting Abia and Akwa Ibom states; Umuapu, Ohaji road connecting Owerri-Port Harcourt; Umagwu in Imo State connecting Ihiala in Anambra State; and Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, among others.

ALBON said they were concerned that accidents “with consequent high fatalities” will continue if the roads are not fixed.

Quoting reports, which said the economy loses about N10 billion daily and N1.825 trillion yearly to the terrible conditions of roads nationwide, the association argued that the losses would have been avoided if the roads were in good shape. The money saved, according to them, will have been channelled into other areas of need in the economy.

The group said: “There is no doubt that a good network of roads is a precondition for economic growth, apart from being a necessity for agricultural and industrial development. Nigeria is reputed to be Africa’s fastest growing economy, but much of its success in economic terms will to a great extent depend on how well it can manage its various transportation problems the population continues to grow.

“We hereby restate that since much of the nation’s economic growth will be dependent on non-oil sector and services-oriented industry in the coming years, given the falling global oil prices, the Federal Government has to intervene immediately in salvaging the road conditions nationwide, so as to facilitate the desired economic growth.

“It is lamentable that Nigeria is not only losing money that is needed for the economic growth, but also losing the available human resource required to sustain the expected growth being projected at five percent.”

  • Mercedes-Benz dazzles in Frankfurt Motor Show

Mercedes-Benz dazzles in Frankfurt Motor Show

Mercedes-Benz has again put up a spectacular display at the famous International Motor show, popularly known as the IAA (International Automobile Ausstellung). The show, which usually holds in Frankfurt, Germany for passenger cars, is a tremendous success, writes TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO

While brands from all over the world were adequately represented, showcasing new and improved models, Mercedes-Benz took no prisoners in its impressive and innovative display of its “Dream Cars Collection” which were featured in no less than three world premiers, along with a number of motor show premiers.

The Mercedes-Benz’ theme was ‘Digitalisation’ and focused in particular on ‘Speed’. This is evident in the Mercedes-Benz show car “Concept IAA- Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile.”

According to Dr Dieter Zetsche, the Chairman, Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz cars, at the Mercedes-Benz and Smart press conference, the show car is the first transformer from Mercedes-Benz away from the movie screen. The Concept IAA is a four-door coupe which, not only embodies two cars in one, but also irresistible design elements which switches automatically to aerodynamic mode when the vehicle reaches a speed of 80km/h whilst numerous aerodynamic measures alter the shape of the vehicle. It offers new touch-based functions, the design of the S-Class and S-Class Coupe is maintained, and definitely predicts what the interior of the business saloon might look like in the not so far future.

There was also a double feature from Mercedes-Benz and AMG. After Ola Kallenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler, Mercedes-Benz Sales described them as ‘a representation of pure lust for life’, he explained that, evident in the two SUV coupes- the GLE Coupe and the forthcoming GLC coupe, Mercedes-Benz is delivering the perfect mix of power and elegance.

With the C-Class Coupe, the fascination begins with its revolutionary design. The C-Class Coupe boasts lightweight construction, excellent aerodynamics, and efficient engines thereby producing high performance.

The AMG C 63 Coupe, on the other hand, is the sportiest C-Class ever with far reaching technical modifications, while the driving performance is taken to new heights.

The beat of the production coupe is more “Drum and Bass,” while the look of the AMG is clearly “Rock ‘n’ Roll. However, both variants drive as amazingly as they look. There are also more convenient functions, and double performance is certain. This dream car is set to arrive at showrooms sometime in 2016, and the Mercedes-Benz version of the C-Class Coupe will arrive about four weeks earlier.

More cars on display were the new Mercedes-Benz GLC, the new generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the Mercedes-AMG A 45 4MATIC and the Mercedes-Benz V-Class AMG line.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLC has the outstanding characteristic safety high-tech assistance systems and energy efficiency and performs impressively in all operating conditions. Showing how its vehicles can be individualised to exceptionally high standards, products from Mercedes-Benz Accessories GmbH on GLC 250 d 4MATIC model were exhibited.

For the new generation Mercedes-Benz A- Class, the range of available engines has been increased, and the conflicting aims of sporty performance and enhanced comfort have been reconciled.

With revised gear ratios, aerodynamic fine-tuning and the new dynamic select driving modes which raise the overall performance to a higher level, the Mercedes AMG A 45 4MATIC entry-level model is the most powerful compact sports model in the world.

The line of Mercedes-Benz V-Class AMG was another awesome display. It has new additional comfort features e.g. the largest panoramic roof in the mid-size van category. It clearly expresses the unique and evolutionary design of the Mercedes-Benz MPV.

More interestingly, Dr Zetsche explained the expansion of the S-Class to six more models following the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet. The new Cabriolet is the first open-top luxury four-seater from Mercedes-Benz since 1971. Offering a sensual and exclusive design with the S-Class cutting-edge technology, it embodies a comprehensive warmth and wind protection concept which includes intelligent control for convertibles.

In addition, Mercedes-Benz introduced a first in its history, a luxury convertible in the Mercedes-Benz model range. The Mercedes-Benz-AMG S 63 features AMG performance 63 4MATIC all-wheel drive with rear-based torque split as standard, among others, making it the ultimate dream car.

The new Smart Fortwo and Smart Forfour were not left out in the presentation, as DR Annette Winkler, Head of Smart revealed more about the fresh features. These include; the new combination of turbo engine and dual-clutch transmission, and a “wonderfully” smooth gearshift. Also introduced was the new eye-catching and extremely spacious convertible. “… this new Smart is the most affordable convertible in the world,” Dr Winkler affirms.

‘The new Mercedes-Benz GLC has the outstanding characteristic safety high-tech assistance systems and energy efficiency and performs impressively in all operating conditions’

Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, Group Research and Mercedes-Benz cars Development, Dr Thomas Weber also spoke at the Press conference. According to him, “Every IAA motivates our sector to new superlatives… while others talk about new ideas for the luxury class, we have actually delivered. We want to offer our customers, not only the best car, but also the one that is the best match for him or her.” Talking on what the S-Class variants which are in the market have in common, he mentioned: first class comfort and safety, plus a stunning appearance. Noting that while the S-500 stands for exceptional efficiency, the AMG S 63 Coupe stands for a combination of luxury and performance, the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 embodies the classic S-Class attributes in their most exclusive form.

Rounding off his speech, Dr Zetsche said “…digitalisation does not just accelerate our processes for show cars; it does the same for our production vehicles too. We are digitalising our entire value chain- from R & D, through production to sales, and it is paying off.  Mercedes-Benz continues to break records… and we are growing profitably. The most important reason for that is; our line-up is more fascinating and more diverse than ever, and our product offensive continues.”

Hosting its various markets from around the globe, including Weststar Associates Ltd, the Authorised Distributor of Mercedes-Benz in Nigeria, Mercedes-Benz ensured the experience was an interesting and exciting one. The level of organisation and preparedness was remarkable, making the events memorable.

  • Dangers of driving against traffic

    Dangers of driving against traffic

Over the years, lots of men and women, young and old have been killed or maimed by vehicles moving against the traffic.

This offence of driving against the traffic is more common when there is heavy traffic on one lane thereby prompting the impatient and disobedient drivers or riders to illegally divert to the lane of oncoming vehicles.

Having seen the meaning of and cause of this offence, let us examine the psychology and consequences of the offence.

When a person is following a routine overtime, it will be registered in his or her subconscious mind thereby making it possible for him or her to perform that same task without giving much thought to it. For example, if a person has been moving around in a house for a while, he or she can move to several parts of the house even in the dark without stumbling because every nook and cranny of the house is already registered in his subconscious mind.

In the same vein, when a road user’s mind is already made up about the direction of the traffic flow, he may not quickly think that a driver or rider can drive or ride against the traffic even though he knows that there are mad drivers and riders in the Country. This is the reason why many people have fallen victim of vehicles moving against the traffic.

Driving against the traffic can result in the following:

    1. Crashes with oncoming vehicles who might not be expecting vehicles to drive against the traffic.
    2. Confusion for other road users who are scrambling to avoid having collision with the vehicles driving against the traffic.
    3. Crushing of pedestrians who have gotten used to looking at only are traffic direction before crossing the road and those backing the traffic without expecting vehicles to be coming from behind. It is worthy of note that most of the vehicles that drive against the traffic are usually furious and reckless in their driving mainly because they know that they are wrong thereby rushing to avoid being arrested by the law enforcement agents. Most of such wicked drivers are also guilty of hit and run.

It is very disheartening that VIPs, Police officers,  and other security officers are also guilty of this terrible offence. Unless there is official diversion because of on-going road construction, maintenance or obstruction, no man or woman irrespective of the status should drive against the traffic.

It is a form of traffic madness and this is one of the reasons the Lagos State Government in its traffic laws prescribed a psychiatry test for anyone that commits this offence of driving against the traffic in addition to paying the stipulated fine.

I hereby recommend that the Federal Government through the Federal Road Safety Commission and the State Governments through their Traffic Management Agencies must stand firmly against this offence and take every possible step to prevent it through enforcement with appropriate penalties.  Anyone that cause accident or kills as a result of driving against the traffic should be prosecuted and jailed.

Where compromise is established between the driver and the vehicle occupants is established, they should also be prosecuted with the driver or rider as the case may be.

Members of the public should also commence the act of shouting at the offenders and snapping their vehicles with the number plates for direct reporting to the appropriate traffic management authorities and for posting on the social media as a way of curbing this destructive driving attitude which is currently pervading every part of the country no matter whose ass is gored.

It is a shameful thing that Nigerian is still one of the countries with the highest rate road traffic crashes and fatalities in the committee of nations. It has therefore become expedient that every possible step, no matter how crude to be taken to drastically stem this very sad tide. A stitch in time saves nine.

  • Hyundai marks three million Middle East sales

Hyundai Motor Company is celebrating the sale of its three millionth vehicles in the Middle East, 39 years after it began operations in the region.

Its officials gathered at the Ulsan Plant in Korea to mark the occasion and thank customers.

The company is offering a new 5 year/100,000km warranty across all models.

Firmly established as the second biggest automotive manufacturer across the region, Hyundai arrived in the Middle East 1976. Almost four decades on, the brand has enjoyed success right across the region. And now customers purchasing Hyundai models can take advantage of a new five years/100,000km warranty package, making the decision to purchase a Hyundai even easier.

In terms of bestselling markets, Saudi Arabia has taken pole position for Hyundai, benefiting from the brand’s approach of working with three different distributor partners across the Kingdom. This was followed by Jordan which is one of the Middle East’s leading markets in terms of sales volume. Not far behind is the UAE and Oman which also prove to be important markets for the manufacturer.

Highlighting the popularity of the brand’s diverse product offering, Hyundai can point to a compact car, a mid-size sedan and a compact SUV as its best-sellers across the decades. Having sold over 667,000 units to date, the Elantra is by far the company’s most popular Middle East model. The Sonata, which saw its seventh generation version launched in the region just last year, has recorded sales of over 321,000, while the Tucson took the honours in third place with sales exceeding 242,000 units.

Commenting on this milestone, Jin (James) Kim, Vice-President and Head of Hyundai Africa and Middle East, said:  “Meeting the three million vehicle mark is testament to the strength of our brand, and the quality and value offered across our wide model range. By purchasing our vehicles in ever increasing numbers, nothing highlights more powerfully the confidence that our customers have in us and our products.’’

“This success is also down to the continued support of our distributor partners, who have invested in developing unrivalled facilities and unrivalled customer service offerings and this new warranty is the perfect example of the type of unbeatable offers which are available in the region.”

Established in 1967 in Korea, Hyundai Motor Company began operations in the Middle East just nine years later, since then it has gone from strength to strength. Key milestones include the manufacturer reaching the cumulative one million sales mark in the region in 2005 and the two million sales mark in 2012. It also broke the 300,000 barrier for annual sales for the first time in the same year, something it went on to repeat in 2013 and 2014.

In the first half of 2015 alone, the Korean brand has sold 168,878 vehicles in the region, representing a strong year-on-year increase in sales. With several key model launches coming out later this year, including the All-New Tucson, the All-New Sonata Hybrid and the Creta, a completely new compact SUV, the manufacturer is well set to continue the success of the past 39 years.

  • Mercedes-Benz Concept IAA: Frankfurt motor show concept previews future Mercedes

Mercedes-Benz Concept IAA: Frankfurt motor show concept previews future Mercedes

The Frankfurt motor show is also known as the ‘IAA’ (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung, since you asked), so it was about time someone did a car with the same name.

That someone, perhaps inevitably, is Mercedes-Benz. And in the case of its latest concept, IAA stands for Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile.

It justifies both those elements to its name with a body that extends at higer speeds. Normally, it’s 5040mm  long – but above 50mph the rear body extends to a total length of 5430mm.

This helps it slip through the air with a Cd of just 0.19, aided by movable elements in the grille and front bumper which aid airflow around the arches and beneath the car.

Toss in a 275bhp plug-in hybrid powertrain and you’ve got a car which can surge past that 50mph mark with ease – as well as achieving up to 191.6mpg at the pumps.

But the IAA is not just a futuristic concept car. Its styling has more than a touch of the four-door coupe to it – and indeed it’s the broadest hint yet at what the next CLS will look like.

The IAA’s interior also previews the sort of cabin treatment you can expect when the CLS and next E-Class hit the streets. The concept has a 100mm longer wheelbase than the current version of those two, suggesting that Mercedes is working towards a major increase in passenger space.

“It shows, in a host of details, what our customers can look forward to in future production models,” confirmed Mercedes’ marketing boss Ola Källenius. All will be revealed as the Mark III CLS moves towards production in 2017.

  • ‘Volkswagen rigged tests on 2.81m cars in Germany’

Volkswagen rigged emission tests on about 2.8 million diesel vehicles in Germany, the country’s transport minister said, nearly six times as many as it has admitted to falsifying in the United States.

His comments, pointing to cheating on a bigger scale than previously thought, deepened the crisis at the world’s largest automaker as its supervisory board held a crucial meeting.

The board has named Matthias Mueller, the head of its Porsche sports-car division, as chief executive to  replace Martin Winterkorn, who quit on Wednesday, and at least four senior executives are expected to be purged.

Shares in the German company, which had started to steady after sharp falls earlier this week, were down 4.5 percent at 1335 GMT after Bloomberg also reported that executives in Germany controlled aspects of the manipulated U.S. tests, citing three people familiar with the U.S. business.

Volkswagen is under heavy pressure to show it can get to grips with the biggest business-related scandal in its 78-year history.

Mueller, 62, would represent part of the fresh start that Winterkorn said was needed when he stepped down.

The board will also dismiss the head of its U.S. business, the top engineers of its luxury Audi and Porsche brands and the head of brand development at its VW division, sources added, aiming to show it is acting decisively to end the crisis.

Volkswagen shares have plunged as much as 40 percent, wiping tens of billions of euros off its market value, since U.S. regulators said last Friday it had admitted to programming diesel cars to detect when they were being tested and alter the running of their engines to conceal their true emissions.

The scandal keeps growing. German transport minister Alexander Dobrindt said on Thursday Volkswagen had also cheated tests in Europe, where its sales are much higher, and on Friday put the number of affected vehicles in Germany at 2.8 million.

Regulators and prosecutors across the world are investigating the scandal.

The wider car market has been rocked, with manufacturers fearing a drop in sales of diesel cars and tighter regulations, while customers and motor dealers are furious that Volkswagen has yet to say whether it will have to recall any cars.

“VW needs to be very open about what has happened, how it was possible that this could happen to make sure that this never happens again in the future,” said a leading Volkswagen shareholder, underlining the importance of the board meeting.

“These are priorities that should override all other considerations at the moment.”

The task facing Mueller, if his selection is confirmed, is huge. The company said on Tuesday 11 million vehicles worldwide were fitted with the software that allowed it to cheat U.S. tests, while adding it was not turned on in the bulk of them.

Analysts hope that on Friday it may at last say which models and construction years are affected, and whether cars will need to be refitted.

They also expect it to announce a full investigation of the scandal, with German newspaper Handelsblatt saying it planned to hire U.S. law firm Jones Day to lead a no holds barred inquiry, and to give the outlines of a new management structure likely to be less centralized, but with a clearer system of checks.

Volkswagen has long been seen as a symbol of German industrial prowess and the auto industry is one of the country’s major employers and a key source of export revenue.

Earlier this month, Volkswagen delivered a presentation to investors at the annual Frankfurt motor show entitled “Stability in Volatile Times”. Now Chancellor Angela Merkel is urging it to act quickly to restore confidence in the Volkswagen name.

Frank Schellenberg, a taxi driver in Wolfsburg where the carmaker employs around 70,000 people, said locals felt betrayed and feared the worst.

“They have lost any contact with the real world, the customers who have been buying their cars in good faith,” he said, pointing to the firm’s 13-storey administrative building. “Everyone in Wolfsburg is expecting tough times and job cuts.”

Half a dozen Greenpeace protesters were outside Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg plant on Friday,  waving banners saying “No more lies!” in front of three diesel-engine VW Golf hatchbacks.

Evercore ISI analyst Arndt Ellinghorst said he would welcome the appointment of Mueller, a former head of product strategy and close to the Piech-Porsche family that controls Volkswagen.

But Bernstein’s Max Warburton questioned whether a man who has spent more than three decades at the company was the right man to signal a break with the past. He favors Herbert Diess, a former research and development chief of rival BMW who was hired to run the VW brand in December.

“VW needs to think big and bold,” Warburton said, urging the new CEO to offer to buy back and scrap almost 500,000 diesel cars sold in the United States, which would cost about $6 billion, as well as suspend the 100 engineers most closely associated with the affected engines and software.

Another top Volkswagen shareholder said it would have been better for Winterkorn to sort out the crisis before handing over to a successor, pointing to how oil company BP managed its recovery from the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

“I would have preferred Winterkorn to have stuck around for another month or so, through the worst of the storm, then the company appoint another CEO.”

Environmentalists have long complained that carmakers game the vehicle testing regime to exaggerate the fuel-efficiency and emissions readings of their vehicles.

The International Council on Clean Transportation, one of the research groups that helped uncover Volkswagen’s deception, has published new data showing carbon dioxide emissions in European road tests were on average 40 percent higher than the laboratory results advertised in car sales literature.
