  • Odyssey Ranger for competition

Organisers of the Ranger Odyssey Competition that kicked off last Thursday have announced a brand new Ranger Odyssey as the main prize for the winner.

Tagged Adventure of a Lifetime, the 20 contestants from South Africa, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Angola and Mozambique will travel through remote northwest Namibia for a ‘Spectacular 12-day adventure.’

Daily evaluations and scoring would determine the winner of Ranger Odyssey 2015, the organisers said.

Aside the coveted prize, winner will enjoy a year plus ZAR5 000 worth of fuel per month.

“It’s an opportunity to experience the splendour of some of Africa’s most remote and challenging destinations in the ‘Built Ford Tough’ Ranger – and with the allure of potentially winning an Odyssey Ranger for a year,  plus an equivalent in local currency of  ZAR5 000 worth of fuel per month,” said the organiser.

The top contestants were chosen from thousands of entries – and narrowed down to the final 20 at Boot Camp in June – the finalists will experience some of the Namib Desert’s most remarkable destinations over the ensuing 12 days.

The challenging route includes extreme off-road driving through the mountainous Khuwarib region, experiencing the breathtaking Purros canyons, tackling the desolate Gainas Plains, visiting the UNESCO heritage site at Palmwag, travelling through the aptly named Desolation Valley and traversing the steep 2 500-m high Brandberg by foot.

While many of the challenges will be taken on behind the wheel of the mighty Ford Ranger, the adventure is a test of brains and brawn. Apart from testing each contestant’s driving and vehicle-related skills, every individual will have to prove that they are tough enough to be crowned the winner.

They will be assessed by a panel of judges on their mental and physical endurance, as well as on a variety of other aspects such as communication skills, leadership abilities, camp craft and overall demeanour.

In a new twist for this year’s event, the trip will end prematurely for the lowest-scoring contestants, as two people will be eliminated from the competition at the end of day four and a further four contestants will leave after day eight (July 30).

However, the rankings for the highest-placed contestants will remain hidden and placed randomly on the chart, adding a further element of intrigue to the competition.

The winner of Ranger Odyssey 2015 will ultimately be revealed at a Ford event in Sandton on 11 August.

  • Mercedes-Benz C-Class sales hit 2.4m

    Mercedes-Benz C-Class sales hit 2.4m

Sales of the preceding model of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class that was launched globally in 2007, have hit a total of over 2.4 million. It is, therefore, no news that the Mercedes-Benz C-Class delivers impressive driving dynamics and takes aesthetic motion to a new level, thereby setting standards for the medium size category on many fronts.

Its great load capacity, sensuously clear design, sporty interior and high class appeal, represent a clear lifestyle of elegance and ultimate refinement. The C-Class has a breathtakingly beautiful face with an aerodynamic design for even more efficient motoring. It is also equipped with new suspension technology and many innovative system options.

The German brand continues to push for more fresh and youthful interior designs. The vehicle’s character has clear design and high quality interior. It has been designed on a cost-conscious fence with the Mercedes-Benz family, balancing enough luxury to justify the three pointed star with the affordability to make it the most popular model in the range. The front section defined by design and equipment line – including classic 3D radiator grille or sporty design with central star – features large air intakes and sharply defined headlamp contours (day and night) to present the self-assured classic face of the new C-Class Saloon.

The strong visual impact of the C-Class Saloon exterior is continued in the interior. High-quality finish and materials, cultured sports styling, a tasteful colour scheme and intelligent details, create an atmosphere of easy poise and assurance. The brand had used premium materials for the door panelling and the instrument panel, which add to the overall unmistakable feeling of modern luxury.

The efficient and high performance engineering incorporated in the car delivers a higher level of driving pleasure. In the petrol range, the output of the entry-level C 180 is 115 kW/156 hp with a maximum torque of 4.5 percent from 220 to 250 Newton metres, and an output of 135Kw/184 hp with a torque peak of 300 Newton metres from 28100 rpm for the C 200. The engines considerably improve the performance and fuel consumption of the four-cyclinder models. When accelerating from standstill to 100 km/h, the C 200 is 0.5 seconds faster than its predecessor.

The C- Class model incorporates a raft of further measures that help reduce the impact on the environment. The petrol engine measures such as the combination of exhaust gas turbo charging with direct injection and an enhanced combustion process reduce both fuel consumption and emissions.

The C-Class has Artico man-made leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, keyless Go starting function, 7G-tronic Plus Cruise Control, three-mode ambient interior lighting, Audio 20 CD with touch pad and a multi-function screen that incorporates satellite navigator, Bluetooth audio and phone connections and digital radio. As for safety, Mercedes-Benz has all C-Class models fitted with nine airbags, Agility Control with selective damping system, LED headlamps and, a first for the class, autonomous emergency braking as standard.

The model offers a clear design and a host of technical innovations, exemplary emission and fuel consumption values that set a new standard for affordability in the luxury market- thanks to the Eco Start/Stop function, as well as a comprehensive scope of standard equipment i.e. the Mirror Package with its electrical folding exterior mirrors, and interior and exterior automatic dimming mirrors.

The C-Class is available at any of Weststar Associates’ dealerships in the country.

  • Synagogue building had no approved plan, says Coroner

Synagogue building had no approved plan, says Coroner

A Coroner yesterday indicted the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) for the collapse of its guest house on September 12, last year.

He ordered that the church “be investigated and proceeded against, under the law, by the relevant authority for not possessing necessary building permits”.

Chief Magistrate Oyetade Komolafe recommended that Oladele Ogundeji and Akinbela Fatiregun of Hard Rock Construction Company Limited, which handled the project, be investigated and tried for criminal negligence.

In a 98-minute verdict, Komolafe identified “foundation failure as the remote cause of the collapsed building.

He also identified “structural failure due to a combination of designs and detailing errors as cause of the building collapse”.

Chief Magistrate Komolafe directed that a detailed “fitness for habitation test” be done on the remaining structures/buildings on SCOAN premises on Segun Irefin Street, Ikotun, Lagos.

He dismissed the claims of the church and its witnesses that an aircraft which hovered over the building with infra-sonic sound caused the building to collapse.

The aircraft, he said, was not the cause of the building collapse.

He linked the cause of the victims’ death  “to be consistent with the blunt force trauma that would normally be sustained from a collapsed building”.

Chief Magistrate Komolafe confirmed that 116 persons died in the incident and called out the name of each victim and the specific cause of death.

He said 110 of the victims were identified while six are yet to be identified. The victims are 60 men and 56 women.

Eighty-five of the victims were South Africans; 22 Nigerians; two Benioise and one Togolese.

Chief Magistrate Komolafe said in arriving in his verdict, he relied on the evidence of some medical  expert, including foremost pathologist Prof. John Obafuwa, other professionals and interested parties.

The coroner said he took evidence from 32 witnesses and admitted 45 exhibits.

According to him, the victims died of haemorrhage, loss of limbs, crushed bones, multiple rib fracture, perforated lungs, destruction of the left tibia vessels, suffocation and chest wounds .

He called for the transfer of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Haruna Alab, a Chief Superintendent (CDP) from Ikotun Police Station for for not being alive to his responsibilities.

Alaba, in his testimony, said he was unaware of the aircraft alleged to have hovered over the collapsed building.

He said he was informed of the building collapse by somebody who phoned the station. The coroner advised government agencies responsible for “monitoring and inspection” to be alive to their responsibilities and be vigilant at every stage of construction.

Alternatively he suggested that the function of “monitoring and inspection” be outsourced to a competent professional body that will detect violation of building law and regulations early before any failure.

He advised such agencies to rid themselves of corruption, including issuance of fake receipts and “greasing of palms”.

According to him, statutory/first responders popularly known as rescuers should be adequately equipped to perform their functions effectively and efficiently.

Chief Magistrate Komolafe advised government to reduce cost of obtaining building permits and approval and remove all administrative bottlenecks in order to encourage individuals and organisations to go through the due process of obtaining such documents before they start building.

He urged government to make it mandatory for professionals involved in the design and supervision of major structural building constructions to have indemnity.

Government, he said, must take steps to secure and preserve the site of any collapse building so as not to compromise investigation on the site.

The coroner implored individuals and organisations to obtain building permits before starting their building, adding that they should also engage qualified and competent engineers and consultants for the job.

He urged government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other ancillary bodies to educate the public on the need to always allow statutory and first responders perform their duties during rescue operations and emergency cases without hindrance.

The Coroner’s Inquest, was set up by Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice under the Lagos State Coroner’s System Law No. 7 of 2007 to investigate the cause and circumstances of several deaths that followed the collapse.

The law gave the Coroner court the powers of a magistrate’s court to summon and compel the attendance of witnesses, including medical examiners, and require them to give evidence, produce documents or present other relevant materials.

The law also requires the verdict of a Coroner as certified in writing to be forwarded to the Attorney General. Such verdict may form the basis of criminal prosecutions depending on the evidence collected.

South Africa  last night hailed the verdict, saying: “Government notes the ruling that the Synagogue Church of all Nations must be investigated and prosecuted for negligence.”

Acting South African cabinet spokesperson Phumla Williams, in a statement,  said she hoped the verdict would bring closure to the families who lost loved ones.

  • Ford unveils Focus RS

    Ford unveils Focus RS

The all-new Ford Focus RS delivers 350 PS maximum power from specially engineered 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine. With advanced technologies, Focus RS is among 12 new performance vehicles Ford will offer through 2020 globally, writes TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO

Ford has announced that the all-new Focus RS high-performance hatchback will deliver a maximum power output of 350 PS. The Ford Performance-developed model features a unique version of the new 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine that debuted with the all-new Ford Mustang.

Ford will demonstrate the performance of the all-new Focus RS to the public for the first time at the 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed in United Kingdom, where Ken Block – Gymkhana and World Rallycross star – will tackle the famous Hillclimb at the wheel of a prototype car.

“We promised enthusiasts a serious driving machine and, with 350 PS under the hood, that is exactly what we will deliver,” said Dave Pericak, Global Director, Ford Performance.

“The stunning pace and innovative technology of the all-new Focus RS place it head-to-head with performance models from luxury and exotic marques, and it’s ready for the challenge,” Pericak said.

With Focus RS, Ford is introducing its Ford Performance All-Wheel Drive with Dynamic Torque Vectoring. The innovative system helps deliver a new level of handling capability and driver enjoyment by combining outstanding traction and grip with unmatched agility and cornering speed.

The Focus RS is the first Ford RS model equipped with selectable Drive Modes – including an industry-first Drift Mode that allows controlled oversteer drifts – and Launch Control.

The new 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine for the all-new Focus RS shares its fundamental structure with the all-aluminium four-cylinder engine in the all-new Ford Mustang. The engine has been significantly upgraded for the Focus RS to deliver 10 per cent more power with 350 PS maximum output.

Increased power is generated by a new low-inertia twin-scroll turbocharger with larger compressor that delivers significantly greater air flow, along with a much bigger intercooler to maximise charge density. Engine breathing also is enhanced through a less restrictive intake design, and a large-bore high performance exhaust system with an electronically controlled valve in the tailpipe that helps optimise the balance of back pressure and noise output.

The cylinder head is produced from an upgraded alloy material capable of withstanding higher temperatures, while the cylinder block employs stronger high-tensile cast iron liners.

Engine cooling also has been given the highest priority, with engineers creating additional space within the front of the vehicle to house a significantly larger radiator pack – the biggest ever fitted to a Focus – which provides the level of cooling demanded for intense circuit driving.

Meticulous calibration work has ensured that the power unit delivers excellent low-end responsiveness with a powerful mid-range pull, climbing to a free-revving top-end up to a maximum rev limit of 6,800 rpm. Maximum torque of 440 Nm is delivered between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm, with 470 Nm available for up to 15 seconds on transient overboost during hard acceleration.

Inspiring performance demands an inspiring soundtrack. Ford Performance engineers have tuned the RS to deliver a rewarding and sporty sound character during spirited driving, with the distinctive burbles and pops that are a RS signature.

“This very special 2.3-litre EcoBoost unit will inspire drivers as they feel the surge of the turbo, and reward them as they take it to the red line – all delivered with a visceral sound guaranteed to put a smile on your face,” Pericak said.

Developed by a team of Ford Performance engineers in Europe and the U.S., the all-new Focus RS is the third generation of Focus RS cars, following models launched in 2002 and 2009. The 30th car to wear the legendary RS badge, the Focus RS will be built in Saarlouis, Germany.

Focus RS is one of 12 new performance vehicles Ford will bring to customers globally through 2020 as part of a new era of Ford performance, and will be available for delivery to European customers from early 2016.

  • Land Rover showcases smartphone-controlled Range Rover Sport

Jaguar Land Rover has revealed some of the prototype technologies that its United Kingdom-based research team are developing to deliver autonomous driving in the future.

A Remote Control Range Rover Sport research vehicle demonstrates how a driver could drive the vehicle from outside the vehicle via their smartphone. The smartphone app includes controls for steering, acceleration and braking, as well as the ability to change between high- and low-range gears. This would allow the driver to walk alongside the vehicle, at a maximum speed of 6km/h, to manoeuvre their vehicle out of challenging situations safely, or even to negotiate difficult off-road terrain.

The driver could use the smartphone to reverse the vehicle out of a parking space if someone has parked too close for them to open the door, or allow the driver to become their own off-road spotter, to guide the vehicle over off-road obstacles from outside the vehicle.

By walking alongside the vehicle, the driver could continually check ramp, approach and departure angles and allow precise positioning of the vehicle when rock crawling. It could also be an invaluable aid when the vehicle is fording a stream or traversing sections made slippery by mud or snow. The remote control function will only operate if the user is within ten metres of the vehicle and if the smart key can be detected. The system will stop the vehicle if the driver moves out of range or gets too close.

Future possibilities for this technology could include more autonomous functionality where the driver gives a simple command from the handset to traverse an obstacle or exit a parking space, and the vehicle does the rest.

  • Four Nigerians for Ranger Odyssey Boot Camps

Four Nigerians for Ranger Odyssey Boot Camps

The excitement and anticipation for this year’s Ford Ranger Odyssey is building rapidly, and the action has spread across numerous African countries, including Nigeria which held its in-market selections on Friday, May 29.

Following the initial call to action, which received around 800 entries, 12 finalists were chosen to take part in the Ranger Odyssey evaluation in conjunction with local Ford dealer group, Coscharis Motors Limited.

The participants had the opportunity to drive the Ford Ranger in a variety of conditions, and were assessed and scored on a variety of factors in terms of brain and brawn during group and individual tasks.

This included testing their driving abilities along with several challenges to assess their interpersonal and communication skills, leadership abilities, interaction and competitiveness. Proficiency in English was also evaluated.

Ultimately only four contestants could be selected for the next step on Ranger Odyssey – to represent Nigeria at the Boot Camp in South Africa from June 18 to 21.

Ford increased the number of contestants from one to four this year, giving Nigeria a great opportunity chance to really represent in Namibia.

The Nigerian representatives include Giftson Onuiri, who came first in the contest. He has a Bachelor’s in law, and claims to have a big heart and great driving potential.

Onuiri will be joined by Moyo Fawole and John Amadi who came second and third respectively. Both showed great capability behind the wheel of the Ranger and are looking forward to representing their country at Ranger Odyssey 2015.

The fourth and final contestant is Chinonso Okezuo, the winner of last year’s contest. Okezuo was unable to attend last year due to the travel restrictions implemented as a result of the Ebola outbreak, but has been given a second chance.

A total of 40 contestants from South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa will be chosen to attend the Boot Camp in the Karoo region of South Africa. They undergo four days of extensive training and assessment in order to determine the top 20 finalists that will go through to the final event in Namibia.

Ranger Odyssey 2015 will take the selected contestants on a life-changing 12-day expedition through the remote and extremely challenging north-western region of Namibia, from July 23 to August 3, this year.

For the first time, the Ranger Odyssey will feature two elimination rounds during the course of the trip. The two lowest-scoring contestants will leave the group on day four, while another four contestants depart on day 10.

The winner will be selected from the final 14, and ultimately stands to win an Odyssey Ranger for a year, plus an equivalent in local currency of  ZAR5 000 worth of fuel per month – a truly spectacular prize!

  • Peugeot to build plant in Morocco

PSA Peugeot Citroen has unveiled plans to build a 557 million euro ($630 million) Moroccan factory, as the French carmaker seeks to reduce both production costs and its reliance on Europe following a brush with bankruptcy.

The site near the coastal city of Kenitra will begin assembling small and subcompact models for Africa and the Middle East in 2019, Chief Executive Carlos Tavares said after signing the investment deal at Morocco’s royal palace in Rabat.

An initial yearly production capacity of 90,000 vehicles is expected to rise to 200,000 as sales pick up, he said.

The planned factory, first reported by Reuters last November, represents a belated step by Paris-based Peugeot to expand into lower-cost vehicles and emerging markets, reducing its exposure to Western Europe’s relatively stagnant demand and high production costs.

It is also a sign of Morocco’s growing industrial clout, which has seen it draw increasing investment in sectors ranging from cars to aerospace.

Peugeot said it expects the plant to source 60 percent of components locally, rising to 80 percent as the supply chain develops. It will have a 4,500-strong workforce once at the 200,000-vehicle capacity.

“Africa and the Middle East are historic markets for PSA and the region is expected to become a profitable driver of our internationalisation,” Tavares said.

The former Renault second-in-command took over at Peugeot last year, following a three billion-euro government-backed bailout in which it sold matching 14 percent stakes to the French state and Chinese carmaker Dongfeng after racking up billions of euros in losses.

Under his “Back in the Race” recovery plan, Peugeot is pursuing a five percent operating margin.

The core automotive division returned to a small profit in 2014, but with about 60 percent of sales still recorded in the cut-throat European market, where the profitability of mass-market carmakers is under constant pressure.

  • Toyota executive arrested for ‘shipping’ pain pills

Toyota Executive Julie Hamp has been arrested after allegedly using a parcel service to ship Oxycodone to Tokyo.

While the drug is legal in the United States, it is classified as a narcotic in Japan, according to CNN.

Hamp violated the Narcotics Control Act, which limits the possession and transport of drugs classified as illegal in the country of origin.

When informed of her arrest, Toyota Chief Executive Officer Akio Toyoda said he was “sorry that a senior executive had caused such controversy but she was an indispensable colleague that the company believed in.”

“Through the investigation, I believe that we will learn she had no intent to violate the law,” he said.
