  • Lamborghini spends 25,000 hours rebuilding Countach prototype

Lamborghini spends 25,000 hours rebuilding Countach prototype

The original Lamborghini Countach is back 50 years after changing the course of automotive history.

The Raging Bull’s in-house restoration team, Polo Storico, has just unveiled an inch-perfect recreation of the LP 500 prototype that debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1971. And to make sure it got everything just right, the division spent over 25,000 hours faithfully recreating every single aspect of the car from the ground up.

It’s difficult to overstate the Countach’s impact on the supercar world. With a wide stance and its signature angular wedge profile, Lamborghini’s “idea car” broke new ground in supercar design. To be sure, the design elements were controversial at the time, but they were then adopted by countless automakers in the decades since, and the Countach would go on to become one of the most iconic cars of the ‘70s and ’80s.

Lamborghini’s Geneva show car may be one of the most important vehicles of the last-half century but it wasn’t long for this world. In fact, it was scarified for crash-testing purposes in 1974, according to the Italian marque. But the car was given a second chance at life in 2017, when an unnamed classic car aficionado contacted the brand about building another one. He wasn’t interested in a restomod that looked like the original, he wanted an exact replica both inside and out.

So, the Polo Storico team set out to build just that. They pored over original build documents, closely analysed all the contemporaneous photos they could and utilised computer scanning technology to ensure they captured every detail. Original parts were used whenever possible and when none could be found, they were fabricated from scratch.

No corners were cut: Everything from its unique chassis to the drivetrain and the car’s Pirelli Cinturato CN12 tires come from the original LP 500 prototype. Its sheet metal body is even coated in the same yellow hue, Giallo Fly Speciale.

The rebuilt Countach LP 500 will make its public debut at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Cernobbio, Italy this weekend. No pricetag has been placed on the rebuild, but it is expect to be far north of the $2.64 million that the recently announced Aventador-based Countach LPI 800-4 hybrid goes for. But a brand-new Countach might just be worth it.

  • Audi SQ7 zooms in with comfort, high tech

By Tajudeen Adebanjo with agency report

The 2021 Audi SQ7 is a three-row luxury performance sport utility vehicle (SUV). The Q7 was already one of the favourite luxury SUVs, and that capital S front of its name means it gets a whole host of performance upgrades. Most notable of the superhero upgrades is a 4.0-litre 500-horsepower turbocharged V8. Some design tweaks also help it stands out in a crowd.

There are more performance variants of SUVs hitting the market each year, so the SQ7 has plenty of potential rivals. You might look at mainly two-row SUVs such as the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Porsche Cayenne, or you might go bigger with the BMW X7 or Mercedes GLS. Among them, the SQ7’s mix of three rows of standard seating, 500 hp and relatively reasonable pricing is pretty appealing.

Despite its performance persuasion, the SQ7 delivers an abundance of daily comfort. Credit goes largely to an excellently tuned air suspension. It manages to soak up road irregularities like a sponge without making the ride feel like Jell-O in the process. Our Prestige trim tester also included dual-pane windows that greatly reduced the ambient wind and surrounding noise. Thankfully, the growl of the 4.0-litre V8 engine is present when you want to hear it.

The SQ7 seats have excellent adjustability, providing hours of comfort on the road while offering the necessary lateral support to minimise side-to-side sloshing on a curvy road. Our tester’s four-zone climate control was very effective, and the heated and ventilated front seats are significantly better than what BMW offers.

Audi’s bold decision to go full touchscreen on its latest infotainment interface is controversial. The design is, at the very least, visually appealing.

The Q7’s boxy greenhouse offers excellent outward visibility and plenty of room for passengers, as long as the third row is reserved for kid use only. Same goes for getting in and out; there’s plenty of head clearance complemented by a relatively low step-in height, but access to the third row is cumbersome.

Further easing the stress of parking lots is the optional 360-degree camera system that provides a host of viewing angles for maneuvering in tight spots, including a 3D image as if you’re looking at the car from outside.

The SQ7’s infotainment interface is controversial, but you can’t deny that the cabin tech looks fully modern and comes with plenty of features. It supports wireless Apple CarPlay too. The upgraded Bang & Olufsen audio system sounds amazing, but it also costs a lot.

Audi’s voice control system isn’t as comprehensive as Mercedes’ excellent MBUX system, but it’s very good compared to most systems on the market. It will pull up an address or point of interest quickly, activate the driver’s seat heater, or switch to a satellite radio station with ease.

Most driver aids are standard on the Prestige trim and well worth the money. Audi’s sharp 360-degree cameras allow for multiple viewing angles, including one that looks at the vehicle from the outside.

Cargo capacity ranges from 14.2 cubic feet (behind the third row) to a max of 69.6 cubic feet with all rows folded — this would be about average for a standard three-row midsize SUV, but it’s generally compared to other performance SUVs. The power-folding third-row seats are a nice touch and can fold in any second-row seat position. Interior storage is less impressive — the sizable door pockets are the best for stashing stuff.

A bit rare for the class are three sets of car seat anchors across the second row and two in the third row, providing some good options for child seat placement. Audi cites a 7,700-pound towing capacity for our SQ7 with the optional tow package, which is excellent.

The SQ7 is EPA-estimated to return 17 mpg combined (15 city/21 highway). Considering the performance delivered by this V8, the fuel economy is pretty decent, matching that of the similarly sized SQ8 but besting mpg from the more powerful BMW X5 M and Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 63 S.

  • ECO buses hit market

    By Tajudeen Adebanjo

Natural gas-powered vehicle manufacturer, Austrian Technologies Nigeria, has released details of its full range of ECO-Green buses, some of which are already in the market.

It said the buses built with European standards for critical climate and infrastructure are targeted at private and public transport operators including schools and corporate organisations.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of Austrian Technologies Nigeria Limited, Johann Rieger, the bus range is built on a single platform  and comprises 8.5m length (Marcopolo size)  for 60 passengers; 10.5m for 80 passengers, 12m for 100 people, 12.8m for 110 passengers and 18m accommodating 160 passengers.

The standard at ECO Green Buses is a monocoque chassis-body structure with advanced frame safety technology.

The core is a 3H high-strength body with front and rear buffer beams, roll-over safety frame and absorbed energy structure.

The key advantages of this technology are-higher safety for passengers through optimised distribution of impact forces through overall of body frame structure; improved life span of structure; lower operating costs (maintenance, tyres, fuel consumption); and the weight advantage over a classical chassis-body structure.

The whole-vehicle runs through an 18 stage E-coating process (cathode electrophoretic coating) for corrosion protection.

The electrophoretic paint becomes a layer of even, smooth, and strong adhesive paint film on the surface of body frame after electrochemical reaction. It makes the surface of body frame and inner cavity of being strongly anticorrosive, antirust, salt fog resistant and heat moist resistant and antirust of up to 12 years.

All buses come with maintenance free DANA axles and adjustable Front and rear air suspension with FIRESTONE air bags. All wheels have disc brakes with automatic slack adjuster from KNORR in combination with WABCO ABS. This high European safety standard improves safety and reliability of buses and supports operations by high availability of buses through reduced down time and shortened time of maintenance. The life span of these components is a multiple of the normally applied low-cost components.

A tyre pressure montoring system with display on instrument panel and full integration into the ECO Telematics system is standard and one of the core safety features of ECO Green Buses. BOSCH power steering is one of the world’s safest steering systems for commercial vehicles.

The cockpit is highly ergonomic. The combination of the fully integrated digital cockpit and employment of high-quality European core components are just some of the key factors that make ECO Green Buses efficient and safe.

The driver receives direct feedback in real-time on his/her behavior in safety and economic driving through the digital dashboard and ECO Telematics system.

The possibility to convert gas buses to zero emission hydrogen operation upon local availability of hydrogen is another unique feature of ECO Green Buses. Bus structure, gas supply chain and safety equipment are already prepared for such conversion at little effort and costs.

Rieger said the buses are the safest and most economic mass transit vehicles which could reduce carbon footprints by 95 per cent and operating cost by 30 per cent.

He said: “We also have 5.4m (Hiace type) as well as 6.5m and 7.5m (Toyota Coaster) type buses.” It is crucial for the further development of Nigerian transport sector to include and onboard Danfo operators and other stakeholders into the public transport operations.”

Rieger noted that the buses are equipped with gas engines of higher emission standards (Euro 5) with no toxic, smog or smoke, guaranteeing reduced noise and lower fuel costs

Some of the unique features of an ECO-green bus are given as roof mounted CNG cylinder with up to 500km range and gas leakage detection system; tyre pressure monitoring system; two emergency roof hatches (front/rear); fire extinguisher in driver’s cabin, automatic fire extinguishers in engine compartment; all disc brakes with automatic slack adjuster and the ABS.

Others are speed limiter, alcohol test and driver’s fatigue detection with driver’s biometric identification, CCTV camera system that can be directly integrated into the city surveillance system; reverse camera; handicapped ramp and wheelchair area.

All buses are equipped with ECO Viroxx air purification system, a bipolar ionization system integrated into the ventilation system of ECO Green Buses. It is the only system worldwide that permanently and chemical free sanitizes the indoor air in buses throughout the entire operation.

The ECO Viroxx bipolar ionization technology is clinically proven to inactivate up to 99.999% of COVID-19 and other viruses and germs. SARS-Corona viruses can be rendered completely harmless at the molecular level by destroying the structure of their virus surface, envelopes, and tips.

High-energy ionization of the cabin and the production of a bipolar aerial ionization network can achieve a natural air disinfection rate of over 99.999% (log 5). This process inactivates or eliminates viruses, germs, bacteria, molds and eliminates unpleasant smells.

Rieger said, “Up to 70 per cent of all components of the ECO-Green buses should be manufactured or assembled locally within five years of operation including the first green engine.”

Additionally, the company offers bus Simulator, bus scanners, telematics and ICT and intensive training of drivers and maintenance personnel to assure proper maintenance of vehicles.

  • BMW to reduce carbon emissions in car life cycle

BMW to reduce carbon emissions in car life cycle

BMW plans to reduce carbon emissions across the life cycle of its vehicles – including the production process – at least 40 per cent from 2019 levels by 2030, the carmaker said, up from a previous target of a third.

T o achieve this, the Munich-based automaker intends to increase the proportion of recycled and reusable materials used in manufacturing its vehicles from 30 per cent to 50 per cent, it said in a statement ahead of the IAA Mobility conference in Munich this week.

“We are committed to a clear course to achieve the 1.5 degree target,” BMW Chief Executive Officer Oliver Zipse said, referring to the Paris Agreement.

BMW has been reluctant to set a hard deadline for phasing out fossil-fuel cars, pointing out limitations to the expansion of electric vehicles including the sore lack of charging infrastructure across the EU and elsewhere.

Still, the automaker has set a range of sustainability targets in the past, including generating at least half of BMW Group sales from electric vehicles by 2030 and reducing CO2 emissions per vehicle and kilometre driven by at least half from 2019 levels in the same time frame.

Like its competitors, the company has warned that its revenues in coming months could be plagued by chip shortages and raw material prices, despite reporting stronger than expected profits in its latest quarterly results.

  • Kia relaunches Ownership Reward Programme

    Kia relaunches Ownership Reward Programme
