  • Uber introduces tipping for driver-partners

Uber  has announced that riders in Nigeria will now be able to tip their drivers after every trip to show appreciation for excellent service delivery.

This new tipping feature will be 100 per cent optional and riders will be given optional tip values as well as an option to customise an amount for their drivers.

Uber West Africa General Manager Lola Kassim, explained that “driving is more than just getting people from point A to B. Every day, driver-partners do their best to make riders’ lives easier – from getting them to that big business meeting, first date or must-see match – they do it all. This is why improving the driving experience has been a key priority for us over the last few years.

“The tipping feature comes as a result of the feedback we received from driver-partners through our various engagement sessions with them. With this feature, we want to ensure that drivers that often go above and beyond for their riders are being recognised and rewarded. This could be the driver that waits for riders to safely enter their home, assists with inserting and removing luggage from the trunk or simply a pleasant driver that is warm and friendly and helps you get through Lagos traffic.”

This feature will be made available below the rating and compliments section in the app and will remain completely optional. Payments will be deducted from the rider’s registered credit or debit card, cash-paying riders are free to tip an additional amount of their choice. All tips from riders will go directly to driver-partners and Uber receives no service fee.

  • Porsche Cayenne hits Nigeria

With a minimum of N46 million, Nigerian auto lovers can go home with the latest generation of Porsche Cayenne.

The Third Generation Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) model is now available in Nigeria, continuing its triumphant story since 2002 when it made its debut as Porsche’s first off-road variant and first vehicle in the German automaker’s line with four doors.

The arrival of the brand’s flagship SUV was first celebrated at a special media event held by Porsche Centre Lagos, a division of Stallion Motors Limited.

Completely redesigned, the Cayenne brings closer its racetrack roots and offers greater versatility and more performance than ever before.

Powerful turbo-charged engines, enhanced chassis systems, a range off-road modes and a sharper design underpin the model’s credentials as a true sports car in its segment.

Additional enhancements to the latest generation also include intelligent assistance systems and more connectivity features aimed at offering improved driver and passenger comfort.

A bold new design stays true to the unmistakable identity of the Cayenne, but delivers a more streamlined, athletic impression to complement an increased length and lower height.

The pronounced bonnet, redesigned headlight contour and trademark large air intakes underline the Cayenne’s improved driving dynamics from the front. Narrower side windows, a redesigned rear wing, wide rear end with integrated light strip and wider alloy wheels further enhance and emphasise its sports car genes.

The new Cayenne offers a spacious cabin, with several comfort and convenience features throughout.

The luggage compartment has been increased by 100 litres, just as the Porsche Advanced Cockpit concept brings the vehicle and the occupants closer through increased connectivity and intuitive controls.

The centre console with Direct Touch Control and a new 12.3-inch touch display for the Porsche communication management acts as the driver’s interface to all vehicle functions.

General Manager Porsche Centre Lagos Anurag Shah, said: “Since its initial launch, the Cayenne has been one of the most popular models in Nigeria, and I have no doubt that this third generation, which offers even more sports car performance and practicality, will continue this success story.

“For me, the new Cayenne’s versatility is truly unique. It is at home on any road, but it is equally ready to explore new terrain. It enjoys a short sprint as much as a long road trip, and commute to work as much as a lap on the track. It is capable of producing a superb drive experience virtually anywhere, and that is really what sets the Cayenne apart from any other SUVs. We are very excited to be welcoming it to Nigeria.”

The third generation model range combines powerful and efficient engines with a new, responsive eight-speed Tiptronic S gearbox, which enhances capabilities, thanks to shorter response times and sportier ratios in the lower gears.

The six-cylinder turbo engine of the Cayenne delivers 450 Nm of torque and 340 hp, a 40 hp increase on its predecessor. It reaches 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds, or just 5.9 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package, and has a top speed of 245 km/h.

  • Tyre management and safety

Tyres, including the extra, are very vital to safe driving. Several reports revealed a lot of accidents and fatalities caused by tyre blowout. It is, however, disheartening that a lot of vehicle owners and drivers are not paying the required attention to tyre standards. I would like to explore the essential facts about vehicle tyres in this article.

The whole weight of a vehicle rests on the tyres. The tyres facilitates the movement of the vehicle through effective traction on the road. The condition of the vehicle tyres therefore, determines how well they carry the weight of the vehicle. The success and safety of other forms of vehicle maneuverings depend largely on the condition of the tyres.

Braking – If the tread of a tyre is worn out, the tyre will have less traction on the road and braking will be impaired.

Blow out – A weak tyre can easily burst while in motion. Overused tyres, tyres left for too long on the ground, expired tyres, and substandard tyres will easily burst while moving on the road.

Expiration-Tyres are manufactured to last for between four and five years. The manufacturing date of a tyre is a 4 – digit code written as week and year of manufacture. When you add four years to it, the result will give you the expiry date of the tyres. An expired tyre like an expired drug, no matter how new it looks is a safety risk when used on the road.

Tyre Inflation – The recommended inflation rate of a tyre is usually written on the door pillar of a car, fuel tank lid or elsewhere in kpa or psi. It is also written on the tyres. In my Corporate Driver Training sessions, I always advise vehicle owners and drivers not to rely on the inflation rate printed on the tyres, but more on those written on the door pillar or other parts of the vehicle. This is because the tyre manufacturer had no idea of the weight of the vehicle to use the tyres. The vehicle manufacturer, who already knew the weight of the vehicle, is in a better position to determine the appropriate tyres to use.  Never depend on the inflation rate recommended by Vulcanisers. Rather, depend mainly on the rate recommended by the vehicle manufacturers.

Over – Inflation – When a tyre is over inflated, it wears off faster at the centre of the tyre thereby worsening the traction and fuels tyre blowout.

Under-Inflation – When a tyre is under – inflated, it wears off on the sides thereby fuelling the overheating of the tyres and eventual blowout.

Cornering – The condition of a tyre greatly determines the safety of a vehicle in negotiating a bend. A weak or under – inflated tyres while cornering may cause tyre burst or roll – over at sharp bends.

Wheel balancing and Alignment – should be promptly done as and when necessary as part of the safe tyre management practice. The frequency depends on the condition of the road used.

Tyre rotation -,should be carried out at the appropriate intervals depending on the distance covered by the vehicle and level of wears on the tyres.

Vulcanising –  Modern technology that does damage the tyres should be preferred to the conventional method of removing and fixing of tyres.

Tyre use – Drivers must avoid using the tyres to rub or climb road kerbs to reduce the rate of wear and tear on the tyres. Drivers should occasionally check to pick out broken bottles, iron and stones from the tyres to prevent a quick damage to them.

Avoid using expired, worn-out, twisted, over – inflated, under – inflated and inappropriate tyres. The newness of your tyres should not a passport to over – speeding, always remember the condition of the road, weather and manufacturers error which could fuel safety risks on the road.

FRSC, VIOs and other Traffic Management Officers should intensify efforts in the monitoring of the Standards of vehicle tyres right at the Motor Parks, Bus stops and on the roads to ensure compliance to vehicle and tyre standards to enhance safety on Nigeria roads.

More than 500,000 sixth-generation Mustangs have been sold worldwide since 2015, with the pony picking up an additional half point of global share last year to capture 15.4 per cent of the segment.

This was fuelled in part by the new Mustang Bullitt, which exceeded global sales forecasts by 25 per cent .

Global sales data are based on IHS Markit 2018 total new vehicle registrations for all sports car segments. US sales are based on 2018 industry reported sales.

Surprisingly, some of our loyal customers have already started to make enquiries on this Ranger which is a good signal that this vehicle will be well accepted and will do well in our market,” he said.

Accordingly, the front-end design of the popular XLT series has been updated to have a more horizontal feel, with the centre grille bar now divided into two, giving it a more precise and well-crafted look.

The lower bumper also presents a sense of solidity and strength through the centre beam that runs into the outer fog lamp areas. With a wider lower grille the new bumper complements and harmonises well with new front end. The same design execution has been applied to XL and XLS variants.
