EKSU lauds Akande’s research breakthrough on environmental safety, public health

The Department of Physics at Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, has commended one of its distinguished academics, Dr. Taiwo Hassan Akande, for a body of scientific research that has drawn international attention and advancing critical discourse in environmental safety, public health protection, and sustainable energy development.

Akande’s scholarly works, published in reputable peer-reviewed international journals, address some of the most pressing environmental and health challenges facing developing and industrialised societies alike.

His research applies advanced scientific methodologies to examine radiation exposure in soil, groundwater, and agricultural environments – areas increasingly recognized as silent but consequential determinants of long-term public health outcomes.

According to senior academics within the department, the significance of Akande’s work lies not only in its technical depth but also in its direct societal relevance.

His investigations provide empirical evidence on how naturally occurring radioactive materials, when left unregulated or poorly monitored, can pose measurable risks to human populations and ecological systems.

Professor Anthony Ifeanyi Mukolu, a senior member of the Department of Physics, described the research as “a substantial contribution to environmental physics and public health safety, with implications that extend well beyond Nigeria to the global scientific community.”

He noted that the studies offer practical reference points for policymakers, environmental regulators, and health agencies grappling with radiation-related risk management.

One of Akande’s most widely cited studies focuses on radon concentration in groundwater and soil gas, an invisible environmental hazard linked to increased cancer risk following prolonged exposure.

The research identified elevated radon levels in certain residential and agricultural settings, underscoring the need for routine environmental monitoring and informed public health interventions.

Experts say the findings are particularly valuable to water resource managers, environmental protection agencies, and urban planners, as they provide data-driven guidance for mitigating long-term health risks associated with groundwater use and land development.

Beyond environmental radiation studies,  Akande has also made notable contributions to renewable energy research, with a focus on the electricity generation potential and economic feasibility of wind energy systems. His work evaluates wind resource availability, system performance, and cost-effectiveness, supporting broader national and global efforts toward clean energy adoption, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

Professor Ebenezer Babatope Faweya, a leading researcher in the department and a frequent collaborator, noted that Akande’s publications are “well-received internationally and reflect the kind of applied research that successfully bridges scientific theory with real-world impact.” He added that such research aligns with global priorities on climate change mitigation and energy transition.

The Department of Physics further disclosed that Akande’s research outputs are widely indexed and cited across major global scientific databases, a marker of both quality and international relevance.

His work has attracted scholarly engagement from researchers and institutions across Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America.

University authorities described Dr. Akande’s achievements as a source of institutional pride and a clear indication of Ekiti State University’s growing footprint in high-impact scientific research. The university reaffirmed its commitment to supporting academics whose work contributes meaningfully to environmental protection, public health advancement, and sustainable energy solutions.

Merry Gilbert moves to partner key MDAs, harps on youths, tourism, others as economic drivers

Mercy Gilberte, Vice President of Clapton Football Club, and chairperson of the Conservative Ward One in the United Kingdom (UK), has identified youths as key drivers to unlock Nigeria’s economic potential.

She highlighted education, minerals, agriculture, and tourism as areas she would like to invest in, adding that tourism is one of Nigeria’s untapped economically viable sectors.

During an interview with newsmen in Abuja— the nation’s capital, on Friday, May 31, the Zimbabwean- born emphasised the importance of understanding the problems facing Nigerians from those directly affected.

Gilbert was hosted by the president, Global Migration Research Institute, GMRI, who is also the president, UNESC Foundation, Dr. Azuma Ijoma Williams.

Among other major stakeholders, she recently forged a partnership with the National Youth Council (NYC).

Furthermore, she will be collaborating with the raw materials under the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, paving the way for innovative breakthroughs.

She said: “I think it’s essential to analyze the problems first,” she said. “Yesterday, I met with a medical doctor, and we discussed the problems facing Nigerians. As an outsider and a westerner, I don’t fully understand the problems, but I believe that to fix them, you need to understand them from those who are directly affected.”

Gilberte praised the determination and hard work of Nigerians, particularly the youths, whom she believes are the drivers of society and the future.

Gilbert who is also the Chief Executive Officer, British African Business Forum (BABF) expressed her desire to tackle youth unemployment and create jobs through a pilot program in Delta State, aiming to train over one million youths in the next five years.

“The basic areas I’m interested in are education, which is highly important to me because educating people means educating a village, especially women.

“Then there’s power, electricity, renewable energy, water, and tourism. Tourism drives a nation because it comes in different spheres. You can combine tourism and sports, which brings in investment, trade, and various aspects, allowing people to see the country and culture for what it is”, she averred.

Gilberte added: “Youths are the drivers of society and the future. Unfortunately, many youths in Nigeria are unemployed, and tackling this issue will help terminate the stigma Nigeria faces, especially regarding crime and deviant behaviors.

“So, I want to focus on youth employment because many young people are educated but lack jobs. My pilot program in Delta State offers over 108 courses, and we plan to replicate it across Nigeria, training young people and partnering with banks and organizations to get them employed in various fields.”

On leadership, the deputy political chairman, Conservative Party offered her expertise, gained from various areas such as sports, politics, and business, and reeled out plans to train people across industries in Nigeria through courses run in conjunction with London universities.

“My leadership skills have played a role in different areas, and I’ve gained expertise in running courses in leadership. I’d like to train people in Nigeria, offering short courses to one-year specialized courses for leadership, whether in government or business.”

Gilberte also emphasized the need to empower men, often left behind in empowerment initiatives, particularly in mental health programs.

“Believe in yourself; don’t think that selling your sexuality opens doors. You can sell your mind, ideas, and ideologies, and that will open doors for you,” she advised women and girls.

Gilberte’s inspiring story, from her humble beginnings in Zimbabwe to her current position, serves as a testament to her determination and success.

Her commitment to Nigeria’s development and willingness to invest in key sectors are a welcome boost to the country’s growth and progress.

  • G4EP Project: Tinubu’s aide Asefon visits FUDMA, mulls gender studies centre

G4EP Project: Tinubu’s aide Asefon visits FUDMA, mulls gender studies centre

The Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Students Engagement, Comrade Sunday Asefon, at the weekend, visited the Federal University Dutsen Ma (FUDMA) in Katsina State where he met with the management of the institution and attended the matriculation ceremony of new 500 students.

Asefon was also at FUDMA to foster Gender Education, Engagement, Empowerment & Entrepreneurship Program (G4EP), a brainchild of his office, under the chairmanship of Hon. Judith Ogbara.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Armaya’u Bichi, and the management team, were taken by surprise with Asefon’s visit because the institution had not been able to receive any visitor due to the fear of insecurity occasioned by banditry around the university’s host community and local government area of Dutse Ma in Katsina State for some time.

They expressed gratitude for Asefon’s bravery and commitment to establish a new narrative for guests and visitors to the University with his visit.

Speaking on the visit, the presidential aide said he had a productive meeting with FUDMA’s management team before he and his team proceeded to the University Center for Gender Studies, one of the major highlights of the visit, aimed for partnership and the execution of the GEEEEP project.

He also promised to take the security plight of the institution to President Tinubu for solution in order to relocate it from the current takeoff site to its sprawling permanent site given the increase in students population.

“We were conducted around major facilities including the Library, ICT Center, and a newly completed Lecture Theatre and office spaces designated to be named after myself in the takeoff site where the University has moved all her students to since the deteriorating security situation in the main campus following bandit attacks within the axis.

“We proceeded to the main campus also to assess the situation so as to get insight into the situation for possible Federal Government’s action. It was a marvellous experience.

“I inspected facilities including the Entrepreneurship Center, housing the lucrative enterprise workshops and laboratories where practical skills and enterprise are taught. We understudied the entire center with a water treatment laboratory.

“Like I assured the students and the management of the university of His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s renewed commitment to change the dimension of the education system in Nigeria, with priority and special attention placed on the transformation and repositioning of the sector which has birthed numerous interventions recently including salary arrears payment, exclusion of tertiary institutions from IPPIS, reversal of 40% deduction into the Federation Account, and the Student Loan Act.

“I promise more attention and renewed effort of the Federal Government in ensuring the return for use of the University’s main campus soonest. The facilities are top-notch, and we can’t continue to allow them to waste while the student population grows beyond the takeoff site,” he stated.

Asefon and his entourage also graced the matriculation ceremony of 500 new students of the School of Continuing Education of the University, sponsored by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibril.

“I commend and appreciate the Deputy Senate President for his unprecedented passion for education development and continued support for youth from Kano State to acquire education and support for the entire Nigerian student body. I admonished the matriculating students to be law-abiding, focused, and determined as their success in this new academic sojourn officially commenced with the matriculation and is only remarkable if they push consistently to witness the convocation ceremony with good grade certification,” Asefon added.

Ogbara with awards of excellence for their renewed commitment to education, student welfare and development, respectively.

“We can’t thank the students and the management of the Federal University Dutsen Ma enough but assure them of our continued support, collaboration, and solidarity now and always with emphasis on a quick return for use of the university’s main campus,” Asefon added.
