    By Tosin Odunewu, UNILAG

The Zaccheus Onumba Dibiaezue Memorial Libraries, ZODML, has partnered the National Library of Nigeria to set up Green Library that will cater for the needs of children and young adults.

Speaking with newsmen in Lagos at the National Library Annex, Lagos, the Co-founder of ZODML, Ifeoma Esiri, said the initiative would also help inculcate the culture of environmental protection in pupils.

“We are creating a Green Library for kids for them to gain knowledge about the need to protect our environment and thereby sustain our planet and stop the degradation of the environment.

The Green Library is a collaboration between ZODML and the National Library of Nigeria for the use of children and young adults between the age of four and 17 years. The effort marks a significant step towards promoting environmental literacy and sustainable practices.

“This will also help in transforming the traditional library experience of the people. We are also going to promote books by African and Black authors. We are also calling on publishers and authors to donate books to the library as we may not have all the resources needed to buy all the books,” she said.

Esiri also explained that a home work zone would be created for pupils in senior secondary school to use.

“The zone will be internet enabled and there will be staff to monitor them, as we don’t want them to misuse the facilities. We are trying to let our young ones know that a reader is a leader and they must imbibe the culture of reading good books,” she added.

Also speaking, Deputy Director, National Library of Nigeria, Obianuju Onuorah, praised ZODML for the initiative.

“What you are doing is in line with the charge by the National Librarian to establish children’s libraries across the country. You have made that easy for us in Lagos now. We have 32 libraries across the country. This collaboration will benefit our communities greatly. The materials are top notch and our children will be better for it.

“I sincerely commend ZODML for this effort and I call on other public spirited bodies and individuals to follow this path. We should not just leave our young ones to the influence of social media and not direct them to positive ways of life,” she said.

  • Olayinka Ajao: Rekindling the flame of LAUTECH,

Olayinka Ajao: Rekindling the flame of LAUTECH,

    • By Simbo Olorunfemi

In establishing Oyo State University of Technology in 1990, the founding fathers had a clear objective for it not to be just another university. Their desire was for a university that would produce self-reliant graduates who would lead the charge in the technological and industrial development of Nigeria, which was why they made it a University of Technology. In line with their objective, the university commenced its first academic session on 19 October 1990, with 436 candidates enrolled in the faculties of Agricultural Sciences, Environmental science Sciences, Engineering and Management Sciences, and Pure and Applied Sciences, with the College of Health Sciences was established a year later.

Following the separation of Osun State from Oyo State, the university’s name was changed to Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, but the dream remained the same. The University has been consistently ranked high by national and international organisations, with ‘The Times Higher Education’ rating LAUTECH as the 11th best university in Nigeria and the number one State University in Nigeria. LAUTECH, which now has 12 Faculties, a post-graduate school, and other centres, with over 40,000 students currently enrolled across 52 departments, has produced thousands of graduates who have continued to live up to the dream of the founding fathers, becoming leading lights in the technological space in Nigeria.

One of those leading lights is Olayinka Ajao, who enrolled in the University shortly after it was founded to study Electrical and Electronics Engineering. He would, upon graduation, join the telecommunications industry, which was just beginning to take shape with the licensing of the first set of companies for GSM operations. In 2001, Ajao joined one of the leading telecommunications companies in Nigeria as a foundation member of Staff, starting a career that would eventually establish him as one of Nigeria’s seasoned Telecommunications experts.  He functioned in different capacities across the industry as a Network Systems Engineer, Technical Support Engineer, and RF Planning & Optimization Engineer (Ericsson & Huawei Equipment), before he was appointed Head of Network Planning/Programme Management at Helios Towers Nigeria in 2008 till 2013 when he left to set up his company, Zyetechcom Integrated Services Nigeria Limited, which has grown to become a major player in the collocation section of telecommunications, with a network of tower-infrastructure to across the country.

With strength in diagnosing complex issues and conceptualizing innovative solutions, Olayinka Ajao, over the last 2 decades, established his name in the industry for his proactive and creative approach to addressing diverse challenges within the realm of Radio Frequency Planning and Optimization, receiving several awards for reducing congestion and drop calls on the network. He would further excel in the development of Towerco infrastructure, earning the CEO Outstanding Performance Award at Helios Towers for his role in growing the Towerco infrastructure of the company from 50 to 1000.

Following on the success he has made of Zyetechcom Integrated Services Nigeria Limited, Olayinka Ajao later expanded his line of business, venturing into Agriculture with the establishment of Harvestmax Agro-Allied Nig Ltd and a property company, Giggles Properties Limited in 2021, which he has grown into a major player in the real estate industry, with portfolio across multiple cities.

Olayinka Ajao is quick to tell those who ask that what has helped him on his journey is his passion for excellence, continuous learning, and a commitment to creating enduring value. Beyond his degree and certification in Engineering as well as extensive training in different aspects of telecommunications, he has earned an MBA as well as numerous certifications at home and abroad in Computer Engineering, Project Management, Leadership, etc., including one from Harvard Law School Programme on Negotiation.

Beyond business, Ajao has demonstrated a keen sense of compassion and passion for community service. This would lead him to set up the Jolade and Adeyi Foundation, which he says was inspired by his “deep-rooted connection” to his heritage and the philanthropic legacies of Mrs. Jolade Mary Ajao and Mr. Adeyi Suleiman.  Through that organization, he has empowered various individuals with limited economic means in Ogbomoso and other parts of Nigeria, rendering different forms of support to the underprivileged and aiding the enrolment of 50 high school students in Ogbomoso for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Board examination.

Buoyed by the dream planted in him at LAUTECH, Olayinka Ajao has remained grounded, always looking back to see how he can help those who might have been left behind while ensuring that the flame of the university keeps burning. Beyond other forms of support rendered over the years, he recently decided to up the ante, committing to the building of a Lecture Theatre for the use of the University. This, he says, is his way of giving back to an institution that gave so much to him, laying the foundation for everything he has been able to accomplish. Future generations of students deserve a better learning environment than the one he had to better prepare them for the demands of the future, he says.

The LAUTECH Community has been paying attention to the activities of Olayinka Ajao in its immediate environment and the country at large, hence the decision to confer on him the award of the honourary Degree of Doctor of Technology, D.Tech (honoris causa) at the 16th Convocation ceremonies of the university holding later this month. It is, no doubt, a recognition that is truly deserved and a tribute to a man who, propelled by the dream of the founding fathers of the university, has taken to town what he got from the gown and has made exceptional contributions to the growth of the telecommunications industry in Nigeria and development of the people and his community. Between him and LAUTECH, this is a fitting way of rekindling the flame that was lit in 1990.

  • Students trained in suicide-related reporting

    Students trained in suicide-related reporting

    By Habeeb Ibrahim, LASUSTECH

A journalist and Website Officer of The Nation Newspaper, Ibrahim Adam, has trained students of Journalism at Lagos State University of Science and Technology’s (LASUSTECH) Mass Communication Department in Ikorodu on how to report suicide and trauma-related incidents.

Speaking during the session in the department newsroom, the journalist said the training was intended to reduce the number of suicides in the country.

Ibrahim added that the seminar was also designed to promote safe reporting and the impact of incidents on journalists.

He emphasised that suicide stories should not be glamorised. This, he said, may cause readers or viewers dealing with mental health issues to take on the approach used by the victim to harm themselves.

He advised students to follow the rules of safe reporting and discourage individuals considering suicide.

However, the speaker admitted that secondary trauma has an emotional and psychological impact on journalists as a result of experiencing incidents or hearing people’s tales.

He proposed a checklist of what to do while interviewing survivors, emphasising the importance of building trust and avoiding possible triggers.

“The reason we’re all here today is to end the way we report suicide. I opted for students so that you are well-informed before joining this industry. We’ve seen and heard about students committing suicide, and it’s all over social media, newspapers, and television, featuring their faces, notes left behind, and the media celebrating it.These are wrong.

“When reporting suicide cases, we should avoid sensationalism. Instead of identifying the method and place of the incident, we should describe it as death and leave the location unspecified. We should not reveal the contents of the report, only mention that a note was discovered and is being reviewed. Do not include specific information about the victim; instead, use a single name, or do not reveal the person’s identity. Also, please do not draw attention to this type of report by posting it on the front page; instead, it should be placed inside the paper.

“When interviewing a survivor, you must be careful not to worsen his or her problem. They will always weep, especially females, but the best thing you can do is build trust with him or her. Develop empathic listening skills, respect their limits when they say no, and avoid anything that would make them furious. You must also be aware of nonverbal communication and provide assistance options.

“As journalists, we are human. We go through a lot after reporting such incidents and it often results in secondary trauma. Imagine reporting a story of a fully loaded container that fell on a ‘Danfo’, killing everyone on board. You get home and start to feel something. This is one of the reasons why journalists must learn to put their mental health first.

“You see journalists having secondary trauma with signs like emotional exhaustion, intrusive thoughts, increased irritability, sleep disturbance, avoidance behaviour, loss of purpose, etc,” he said.

One of the lecturers, Samuel Ogunsanya, commended the journalist for trying to improve students’ skills in safe reporting.

He added that the training will help the students plan for the future.

  • NANS to Fed Govt: establish Price Control Board

NANS to Fed Govt: establish Price Control Board

    By Korede Omololu-David, UNIOSUN

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the Federal Government to establish a Price Control Board to regulate prices of commodities.

A statement by immediate-past Coordinator of NANS Southwest and current media to aide to NANS Senate President,  Comr. Adejuwon Olatunji Emmanuel, noted that the hike in prices of goods and services had become a huge burden on students.

He said the  board would not only stop  hoarding of goods, but ensure fairness and transparency in the  marketplace and foster an environment where every Nigerian can afford the basic necessities of life.

The statement reads: “The implementation of price control measures is not just a matter of economic policy; it is a moral imperative. We cannot stand idly by while our fellow citizens suffer under the weight of inflated prices and economic uncertainty. By taking decisive action to establish a Price Control Board, the government can demonstrate its commitment to the welfare of its citizens and pave the way for a more just and equitable society.

Read Also; Lagos to London: Foreign airlines slash prices to compete with Air Peace

“This disconcerting reality points to a deeper issue: a lack of oversight in regulating prices within our local markets. It is evident that without proper mechanisms in place to control prices, consumers are left vulnerable to exploitation by unscrupulous traders, and the most vulnerable among us bear the brunt of these injustices.

“But let us not forget the role we all play in shaping our economic reality. As individuals and members of the business community, we must uphold ethical standards and refrain from engaging in practices that exacerbate the plight of our fellow Nigerians. Only through collective responsibility and a shared commitment to fairness can we truly address the root causes of our economic challenges.

“As concerned Nigerian students, we are not merely bystanders in this predicament; we are advocates for change. We fervently call upon the government to establish a Price Control Board tasked with the responsibility of regulating prices, preventing hoarding of goods, and shielding consumers from exorbitant prices. Such a board would serve as a beacon of hope, ensuring fairness and transparency in our marketplace and fostering an environment where every Nigerian can afford the basic necessities of life.”

AAPOLY students release new movie ‘April Fool’

    By Caleb Ijioma, AAPOLY

A new movie titled ‘April Fool’ has been released by second-year Higher National Diploma (HND) students in the Mass Communication Broadcast programme at Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic, Ijebu-Igbo. Directed by Damilare Olusiyan, the film premiered in the polytechnic’s main auditorium and was officially launched on YouTube on April 1st, making it accessible for online viewing.

The movie is a collaborative effort by the students enrolled in the HND Mass Communication Broadcast programme. As part of their curriculum, the students are required to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in the course MAC 417 (Film Production Techniques) to produce a full-length feature film. The movie estimated to be worth over N2 million  was shot in the Ijebu-Igbo area of Ogun State last year.

Speaking about the movie project, the lecturer in charge, Phebean Agholor, highlighted that the production was important in building the skills and knowledge of students who have an interest in filmmaking.

“I believe that this movie brought out the best in the students. The practical aspect of film production is very important. It is not a course to be taken in theory only. The process stretched the students financially, mentally, emotionally, and physically. I can boldly say that in the process of this production, we now have students who are interested in various aspects of filmmaking ( directing, acting, make-up, editing, lights, set design, camera, etc). They have handled cameras, and go through the rigorous process of filmmaking and I believe the knowledge gotten will stay with them forever compared to textbook teaching,” she said.

Meanwhile, coordinator of the project, Adeniyi Oluwafunmilola, who also spoke to Campus Life noted that despite the success of the movie, there were a few challenges.

“ We encountered a few challenges, which included lack of finance and sponsorship and also insufficient equipment,” she added.
