  • Chidinma denies discussing Super TV CEO’s death with co-defendant

Chidinma denies discussing Super TV CEO’s death with co-defendant

Former University of Lagos student, Chidinma Ojukwu, yesterday told the Lagos State High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square that she never discussed the death of Super TV Chief Executive Officer, Michael Usifo Ataga, with her co-defendant, Adedapo Quadri.

Ojukwu, a former 300-level Mass Communication student, made the denial during cross-examination by Quadri’s counsel, Babatunde Busari, insisting that her only dealings with the second defendant were limited to the supply of Loud (a form of cannabis) and Rohypnol, as well as assistance in producing her school identity card.

“I never had any discussion with Adedapo Quadri about the death of Mr. Ataga. The only transactions we had were for the supply of Loud and Rohypnol. He also helped me produce my school ID card,” Ojukwu told the court.

Ojukwu and Quadri are standing trial alongside a third defendant, Chioma Egbuchu, on a nine-count charge bordering on conspiracy, murder, and stealing, filed by the Lagos State Government. While Ojukwu and Quadri face eight counts related to the murder and stabbing of Ataga, Egbuchu is charged with stealing his iPhone 7.

The defendants were arraigned on October 12, 2021, over the alleged murder of Ataga, who was found dead on June 15, 2021, at a short-let apartment located at 19 Adewale Oshin Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

During the resumed hearing, Ojukwu maintained that Quadri was unaware of her activities with Ataga at the apartment.

“Quadri didn’t know anything that happened between me and Mr. Ataga at the apartment,” she said.

“He never visited me there throughout my stay. I only called him to supply Loud and Rohypnol after Mr. Ataga said he had just one stick of Loud left.”

Ojukwu admitted taking a brown envelope from the apartment when she left, explaining that it contained personal documents belonging to Ataga and one Mary Johnson.

“I took the brown envelope when I was leaving the apartment,” she said, identifying its contents as Ataga’s driver’s licence, ID card, office complimentary cards, Access Bank statement, and an international passport belonging to Mary Johnson.

She told the court that she informed the police during interrogation at her Yaba residence that she had taken the envelope by mistake.

“When the police came to my house at 57 Akinwunmi Street, Alagomeji, Yaba, I told DSP Olusegun Bamidele that I mistakenly took the envelope home,” she testified.

Ojukwu further clarified that she obtained her own international passport by herself, while another person not Quadri assisted her in getting her driver’s licence and other documents.

Earlier, prosecution counsel Yusuf Sule announced his appearance, while Onwuka Egwu represented Ojukwu and M.A. Abiabasi appeared for Egbuchu.

Egwu reminded the court of his earlier request to tender certain letters which the prosecution had objected to. He said he had written to the prosecution on October 29, 2021, requesting the production of items released on bond to the nominal complainant. Sule, however, denied knowledge of such correspondence.

After hearing both parties, Justice Yetunde Adesanya directed Egwu to tender the letters. The court admitted four letters in evidence, including one dated October 29, 2021, addressed to the Director of Public Prosecutions and acknowledged by the office.

“The letter is properly before the court and is therefore admissible in evidence,” Justice Adesanya ruled.

The court also admitted letters addressed to the Ministry of Justice, the Attorney-General of Lagos State, and the Inspector-General of Police, as well as Ojukwu’s handwritten letter appointing Egwu as her counsel.

Overruling the prosecution’s objection, the judge held: “The maker of this document is relevant, and the relevance is therefore as relevant as relevance can be. The objection is overruled, and I so hold.”

Following the ruling, Egwu tendered an iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone X, and a MacBook Pro through Ojukwu. The defendant identified the devices, saying the iPhone 7 Plus belonged to her sister, while the other gadgets were hers.

“The iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone X, and the silver 2019 MacBook Pro are mine. I sold the MacBook to a vendor,” she said.

Justice Adesanya adjourned the case to November 6, 2025, for the continuation of trial.

•Suspends three officers for gross misconduct

The Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun Corps, has arrested a 29-year-old man, Ogunbemi Adebayo, alleged to be an informant for bandits terrorising and kidnapping residents across the state.

Adebayo was among four suspects paraded before journalists yesterday at the Corps’ headquarters in Akure, the state capital.

Parading the suspects, State Commander of Amotekun, Adetunji Adeleye, said that Adebayo allegedly confessed to volunteering as an informant for kidnappers operating around the Ago Dada Camp in Akure North Local Government Area.

According to Adeleye, the suspect underwent training on firearm handling, including the use of AK-47 rifles, conducted by bandits at the Ademekun farmland in Ago Dada before his arrest.

Adeleye said three Amotekun officers – Abu Taiwo, Akinsipe Victor, and Akinjumi Julius – had been suspended for alleged gross misconduct and breach of the Corps’ operational. ethics.

“The three of them have been reprimanded and declared wanted. They acted in isolation, and the Corps remains solid and focused on its mandate. We will not allow the actions of a few individuals to tarnish our image.

“We are certain they are being sponsored, but due process will prevail. If they are innocent, it will be clear to everyone,” he added.

“Adebayo confessed voluntarily that he served as an informant to kidnappers operating around Ademekun power line at Ago Dada Camp.

“He told us he was recruited a few months ago, thinking it was for a harmless purpose, until he was taken to Ademekun farmland where he was trained by Fulani men on how to use an AK-47.

“He had been working with them until he was apprehended through a joint operation involving the Civil Defence, Amotekun, the regent, and residents of Ademekun village,” he said.

The Amotekun commander also revealed the arrest of Nasiru Suleiman, accused of vandalising government-owned caterpillars and heavy-duty equipment parked at a government yard along the Akure-Ondo road.

Adeleye said the Corps recovered several stolen items and heavy engines from Suleiman, noting that his gang – still at large – had stripped several machines down to carcasses.

“They had completely vandalised a number of caterpillars and were dismantling the third one when our men caught them,” he said.

Similarly, the Corps apprehended Saliu Nureni and Ahmed Oladimeji for alleged armed robbery around the NEPA Market in Akure.

The suspects were said to have set ablaze a property belonging to one of their victims and carted away a generating set at Igoba, in the state capital.

NDLEA maintains presence at Proxy night club after drug raid

Days after operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) stormed Proxy Night Club in Victoria Island, Lagos, arresting over 100 persons during an alleged drug party, the once-bustling area now wears an unusual calm.

A visit to the club’s location at 7, Akin Adesola Street, flanked by W-Motors Jetour, Sims Digital Centre, and Suzuki CFAO Mobility Motors, revealed NDLEA officials still stationed at the premises. The road leading to the club, which was previously lively with nightlife activities, was notably quiet.

During the visit, security personnel at Sims Digital Centre and Suzuki CFAO Mobility Motors declined comments, saying they were unaware of the ongoing situation inside the club.

However, a security guard at W-Motors Jetour, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described their relationship with Proxy as “strictly business.”

“We usually park our cars for display at the front of their gate. It’s a club, and different people come there. It’s difficult to know if something illegal was going on because they were just running their business like us,” he said.

A vulcanizer in the area, Segun, told The Nation that he was not around when NDLEA operatives raided the club but confirmed noticing increased movement around the premises before the incident.

“There have been many young people coming and going every day,” he said.

According to Joshua, who works within the area, said activities at the club often drew different crowds, especially on its operational days.

“Proxy has always been like this. They open about four times a week. You will see different people coming in with drinks—sometimes wrapped up. It’s always been quiet, though,” he noted.

Yesterday, NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi had earlier confirmed that the raid followed credible intelligence on a planned drug party at the club. According to him, operatives infiltrated the event around 11 p.m. on Saturday, October 25, and disrupted the gathering at about 3 a.m. the following day.

He added that cartons of illicit substances, including Loud (a potent strain of cannabis) and nitrous oxide (commonly known as laughing gas), were recovered from the venue, while all arrested persons are currently being profiled and screened in custody.

Court sentence siblings, house help to death for robbing woman, 87

An Ekiti High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti, yesterday, sentenced two brothers and their female friend to death by hanging for robbing an 87-year-old woman of N147,000 and a watch.

The convicts, Shadrack Apos, 30, Lucky Akpos, 33, and a house help, Precious Adunola, 24 were arraigned before Justice Lekan Ogunmoye, on August 19, 2024, on two counts of conspiracy and armed robbery.

The prosecution counsel, Kunle-Shina Adeyemo, told the court that the convicts committed the offences on June 12, 2024, at Ifaki Ekiti, while armed with a gun and wooden plank to rob Madam Victoria Folorunso of N147,000 and a wristwatch.

In her testimony during the trial, Madam Folorunso said: “I was sleeping around 1am, when I suddenly saw two persons in my room. One pointed a gun at my forehead while the second person held a plank; they asked me to bring all the money I had in the house. They took the N100,000 I had under my bed and another N47,000 I kept in my underwear. They also took my wristwatch, presented to me by my children. They also took my phone, but they returned it to me.

“When they threatened to shoot me, I told them I have N3 million in my account. They instructed me to withdraw the money the following day and give to Preciuos Adunola, my house help, to deliver it to them.

“They were not masked, they did not break the door and were relating freely with my house help. They warned me not to tell anybody or else they would kidnap and kill me. They were calling and threatening me thereafter, for taking too long to send the money. I later informed my children about it and they told the police,” she concluded.

Adeyemo called two witnesses and tendered defendant’s statements, search warrant, wooden gun among others as exhibits.

While the defendants, represented by their lawyers, Oluwatoyin Marcus and Mitchel Aribisala, called one witness each.

Delivering his judgment, Justice Ogunmoye said: “my earlier findings that the 3rd defendant, Adunola Precious must have opened the door to enable the robbers have seamless entry into the house she was sharing with the victim aptly demonstrated her own pivotal role in the plan to rob the victim.

“From the believable evidence before the court therefore, it is clear that the prosecution had been able to establish that the defendants planned and agreed to rob the victim on June 12, 2024.

“The charge of conspiracy and armed robbery has therefore been proved beyond reasonable doubt against the defendants and therefore they are found guilty and convicted as charged by this court.

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd defendant are to be hanged by the neck until they are dead. May God have mercy on their souls,”  the Judge pronounced.
