NDLEA maintains presence at Proxy night club after drug raid

Days after operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) stormed Proxy Night Club in Victoria Island, Lagos, arresting over 100 persons during an alleged drug party, the once-bustling area wears an unusual calm.

A visit to the club’s location at 7 Akin Adesola Street, flanked by W-Motors Jetour, Sims Digital Centre, and Suzuki CFAO Mobility Motors, revealed NDLEA officials still stationed at the premises.

The road leading to the club, which was previously lively with nightlife activities, was notably quiet.

During the visit, security personnel at Sims Digital Centre and Suzuki CFAO Mobility Motors declined comments, saying they were unaware of the ongoing situation inside the club.

However, a security guard at W-Motors Jetour, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described their relationship with Proxy as “strictly business.”

“We usually park our cars for display at the front of their gate. It’s a club, and different people come there. It’s difficult to know if something illegal was going on because they were just running their business like us,” he said.

A vulcanizer in the area, Segun, told The Nation that he was not around when NDLEA operatives raided the club but confirmed noticing increased movement around the premises before the incident.

“There have been many young people coming and going every day,” he said.

According to Joshua, who works within the area, activities at the club often drew different crowds, especially on its operational days.

“Proxy has always been like this. They open about four times a week. You will see different people coming in with drinks—sometimes wrapped up. It’s always been quiet, though,” he noted.

NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi confirmed that the raid followed credible intelligence on a planned drug party at the club. According to him, operatives infiltrated the event around 11 p.m. on Saturday, October 25, and disrupted the gathering at about 3 a.m. the following day.

He added that cartons of illicit substances, including Loud (a potent strain of cannabis) and nitrous oxide (commonly known as laughing gas), were recovered from the venue, while all arrested persons are currently being profiled and screened in custody.

The once-vibrant Proxy Night Club now stands under the watchful eyes of NDLEA officials.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said one person had died while 26 others have been rescued after a two-storey building collapsed at Coast Street, Oyingbo, Lagos, in the early hours of Monday.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed this in Lagos.

Oke-Osanyintolu, who led the coordinated rescue operation, told newsmen the agency received a distress call at 12:11 am. and immediately mobilised emergency responders to the scene.

“Under the watch of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, when we received the distress call, all emergency responders, including members of the Local Emergency Management Committee, moved swiftly to the scene,” he said.

“Our response was not only effective but efficient. We moved strategically and systematically. So far, we have evacuated 21 people to various General Hospitals, and they are receiving adequate treatment.

`In Lagos State, victims of emergencies are treated free of charge and that policy is being implemented right now,” he said.

He added that five other victims were treated on the spot by the LASEMA Ambulance team and discharged after medical attention.

He said that one fatality was recorded and the body had been deposited at the mortuary.

The permanent secretary said that rescue operations were ongoing with precision and coordination to avoid further casualties.

“We have divided the disaster scene into four quadrants. At the inner quadrants, we are using light-duty equipment to avoid additional harm, while at the outer quadrants, we are deploying our heavy-duty equipment.

Oke-Osanyintolu emphasised that the agency was being deliberate in its approach to avoid technical or accidental mortalities.

“It is not that any of our equipment broke down or stopped working; it is part of our strategic operation plan.

“We are working carefully based on information we received from different sources to ensure that no trapped person is endangered by heavy-duty machinery,” he said.

He assured Lagos residents that the state government remained in full control of the situation.

  • Group seeks urgent action to curb moral decay among youths

Group seeks urgent action to curb moral decay among youths

Nigerian policy, civil society, community, and religious leaders have been challenged on the urgent need for action to address the rising moral decay among young Nigerians and the necessity of equipping them with the skills and values needed for effective leadership.

A non-governmental organization, Favour Adetutu Global Impact, said the challenge becomes imperative considering the pervasive moral decay so glaringly on display among the nation’s youth demography which is now eroding family cultural and national values, promoting vices of all forms

The group made the call at the 2025 Rising Leaders Conference, themed “Accelerate,” held during the weekend in Madalla, Suleja, that brought together more than 500 participants, including students from six secondary schools, to inspire a new generation of visionary leaders capable of driving positive change in their communities.

The conference, according to the convener and Executive Director of Favour Adetutu Global Impact, Favour Adetutu, was conceived to counter the erosion of moral values and provide young people with the tools to lead with purpose and integrity.

Noting that transformation is not just the government’s responsibility but begins with individuals who understand their role in nation-building, Adetutu said, “Transformation is not just the government’s job, it begins with individuals who understand their role in nation-building”.

He said the interest in the young Nigerians begins with sustained investment in their development.

“Investing in young people was crucial, as over 70 percent of Nigeria’s population consists of youth.

“If a teenager gets it right in secondary school, they will get it right in their career and in life,” he added, urging participants to move beyond complacency and push toward greater achievements.

According to him, the need to counter moral decay and prepare young people to lead effectively formed the central motivation that cannot be overemphasized.

The Keynote speaker, Temitope Famoroti, in his presentation, ACCELERATE, provided a roadmap that emphasized essential leadership traits, aspiration, concentration, consecration, execution, liberation, education, responsibility, articulation, tenacity, and excellence.

Echenim Chidinma, the Chief Executive Officer of Paywithkiakia, who led a business and entrepreneurship session, mentored the participants on how to turn ideas into enterprises.

He challenged the youth to embrace innovation instead of resorting to negative behaviours such as internet fraud, noting that dreaming big and starting small is how nations are built.

An Educationist, Samuel Adeleke said the event could not have come at a better time, noting, “Many young people today are searching for guidance. The theme ‘Accelerate’ captures the urgency to move forward despite challenges. The conference gave them direction”.

Participants described the conference as eye-opening and impactful, “Every session had something meaningful to offer. The chant, ‘I accelerate with purpose,’ will keep ringing in our heads,” Daniel Kayode, a student participant said.

Adetutu, while reaffirming the organization’s commitment to building a generation of purpose-driven leaders, said, “We are committed to raising leaders who will transform society. This is just the beginning.”

Drunk driver dies in lone crash near Alaka Bridge

A motorist lost his life late Saturday night after his vehicle somersaulted several times near the Alaka Bridge in Surulere, Lagos, in what authorities have described as a drunk-driving incident.

The tragic crash occurred around 11:45 p.m. on October 25, when the driver of a Navy Blue Toyota Camry marked EKY 311 GK reportedly lost control of the speeding vehicle while heading towards Iponri. The car veered off the road and overturned repeatedly, killing the driver instantly.

Officials of the newly inaugurated Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) 24-hour Night Operations Squad, stationed within the Surulere axis, responded swiftly to the scene. The team promptly secured and cordoned off the area to prevent secondary accidents and alerted officers from the Bode Thomas Police Division, who conducted a full investigation and documentation.

According to LASTMA’s preliminary findings, eyewitness accounts and forensic evidence indicated that the deceased had been driving under the influence of alcohol, which severely impaired his judgment and reaction time.

The police later released the body of the deceased to his wife and family members, who were contacted through his mobile phone retrieved from the wreckage.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family, describing the crash as “a tragic yet sobering reminder of the fatal consequences of intoxicated driving.”

He urged motorists to remain vigilant and responsible, particularly during the Ember Months, a period often associated with increased vehicular movement and heightened crash risks.

Bakare-Oki emphasized that one of the key resolutions of the recently concluded ‘LASTMA Ember Months Stakeholders’ Forum’ was the intensified campaign against drunk driving — a menace he said continues to claim innocent lives across Lagos and beyond.

  • Officers arrested as suspect dies during interrogation

Officers arrested as suspect dies during interrogation

Some residents in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State have the death of a middle aged man, Wisdom Akobundu, in police custody.

The Nation learnt that in an attempt to stop the angry youths from gaining entry into the police station, the police personnel resorted to shooting sporadically into the air to scare the youths away.

This forced some shop owners around the area to close abruptly.

Commissioner of Police (CP), Danladi Isa, while sympathising with the Bende people over the unfortunate incident, said that the policemen involved in the act have been arrested and handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Umuahia.

CP Isa stated that the command would charge those found culpable to the court as soon as investigation was concluded.

Chairman of Bende Local Government Area, Deacon Uwabunkonye Bassey, expressed deep shock and sadness over the death of Akobundu.

One of the protesters who spoke to journalists alleged that the deceased, Akobundu, was invited for questioning by a yet-to-be identified policeman over a case involving theft of property.

According to the source who pleaded anonymous, Akobundu was accused of buying stolen property from scavengers.

It was learnt that Akobundu slumped after the police team brutalised him during interrogation.

He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, where he was pronounced dead.

The youths trooped to the police station to demand justice for the deceased.

An elder brother of the deceased, Okorie Festus, expressed “deep pain and anger over the cruel and conspired death of my brother in police custody.

“Evans Onyeka, a police officer, invited my brother to the Bende Police Station and he went there alive, strong, and without trouble. Hours later, we were told he was dead.

“Let it be known: the story being circulated by the police is false. My brother had never been involved in any police case or admitted to any hospital before this tragedy.

“I was called and told my brother was in police custody, but before I got there, they had already taken him to the hospital without any notice to me or any member of our family.

“More painfully, from what we’ve gathered and seen, the whole scene clearly shows that my brother, Ako, died right inside the police station before they hurriedly went to get a bus to take him to the hospital. Any attempt to twist or hide this story will not stand.

“Officers Evans and Austin, who served in Bende for long and know both of us, very well, were there. Yet, they never called me or any of my family members. That silence is suspicious.

“We demand answers. The DPO, DCO, Inspector Evans, Austin, and every officer on duty that day must tell us what killed Ako my brother, my blood, a peaceful and responsible young man. They should not cover this. The truth must come out, and justice must be served.”
