Expectant woman, nine others die in Ondo fatal crash

A tragic accident in Akungba Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State, claimed the lives of ten people on Wednesday night, including an expectant woman.

The accident occurred near the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), when a Dangote Cement truck reportedly lost control and veered off its lane, ploughing into bystanders along the roadside.

The Nation report that the incident, which took place near the Holy Trinity Church, has plunged the university community and residents into mourning.

Eyewitnesses said the truck, coming from Obajana in Kogi State, allegedly broke through a barricade erected to prevent articulated vehicles from accessing the university road – a measure initially implemented to prevent such tragedies.

“The trailer came from the top of the hill. It’s unclear if the barricade was opened or if it was forcefully broken. At least 10 people were killed, and we’re unsure how many more might still be under the truck,” an eyewitnesses said.

It was gathered that emergency responders and security operatives rushed to the scene to rescue survivors and recover bodies trapped under the vehicle.

President of the AAUA Students’ Union Government (SUG), Salami Olugbon, described the accident as “unfortunate” and expressed frustration over repeated warnings about the dangers of allowing trucks access through the area.

“No student died in the incident, but it’s disheartening that this happened due to the negligence of some individuals responsible for managing the barricades. There’s been ongoing sabotage from some locals,” Olugbon said.

“The Dangote truck, reportedly suffering brake failure, broke through the permanent barricade erected at the university’s main gate. This is a painful reminder of why we have long called for articulated vehicles to stop plying Akungba roads,” he added.

He urged students to remain calm and avoid the highway for now, assuring that the union will continue to work to ensure the safety of the student community.

Confirming the crash, Ondo State FRSC Sector Commander, Samuel Ibitoye, said eight deaths had been officially recorded so far – five males, two females, and a male child.

“The truck, which was loaded with cement, lost control and rammed into pedestrians. It was a result of the driver’s recklessness,” Ibitoye said.

The road where the incident occurred had previously been modified with barricades under the administration of the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, following a series of deadly accidents involving heavy-duty trucks in the area.

PDP chieftain arraigned for alleged rape of minor

Ex-Kwara State People’s Democratic Party (PDP) local government chairmanship candidate in the 2024 council election, Musbau Esinrogunjo, yesterday appeared before an Ilorin state High Court for alleged rape of a minor.

An online publication had last month accused the PDP chieftain of alleged sexual molestation of 15-year-old Aishat Kamardeen.

But, the alleged victim and parents had stoutly denied the allegations.

Kwara State Government had dragged the politician before the court for allegedly having unlawful sexual intercourse with one Aishat.

Defence Counsel, Joseph Bamgboye (SAN) initially opposed his arraignment before the intervention of the court.

Consequently, his plea was not taken after all.

Leading the prosecution, Kwara State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Ayoola Akande, prayed for proper arraignment of the accused, but the senior advocate of Nigeria challenged the competency of the arraignment.

Akande told the court that “the matter is for arraignment. We humbly apply that the charge be read to the defendant.”

The one-count charge of allegation of rape and unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor was read to him.

DPP argued that the accused “is already before the court and he has not been granted bail.”

But the defence counsel informed the court that the Department of State Service (DSS) has granted him bail since July 2025.

“He has not breached the terms of the bail. He is not at large. There is still a bail on his neck,” he said.

Reacting, Ayoola said that “you cannot consider the issue of bail either written or oral until after proper arraignment”.

Presiding Judge Funso Dada Lawal allowed the arraignment of the defendant but deferred the plea taking to the next adjourned date.

Justice Lawal subsequently adjourned the case to November 13 for hearing of the defendant application and plea taking, in line with section 228 of the Kwara state Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).

18-year-old battles liver failure after misdiagnosis, seeks financial assistance

An 18-year-old apprentice, Micheal Soetan, is appealing to well-meaning Nigerians for financial assistance to undergo treatment for liver failure — a life-threatening condition he has been battling since 2021 following a medical misdiagnosis.

Micheal’s ordeal began four years ago when he was wrongly diagnosed with appendicitis at a private hospital.

“It all started in 2021 when I was diagnosed with appendicitis, but it later turned out that I was misdiagnosed,” he recounted tearfully.

Four months after the surgery, his health began to deteriorate. His body and eyes became swollen and yellowish, prompting further medical consultations.

“I started having severe stomach pain. Despite several hospital visits and medications, there was no relief until my mother took me to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). That was where I was told my liver had been infected,” he explained.

Further tests at LASUTH confirmed that Micheal’s liver had failed.

“The doctors said I needed urgent surgery, but they warned that another operation could worsen my condition due to my previous surgery,” he said.

Once a vibrant young man, Micheal now struggles daily with severe swelling and discoloration.

His mother, who sells roasted ponmo (cow skin), has exhausted her savings and borrowed heavily in a desperate effort to save her son’s life.

“My mother has tried all she could. We’ve spent over ₦4 million so far. She took loans and sold what she could, but we’ve run out of options,” Micheal lamented.

Currently, his doctors have placed him on weekly medication costing about ₦160,000. However, due to financial constraints, he has missed several doses, leading to further complications.

Micheal is appealing to members of the public for urgent financial support to continue his treatment and restore his health.

Yuletide: LASTMA begins 24/7 operations Thursday

The Special Adviser to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, says the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will provide 24/7 support on major corridors during the Ember months.

Giwa disclosed this at LASTMA Ember Months Stakeholders Forum held on Tuesday in Lagos.

The forum had the theme:, “Safer Roads, Safe Lives… LASTMA Cares.

Giwa noted that the Night Rapid Response Gang of LASTMA were inaugurated with the task to respond swiftly to breakdowns, crashes, and obstructions ensuring minimal disruption to traffic flow.

“We have made provisions that from Oct. 23, LASTMA will be doing 24-hour traffic operations for all our roads, especially those areas that will have high flux of people due to end of the year traffic.

“This is not the first time we are doing this, we did it last year in December but this year, as a proactive government we are starting early in October to run till January,” he said.

He said for 2025 Ember months, LASTMA would  adopt other multi-layered operational plans to ensure safe mobility across all five divisions across Lagos.

Giwa expressed plans to include advocacy and public sensitisation, input enforcement which had to do with compliance enforcement, e-enforcement, enhanced field deployment, and inter-agency collaboration.

He said the flag off of another Ember Month campaign reaffirmed the shared commitment to a safer, saner, and smarter Lagos.

“Every resident deserves a city where movement is safe, predictable, and efficient,” he said.

Giwa said data showed that by managing congestion and preventing gridlock, a single LASTMA officer helped to save an average of ₦85 million in man-hour losses annually.

“When multiplied by our total strength, this translates to over ₦430 billion in economic value every year, a contribution that directly supports Lagos’ Gross Domestic Product of about ₦41 trillion and sustains productivity across commerce, logistics, and mobility.

“Our officers are not just traffic managers; they are economic stabilisers, frontline ambassadors of order, and protectors of human lives,” he said.

Also speaking, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the authority was well prepared for the 24-hour operations.

“It is not a new thing for us, we did it last year but we want to start in October. We should be able to do the needful because all arrangements are in place.

“We have deployed enough personnel and our recovery vehicles to ensure we respond to any emergency on the road,” he said.

Bakare-Oki said they would also embark on advocacy programmes and are available on all social media handles to sensitise Lagos residents.

“Today, we saw children from both government and private schools display for us.

“This is a good mechanism to reach out to their parents and this will equally prepare them for the future for them to respect traffic rules and regulations,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that stakeholders present at the forum include the Nigerian Army, Police, the Federal Road Safety Corps, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, the National Union of Road Transport Workers, schoolchildren and others.

  • ASNAT urges members to shun Sowore-led protest

ASNAT urges members to shun Sowore-led protest

The Association of Nigerian Artisans and Technicians (ASNAT) has called on all its members nationwide to remain law-abiding and to shun any form of ill-informed and politically motivated protests being championed by Omoyele Sowore and other unscrupulous elements masquerading as freedom fighters.

This call was contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by the National Coordinator of ASNAT, Comrade Adeshina Akinyemi, in reaction to the failed mass protest allegedly aimed at forcing the release of the proscribed IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, from detention.

Comrade Akinyemi noted that while every Nigerian has the constitutional right to freely express opinions and demonstrate peacefully, such rights must not infringe upon the rights of other citizens to go about their lawful businesses without harassment or obstruction.

He reminded ASNAT members of the critical role their services play in the daily survival, comfort, and economic well-being of Nigerians, urging them to remain focused on their legitimate trades and ignore any incitement by misguided politicians seeking to sow chaos under the guise of activism.

The statement further emphasized that while the association sympathizes with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his family, the law must be allowed to take its full course, especially as the matter is already before a competent court of jurisdiction.

Comrade Akinyemi reiterated ASNAT’s commitment to national peace, stability, and economic progress, warning that no genuine national interest is served through violence or civil disorder.

“We call on all our members across the federation to remain calm, law-abiding, and continue contributing their quota to the development of our great nation. The Association will not be part of any politically motivated attempt to destabilize Nigeria,”

‘The bad experience of the #EndSARS protest that nearly turned this country upside down; the agony and pains it inflicted on our members across the country is still fresh in our hearts. I therefore appeal to all Nigerian Artisans and Technicians to shun any form of participation either through physical presence or sharing of any incited message on social media.
