  • Police arrest IBBU student over alleged cybercrimes against Bago

Police arrest IBBU student over alleged cybercrimes against Bago

The Niger Police Command has arrested Abubakar Isah Mokwa, a 29-year-old postgraduate student at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University of Agriculture and Mechanic (IBBUL) in Lapai, on allegations of cyberbullying, cyberstalking and other cybercrime-related offenses, following a formal complaint reportedly instigated by Governor Umaru Bago.

The arrest, which took place at Mokwa’s residence in Lapai around 11:00 pm. on Thursday has sparked widespread controversy, with critics alleging it is a targeted move to suppress dissent.

Mokwa, a known social media critic of Bago’s administration and popularly referred to as “Sen Isah Mokwa,” was detained by operatives from the Lapai Divisional Police Headquarters and subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the command headquarters in Minna for further investigation, according to SP Wasiu Abiodun, the Police Public Relations Officer for Niger State Command.

Abiodun confirmed the arrest in a statement on October 24, stating that Mokwa remains in custody pending further developments, which will be communicated to the public in due course.

According to sources close to the case, including a lawyer representing Mokwa’s family, the Niger State government, under Bago’s directive, had ordered police to file charges of terrorism and cybercrime against Mokwa, specifically citing his use of the satirical nickname “Governor Amunike” to criticize the governor.

The moniker, a reference to former footballer Emmanuel Amunike, is often used to mock politicians perceived as making unfulfilled promises.

Mokwa is expected to face formal charges of cyberbullying next week, though he remains in detention as of Saturday, October 25, 2025.

The complaint, lodged by representatives of the State Government, stems from Mokwa’s social media posts, including a Facebook entry six days before his arrest, where he listed grievances against Bago’s administration.

These included ongoing banditry in Zones B and C, unpaid pensions, inadequate aid for flood victims in Mokwa, unfulfilled scholarship promises, high fees (N360,000 per session) at a new state university, underfunding of IBBUL with “zero infrastructure,” and the abandonment of the IBB Teaching Hospital after its relocation to Minna.

While acknowledging some progress on road and bridge projects, Mokwa criticised their slow pace and incomplete status.

Hours before his arrest, Mokwa expressed concerns for his safety, alleging that two officers from the Lapai division had visited his student lodge earlier that evening and inquired about his whereabouts from his roommate, identified as Dula.

In a statement with reporters, he declared: “There has been a suspicious move by two Lapai division police officers this evening at my lodge. If before tomorrow anything happens, Dula knows the policemen who came. Tell the world I only stand for the truth and nothing but the truth, and I will never back down on that.”

Mokwa’s supporters, family, and human rights advocates have condemned the arrest as an attack on free speech, situating it within a broader pattern of alleged government crackdowns on dissent in Niger State.

Farouk Mokwa, identifying himself as the suspect’s brother, posted on X that the detention lacked evidence and accused the Lapai Divisional Police Officer of acting on orders without due process, “When individuals that choose not to be swayed by the ineptitudes of the government are being picked and bundled like criminals, what hope is left for the future of opposition?” he wrote, rallying support under the hashtag #FreeSenIsahMokwa.

A family lawyer confirmed the arrest, noting the case is bailable but expressing concern over Mokwa’s continued detention.

As of Saturday morning, Niger State government officials had not responded to requests for comment on the allegations or the arrest.

Police authorities reiterated that the investigation is ongoing, with no formal charges filed as of the latest updates.

Mokwa’s supporters continue to mobilise online under #FreeSenIsahMokwa, warning that the case signals a troubling clampdown on democratic freedoms in Niger State.

Sanwo-Olu said this during a courtesy visit by the Deputy Minister of International Relations of the Republic of South Africa, Thandi Moraka, on Thursday, in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The governor was represented by his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat.

He said Africans would be doing disservice to their people if they failed to work together.

we are tied together and would be doing a total disservice to our people if we don’t work together as one.

The governor noted that the world was witnessing a trend of regional integration, with Europe and Asia uniting to advance their interests.

“Therefore, as Africans we really have no choice than to work together because this is the place where everything happens,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu also stressed that Africans must take charge of their development and not rely on others to do it for them.

He noted that African businesses were already working together, citing examples of South African companies such as ShopRite, MTN, and Multi-Choice that had invested in Nigeria.

“Our people are already working together. So, it’s for us as governments to make sure that we help our people to work seamlessly,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu acknowledged that there would be challenges, but emphasised that Africans must come together and work towards a common goal.

“We cannot continue to see ourselves as different people, we should be united as one people irrespective of our different cultures and beliefs,” he said.

The governor expressed optimism that the visit would lead to meaningful collaboration between Lagos State and South Africa, with both parties working together to build their economies and uplift their people.

He called for a relationship built on mutual respect and openness, with both parties working together to promote trade and investment between Lagos State and South Africa.

“Let us have a relationship that is actually very solid, and built on mutual respect for each other, and that we can uplift our people as Africans,” he said.

The Deputy Minister of International Relations of the Republic of South Africa, Moraka, said the aim of the visit was to strengthen the historic ties between South Africa and Nigeria and explore opportunities for economic cooperation.

According to her, the visit was a follow-up to the successful South Africa-Nigeria Binational Commission held in South Africa in 2024, which resulted in the finalisation of an Endorsement Warning Mechanism.

“This framework will enhance areas of collaboration and protect businesses in both countries,” she said.

Moraka expressed her excitement about the potential for economic cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the creative industry space.

“We do have a new genre called Amapiano, which is taking the world by the storm. And we are also looking forward to collaborating with yourselves as you are the half of the Afrobeats,” she said.

The Deputy Minister said her engagements in Lagos would focus on exploring opportunities for collaboration and investment in the telecommunication, financial, and creative industry spaces.

She also acknowledged the efforts of the various business chambers in both countries in promoting mutual investment and job creation opportunities.

Moraka emphasised the importance of strengthening bilateral relations between South Africa and Nigeria, citing their shared vision for a peaceful and prosperous integrated Africa.

“We have a common vision and we want to work together towards peaceful and prosperous integrated Africa that we all want.

Angry residents block highways in Ondo community

Tension has enveloped Akungba-Akoko in Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State following the tragic death of eight persons in a truck accident on Wednesday night.

The incident, which occurred opposite the popular Anglican Church, has thrown the entire community into mourning as residents lamented the recurring cases of fatal truck crashes in the town.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened when the driver of a truck reportedly lost control and veered off his lane, ramming into bystanders along the roadside near Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA).

It was gathered that a pregnant woman and a 200-level undergraduate student of the university were among those who died in the crash.

Emergency responders and security operatives were said to have raced to the scene to rescue survivors and recover bodies trapped beneath the vehicle.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state had confirmed that eight persons died in the accident.

In a statement, the Sector Commander, Mr. Samuel Ibitoye, said the victims comprised five males, two females, and a male child.

“Eight people were involved – five males, two females, and one male child. The truck ran into a barricade in front of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko,” he stated.

  • Court rejects ‘terrorists’ negotiator’ Tukur’s third bail application

Court rejects ‘terrorists’ negotiator’ Tukur’s third bail application

    • DSS’ investigator accuses defendant of betrayal

A Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected a fresh application for bail filed by detained alleged terrorists’ negotiator, Tukur Mohammed Mamu.

Justice Mohammed Umar, in a ruling yesterday, noted the health complaint made by Mamu and held that the detaining authority, the Department of State Services (DSS) should not release him, but take him to an appropriate health facility where he would be adequately attended to.

Justice Umar noted that, by the history of the case so far, the prosecution has exhibited diligence in its handling of the case and has exhibited diligence in prosecuting the case.

The judge said one of the reasons for granting bail is where the prosecution is not diligent, noting that since the prosecution in this case is diligent, the application for bail cannot be granted.

He subsequently ordered that the defence lawyer should choose the health facility comfortable to the defendant, to which he should be promptly taken.

He also asked the DSS to allow the defendant access to members of his family.

The ruling is the third time the court will reject his application for bail since his was arraigned on March 21, 2023 by the Federal Government on a 10-count charge bordering on terrorism financing, among others.

Mamu was arrested on September 7, 2022 by Egyptian security officials at the Cairo International Airport, on reasonable suspicion of financing Boko Haram terrorism activities.

He was alleged to have convinced the terrorists to discuss ransom payments with individual families of the hostages of the train attack instead of the Chief of Defense Staff Committee set up by the Federal Government for his personal financial gain.

He was said to have been nominated by the terrorists that attacked the Abuja-Kaduna bound train sometime in March 2022 which took scores of persons hostage.

Mamu was alleged to have collected ransoms on behalf of the Boko Haram terrorists from families of hostages, confirmed the amount and facilitated the delivery of same to the terrorists.

After the ruling, a witness called by the prosecution, an Investigator with the DSS, whose identity was shielded, told the court how the committee set up by the Federal Government to negotiate the release of the Abuja-Kaduna train attack hostages in 2022 was allegedly betrayed by Mr Tukur Mamu.

The DSS operative, who was led in evidence by the prosecuting lawyer, David Kaswe, said: “In 2022, March 28 to be precised, the Kaduna-bound train was attacked enroute to Kaduna. Several persons were killed and others were injured and over 60 people were taken into the bush as hostages. Thereafter, a committee which was already in existence, handling a similar cases of abduction, with government support was mandated to also explore measures for the release of the hostages. The committee was supervised by then Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Lucky Irabor (rtd.). The committee established communication with the terrorists on the possibility of securing the release of the kidnapped hostages. And the terrorists made some demands which include the release of members of their families who were in custody of government detention facilities in exchange for the release of the hostages,” he said.

The witness said while that was in progress, the terrorists consulted with some of the hostages in their custody and recommended names of persons who they felt could negotiate on their behalf with the government.

“Names were suggested and the suggested names were forwarded to the people suggested, seeking their willingness to accept in the negotiation on behalf of the terrorist group

“All those that were contacted declined to take the offer except the defendant who offered himself to negotiate on behalf of the terrorists group with the government.

“Thereafter, as earlier stated, window of communication was already established between the government recognised committee and the terrorists.

“So when the defendant came onboard, communication was taken place on multiple fronts at the same time, that is apart from the committee.”

According to him, after sometime, the defendant (Mamu) expressed his dissatisfaction with the arrangement where communication was taking place on multiple fronts.

“The defendant, having been accepted to negotiate on their behalf with government, suggested or advised the terrorists to appoint a single interlocutor or negotiator,” he said.

The witness said Mamu then became the only negotiator between the terror group and the government committee.

“So when the defendant emerged as sole interlocutor between the terrorists group and government, attempts by the committee members to reach out to the terrorists became a challenge, because they do not want to reach out to the committee anymore except through the defendant.

“Subsequently in order to continue with the government’s assignment, the committee now continues to recognise the defendant,” he said.

  • I will not negotiate with bandits, says Bago

I will not negotiate with bandits, says Bago

Negotiation with bandits will only emboldened the criminals and worsen in the state, Niger State Governor, Umaru Mohammed Bago, stated this as he declared that he will never negotiate with bandits or pay ransom for kidnapped victims.

The governor called on the people in affected communities where bandits frequent to stand up and defend themselves in order to stop the activities of the bandits.

Speaking during a condolence visit to the people of Rijau and Magama Local Government Areas, whose communities were recently attacked by bandits in Kontagora, the governor stated that the situation of insecurity need collective action and resistance.

“I will not negotiate with bandits. I will not pay ransom. The moment we start paying, they will open shop on our heads and keep kidnapping people,” he said.

He added that it is a constitutional duty for the lives and property of the people to be protected by the government, stressing that he is ready to go all out to protect the lives of the people especially as the constitution does not state how far he should go in protecting the people.

“We are surrounded by enemies, but we will not give up. The constitution gives us the right to defend our lives and property, and we will do just that. There is no going back.”

Bago described it as embarrassing and unacceptable that communities could be invaded and their residents turned into internally displaced persons as he announced plans to recruit and train 10,000 members into the Joint Task Force (JTF) to help restore security, with recruitment beginning immediately.

Bago also declared a total ban on mining across the entire Zone C of the state, which covers eight local government areas including Magama, Kontagora, Rijau, Wushishi, Mariga, Borgu, Mashegu, and Agwara.

He said illegal mining had become one of the major drivers of insecurity in the area, with miners often accessing forest zones unharmed while residents suffered repeated attacks ordering the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to arrest anyone caught engaging in mining activities.

“It is suspicious that miners can enter the forests freely, yet the bandits don’t touch them,” he said,

The governor assured victims of recent attacks that his administration would support them as he promised compensation for families of those killed, medical treatment for the injured, and assistance for those who lost their sources of livelihood.
