    Police neutralise bandits, lose five officers in Zamfara

    Zamfara Police Command has confirmed the killing of its five officers in an encounter with armed bandits in Gidan Giye village of Tsafe Local government Area, Zamfara State.

    A statement by the command public relations officer DSP Yazid Abubakar said the officers attached to the Operations Department of the Zamfara State Police Command, led by ASP John Dogara, were on routine patrol along  Gusau–Funtua Federal Highway when the bandits laid ambush on them

    “Before reaching Gidan Giye village in Tsafe Local Government Area, the patrol team was ambushed by a large number of armed bandits. However, the officers bravely engaged the assailants in a fierce gun duel,” DSP Yazid said.

    DSP Yazid Abubakar also confirmed the killing of an unspecified number of armed bandits in the encounter while five of the command officers paid the supreme price.

    “During the exchange, several of the bandits were neutralised while others fled the scene with suspected gunshot wounds. 

    “Tragically, five gallant police officers paid the supreme price in the line of duty,”the statement reads.

    The police public relations officer further said normalcy has been restored to the area and further reinforcement has been deployed to maintain peace and ensure the safety of commuters along the highway.

    Customs officer found dead after lodging with three women

    An Assistant Superintendent of Customs (ASC), Lawal Tukur, has been found dead in a hotel room in Katsina State.

    The incident occurred on Wednesday at Murjani Hotel in Katsina metropolis, where the officer had lodged.

    According to reports by counterinsurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, hotel staff discovered the officer’s lifeless body in his room around 8:30 a.m. and immediately alerted the management and security operatives.

    Sources at the hotel said some empty sachets of suspected substances were found in the wastebasket of the room.

    Three women — Khadija Ali, 34 of Dutsin Amare Quarters, Katsina; Aisha Lawal, 30 of Ingawa Local Government Area; and Hafsat Yusuf, 22 of Brigade Quarters, Kano — were said to have been at the hotel during the incident.

    It was gathered that Khadija and Aisha spent the night with the deceased, while Hafsat visited them later and also lodged in the same hotel.

    The remains of the officer have been deposited at the mortuary of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Katsina, for autopsy.

    NSCDC neutralises two during attempted kidnap of Custom’s officer, wife

    Operatives of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have foiled attempts by kidnappers to abduct a Nigerian Customs Service, (NCS) officer, his wife and residents of a community in Nasarawa state.

    Public Relations Officer of the Corps, Babawale Afolabi, in a statement yesterday, said two of the kidnappers were neutralised, while two others were arrested when they were confronted by NSCDC operatives.

    Afolabi said arms and ammunition were also recovered from the gang who had been operating at the Bukan-Ari area along Kurikyo road in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

    He credited the operations to the NSCDC Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad headed by Commandant Appolos Dandaura.

    “The NSCDC Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed  Audi, upon receiving an intelligence report concerning incessant kidnapping activities in Lafia metropolis and its environs, ordered the CG’s Special Intelligence Squad to launch an aggressive onslaught against the criminal elements terrorizing the area”, Afolabi said.

    Also providing details of the operation, Commandant Dandaura said: “In a five-hour intelligence-based coordinated operation, my men alongside the Nassarawa State Commandant foiled a kidnap attempt on two residents of the Bukan-Ari area along Kurikyo Road in the Lafia metropolis.

    Navy intercepts diesel laden boat in Lagos

    Operatives of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT have seized a boat loaded with approximately 4,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) suspected to have been stolen.

    The AGO was intercepted on October 11, by a patrol team around Takwa Bay, Lagos, the Navy said yesterday.

    According to the Commander NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Paul Nimmyel, the boat was sighted through the Western Regional Control Centre of the Falcon Eye Alignment, adding that the operatives intercepted it around Commodore Pool approaches.

    Nimmyel, who was represented by the Base’s Executive Officer, Captain I Udoessien, said: “The fibre boat, laden with about 4,000 litres of suspected AGO, was intercepted around the approaches to Commodore Pool within the Atlas Cove general area. Upon sighting the naval patrol team, the suspects abandoned the boat and fled.

    “The confiscated product has since been handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Command, represented by Superintendent Amoo Kehinde, for further investigation and necessary action.”

    The Commander warned individuals involved in illegal maritime activities to desist, stressing that NNS BEECROFT remains committed to ensuring the safety and integrity of Nigeria’s maritime domain.

    Army begins disciplinary action against soldier over Ondo driver’s death

    The Nigerian Army has commenced disciplinary action against a soldier accused of causing the death of a commercial bus driver at Akunnu Akoko, in the Akoko North-East Local Government Area of Ondo State.

    The soldier, whose identity has yet to be revealed, allegedly assaulted the driver, who later died at a hospital from injuries sustained during the attack.

    The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday when the commercial driver, travelling from Akure to Abuja, experienced mechanical problems near a military checkpoint in Akunnu.

    According to sources, the passengers demanded a refund of their fare after the vehicle broke down.

    One of them sought assistance from a soldier at the checkpoint, but the military personnel allegedly acted in an “unprofessional and uncouth” manner, leading to a confrontation that turned violent.

    Upon learning of the incident, the headquarters of the 32 Artillery Brigade promptly evacuated the driver to a medical facility and covered his medical expenses.

    The Chairman, Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area, Prince Lanre Sanusi, has denied any involvement in the recent demolition of buildings on 6th Avenue, Festac Town, Lagos.

    Sanusi said the demolition was carried out by the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), which had earlier served notices to the affected property owners. He stated that the FHA presented documents showing it had warned occupants to vacate the area over a year ago due to lack of proper permits and approvals.

    Speaking during an inspection of an ongoing road project on 23rd Road, Sanusi appealed to the FHA to notify the local government ahead of future demolitions to enable dialogue with affected persons.

    “The building that was demolished on 6th Avenue had nothing to do with the local government. The FHA carried it out and we have documents showing they served notices last year.”

    Sanusi, who promised that the 23rd Road project would be completed within four weeks, said the council had also flagged off work at Jakande Estate, Mile 2, and planned to relocate traders at Agboju Market to a safer location. He warned traders operating under high-tension wires and on sidewalks to vacate those areas, saying the government was working to restore order and Festac’s lost glory.

    Train crushes dispatch rider in Lagos

    A train yesterday crushed a dispatch rider at the PWD Railway Level Crossing in Ikeja, Lagos.

    The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the motorcyclist with number plate AGL 179 QR, attempted to cross the railway line despite an approaching train.

    Preliminary investigations revealed that the dispatch rider, who was said to be travelling at high speed, made a failed attempt to beat the oncoming train while trying to access the GRA axis of Ikeja. The impact of the collision proved fatal, as the rider died instantly.

    LASTMA officials, who were the first responders at the scene, immediately cordoned off the area to prevent secondary accidents and ensure free traffic flow. They were later joined by security operatives from the Shogunle Police Division.

    The State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) removed the remains of the deceased.

    LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as “a distressing reminder of the dire consequences of impatience and disregard for traffic safety rules, particularly at railway level crossings.”

    Police arrest eight cult, robbery suspects in Ikorodu raid

    In a major crackdown on criminal activities, operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested eight suspected cultists and armed robbers during a targeted operation in the Odogunyan area of Ikorodu.

    The suspects were apprehended in an early morning raid carried out by the Command’s Bullock Tactical Team on Wednesday, at about 5:30 a.m., following credible intelligence reports about planned criminal activities in the area.

    Those arrested include Fadiya Ayodele, 27, Lawal Rasheed, 28, Akerele Demilare, 27, Alimi Victor, 23, Okiki Alufoge, 25, Nurudeen Dolapo, 25, Agboola Samuel, 25, and Ayolade Victor, 25.

    During the raid, police operatives recovered a Nigerian military camouflage uniform, a battle axe, an assault dagger, several charms, and counterfeit $100 bills amounting to $3,000.

    Trailer container falls on tricycle, kills two in Onitsha

    Two persons died on Thursday in a car accident in Onitsha, Anambra state.

    The crash, which occured around 8:20am, along Owerri-Onitsha road involved a tricycle and a trailer.

    The trailer was said to be conveying a container when it suddenly fell off and landed on the tricycle with the deceased and two others on board.

    A witness, who blamed the crash on deplorable section of the road, said: “The trailer was navigating the bad road when the container suddenly landed on the Keke carrying four passengers.

    “Two were trapped inside the tricycle while the other two were lucky to have escaped unhurt.”

    Confirming the incident, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno expressed sadness over loss of lives in the tragic crash.

    She urged road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic rules to prevent similar occurrences.

    She said, “The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) RS5.31A Upper Iweka Outpost responded to a fatal crash on the Owerri-Onitsha Road at approximately 8:20am today. 

    “The incident involved a Keke (tricycle) and a trailer, resulting in the deaths of two adult males. A total of four adult males were involved in the crash, with two others rescued uninjured.

    “Upon receiving the distress call, the FRSC rescue team was dispatched to the scene, where they collaborated with the Police to secure the area and ensure a smooth flow of traffic. 

    “The victims, who were trapped under the trailer, were taken to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

    “The vehicles involved in the crash were as follows: the Keke (tricycle) was red in color and had no registration number; the trailer also lacked a registration number or any other identifying features.”
