Court shifts DSS N5.5bn defamation suit against SERAP over lawyer’s absence

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja has shifted hearing in a N5.5 billion defamation suit instituted against the Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) by two aggrieved operatives of the Department of the State Service DSS to November 12.

Justice Halilu Yusuf on Thursday, shifted hearing in the suit following the absence of SERAP’s lawyer, Ebun Adegboruwa, SAN, in court.

The two DSS operatives, Sarah John and Gabriel Ogunleye, had filed the action against SERAP on the ground that the organization defamed them with baseless accusations in media publications.

Specifically, the two claimants alleged that SERAP defamed with allegations that they unlawfully invaded their office, thereby putting their reputation, as law abiding security operatives, in jeopardy.

They pleaded with the court to order SERAP to pay them N5.5Bn as compensation for damages they suffered.

The two claimants also applied to the judge to issue order of perpetual injunction against SERAP restraining it from further defaming them.

However, at Thursday’s proceeding, SERAP’s lawyer, Ebun Adegboruwa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, wrote a letter to the court informing it that he would not be able to attend the proceedings.

The senior lawyer claimed that he had a matter at the Court of Appeal in Lagos and pleaded for an adjournment till November 12.

Counsel to the claimant, Akinlolu Kehinde SAN admitted receiving the letter and the apology and did not oppose the request for an adjournment.

Justice Halilu subsequently fixed November 12 for SERAP to defend itself in the defamation suit.

Radda: community-driven peace model restoring calm in Katsina

    • No negotiations with bandits

Governor Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to a community-led approach to peacebuilding, describing it as the most effective strategy in tackling banditry and restoring stability across the state.

Speaking yesterday at the commissioning of 100 new officers of the Community Watch Corps (C-Watch), Radda said the initiative — launched two years ago — has expanded security coverage to 20 of the state’s 34 local government areas and continues to record remarkable success.

He explained that the “Katsina Model” empowers local communities to take the lead in resolving conflicts by initiating and negotiating peace pacts with repentant bandits willing to lay down their arms.

“The Katsina Model is a fully community-driven approach. It allows affected communities to initiate peace talks and reconciliation with repentant bandits.

“The state government’s role is to support, encourage, and maintain law and order in those areas,” the governor said.

Radda stressed that the initiative is not about negotiating with criminals but about enabling communities to rebuild trust and ensure sustainable peace.

“Our focus is to ensure that communities enjoying peace also benefit socio-economically, giving our people a dignified existence,” he added.

The governor cited the successes of the peace accord, noting that Jibia has recorded eight months without a major attack, while Batsari has enjoyed seven months of uninterrupted calm. Similar progress, he said, has been achieved in Danmusa, Safana, Faskari, and Sabuwa local government areas.

He commended the Nigerian Army, Air Force, and Police for their collaboration with the state’s security initiative, which has enhanced intelligence sharing, rapid response, and coordinated field operations.

Radda also praised traditional and religious leaders for their contributions to mediation and community cohesion, describing them as “pillars of the peace process.”

Earlier, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Mu’azu, said the state has witnessed a marked reduction in insecurity under Radda’s leadership.

Major General Junaidu Bindawa (rtd), Chairman of the Standing Committee on the Katsina Community Watch Corps, disclosed that the newly recruited officers received intensive training in community policing, intelligence gathering, and rules of engagement before deployment to Kankia and Dutsin-Ma LGAs.

Agency restates commitment to justice, fairness

Public Complaints Commission (PCC) has restated its commitment to promoting justice, accountability and fairness.

Speaking in Ado-Ekiti yesterday during the golden jubilee celebration of the agency, the Commissioner representing Ekiti State, Prince Akintade Olayisade, said the celebration offered an opportunity to renew PCC’s dedication to equity and protection of citizens’ rights.

He says as the commission celebrates 50 years of service, Ekiti office remains resolute in strengthening justice delivery, deepening transparency and ensuring  citizens, regardless of their status, can seek redress against administrative injustice.

Olayisade said the commission, established on October 16, 1975, during the administration of General Murtala Mohammed, had remained the voice of the voiceless, the defender of fairness and a bridge between the government and the governed.

“For 50 years, Public Complaints Commission has been a pillar of justice and fairness in our democracy. As we celebrate this golden milestone, we reaffirm our resolve to deepen justice delivery, strengthen transparency and ensure every Nigerian has access to redress without fear or favour.”

The commissioner noted that Ekiti PCC had upheld the core values of the ombudsman by ensuring prompt and impartial investigation of complaints bordering on unpaid entitlements, wrongful dismissals and land disputes.

He said: ‘’These interventions have brought relief to the aggrieved and restored citizens’ confidence in public institutions.’’

Olayisade highlighted the commission’s commitment to innovation and reform, including the introduction of digital record-keeping systems, open-door complaint mechanisms and sustained public enlightenment campaigns to raise awareness about citizens’ rights and avenues for redress.

Acknowledging challenges such as limited resources and increasing case volumes, the commissioner said such hurdles would not deter the commission from fulfilling its statutory responsibilities.

“Our commitment remains firm and unshaken. We will continue to defend the rights of the people, uphold fairness in all dealings and promote transparency and accountability across all tiers of government,” he added.

Olayisade hailed Ekiti State Government, ministries, departments, agencies, civil society groups and the public for their continued cooperation and urged them to sustain their support for the commission’s mission.

Ex-convict allegedly kills girlfriend over N100,000 in Ondo

A 37-year-old ex-convict, Omokinwa Ademola, has been arrested by the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly beating his girlfriend, Joy Jimoh, to death during a dispute over a N100,000 refund.

The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said the tragic incident occurred on October 7 around 5:30 p.m., and was reported by one Ngozi Gregory at the Idanre Divisional Police Headquarters.

Ayanlade said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect engaged the deceased in an argument over the repayment of money he had earlier borrowed from her.

“The quarrel reportedly escalated, leading Ademola to physically assault the victim until she lost consciousness. She was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but was confirmed dead by a medical practitioner,” Ayanlade said.

  • Excluding women from governance weakens Nigeria’s economic performance – Report

Excluding women from governance weakens Nigeria’s economic performance – Report

Nigeria’s persistent exclusion of women from political leadership is costing the nation economically, according to a new report.

The report revealed that the country’s declining female representation in governance has coincided with a slowdown in economic growth.

The new report from NarratEQ, the gender equality insights hub launched by public strategy and advocacy group, Gatefield, indicated that between 2010–2015, when women occupied 31 percent of cabinet positions, Nigeria recorded steady GDP growth of between 6 and 7 percent, its highest in history.

However, according to the report, under successive governments, women’s representation dropped to just 8.8 percent, and economic growth stagnated, reflecting a global pattern linking inclusive leadership with stronger economies.

“Nigeria currently ranks 180th out of 190 countries in women’s political representation. Only 3.9 percent of senators and 8.8 percent of cabinet members are women, figures that trail far behind those of regional peers.

“Rwanda leads globally with 61 percent women in parliament, while South Africa maintains about 45 percent representation across both parliament and cabinet.

“Nigeria has moved backward from 31 percent cabinet representation during the Jonathan administration to 8.8 percent under current leadership, defying its national policy mandate of 35 percent women’s representation and global trends toward greater inclusion,” the analysis showed.

The findings also highlight deep-seated cultural resistance to women in leadership. While 64 percent of Nigerians express comfort with women in corporate leadership roles, only 50 percent feel the same about women in politics, an attitudinal gap that reinforces exclusion despite existing policy frameworks.

The analysis marks the debut of NarratEQ, described as Nigeria’s first gender data hub designed to make equality insights more accessible and actionable.

The platform aggregates verified data across six sectors: political leadership, economic empowerment, health, education, the care economy, and corporate representation, offering monthly insights, visual data tools, and downloadable datasets for policymakers, researchers, journalists, and advocates.

According to Gatefield, NarratEQ seeks to bridge the gap in gender-focused data and help stakeholders craft evidence-based strategies to improve women’s representation.

“NarratEQ is a response to a very nagging problem of siloed data that makes insights difficult to work with in Nigeria. Where data exists, it’s in silos; you can hardly bring them together to get something you can really work with. This initiative will make our situation better,” said Alfred Ajayi, one of the attendees at the platform’s launch.

Gatefield, the organization behind the initiative, is a public strategy and media group known for using data, advocacy, and storytelling to drive social impact.

Through NarratEQ, the group said it aims to push the conversation beyond rhetoric toward measurable inclusion, accountability, and economic transformation driven by gender equity.

  • Foundation trains 1,000 children, teenagers in digital skills

Foundation trains 1,000 children, teenagers in digital skills

No fewer than 1,000 children and teenagers have been trained in digital skills by the Glow Foundation for Children Empowerment and Development, as part of its annual outreach programme to equip young people with tools for the future.

The conference, tagged “1000 2.0,” held in FESTAC Town, Lagos, featured a range of activities, including digital literacy classes, tech empowerment sessions, awards and scholarships, exclusive mentorship slots, spiritual upliftment and blessings, as well as games.

The children, aged between six and 18, were exposed to practical training in digital marketing, graphic design, and data analytics, while selected participants will enjoy full scholarships for advanced learning with partner organisations.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Glow Foundation, Opeyemi Deborah Idowu, said the project stemmed from her desire to “do something beyond herself” and help children, particularly those from marginalised communities.

“I started in 2018 by visiting orphanages on my birthdays instead of hosting parties. The joy I felt convinced me that I couldn’t stop. Today, Glow Foundation is reaching thousands of children and giving them hope,” she said.

She explained that the foundation, which was officially registered in 2022, has, in three years, impacted thousands of children through skills acquisition and empowerment. Last year alone, it reached more than 7,000 children across 44 coastal communities in Ibeju-Lekki, teaching them vocational skills such as hairdressing, baking, soap making, and craft work.

“This year, we decided to move beyond the slums to focus on digital empowerment. We are preparing children for the digital future. Beyond this training, we will be enrolling some of them on scholarships and working with partners to provide laptops and digital devices,” Idowu added.

Director of Strategic Development and Partnerships at the foundation, Kehinde Adelakin, said the initiative has grown steadily from 1,000 children in 2021 to over 7,000 in 2023, thanks to collaborations with schools, NGOs, churches, and community groups.

He stressed that the mentorship element introduced this year will sustain the training.

“I personally mentored four participants in data analytics. Other facilitators are mentoring children in digital marketing and graphic design. We also distributed books, school bags, and other learning materials donated by our partners,” he said.

According to him, the foundation enjoys the support of more than 50 partners and sponsors, including OASIS International and Nobunga Security, who have consistently backed the programmes.

The foundation also announced plans to establish a tuition-free secondary school in Lagos, targeted at children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Idowu maintained that funding challenges will not deter the vision:

“With God’s love driving us, and with consistent partnerships, we can only grow bigger and better. Our mission is to help children see beyond their limitations and believe in the greatness within them,” she said.

Digital marketing expert Martins Nkemakolam urged children to embrace digital marketing skills early in life to prepare them for the future of work and enable them to earn income even while in school.

Speaking on the importance of the topic, he explained that digital marketing has become one of the most vital skills in today’s world, stressing that early exposure will empower young people to thrive in an increasingly digital economy.

“The world is becoming digital, and every day there’s something new to learn. Digital marketing has come to stay. You don’t need to go out to sell your products anymore — you can do it from the comfort of your home,” he said.

He added that many business owners now rely on skilled marketers to manage their online presence, noting that if young people begin to learn these skills early, they can start earning while still in school.

“If they have this knowledge at a young age, by the time they get into the university, they’ll already be grounded. They can earn extra income while studying, and by the time they graduate, they’ll be professionals who can impact others. This will create a cycle of empowerment,” he stated.

Explaining his approach to engaging the children, Nkemakolam said he intends to simplify his teaching so that even younger participants can understand and share what they learn with their peers and parents.

“I’ll break it down in a way that even a six or seven-year-old can understand. Though it’s not primarily for that age group, I want them to grasp the basics and be able to talk about it with others,” he said.

Drawing from personal experience, he revealed that he began his journey into digital marketing at 17, during his school days, and believes that with the availability of modern tools, it’s now even easier for young learners to acquire these skills.

Nkemakolam also addressed concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) taking over human jobs, emphasizing that technology still depends on human control and innovation.

“People say AI will take your job — but AI cannot just take your job; you have to program it. You must build yourself too. When you get to that point, AI will still be answerable to you because it is humans who automate and give commands,” he said.

He encouraged the children to view technology as an opportunity rather than a threat and to position themselves as creators and innovators in the digital space.

“The key lesson I want them to take home,” he concluded, “is that as the world evolves, they too must evolve. Learn the skills, stay relevant, and be ready to lead the change.”

At the end of the training, Idowu delivered an inspiring message to the children, urging them to stay focused, avoid negative influences, choose their friends wisely, and strive to be responsible citizens.
