Police arrest eight over forged NIMC websites

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has arrested eight suspects for allegedly creating 14 fake websites of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

The police said 13 of the fraudulent sites have already been pulled down.

Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Isuku Victor, disclosed this on Thursday while briefing reporters at the NPF National Cybercrime Centre (NCC) in Abuja.

Isuku said: ” The Nigeria Police Force, through its National Cybercrime Centre, has recorded a significant breakthrough in a high-profile cybercrime investigation involving unlawful access to a critical national information infrastructure (CNII).

“This milestone follows a formal petition submitted to the office of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, by the Director General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), alleging unauthorised access, distribution, and commercialisation of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) of Nigerians.

“During this specialised investigation, the NPF-NCCC uncovered a sophisticated syndicate operating through multiple illicit online platforms, illegally interfacing with the National Identity Database (NIDB).

“The actors behind these heinous acts, one Hamzat Luqman and Babalola Tolani Sulaiman, were subsequently arrested in Kwara and Lagos States, respectively. Hamzat Luqman, a software developer, created and hosted the domain “goverify.com.ng” on behalf of Tolani for commercial verification purposes. He is also responsible for three other domains hosted for the same purpose”.

He said further investigations also led to the arrest of other threat actors, including Nura Bello (a software developer), Ibrahim Abubakar, linked to “idfinder.com.ng”, Shuara Kehinde Maroofdeen, Abubakar Hamisu, Abdullahi Salisu, and Ashiru Sani.

Isuku added: “The NPF-NCCC was able to achieve this great feat through the use of Digital Forensic techniques, which aided in identifying threat actors and domains involved in the unlawful sale and verification of NIN-linked PII.

    “These domains have, however, been successfully deactivated. Other domains used to perpetuate these cyber intrusions include: verifymynin.com, trioplus.ng, goverify.com.ng, idfinder.com.ng, verify4me.com.ng, subpoint.com.ng, verify.datashop.com.ng, championtech.com.ng, anyverify.com.ng, kremtech.com.ng, nikeverify.humanity.com.ng, inventures.com.ng.

“Efforts are being intensified to apprehend other shadow perpetrators who engage in illegal distribution, commercialisation and unlawful access to Government databases and dismantle syndicates responsible for carrying out cyber-related offences.

“The Inspector-General of Police has again reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force under his leadership to combating all forms of cyber-crimes, safeguarding national digital assets, reinforcing data privacy laws, and protecting the integrity of citizen identification data”.

In 2023, ACP Aliyu Shaba, then, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), and Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Ekpan Divisional Police Headquarters, bagged two distinguished awards; Best Police Officer of the year award that was presented to him by Vice President, Alhaji Kassim Shettima.

Prior to Shaba’s posting to Ekpan Division, the community was renowned as a very hot zone and comfortable place for criminals.  Aliyu Shaba however succeeded in restoring sanity to the area and the Ekpan residents were able to sleep with their two eyes closed.

The event which was the first of its kind in the Niger Delta region was graced by distinguished members of both the inner and outer bar, and Judges of the Delta State Judiciary.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were two former Presidents of the NBA, Chief Thompson Joseph Okpoko, SAN and Augustine Alegeh, SAN as well as Kunle Edun, SAN, a former National Publicity Secretary of the NBA.

The gathering also comprised Chief Efe Akpofure, SAN; Charles Ajuyah, SAN; Ama Etuwewe, SAN, Ayo Asala, SAN, and Sir Victor Akpoguma, SAN-designate as well as the current and past Chairmen of the NBA Warri, Udu and Effurun Branches and other senior members of the Bar.

These reports were highly commendable and we felt we should acknowledge what is good”.

“We commend him. Good work must be commended and rewarded. When such officers go back, they will not be afraid to say they have done so much.

Continuing;, he said “The Body of SANs also decided to donate some money to the officer and as such the sum of N1million was raised as a Scholarship award, tenable by any of his children in the University in appreciation of his widely acknowledged meritorious conduct”.

Augustine Alegeh, SAN also delivered a paper at the forum titled ‘The Nigeria Police Force and Public Perception’ and enjoined Police officers to continue to serve with diligence so that they will also be honoured just like the award recipient.

He continued: “We are celebrating excellence and we hope this will make more officers excellent.

“The advice for other serving officers is that if you do a good job, you will be recognized”.”In this case, ACP Aliyu Shaba excelled in the way that we felt should be celebrated”.

“We believe that in recognizing one officer doing well, it will encourage other officers to do the same, or even better. Life makes meaning if we all do our best in a space”.

“Instead of us asking the Federal Government to reward people, the Senior Advocates have done their own.  If what the Senior Lawyers have done leads to more recognitions, so be it”.

In a response, ACP Aliyu Shaba who was highly elated said he never taught of receiving any award from such a distinguished class of people.

“I never saw it coming.  I am highly delighted to have a class of Senior Advocates of Nigeria with my Commissioner of Police and well-meaning citizens in Delta State, particularly in Warri, coming together to give me this award”, Shaba retorted.

According to him, “It is an indication that if you are doing good things, people are out there noticing you.  When I was doing all these, I least expected this outcome.  I was just feeling like doing the best I can do.  I am a person that fight crime, I don’t like injustice.

“I only try to see that wherever I stay or work, I put in the best that I can.  Not because of any gain that I  am expecting but just to ensure that the community where I work go home to sleep and close their eyes and criminals never have resting place wherever I am”.

ACP Shaba admonished his colleagues: “With the accolades, the awards and all being said on the social media, this is to tell all my fellow colleagues that they need to put in their best.  Not primarily for reward purpose, but they should just do their best so that others will emulate good things you are doing.  I expect all others to put in their best to be recognized.

“Any operative with criminal tendencies need to change forthwith.  Whatever you do, people will speak about it.  Better you do the best thing so that people will talk good of you instead of taking to criminality.  Crime does not pay.  If you do what is right, the world will be a better place for all of us”.

  • Don seeks more women participation in parliament, governance

Don seeks more women participation in parliament, governance

Foremost academic, Prof Benedicta Egbo, has called for the creation of support networks funded through private and public efforts to enhance the chances of women seeking political offices.

She said that Nigeria is at an important historical juncture, and that achieving its promise as a successful and thriving nation requires that women are given a voice as equal partners in politics and public decision-making in ways that “transcend symbolic tokenism.”

Professor Egbo`s remarks come on the heels of recent calls by stakeholders for increased electoral opportunities for women in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

In a statement on Wednesday, the 2023 presidential candidate of the National Rescue Movement (NRM), said, “The time is now. Indeed, the national parliament and other relevant parties should, as a matter of urgency, enact laws that guarantee women’s greater participation in politics and democratic governance in the country in the interest of equity, fairness and national unity. It is the patriotic thing to do for the common good.”

She also called for reform-oriented interventions such as removing economic barriers that limit women’s access to resources such as “campaign finance, removing cultural impediments, combatting gender-based violence and, building women’s capacity through mentorship and political literacy programmes.”

According to her, no profound social change and sustainable development in Nigeria can be achieved without the full participation of women in the socio-political arena.

Egbo cautioned against discriminatory practices against women seeking public offices, even as she stressed that keeping women at the margins of politics, governance and public decision-making is the same as excluding one half of the country’s population from the processes of development and nation-building.

She said, “Put differently, the transformative development we seek and yearn for in Nigeria cannot take place without co-opting women and giving them a seat at the table.

“Gender equality in all socio-political spheres is fundamental to good governance, a healthy and sustainable democracy. So, what is the way forward?

“Transforming the status quo requires the adoption of several innovative interventions including the removal of the structural and systemic barriers that impede women’s political participation.

“Furthermore, enacting constructive affirmative action laws that guarantee women a certain number of seats within the country’s parliament and other organs of governance should be a non-negotiable intervention strategy.

“While the number of seats is negotiable, it is not unreasonable to expect that between 30-35% of the seats at both the national and state assemblies should be reserved for women. However, empowerment through quotas is only a starting point.”

She lamented the failure of previous attempts at addressing and resolving the problem of gender imbalance in Nigeria’s electoral politics.

She noted that while successive governments have tried to implement policies that were aimed at boosting women’s representation in public decision-making, the “well intentioned” have recorded abysmal failures.

  • Seyi Tinubu beacon of hope for youths, says Klinsmann

Seyi Tinubu beacon of hope for youths, says Klinsmann

Renowned APC stalwart and policy analyst from Anambra State, Pharmacist Ikeagwuonwu Chinedu Klinsmann, has showered glowing commendations on Seyi Tinubu, describing him as “a symbol of visionary youth leadership and an unrelenting champion of Nigeria’s next generation.”

In a statement in Abuja, Klinsmann emphasized that Seyi Tinubu’s interventions in youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement reflect a rare blend of entrepreneurial drive and humanitarian compassion that Nigeria urgently needs at this critical point in its development.

According to Klinsmann, Seyi Tinubu has demonstrated through his philanthropy and business initiatives that “leadership is not only about occupying public office, but about using influence, capacity, and vision to transform lives.”

He highlighted that through the Noella Foundation, TELD NGO, Loatsad Promomedia, and the Renewed Hope Youth Initiative, Seyi Tinubu has touched countless lives across the country, breaking barriers of ethnicity, religion, and political affiliation to provide hope for Nigeria’s disadvantaged youth.

“What Seyi is doing is creating a blueprint for national transformation—he is showing young people that it is possible to rise above challenges, embrace innovation, and make meaningful contributions to society,” Klinsmann stated.

He noted that Seyi Tinubu’s scholarship programs, skill acquisition initiatives, sports sponsorships, and entrepreneurship hubs have all been carefully designed to address the most pressing challenges facing Nigeria’s youth—chief among them, unemployment, lack of access to quality education, and limited civic inclusion.

Klinsmann stressed that the impact is not only measurable in numbers, but also visible in the renewed confidence and aspirations of beneficiaries.

For instance, Loatsad Promomedia has created hundreds of jobs for young Nigerians while providing mentorship and business visibility for startups, while the Noella Foundation has awarded over 1,500 scholarships nationwide, enabling underprivileged youths to complete their education.

The APC Chieftain further explained that Seyi Tinubu’s efforts in civic engagement through the Renewed Hope Youth Initiative have been instrumental in bridging the generational gap in politics, bringing young Nigerians closer to governance structures and policy discussions.

With over 15,000 youths reached through civic education and dialogue programs, the initiative, Klinsmann said, has positioned Seyi as “a unifier who believes that young people must not only be beneficiaries of governance but active shapers of it.”

He added that Seyi Tinubu’s ability to engage across party divides—as demonstrated during the inter-party dialogue events and community outreach programs, especially in Kano State during the last period of Ramadan—reveals his deep commitment to unity and peacebuilding in Nigeria.

Klinsmann also praised Seyi Tinubu’s vision in embracing sports and creative industry development as tools of empowerment. By sponsoring tournaments, building training facilities, and supporting young talents, Seyi has provided thousands of Nigerian youths with opportunities to channel their energy productively and pursue excellence.

“Sports and entertainment are not mere pastimes; they are industries that can generate employment, foster unity, and build a culture of discipline and perseverance. Seyi understands this, and his interventions have already begun to yield results,” Klinsmann remarked.

Reflecting on Seyi Tinubu’s entrepreneurial leadership, Klinsmann pointed out that as CEO of Loatsad Promomedia, Seyi has built not only a thriving business but also an environment that prioritizes youth-centric innovation. The company, he said, is a model of how corporate organizations can drive national development by investing in young talent and giving them platforms to excel. “Loatsad has become more than a business—it is a talent incubator, a launchpad for the future leaders of Nigeria’s creative and digital economy,” Klinsmann observed.

On the philanthropic front, Klinsmann hailed the Noella Foundation as a testimony to Seyi Tinubu’s compassion and commitment to uplifting the marginalized. From providing scholarships and healthcare support to widows and orphans, to building community infrastructure and vocational centers, the foundation has brought hope to countless Nigerian households. Similarly, through TELD NGO, Seyi has sustained youth-focused initiatives for nearly two decades, equipping young Nigerians with practical skills in areas such as IT, agriculture, and renewable energy, and then offering seed funding for them to start businesses.

Klinsmann stressed that these efforts have produced tangible results, citing the establishment of over 200 youth-owned businesses and the creation of an estimated 1,800 jobs as evidence of Seyi Tinubu’s practical approach to tackling unemployment. “When others only talk about what government should do, Seyi is quietly doing it. He is investing in human capital, building entrepreneurs, and creating platforms that outlive political cycles,” Klinsmann emphasized.

He described Seyi Tinubu as a rare role model for young Nigerians, someone who, despite being born into privilege, has chosen the path of responsibility, compassion, and nation-building. According to Klinsmann, “It is easy for the children of political leaders to live off their parents’ legacies, but Seyi has gone beyond that—he is carving his own legacy, and it is a legacy of empowerment, unity, and hope.” He added that Seyi Tinubu’s humility, accessibility, and passion for youth issues have earned him widespread admiration across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Looking ahead, Klinsmann called for greater support for Seyi Tinubu’s initiatives, noting that the scale of Nigeria’s youth challenges requires collective action. He urged the private sector, civil society, and government agencies to partner with Seyi in expanding the geographical reach of his programs, especially in regions like the Northeast and Southeast where youth unemployment remains high. He lauded Seyi’s future plans to establish permanent youth development centers, integrate digital innovation into training programs, and strengthen partnerships with international organizations.

Klinsmann affirmed that Nigeria stands to gain immensely from leaders like Seyi Tinubu, who embody the values of service, innovation, and inclusiveness.

“In Seyi, Nigerian youth have found a leader who understands their struggles, shares their dreams, and is working tirelessly to create opportunities for their success. He is a bridge between generations, a builder of futures, and a symbol of the Nigeria we all aspire to see. I am proud, as an APC stakeholder and as a Nigerian, to celebrate him,” Klinsmann said.

  • Lagos Assembly pushes for energy transformation with Ibile Energy Corporation bill

Lagos Assembly pushes for energy transformation with Ibile Energy Corporation bill

The Lagos State House of Assembly has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the state’s energy sector by holding a public hearing on the proposed Ibile Energy Corporation Law.

The bill seeks to empower the corporation to invest in oil and gas, renewable energy, and electric vehicle infrastructure, with the aim of boosting the state’s transportation and energy systems.

Speaking at the hearing on Thursday, Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Mineral Resources, Oluwa Sabur, explained that the law would enable Ibile Energy Corporation to participate in oil and gas bid rounds, including marginal field allocations, while also exploring opportunities in clean energy.

“This bill before us seeks to establish Ibile Energy Corporation as the state-owned entity with powers to participate in the oil and gas activities across the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors, while also expanding into renewable energy, clean energy solutions, and electric vehicle infrastructure,” Sabur said.

He noted that the proposed legislation would replace the Ibile Oil and Gas Law of 2015, broadening its scope and transitioning the entity into a stronger investment vehicle for Lagos State.

In his keynote address, Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, emphasised that energy remains a vital driver of modern life and economic growth, stressing the Assembly’s resolve to ensure Lagos becomes a leader in energy development.

Sabur said, “This bill before us seeks to establish Ibile Energy Corporation as the state-owned entity with powers to participate in the oil and gas activities across the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors.

“While also expanding into renewable energy, clean energy solutions and electric vehicle infrastructure.

“The bill wants to replace the Ibile Oil and Gas Law of 2015. And what it intends to do really is to give the Ibile Oil and Gas now to be transitioned into Ibile Energy with more mandate to play in the oil and gas, renewable energy and also other sectors that we think can also play as a state.

“Because Ibile Energy Corporation is our investment sector in the oil and gas sector, and we are trying to expand the scope and the mandate of that corporation.”

In his keynote address, the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, said energy remains a vital driver of modern life and economic growth.

Obasa, who was represented by the Deputy Speaker, Meranda Mojisola Lasbat, said every individual, household, and enterprise depends, in one way or another, on oil, gas, or alternative sources of energy.

He said, “The Bill before us is therefore pivotal. Its primary objective is to meet the growing energy demand of our State by strategically investing in oil, gas, and renewable energy activities.

“With the discovery of oil in commercial quantities within Lagos State, this legislation positions us among global oil-producing entities, while also creating new opportunities to diversify into renewable energy solutions.

“The benefits are multifaceted. First, revenue generation for the State will receive a significant boost, thereby empowering the government to undertake more life-changing developmental projects.

“Second, the law will stimulate massive job creation for our people by enabling investment in midstream oil and gas activities—such as gas processing, pipeline deployment, and petrochemical plants.

“These ventures will attract industries, expand employment opportunities, and improve livelihoods across the State.

“In addition, the corporation envisaged under this Bill will be governed by a Board made up of individuals of proven integrity and expertise in the oil and gas sector. With sound policies and guidelines in place, we are confident that the corporation will be shielded from inefficiency, mismanagement, or corruption.”

On his part, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr Biodun Ogunleye, said the bill is a bold step to make oil and gas competitive in the state.

He said the job of ensuring clean energy is part of the mandate of the ministry.

He said Ibile Energy will help the ministry with global businesses.

He noted that the bill is an article and a memo of incorporation of the company, and that it is a tool to empower the people.

Lagos police restore calm after hoodlums clash in Balogun market

The Lagos State Police Command says normalcy has been restored at Balogun Market, Lagos Island, after a violent fight between hoodlums caused panic in the busy commercial area.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Command’s spokesman, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, dismissed reports of a tribal clash, clarifying that the incident was a confrontation between miscreants.

According to the police, around 11 a.m., one Ebuka Adindu from Abia State stabbed Sodiq Ibrahim from Kogi State to death during a fight.

Adindu also stabbed himself in the shoulder and lost consciousness. He has been arrested and is currently under police guard at the hospital.

The Command confirmed there were no injuries to traders, no destruction of property, and no loss of innocent lives inside the market.

“The incident is not a tribal clash but purely between miscreants and hoodlums around Balogun Market. Normalcy has been restored,” Hundeyin said.

He added that Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) of Lion Building and Ebute-Ero divisions were on ground with their men, maintaining order.

Meanwhile, the Command also confirmed it had restored normalcy in Owode-Onirin after a deadly clash between traders and land grabbers, which left three persons dead and a police inspector critically injured.
