FG targets 40% local content, 30% EV production with new automotive centre in Ikorodu

The federal government has unveiled the Automotive Training Centre at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, saying the facility will drive Nigeria’s goal of achieving 40 percent local content in vehicle production and 30 percent manufacturing of electric vehicles.

Commissioning the centre, Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Senator John Enoh, said it is one of 21 facilities established nationwide to expand access to skills development.

He noted that the centre will equip youths, artisans, and technicians with modern automotive skills, including electric vehicle handling and advanced maintenance techniques.

“This project is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the automotive sector, create jobs, and position Nigeria competitively in global manufacturing,” Enoh said.

The initiative, implemented by the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), aligns with the National Automotive Policy.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Mrs. Morenikeji Azeez, hailed the project as timely, saying it will boost technical capacity and support industrial growth.

NADDC Board Chairman, Chief Emma Eneukwu, described the centre as a hub for training, research, and emerging technologies like electric vehicles (EVs) and compressed natural gas (CNG) conversions.

Director-General of NADDC, Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, added that 23 additional training centres are being built nationwide to strengthen the automotive value chain and reduce unemployment.

LASUSTECH Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya, called the centre a “giant step” in advancing Nigeria’s technological and industrial ambitions, serving as a base for design, prototyping, and commercialization of automotive innovations.

Odusanya said the centre’s presence at LASUSTECH aligns with the university’s IMPACT agenda, which focuses on infrastructural development, manpower building, productivity, excellence, state partnership, and town-and-gown collaboration.

He pledged the institution’s readiness to maximize the facility through partnership with NADDC and the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment.

Also delivering a goodwill message, President of the Automotive Sector Skills Council of Nigeria, Engr. Best Nnodim, said the initiative marked a “significant milestone” in bridging Nigeria’s automotive skills gap.

He commended NADDC for its vision, stressing that the centre would empower youths, drive innovation, and reduce dependence on vehicle imports.

He added that the council would continue to work with stakeholders to make the centre a beacon of excellence in technical training and research.

SAHCO officiials, others arrested for tagging luggage stuffed with drugs in pilgrims’ names

Two staff members of the Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO), Celestina Emmanuel Yayock, and Jazuli Kabir, have confessed to framing Maryam Hussain Abdullahi and two other pilgrims.

They accepted N100,000 each to tag pilgrims’ bags containing illicit substances. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said the men were part of a criminal syndicate.

This syndicate operated at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) in Kano.

Following detection of these drugs, the three Nigerian pilgrims were detained in Saudi Arabia. Mrs. Maryam Hussain Abdullahi, Mrs. Abdullahi Bahijja Aminu, and Mr. Abdulhamid Saddiq, were headed for execution if found guilty. The pilgrims boarded an Ethiopian Airline flight ET940 on August 6, this year. The flight was from Kano to Jeddah en route Addis-Ababa. The three were, unfortunately, tagged with six extra bags. Three of these bags were found to contain illicit drugs.

According to a statement from NDLEA, “The bags were tagged and checked in by members of staff of Skyway Aviation Handling Company, who are also members of the criminal syndicate, to the names of the three complainants secretly and without their knowledge or consent. The bags illegally tagged against the complainants’ names are the ones intercepted in Saudi Arabia and found to contain the illicit drug substances. For the above reasons, the three complainants were arrested and detained for crimes they had no knowledge of.”

Six members of the syndicate are in NDLEA custody. Four have been charged to court. They are the 55-year-old drug kingpin Ali Abubakar Mohammed (aka Bello Karama), Abdulbasit Adamu, Murtala Akande Olalekan, and Celestina Emmanuel Yayock.

Director, Media & Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, said the suspects made confessional statements.

Ali admitted to bringing in seven bags. Celestina confessed to checking in two of them for N100,000. Another suspect, Jazuli Kabir, checked in two other bags and also collected N100,000. Ali travelled with the remaining three bags on Egypt Air.

The NDLEA has receipts of the money transfer. The sum of N200,000 went from Ali to Celestina. Celestina, then, transferred N100,000 to Jazuli.

A swift NDLEA investigation uncovered the plot. It was prompted by complaints from the victims’ families. The bags were traced back to the drug kingpin, Abubakar. He was the mastermind behind the operation. The bags were secretly checked in by members of the criminal syndicate.

The two SAHCO staff, Yayock and Kabir, confessed to checking in the fraudulent bags in the name of the pilgrims. They were paid N100,000 each for the job. They are in NDLEA custody, along with Abubakar and other syndicate members. They are facing multiple charges.

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig.- Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), is engaging with his Saudi counterparts. He plans to present the agency’s findings to the General Directorate of Narcotics Control (GDNC) in Saudi Arabia.

This is to prove the innocence of the three Nigerians. They are clearly victims of a criminal conspiracy.

The NDLEA statement read: “In the light of the foregoing, and the evidence gathered by the Agency in the course of our investigation, it is clear that Mrs. Maryam Abdullahi and two others who are being detained in Saudi are victims of circumstance, implicated by the activities of a criminal syndicate operating at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport.”

  • We’re revolutionising agric sector with modern technologies – Makinde

We’re revolutionising agric sector with modern technologies – Makinde

Governo Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has reiterated his administration’s commitment to exploring modern technologies to improve and transform agricultural practices in the state.

He spoke through his deputy, Bayo Lawal, on Monday, while receiving, on a courtesy visit, Chinese investors from China Overseas Engineering Group Co. Limited at the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Ibadan.

The governor noted that investments in agriculture development and value chain are part of the vision of the present administration to expand the economy of the state and attract more investors.

He added that the state has a comparative advantage in agriculture and has also invested in enablers such as infrastructure and security, calling on the Chinese investors to partner with the state government to guarantee food security, boost agricultural productivity and make the state a hub for agro-industrial processing, which he noted, would generate thousands of employment opportunities and improve revenue drive.

He assured that the government would provide an enabling environment to support the investors’ vision of partnering with the state.

Lawal said, “On behalf of His Excellency, the Governor of Oyo State, let me formally welcome you to Oyo State. I was really excited that you are coming to Oyo State with the sole purpose of partnering with us and with the view to lifting our economy.

“The DG OYSIPA hinted that your core competence is in agriculture. When I also interacted with the DG OYSADA to validate the statement made, he also confirmed that your core competence is in agriculture.

“And really, when you made your presentation this afternoon, I found out that you are here to make some workable progress in areas of agriculture, be it crop, poultry, animal husbandry, and so on. So, you are highly welcome to Oyo State.

“As a state government, it means that we can do business together. The infrastructural development that we have in place, settlements that can attract further agricultural development, and even our hospitable people around here, all of those are available to our investors.

“Any race or country that ignores the production of food to feed its citizens is in peril. So, that is why you’re coming, and the area of competencies that you seem to be giving to us is very attractive.

“You are bringing technology to improve the value chain. We may be giving land, security, and infrastructure as our contribution, if you so choose. It all depends on the model that you put on the table, which will be mutually beneficial to the two parties. But what is important, what you are priding, what you are selling, is agric-technology.

“What we have in Oyo State, as I have said, is land. So, if you are looking for land, in order for you to bring about the technology that you are bringing from China, we have it in large quantities in our state.

“The size of Oyo State is equal to the size of five states in the south-eastern part of Nigeria. In other words, if you do business with our state, it is like you are doing business with five states in Nigeria in terms of land mass.

“Fortunately, in our state, we have rainforest vegetation like we have in Ibadan around here. You have almost Sahel vegetation up north of our state. And, in between, you have another vegetation that can support all kinds of agric practices. So, it is not just cassava or rice. You can look at other opportunities that can support the kind of vegetation that we have in our state.

“Let me also say that the governor of Oyo State, if he travels out looking for investors, I think 90 per cent of his journeys target investments in agribusiness and the agriculture value chain.

“So, we stand ready in Oyo State to embrace whatever technology to improve our system, particularly the agric system that we practise in our state to lift us from primary subsistence agricultural practices to industrial and commercial agric enterprises.

“Currently, we are establishing Agribusiness Hubs around the state. The first one is Fasola, and I hope you will be there very shortly. Eruwa, if time permits, you will be there. And then recently, we have Ijaye. Actually, less than a month or so ago, the President of the African Development Bank was here in Oyo State to flag off the Ijaye Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone. That’s just about 30 kilometres away from this spot. So, all of these are geared towards a strong commitment to agricultural development in Oyo State.”

Also in his remarks, the Director General, Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency, Dr Debo Akande, appreciated the Chinese team’s vision and mission, which he noted, aligned with the state’s agriculture strategies.

He noted that rural transformation, building industrial hubs and development of agro-processing zones in the state are geared towards taking comparative advantages of the state in agribusiness to expand the economy.

He called for a mutual relationship that would benefit all partners, saying: “Your vision, plans, and your mission are well understood and we are clear about them.”

He added, “Your vision aligns with the direction that we are going already as a state. Why did I say this? In the last close to seven years, the key area that the state has focused on under the leadership of His Excellency, the Governor of the State, has primarily been on how to take advantage of our comparative advantage in the state, which, as everybody probably knows, is agriculture and agribusiness.

“We have a strategy that we developed that speaks to the agribusiness development of our state. And one of the critical components for us is that we understand that there is nothing like agricultural transformation without rural infrastructural transformation.

“So, we have been working on that. But even added to that, under the leadership of Governor Makinde as well, we are expanding rural roads beyond what we currently have. We have 1,200 kilometres of rural road under the RAAMP project that needs to be done.

“You will even possibly see the construction ongoing at the Ikere Gorge Dam that you are going to tomorrow.”

Earlier, the team lead, who is also the Director, Strategic Services, Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission, Abuja, Alhaji Abubakar Yerima, commended Governor Makinde for transforming the state through laudable infrastructural projects and investment in agribusiness.

Also speaking, the leader of the Chinese team, Ms Dong Gwping, stressed that the team’s intervention is expected to revolutionise the agricultural landscape by stimulating socio-economic growth and development in the state for a complete value chain with the provision of Chinese technologies and expertise for partnership.

The event also had in attendance the Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment and Cooperatives, Hon Adeniyi Adebisi; Director-General, Oyo State Investment Public-Private Partnership Agency (OYSIPA), Mr Tilewa Folami; Permanent Secretaries from the two agencies present, Mr Adewale Bolarinwa and Alhaji Kolawole Badmus and the Assistant Director, Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission, South-West Zonal Office, Mr Samuel Ajewole, among others.
