Terrorists kill four soldiers in fresh attack on Shiroro communities

No fewer than four security personnel were killed and several others injured on Thursday when heavily armed terrorists launched another deadly assault on communities in the Lakpma axis of Shiroro local government area of Niger State.

The attack, which occurred in the Dnasapa, Iburo, and surrounding villages of the Galkogo district, saw a coordinated onslaught by a mix of insurgent groups, including Boko Haram, ISWAP and bandits.

The assailants reportedly hoisted Boko Haram flags during the assault, confirming fears that the area has become a stronghold for extremist elements.

According to eyewitness accounts, the incident happened while officers stationed at Galkogo were on a routine patrol.

They were ambushed by the insurgents, who outnumbered and outgunned them in a fierce gun battle that left four soldiers dead.

“This is a monumental loss,” said Babangida Wassa Kudodo, a concerned citizen of the area, in a statement after the attack,

“These officers are the last line of defence for our communities. Their loss is both tragic and unacceptable.”

The latest violence has sparked renewed outrage and urgent calls for government action. Residents and community leaders are appealing to federal and state authorities to immediately send reinforcements to the Galkogo base, which serves as the security hub for villages under constant siege.

Kudodo, while condemning the “barbaric” attacks, urged governments at all levels to “relook at the issues of insecurity in Lakpma and Shiroro with a view to bringing this madness to an end.”

Over the past few years, Shiroro LGA has suffered repeated assaults from armed groups. The Lakpma axis in particular has become a flashpoint, with attacks forcing many villagers to flee their homes, abandoning farms, schools, and businesses.

Security experts say the convergence of insurgent groups in the region is a dangerous trend that requires a coordinated military and intelligence response, not just routine patrols. Locals fear that without immediate intervention, more lives will be lost, and the area will remain under siege.

“I pray for the repose of the souls of our departed comrades and the speedy recovery of the wounded,” Kudodo said in his statement, “But more than prayers, what we need now is urgent, decisive action.”

The Niger State Government and the military are yet to issue official statements on the latest attack as of the time of filing this report.

The High Court of Mbaise Judicial Division sitting in Ahiazu Mbaise, Imo State, has issued a restraining order halting the planned parallel National Convention of the Neo Black Movement (NBM) of Africa, scheduled to take place in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State on July 26, 2025.

The order, granted by Hon Justice Mike Onyekachi on Friday, followed an ex-parte motion brought by the Registered Trustees of NBM of Africa alongside two senior members, Chief Olorogun Ese Kakor and Ikechi Opara, the Mbaise Zonal Coordinator of the organization.

The court barred seven defendants—Bemigho Eyeoyibo, Akeem Zibiri, Barr. Isimeme Jesse Iriogbe, Hope Aliyu, Dr. Anthony Orunkoya (also known as Tony Masaka), the State Security Services (SSS), and the Nigeria Police Force—from organizing or participating in the disputed convention, pending the determination of a substantive motion for interlocutory injunction.

Additionally, the plaintiffs were granted permission to serve the court’s orders and other legal processes by substituted means—specifically through publication in a national newspaper.

The case has been adjourned to July 30, 2025, for hearing of the motion on notice.

This ruling is seen as a major development in the ongoing leadership dispute within the Neo Black Movement of Africa, an organization on a mission rooted in Pan-African advocacy and social justice.

FCCPC, Police, traders clash at Lagos market

A team of Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) officials, accompanied by armed police and reporters, yesterday faced resistance from traders at the Daleko market in Mushin, Lagos.

Relying on intelligence reports, the FCCPC team had aimed to crack down on traders allegedly rebaging rice in various brand names and reproducing rice bags from firms that have left Nigeria since 2015, including Royal Stallion and Caprice rice.

The FCCPC alleged that rice bagged in the names of Royal Stallion, Mama Gold and Caprice companies were still being sold

FCCPC said: “Our surveillance has revealed this deceptive practice is potentially misleading consumers and violating consumer protection law.”

Despite evidence of alleged offences, the traders refused to cooperate with FCCPC officials, citing lack of notification to the market leader.

The resistance highlighted tensions between regulators and market stakeholders.

But, despite the resistance, the FCCPC team sealed a shop involved in the reproduction.

FCCPC Lagos Southwest Zonal Coordinator, Mrs. Magret Aboluwade, expressed disappointment at the illegal activities and vowed that the law would take its course.

Mrs. Aboluwade emphasised the commission’s commitment to protecting consumer rights, adding: FCCPC will continue to perform its duties, ensuring compliance with consumer protection laws.”

Similarly, the FCCPC sealed 10 shops in Abuja recently over rebagging of local rice as foreign brands and over unfair pricing .

According to the Commission, this practice is not only exploitative but also infringes on consumer rights and undermines economic integrity.

The FCCPC warned consumers to avoid purchasing these products as they are either expired or deceptively rebagged local rice sold at exorbitant price.

How we kidnapped Bayelsa Judge, by suspects

The eight suspects involved in the abduction of the Bayelsa High Court Judge, Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro, have narrated their roles in the operation.

They were paraded by security agencies led by the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Francis Idu, and the state Director, Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Adedapo Amao, yesterday in Yenagoa, the state capital.

The gang included six males and two females.

A manhunt has been launched for the leader who is at large, The Nation has learnt.

He confessed he was part of the kidnap after a man he referred to as “General” informed him about it.

He said upon arrival in Yenagoa, they were given uniforms and vehicles for the operation and swung into action.

The suspect said Justice Omukoro was taken from the premises of an eatery at Ekeki area of Yenagoa and moved to a location in a neighbouring state.

He, however, claimed they had no actual target but stumbled on the Judge.

Broderick said their victim was moved to their camp and that when he told them he is Ijaw from Ekeremor Local Government Area, they decided to “treat him well.”

He also stated that their leader, whom he referred to as “General” insisted  that Justice Umukoro be handcuffed, adding that being a fellow Ijaw man, they decided to treat him with care.

His words: “So, he called me on June 21 that I should come to Yenagoa. He also called John Uzi, the person that is beside me. And I called Kelvin Olu, my younger brother, to come with me to Bayelsa.

“We mobilised the vehicle for the movement and uniforms were provided. We moved from our camp, and it was not a fixed target. We were just patrolling before we met the Judge at Kilimanjaro. So, we approached him and kidnapped him from there to our camp.”

Another suspect, who identified himself as John, said he was contacted but did not join in the operation as he was unwell, stressing that he was in the camp when the victim was brought in.

Bayelsa Police boss, Francis Idu, said the arrests was a testimony to the security governance measures of Governor Diri, who he said always insisted that security agencies work together to ensure that the state was free of crime.

Idu said the DSS sent a special team from Abuja for the operation, which led to the arrest of the suspects.

Idu praised the governor for providing the logistics for the operation,  saying the CCTV cameras mounted by the government in parts of the state were useful during the rescue and eventual arrest.
