  • Allegations against Wike political, unsubstantiated, says Onoh

Allegations against Wike political, unsubstantiated, says Onoh

A former spokesperson for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the Southeast, Dr. Josef Onoh, has described recent calls for the removal of Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, as politically motivated and lacking in substance.

Onoh, in a statement, said the allegations, especially those concerning illegal land allocations, were not backed by verifiable evidence and appeared aimed at discrediting the minister’s efforts to transform the FCT.

He maintained that Wike’s actions in office were guided by the law and aligned with the development objectives of the FCT.

Citing constitutional provisions and existing land administration laws, Onoh argued that Wike’s decisions on land allocation and revocation were lawful.

According to him, the Land Use Act of 1978, vests land administration authority in the FCT Minister, adding that  Section 302 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), empowers the Minister to exercise delegated authority from the President.

Responding to claims that the Minister had allocated land to family members and associates, Onoh noted that no official documents or credible evidence have been presented to support such claims.

He pointed to Section 36(1) of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to a fair hearing and the presumption of innocence.

Onoh noted that the FCT administration under Wike has repeatedly clarified that land allocations were carried out within the Abuja Master Plan, adding that Wike had denied allocating land to his children and asked those in doubt to scrutinise records of land allocations.

On allegations involving companies reportedly linked to Wike’s family members, Onoh said these remained unproven. He also noted that even if the individuals in question had applied for land, they are entitled to be treated equally under Section 42 of the Constitution, which prohibits discrimination.

Addressing the revocation of certain land titles, including that of an embassy, Onoh said such actions were within the Minister’s powers under the Land Use Act, provided they followed due process. He emphasized that revocations tied to violations of the Abuja Master Plan or undocumented land holdings were consistent with the minister’s mandate.

He acknowledged the ongoing investigation reportedly ordered by President Tinubu into similar allegations, describing it as a sign of the administration’s commitment to accountability.

On the role of the National Assembly, Onoh said oversight was vital but must be evidence-based. According to him, the absence of formal petitions or concrete proof may explain why the legislature has not taken a definitive stance on the matter.

He highlighted several infrastructure projects under Wike’s leadership, including road construction, solar-powered streetlights, and urban renewal initiatives, as tangible signs of progress in the FCT.

Onoh cautioned critics against making unverified public allegations, warning that such actions might run afoul of defamation laws under the Penal Code Act.

Concluding, Onoh reiterated that Wike’s administration in the FCT was operating within the bounds of the law, urging anyone with evidence of wrongdoing to present it to the appropriate authorities rather than resorting to public speculation.

  • Lagos traders seek probe over viral rice smuggling claim

Lagos traders seek probe over viral rice smuggling claim

Traders at Daleko Rice Market in the Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State have called on the federal and state governments to investigate a viral video alleging that the market is a hub for smuggled rice.

During a press conference held at the market, the traders strongly denied any involvement in illegal activities, describing the claims circulating on social media as false, damaging, and a deliberate attempt to tarnish the market’s reputation.

They reiterated their support for local rice production and urged the public to disregard the viral video, which they said was aimed at sabotaging their efforts and damaging the image of Daleko Rice Market.

Speaking on behalf of the traders, the Iyalaje of Mushin and Vice President of Nigerian Rice Distribution, Ibilola Solaja – who was mentioned in the video – distanced herself from the allegations.

She described the video as part of a smear campaign that threatens the credibility of local rice traders and undermines efforts to promote made-in-Nigeria rice.

“I want the government to please help us investigate the video. I am calling on the Nigerian government and all security agencies to step in. We have the DSS, the police, and several other agencies capable of uncovering the truth. It is really embarrassing and disturbing,” Solaja said.

She urged both the federal and Lagos State governments to urgently identify and prosecute those responsible for the “campaign of calumny” against the market and its traders.

The Babaloja of the market, Alhaji Muftau Adisa, also dissociated the traders from any form of smuggling, maintaining that all operations in the market are legal and transparent.

“We operate in compliance with Nigerian laws. We urge the government to conduct a thorough investigation, clear our name, and hold those responsible for spreading falsehoods accountable,” he said.

Another trader, Stella Mide, who also condemned the video, dismissed its content, insisting that only Nigerian rice is sold in the market.

“We don’t know where the video came from. Everything in it is false. We deal only in Nigerian rice,” she said.

  • Lagos drug marketers protest alleged hijack of centre

Lagos drug marketers protest alleged hijack of centre

Pharmaceutical marketers in Lagos yesterday protested the alleged hijack of the Coordinated Wholesale Centre (CWC) project by some individuals and entities.

The Nigeria Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers (NAPPMED) said the drug distribution hub, meant to regulate the open drug markets, has been transformed into a monopoly, leaving over 3,000 legitimate medicine dealers sidelined.

Chairman of NAPPMED, Liberation Zone, Mr Osita Nwajide said: “We medicine dealers paid for that land under the Lagos State Medicine Dealers Association (LSMDA). But today, we have been pushed aside. We are demanding either our land back or a second CWC.”

According to Nwajide, over 920 marketers contributed between N100,000 and N1million each in 2011 to buy the land for the CWC, with the hope of operating in a regulated space.

However, with shop prices pegged at a staggering N93.5 million per unit, he said the marketers who funded the vision had been priced out.

“They are asking us to pay N93.5 million for a shop from June to December. How many of us can afford that? Many of us are small to medium-scale operators. It’s an impossible demand.

“With only 720 shops available and more than 3,000 displaced marketers, the result is obvious: market exclusion, supply distortions, and risk of black-market proliferation,” Nwajide said.

Nwajide warned that If the association demands were not met, “we will see an increase in black-market drug distribution in Lagos. This could lead to dangerous shortages, infiltration of counterfeit drugs, and a full-scale public health crisis.”

NAPPMED leaders alleged that the CWC had not only been monetised but also turned into a pseudo-private company.

“They are selling shares among themselves. How do you sell private company shares without public disclosure or stock exchange listing?

“Those who built this project have been excluded, while a handful of connected individuals are listed as persons with significant control,” he said.

Documents cited by the group show that the project’s governance has shifted from oversight into the hands of select business interests, many of whom are not licensed pharmaceutical operators.

To salvage the situation, the marketers are calling on the Federal Government, Lagos State Government, and Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria (PCN) to initiate plans for a second CWC.

They insist that the proposed second centre must prioritise affordability, with shop units ideally priced between ₦35,000 and ₦40,000 yearly, and be governed through a transparent and inclusive system by regulators.

Also, the centre should have a zonal spread to ease congestion and improve access across Lagos, as well as incorporate digital traceability systems to monitor drug movement and ensure accountability throughout the supply chain, they added.

“Lagos is a mega city of over 25 million people. It has two seaports and two airports. One CWC with just 720 shops is grossly inadequate,” Nwajide said.

The group proposed that the second CWC be located in Lagos Island, preferably in areas like Ibeju Lekki and its environs, where they say sufficient land is available and logistics are more favourable.

The marketers have taken their appeal to the country’s leadership.

“We are passionately appealing to President Bola Tinubu, a son of Lagos, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to come to our rescue.

“Give us a second CWC that is people-focused and fairly distributed. If done right, Lagosians will enjoy equitable access to affordable and quality medicines.

“If we allow a monopoly to take root here, the consequences will be grave: rising costs, declining availability, and the erosion of public trust in our medicine supply system.” Nwajide warned.

Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, praised the professionalism and promptness of the team. She highlighted the possible cause of the incident, attributing it to negligence.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the victim may not have followed necessary safety procedures before entering the well. We urge members of the public to always notify relevant authorities before engaging in potentially hazardous tasks,” she said.

  • Police, Immigration unite against criminality

    Police, Immigration unite against criminality

To ensure that wanted or suspected criminals do not evade justice by fleeing from the country, the Lagos Police Command and Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in the state have pledged enhanced collaboration.

Specifically, both agencies committed to improved intelligence sharing to prevent fugitives of the law from using Lagos as an escape route from the country.

The renewed commitment was made at the command headquarters in Ikeja when the NIS state Comptroller, Aliyu Akadri, who assumed duty recently, visited the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh.

Akadri  said the Federal Government has provided the NIS with sophisticated equipment to monitor movements.

“Once we get an order from the court that a criminal is wanted or they are looking for a person, we remain at alert.

“The government has assisted us in so many ways  by making our job very easy. There is no way a criminal can sneak out of the country now that we have acquired some new systems.

“Any criminal that has a mind of fleeing the country should better have a rethink because he will surely be apprehended, even if he or she takes the illegal route,” he said.

The NIS boss acknowledged the need for collaboration among security agencies.

“If there’s any intelligence report we gather from ourselves, I can easily send it to my brother. If there’s anything that you can assist us with, at least my brother can call me.

“We are working for the same goal. The goal is to protect Nigeria.”

Jimoh noted that both agencies had been working for decades, assuring Akadri of his support.

“I want to equally assure you that during your time, we are going to strengthen that cordial working relationship to take it to a higher level and ensure that we achieve the objective for which the government has set us up. We will equally ensure that the policy and programme of government on internal security are fully implemented.

“We are going to push coordination between us to ensure that the people of Lagos and visitors enjoy the best of security cooperation between the two agencies.

“We are on the same page as foot soldiers to work together. The police will collaborate with you. So, there is not going to be anything different. Anything that you are going to see that will be different is an improvement in what we have on the ground.

“I want to assure you that your tour of duty here will be very successful, building on the existing cordial relationship that we have been enjoying with each other,” he added.

Boat accidents: NIWA launches ‘No life jackets, no boarding’ campaign

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has unveiled a campaign tagged, “No life jacket, no boarding’’ in riverine communities in Niger State to reduce boat mishaps and enhance waterway safety.

According to the NIWA Area Manager, Niger and Kwara, Mr Akapo Adeboye, at the Zumba waterfront in Shiroro Local Government Area, the campaign is aimed at sensitising boat owners and users on the importance of using life jackets.

He pointed out that many boat mishaps occur on the River Kaduna, adding that the campaign is aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to safeguarding the lives on the waterways.

Adeboye told reporters: “The campaign was organised for boat operators and passengers anticipating rising water levels due to predicted heavy rainfall forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA).

“The reason behind organising the sensitisation on safety of lives and property on inland waterways regulations is to ensure compliance and reduce accidents.

“There have been so many boat accidents here because of non-use of life jackets. This spot is very important because people come from everywhere for business, and we are working to ensure that lives and properties are safe. We urge everyone to take safety seriously and comply with the regulations to avoid accidents occasioned by boat mishaps.’’

Adeboye attributed the reduction in water mishaps in Niger over the past year to sustained sensitisation and enforcement of water transport regulatory measures across water fronts while stating that the agency would not tolerate disregard for water transport regulations, especially the use of life jackets.

Chairman, Boat Owners and Freshwater Users Association, Shiroro, Alhaji Aliyu Yerima, applauded the campaign and the donation, describing it as timely.
