An operative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), simply identified as Jide, has been shot dead by suspected drug peddlers in Ondo State.

The officer attached to the Ondo Command of the NDLEA was killed during a raid on an apartment in Ita’nla, Ondo town yesterday.

A source, who confirmed the incident to our reporter, said the team of the NDLEA came under gunfire when they stormed the building to recover the drugs stored in the ceiling of the apartment.

“I guess the team got a tip that some drugs were stored in the residential building at Ita’nla in Ondo. So, the officials came very early in a sting operation to bust the building.

“Immediately they came in, some of them entered into the building to recover the exhibits while Officer Jide stood outside mounting the sentry guard. Suspected gunmen came from nowhere and opened fire on him and was shot in the neck.

“The officer was immediately rushed to the hospital, but the doctors on duty confirmed him dead on arrival. It is a very sad development,” he said.

But the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the incident.

He said four suspects had already been arrested in connection with the crime, adding that a single barrel gun had been recovered.

“Immediately it happened, we reinforced some of our officers down to the scene. We have been able to arrest four prime suspects who are in our custody.

“We have also recovered a single barrel gun, and investigation is also going in collaboration with the NDLEA to bring the perpetrators of the dastardly attack and killing to book,” Ayanlade further said.

In a statement, the spokesperson for the Police Command, Ayanlade Olayinka, said five suspects were arrested in Jigawa, Kano, and Sokoto states, following an investigation by the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Squad.

He explained that the suspects were linked to the February 8, 2023, invasion of Dollar Boys Global Investment, at Okuta, Elerinla in Akure.

According to Olayinka, the gang stormed the premises around 1 a.m., assaulted security guards, and fled with the DAF truck, marked T94121 with chassis number XLRTE85COF572200.

He noted that the police swung into action after a petition was filed by the truck owner to the Ondo State Commissioner of Police on May 23, this year.

“The vehicle was traced to Brinni Kudi in Jigawa State, where one suspect was apprehended. Further operations led to the arrest of two others in Rimi Gado and Shanono local government areas of Kano State.

“The operation was later extended to Sokoto State, where two additional suspects were arrested at Dogodaji House, and the stolen truck was recovered. It was discovered that the gang had altered the truck’s identification details in an attempt to evade detection but were eventually tracked down by investigators,” he said.

While commending the officers involved in the operation, the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal warned that criminals would be hunted down no matter where they hide.

He, however, assured the residents of the command’s readiness to protect lives and property, urging the public to provide credible information to the police.

Aiyedatiwa urges Ondo traditional rulers to embrace peace, unity for grassroots development

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has charged traditional rulers in the state to embrace peace and unity in the interest of grassroots development and good governance.

Governor Aiyedatiwa made the appeal on Tuesday at the official presentation of the Instrument of appointment and staff of office to the first Olusin of Owalusin, Oba Stephen Oloruntele Ogunoye I, at Iwaro-Oka in Akoko Southwest Local Government Area of the state.

Represented by the state commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Amidu Takuro, the governor emphasised the crucial role monarchs play in maintaining peace and ensuring stability in their respective domains.

“Where there is rancour among monarchs, development suffers. Peace is a precondition for progress, and our Obas, being the closest to the grassroots, must lead by example,” Aiyedatiwa said.

He also warned against any form of power tussle or expansionist ambitions capable of disrupting the peace of the state, charging the royal fathers to work together and prioritise the well-being of their communities.

As traditional leaders and local security heads, the governor urged the monarchs to support the efforts at flushing out miscreants and criminals by promptly reporting suspicious activities to the authorities.

He congratulated Oba Ogunoye for being the first monarch to ascend the throne under the recommendations of the Justice C.E.T. Ajama Commission of Inquiry into Chieftaincy Matters, urging him to use the opportunity to foster unity and development in his domain.

Remarking, Takuro, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Oladele Adesanmi, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to fairness and neutrality in filling vacant stools across communities.

He also acknowledged the pivotal roles played by notable sons of the community, such as Dare Emiola and Chief Olugbenga Atiba, in actualising the event.

The Olubaka of Oka land, Oba Yusuf Adebori Adeleye, expressed gratitude to the governor for responding positively to the wishes of the people and pledged continued support for the government.

In his response, Oba Ogunoye thanked the state government and his people for the honour bestowed on him.

The newly installed monarch promised to rule with the fear of God and seek the progress of his people, appealing for urgent intervention on the deplorable condition of roads in the area.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of Akoko Southwest Local Government, Hon. Ayo Ajana, described the installation of Oba Ogunoye as a testament to the political will of the Governor Aiyedatiwa-led administration to ensure every community has a recognised traditional ruler.

Police, Immigration pledge enhanced collaboration against criminality

To ensure that wanted or suspected criminals do not evade justice by fleeing from the country, the Lagos Police Command and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in the state have pledged enhanced collaboration.

Specifically, both agencies committed to improved intelligence sharing to prevent fugitives of the law from using Lagos as an escape route from the country.

The renewed commitment was made at the command headquarters in Ikeja when the Lagos State Comptroller of NIS, Aliyu Akadri, who assumed duty recently, visited the Commissioner of Police (CP) Olohundare Jimoh.

Speaking at the event, Akadri said the federal government has provided the NIS with sophisticated equipment to monitor movements.

“Once we get an order from the court that a criminal is wanted or they are looking for a person, we remain on alert.

“The government has assisted us in so many ways by making our job very easy. There is no way a criminal can sneak out of the country now that we have acquired some new systems.

“Any criminal that has a mind of fleeing the country should better have a rethink because he will surely be apprehended, even if he or she takes the illegal route,” he said.

On his visit to the Police Command, the NIS boss acknowledged the need for cooperation and collaboration among security agencies.

“If there’s any intelligence report we gather from ourselves, I can easily send it to my brother. If there’s anything that you can assist us with, at least my brother can call me.

“We are working for the same goal. The goal is to protect Nigeria.”

In his response, CP Jimoh noted that both agencies have been working together for decades, assuring Akadri of his support.

“I want to equally assure you that during your time, we are going to strengthen that cordial working relationship to take it to a higher level and ensure that we achieve the objective for which the government has set us up. We will equally ensure that the policy and programme of government on internal security are fully implemented.

“Working together, we are going to push coordination between us to ensure that the people of Lagos and visitors enjoy the best of security cooperation between the two agencies.

“We are on the same page as foot soldiers to work together in a collaborative manner. The police will collaborate with you. So, there is not going to be anything different. Anything that you are going to see that will be different is an improvement in what we have on the ground.

“I want to assure you that your tour of duty here will be very successful, building on the existing cordial relationship that we have been enjoying with each other,” he said.

Okeoma said the foundation had championed an online fund-raiser for the woman to enable them to buy for her a baking oven worth N175,000 but the donations had exceeded more than N2mllion.

“The foundation received the donations through the lady’s First Bank account, which she is the only person that has access to it,” stating: “The reason is to ensure transparency and to genuinely lift her out of poverty.”

“This is a woman who told us that she had only N200 the day we visited her at her residence at Akabo. We were moved by her plight and we made the first donation of N20, 000 into her account and vigorously campaigned for her welfare and today she is N2mllion richer cosy of compassionate Nigerians from within and outside the country.”
