Aiyedatiwa: Why nigerian youths shun mechanized farming

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has identified land clearing as a major challenge discouraging farmers, especially youths, from embracing mechanised agriculture in Nigeria.

He made the observation on Monday while receiving a delegation from the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), led by the state coordinator, Olusola Ayandokun, at his office in Akure, the state capital.

Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized that addressing the bottlenecks associated with land clearing would encourage more young people to venture into farming.

He also highlighted the importance of land development in advancing food security and pledged his administration’s readiness to partner with NALDA to boost agricultural productivity across the state.

“We know that one of the major expenditures that hinder a lot of farmers from going into mechanized farming or expanding their operations is land clearing.

“I have heard that land clearing is one of the key activities of NALDA, and this is encouraging,” he said.

He saluted the integrated farm estate model initiated by NALDA in other states, stressing that Ondo had similar infrastructure in place, especially in farm settlements that can be revived and upgraded through partnership.

The governor, however, expressed optimism that the collaboration would promote animal husbandry, especially in the rearing of livestocks, where the state has natural advantages.

Remarking, the NALDA Coordinator, Ayandokun, explained that the federal government agency is already focused on reclaiming, opening up farmland, promoting food security, empowering youth and women, and supporting the agricultural value chain.

While explaining Ondo’s suitability for projects involving cocoa, oil palm, goat and rabbit farming, and integrated farm settlements, Ayandokun said that parcels of land had been allocated for pilot projects, and training modules are now in place for farmers.

The NALDA Coordinator also stressed the importance of encouraging every household to engage in some form of backyard farming, whether crop or livestock, to ensure food security at the grassroots level.

“NALDA’s goals include land clearing, preparation and allocation to farmers, as well as establishing integrated farm estates, providing agricultural inputs, promoting animal husbandry, and training,” he said.

Customs launches crackdown on undeclared foreign currency, sensitises airlines on compliance

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intensified its efforts to curb illicit financial flows by sensitising international airline operators on the mandatory declaration of foreign currency by passengers carrying over $10,000.

At a sensitisation session held over the weekend at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Customs officials urged airlines to remind passengers, via in-flight announcements and forms, to declare any cash exceeding the permitted threshold. Passengers who fail to comply risk seizure of funds, investigation, and possible prosecution under Nigeria’s anti-money laundering laws.

Assistant Comptroller of Customs in charge of the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Unit, Salihu Mas’ud, said the exercise is part of a broader strategy to enhance compliance and enforcement.

“We expect higher compliance, and it will strengthen our enforcement mechanism,” Mas’ud said. “It also ensures that defaulters and violators of currency declarations are detected promptly and forwarded for necessary investigation and prosecution.”

He noted that Customs has taken concrete measures to improve enforcement at the airport, including establishing dedicated search rooms and currency declaration points. Announcements are also being made regularly over the airport’s public address system.

Mas’ud added that airline operators have pledged to reinforce these reminders onboard flights. “We have also gotten the commitment of the airline operators to ensure that these announcements are being made on board their flights,” he said.

The NCS also reminded airlines of their obligation to submit electronic manifests (e-Manifests) before landing, which must include full passenger information such as names, countries of origin and destination, and flight numbers. This data, the Service noted, is vital for risk profiling and surveillance.

The sensitisation forum, held in collaboration with other law enforcement and regulatory agencies, emphasised the importance of inter-agency cooperation in combating smuggling, terrorism financing, and illicit financial transactions across Nigeria’s borders.

Mining Marshals commander sues newspaper over alleged defamatory report

The Commander of the Mining Marshals, Attah John Onoja, has filed a defamation suit against a flagship newspaper, seeking ₦2 billion in exemplary damages over a publication he claims misrepresented facts and harmed his reputation.

Filed through his legal counsel, Adeola Adedipe, SAN, the suit pertains to an article published on June 23, 2025, titled “Community alleges involvement of mining marshals in illegal mining”.

Onoja claimed that the report negatively impacted his image and questioned the credibility of the Mining Marshals, a government task force established to combat illegal mining activities across the country.

In court filings, he asked for ₦2 billion in damages, citing reputational harm and the wide reach of the publication.

He expressed concern that the story was published without seeking clarification from him or the agency, a step he believes would have ensured balance and accuracy.

“The activities of the Mining Marshals are conducted transparently, in line with the law and open to public scrutiny,” Onoja stated, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to integrity and national reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

He reiterated that the Mining Marshals remain focused on their mandate to sanitise Nigeria’s mining sector and would not be distracted by what he described as attempts to derail their mission.

  • Group berates Malami over ADC defection, says Tinubu’s critics are political hypocrites

Group berates Malami over ADC defection, says Tinubu’s critics are political hypocrites

The Citizens Alliance for Rule of Law and Justice (CARoLJ) has berated the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), following his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and his recent criticisms of President Bola Tinubu administration.

In a statement released on Sunday in Kaduna and signed by its president, Aminu Jallo, the group urged political actors to reflect on their own public service records before criticising others, stressing that national challenges require collective responsibility and honest dialogue.

Jallo described Malami’s recent remarks on insecurity and economic hardship as surprising, considering his tenure as the AGF.

He noted that while public figures have the right to switch political platforms and express their views, they should do so with a sense of responsibility and consistency.

Malami, who joined the ADC last Wednesday, said the party offers a platform for national renewal and a solution to pressing issues such as insecurity and poverty, especially in the north.

He also criticised the APC-led government’s approach to governance.

However, CARoLJ stated that national recovery should not be reduced to campaign slogans or partisan attacks.

The group emphasised that sustainable reform demands accountability, institutional strengthening, and collaboration, not blame games or political reinvention.

Jallo urged Nigerians to evaluate all political aspirants — including those seeking new mandates — based on their past public service, transparency, and commitment to national development.

The group highlighted the importance of upholding public trust and promoting transparency, particularly in asset recovery, anti-corruption efforts, and rule of law enforcement.

“The focus should be on strengthening institutions, deepening justice sector reforms, and ensuring that no segment of society feels excluded or underserved,” the statement read.

The group concluded by calling for a more constructive political culture, where national progress takes precedence over personal ambition or partisan rivalry.

  • Women coalition urges Senate to Appeal Court ruling reinstating Natasha

Women coalition urges Senate to Appeal Court ruling reinstating Natasha

The Coalition of Concerned Women for Legislative Integrity (CCWLI), a network of over 1,000 women-focused civil society organisations, has called on the Nigerian Senate to urgently appeal the Federal High Court ruling that reinstated Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, the coalition described the court’s verdict as “deeply troubling” and warned it could pose a serious threat to the sanctity of parliamentary discipline and the integrity of democratic institutions.

National President of the coalition, Barr Nana Amina Abdullahi, urged Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other leaders of the red chamber to resist external pressures and uphold the autonomy of the legislature by ensuring accountability within its ranks.

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court had on Friday ruled that the six-month suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was excessive and lacked legal basis.

She ordered her immediate reinstatement, stating that the Senate had no constitutional power to silence a constituency for such an extended period.

However, CCWLI cautioned that allowing the judgment to stand unchallenged could “open the floodgates of indiscipline, misinformation, and abuse of legislative privilege” in the National Assembly.

The group maintained that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension was a consequence of her consistent disregard for Senate rules and its leadership.

“We are women. We are mothers. But we are not blind to recklessness paraded as courage. A woman who gets elected into the hallowed chamber must carry that privilege with honour, not use it to wage vendettas or cast aspersions on her state without due diligence,” Abdullahi said.

The coalition maintained that the Senate acted within its disciplinary powers and described the six-month suspension as “a proportionate response to the gravity of Natasha’s conduct.”

The group also rejected Justice Nyako’s assertion that the suspension infringed on the rights of Kogi Central constituents.

“The people of Kogi Central were not suspended their representative was. And they deserve better than a lawmaker whose interventions often descend into provocation rather than policy,” the statement read.

Abdullahi accused some international organisations and local activists of “weaponising feminism” to shield bad behaviour and undermine institutional standards.

“It is not feminism to excuse indiscipline. It is not women’s empowerment to encourage the abuse of parliamentary immunity. If a male senator had made such allegations without evidence, the punishment would have stood without debate. This selective outrage is hypocritical and dangerous,” she said.

The coalition acknowledged the court’s role in adjudicating disputes but insisted that judicial restraint was needed in matters relating to internal legislative discipline.

They urged the Senate to appeal the judgment all the way to the Supreme Court, saying the long-term health of Nigeria’s democracy depends on clarity over the limits of judicial intervention in legislative processes.

“Any attempt to back down now would amount to surrendering the Senate’s constitutional authority to discipline its members. We are calling on the Senate to file a prompt appeal, not just in defence of the Natasha case, but in defence of its institutional dignity.”

The group further criticised what it described as “a pattern of political exhibitionism” by Akpoti-Uduaghan, accusing her of turning every disciplinary issue into a gendered media spectacle.

“Natasha’s entire political career has been built on confrontation and provocation. It may earn applause on social media, but governance is not performance art,” Abdullahi said.

Reacting to the N5 million fine imposed on Akpoti-Uduaghan by the court for violating its prior gag order, the coalition said it was a “mild but symbolic rebuke” and urged the senator to show more restraint in her public conduct.

“We hope she pays that fine quietly and uses the time to reflect. Democracy is not a theatre for constant drama,” the group said.

The coalition said it will be writing formally to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions and copying all presiding officers to demand a swift move toward filing an appeal.

“Our position is firm: until a higher court says otherwise, the Senate must stand by its decision. That judgment should not be the last word,” Abdullahi declared.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said it has arrested a notorious drug kingpin Ajetsibo Emami popularly known as ‘Warri Kinsman’ on June 28 in Ikeja, Lagos.

Director, Media and Advocacy NDLEA Headquarters Abuja, Femi Babafemi, in a statement yesterday said, Emami was arrested after operatives dismantled his drug trafficking network in a three-day operation leading to the arrest of three other suspects.

Babafemi said items recovered from Emami’s network were 24 jumbo bags containing 681 pouches of Canadian Loud, a strain of cannabis weighing 414.2 kilograms.

He stated that the operatives intercepted cocaine consignments concealed in lipsticks and property title documents going to the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia respectively.

He said the illicit drug consignments were recovered from cargos being prepared for shipment at a courier company in Lagos on July 3 by NDLEA officers of the Directorate of Operations and General Investigation (DOGI) attached to the logistics firm.

He said a total of 420grams of cocaine factory fitted in 84 pieces of female lipsticks heading to the United Kingdom (UK) were seized, while 280grams of the same Class A drug were uncovered in a property title document (Certificate of Occupancy, C of O) being sent to Saudi Arabia.

Accordingly to the statement, a businessman Ajah Johnson Uchenna and his wife Rosemary, have been taken into custody after investigation revealed they run a major illicit drug distribution network in Lagos.

Babafemi said the couple was first arrested on June 13 by operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) in Ojo area of the state and transferred to NDLEA along with 277.5kg skunk.

While they were still being investigated in custody, credible intelligence revealed that the family business was going on in his house, Babafemi said.

This, he said, led to a raid of their home and a packing store where 231kg of same substance was recovered on July 1.

He said three persons arrested during the raid include Uchenna’s daughters – Ngozi and Blessing as well as their family friend Okoro Elijah, who were running the family business in the absence of the couple.

NDLEA operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA Ikeja Lagos on July 2 also intercepted a frequent flyer Aburemi Hysent who specialises in conveying goods for customers from Nigeria to Italy and vice versa.

“He was found to have hidden 7,660 pills of tramadol 225mg and 200mg inside food items packed among other goods he was conveying to Italy. He claimed he was to be paid the sum of 800 euros upon successful delivery of the drug consignment in Italy.

In another operation at the Lagos airport, a total of 52 pieces of the travelers cheques concealed in children books, worth 17,700,000 Australian dollars, going to Malaysia through Istanbul on a Turkish Airlines flight were on Friday intercepted by NDLEA operatives at the export shed of the airport while a freight agent, Bolarinwa Saheed was arrested.

“The travellers’ cheques suspected to be counterfeit and the suspect will be transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation.
