Two die, six injured in Auchi Poly

Two students of the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, were reportedly killed and six others injured at the weekend when suspected thugs invaded the venue of the Student Union Government election.

A viral video sighted by The Nation yesterday showed students scampering for safety and arriving to confront the suspected thugs.

It was gathered that the suspects stabbed the six students before carting and fleeing the scene with some ballot boxes.

A student, who pleaded anonymity, said the election was going on smoothly until the suspected thugs arrived.

He said:  “There were two notable candidates, one is known as Verify, while the other, called Voice, is a native of Akpekpe in Auchi.

“Voice was counting on the fact that he is from and thought that he will enjoy the support of the notable people in Auchi to emerge victorious. However, the students stood behind and voted for Verify massively.

“Midway into the election, the agents of Voice found out that their candidate would not win. They raised an alarm, and the local boys stormed the area, snatched the ballot boxes and dispersed the students by shooting into the air and using tear gas.

“This is a bad development for our school, and I hope it will not snowball into something more brutal.

Edo Police spokesman, Moses Yamu, said he has not received any report of such an incident.

The institution is yet to appoint a spokesman since the death of its last spokesman in 2022.

Three Naval officers, 42 others die in auto, boat accidents

    • Two officers, one Youth Corps member missing

Tragedy struck over the weekend claiming 45 lives in multiple roads and boat accidents across the country.

The Zaria-Kano Highway in Kano recorded the highest number of deaths with 21 casualties.

The casualties figure was followed by a lone crash involving a Mitsubishi bus on Ijebu-Ode–Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State with 10 persons lost their lives.

In Lagos, eight persons were yesterday confirmed dead after a commercial bus collided with a truck in the Badagry area of Lagos.

Six persons – three personnel and three civilians attached to the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS), Delta, who had embarked for a free medical rhapsody at Okerenkoko, Warri South West council area of Delta State were announce dead a gunboat mishap.

The Zaria-Kano high-way accident occurred at Kasuwar Dogo in Dakatsalle, around 8:20am yesterday. It involved a heavy-duty DAF truck and a commercial Toyota Hiace passenger bus.

Spokesman of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Assistant Corps Marshall Olusegun Ogungbemide, said preliminary investigations revealed that the crash was “caused by route violation on the part of the commercial Toyota Hiace Bus driver.”

He said that the driver “contravened established traffic regulations and drove against traffic flow”, resulting in a fatal head-on collision with the oncoming truck.

“Regrettably, out of the 24 people involved in the crash, a total of 21 persons—comprising 19 male adults and two female adults — were killed in the crash, while the remaining three were rescued with injuries,” Ogungbemide said.

He stated that the victims’ remains had been deposited at Nasarawa Hospital in Kano.

Spokesman for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) in Ogun State, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the accident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday at Ome Bridge, Awa, along Ijebu-Ode–Ibadan highway in Ijebu North Local Government Area.

He stated that the lone crash involved a Mitsubishi bus, marked EJ829-LSR, which was conveying 15 passengers at the time.

According to Akinbiyi, seven male and three female passengers died. Three others were injured, while a toddler and one adult escaped unhurt.

He said preliminary findings indicate that over-speeding and wrongful overtaking led to the accident.

“Eyewitnesses said the driver wrongly overtook another vehicle at high speed and could not regain control after noticing an oncoming vehicle. The driver veered off the road, hit an abandoned gravel pile beside the bridge, and plunged the vehicle into the river,” Akinbiyi explained.

He said the deceased were taken to Ijebu-Ode General Hospital’s morgue, while the injured were also being treated at the same facility.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Taofiq Adebayo, said the Lagos accident occurred at Atura Bus Stop near Badagry before dawn.

Adebayo said the accident involved a 16-seater commercial Mazda bus marked KJA811YF and a DAF truck, marked T14636LA.

“The tragic accident instantly claimed the lives of eight passengers, including the driver of the bus and his conductor, casting a somber pall over the Badagry axis and leaving the community in profound mourning and collective grief,” Adebayo said.

He said LASTMA operatives, officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), the Police at Morogbo Division and soldiers from 244 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Ibereko Barracks, coordinated the rescue operation.

“Their timely intervention led to the successful extraction of eight surviving passengers, all of whom sustained varying degrees of trauma. These casualties were immediately evacuated to the General Hospital in Badagry in an FRSC vehicle for critical medical attention. Preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the commercial bus lost control while navigating at a perilously high speed, leading to a collision with a DAF truck. The resultant impact was described as cataclysmic, leaving little chance for evasion or survival for several occupants of the bus,” he added.

In Warri boat mishap, the boat identified as “EPENAL Gunboat DE 24, capsized on Thursday at about 7:45pm at position LAT 05° 36.408’N / LONG 005° 11.982’E,” directly in front of Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), claiming six lives.

Lieutenant D. K. Nehemiah, Sub-Lieutenant Kwala, and Miss Uche, a corps member, remained missing as of the time of filing the report with rescue efforts still ongoing.

The sad incident occurred just after the naval team wrapped up the first day of the two-day humanitarian exercise in the riverine community.

The vessel was reportedly conveying 15 people — nine serving Navy personnel and six civilians, including National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members—from Forward Operating Base (FOB) Escravos, to their hotel accommodation in Arunton community, when it sank.

It was gathered that the Nigerian Navy’s swift search and rescue team recovered 12 persons from the waters, six, out of whom three were serving naval personnel and the other three were civilians, were confirmed dead by CNL’s clinic Chief Medical Officer on duty, when they were rushed there for first aid.

As of Friday morning, divers had recovered the bodies of Commander JO Eidangbe, Petty Officer Abolarinwa, Ordinary Seaman Tena, Miss Chinenye (NYSC member), Miss Dorcas (NYSC member) and Master Destiny (boat driver).

The naval medical team had earlier, on Thursday, been received warmly at Okerenkoko community hall, Gbaramatu Kingdom, where the Commander of NNS Delta, Commodore Abdulazeez Zubairu (represented by Navy Captain Ayi Archibong, Executive Officer NNS Delta), had reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to national security and community engagement.

The free medical outreach—held in collaboration with EMT Foundation—was part of the Navy’s non-kinetic strategy under Operation Delta Sanity II, as directed by the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla.

Despite the unfortunate incident, the outreach was concluded on Friday, amidst a gloomy atmosphere.

Kaduna to roll out free bus service for workers, students

In a significant move to cushion the impact of rising transport costs, the Kaduna State Government has announced the commencement of free bus services for civil servants, retirees, and students under its Kaduna Subsidised Transport Scheme (KSTS).

The Director General of the Kaduna State Transport Regulatory Authority (KADSTRA), Inuwa Ibrahim, disclosed in a statement on Sunday that the initiative will run free for the first six months, after which a 60 percent fare subsidy will apply.

Beneficiaries include students in public and private schools from primary to tertiary levels, state civil servants, retirees, and security personnel from recognised agencies, provided they present proper identification.

To prevent abuse of the scheme, Inuwa noted that civil servants must present valid staff ID cards linked to their National Identification Number (NIN), while students are required to wear full school uniforms to board the buses.

Some buses are expected to begin operations on Monday, a move Inuwa described as part of Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to improving the welfare of citizens, particularly workers, senior citizens, and students.

The bus services will initially operate along three major routes: Rigachikun–Kawo–Kasuwa–Sabo (and return), Rigachikun–Kawo–Independence Way–Yakowa Road (and return), Tudun Wada–Poly Road–Sokoto Road–Kawo (and return).

Inuwa cautioned commuters to maintain order at bus stops, warning against rushing or jumping queues, and stressed that law enforcement will be deployed to ensure smooth and safe operations.

The scheme follows President Bola Tinubu’s commissioning of 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses in Kaduna on June 19, laying the groundwork for the state’s transport transformation initiative.

Israel, also known as “Kendowell,” was apprehended at a hideout in Igbolodu/Okanlawon Street, a student-dominated area in Owo, following actionable intelligence. “On July 1, 2025, at about 4:30 p.m., our operatives from ‘B’ Division, Owo, launched a raid that led to the arrest of the suspect who has long been a menace to students and residents,” CP Lawal said.

  • FACT-CHECK: False! Woman in viral picture beaten by male assailants, not daughter-in-law

FACT-CHECK: False! Woman in viral picture beaten by male assailants, not daughter-in-law

Claim: A Facebook page (Female in Africa) on June 1, 2025, posted a picture of a woman with bloody stripes on her back with the claim that the woman was beaten by her daughter-in-law.

Verdict: False. Our findings reveal that the woman identified as Peace Cosmos was beaten by Kingsley Christopher Etukudoh and some of his friends.

    Full Text

Gender based-violence (GBV) remains a recurrent and deeply rooted problem in Nigeria. It is fuelled by harmful cultural practices, weak law enforcement, and widespread impunity. Women and girls are affected mainly by it through sexual violence, domestic abuse, child marriage, and other forms of violence.

Lagos‑based Womanity Index found that 63% of Nigerians have either experienced GBV or know someone who has. In recent years, GBV awareness in Nigeria has improved, primarily due to efforts by various groups, individuals, the media, and the government.

Community sensitisation, school outreaches, and survivor support services have helped push these laws, such as the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP) and the Child Rights Act, to bring GBV discussions into the public space. However, not all states have domesticated or enforced them.

On social media, GBV cases are reported daily, and the government has taken up some of these cases to serve as a warning to others

Despite these efforts to curtail gender violence, a Facebook user, Female in Africa, shared a picture showing an injury-laced back of a woman, alleging that her daughter-in-law caused the wounds..

“A disturbing incident has been reported in Cross River, where a woman allegedly assaulted her mother-in-law after asking her to leave the house, claiming she had overstayed her welcome (sic),” part of the post caption reads.

“The altercation reportedly occurred just days after the husband travelled to Lagos on a business trip. What are your thoughts on this situation?” the claimant’s caption questioned.

The post, published on June 1, 2025, has been shared 58 times.

Several Facebook accounts also posted the same claim, here, here, here, and here.

Given the nature and virality of the claim, which portrays the notion of a woman inflicting injury on another woman and the need for public awareness of gender based violence, DUBAWA decided to fact-check it.

    Verification

We conducted a reverse image search using Google Lens. The result revealed that the picture had appeared on a Facebook post a day before it was used in the claim.

On May 31, 2025, a Facebook page called “Ibommobile News” published a press statement signed by the Akwa Ibom Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare, where the picture in the claim was used as the featured image.

In the press release, one Kingsly Christopher Etukudoh and friends were said to have attacked a lady identified as Peace Cosmos, a resident of Nto Nso community in Ika local government area of Akwa Ibom.

The statement, however, did not state why Peace was attacked.

On June 2, 2025, NTA Uyo, during its News at 10 bulletin, relayed a statement signed by the Ika local government area chairman, Utibe Nwoko. The report, alongside the picture, was broadcast at the 12-minute mark on the news.

Other social media platforms also posted the statement.

John Timfon, Akwa Ibom police spokesperson, told DUBAWA that Etukudoh is a youth leader and was contracted with nine others by a relative of the woman in the image to beat her up over a family dispute.

“Information at the Command’s disposal has it that a relative of the woman organised with the Youth Leader and nine others to beat up the woman because of a family issue,” she said in a message to DUBAWA.

Stating that the investigation is ongoing, Timfon clarified that Etujudoh’s client is not the woman’s daughter-in-law, as alleged in the claim, but did not specify the nature of the family issue.

    Conclusion

The claim is false. Peace Cosmos was attacked and beaten by Kingsley Christopher Etukudoh, not her daughter-in-law.

Police smashes human trafficking gang, rescue 40 Ghanaians in Ondo

    • Three suspects arrested

The Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has busted a transnational human trafficking syndicate operating in Akure, the state capital, in a major crackdown on trans-border criminal activities.

The operation, led by the Tactical Intelligence Response Squad (TIRS) of the State Police Command, resulted in the rescue of 40 Ghanaians allegedly lured into Nigeria with false assurances of lucrative jobs and visa to American countries.

The foregoing was disclosed in a statement issued by the spokesperson for the command, Olayinka Ayanlade, in Akure yesterday.

Ayanlade said the operation carried out by TIRS team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Lekan Labi, followed a formal petition forwarded through the INTERPOL Liaison Office at Force Headquarters in Abuja.

He explained that the petition had requested urgent intervention over a case of transnational human trafficking involving a Ghanaian citizen allegedly lured to Nigeria with promise of employment by an unidentified associate.

According to him, the petition specifically highlighted the case of the Ghanaian national, David Angerinya, who was reportedly lured into the country in 2024 with promises of employment.

He revealed that the police were able to arrest three suspects — Hayford Nyamekye, Awine Alex and Kojo Felix — in connection with the crime.

Ayanlade said: “Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects are part of a larger transnational trafficking syndicate that specialises in deceiving unsuspecting individuals, particularly from neighbouring West African countries, into travelling to Nigeria with false assurances of lucrative job opportunities and visa arrangements to Canada and other Western nations.

“The victim, David Angerinya, was successfully rescued during the operation.

“Alarmingly, an additional thirty-nine (39) Ghanaian nationals were discovered to have fallen victim to this same network.

“Many of them were found without valid travel documents, while those who had any presented expired ones.”

He explained that all arrested suspects were in police custody, where they were cooperating with ongoing investigations.

He also said that efforts were on to apprehend the owners and caretakers of the buildings where the victims were harbored.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Adebowale Lawal, condemned the action of the syndicate, reiterating the unwavering commitment of the state’s police command to combating human trafficking and all forms of transnational organised crime.

He, however, urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report all suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency contact lines.
