    13 murdered in Anambra community

Thirteen persons reportedly from Ebonyi state were allegedly murdered by gunmen in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The attack, which happened between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m on Monday was said to have left the affected families and the Ebonyi diaspora in mourning.

Following the incident, the Association of Non-Indigenes in Anambra State (ANIAS) has condemned the heinous act, calling for thorough investigation into the massacre.

ANIAS President, Prince Chigozie Nweke, in a statement commiserated with the bereaved families.

He urged Governor Chukwuma Soludo to deploy all state resources to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

A survivor, Mr. Augustine Odom, chairman of the Ebonyi community in Ogboji, described the attack as sudden and unprovoked.

He said the community was holding its regular monthly meeting when the assailants struck, accusing them of holding a meeting against them.

“The attackers demanded the group’s minute book, seized it, and then opened fire on the participants, killing 13 members on the spot,” he said.

Odom and the treasurer survived with gunshot wounds and are currently receiving treatment.

Prince Nweke emphasized the need for the government to assert its authority and utilize all security networks to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

Lagos begins enforcement of single-use plastics ban

The Lagos State Government has commenced enforcement of its ban on single-use plastics (SUPs) below 40 microns, warning that there will be no reversal of the policy.

Speaking at a news conference in Lagos yesterday, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasised that any market or store found storing or selling such plastics would be sealed, the items confiscated, and offenders prosecuted in accordance with the state’s environmental laws.

“There will be no going back from July 1 on the enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics less than 40 microns in Lagos State,” he said.

Wahab listed the items affected by the ban to include styrofoam packs, banned due to their harmful environmental impacts; plastic straws, prohibited to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainability; disposable plastic cups and cutlery; as well as lightweight nylon bags, banned to minimise environmental pollution.

He explained that the ministry had embarked on extensive awareness campaigns prior to the enforcement.

“When we announced the ban on styrofoam food containers in January 2024, we also informed everyone that, starting from January 2025, certain categories of SUPs would be banned,” he said.

The commissioner noted that following a series of meetings and representations with stakeholders, the state government granted a six-month grace period, which expired on June 30.

Taskforce arrest 18,000 suspects in one year

Over 18,000 suspects have been arrested, 1,019 vehicles  and 16,600 commercial motorcycles seized, and  several criminal hideouts cleared by the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Taskforce) in the last one year.

Taskforce Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele revealed this at a media parley yesterday while reeling out the agency’s scorecard under his watch.

According to Akerele, the agency has been able to enforce the government’s drive for a cleaner Lagos by dismantling illegal shanties and other structures that constituted environmental nuisance.

According to Akerele, the achievements were the result of renewed collaboration, proactive strategies, and intelligence-led enforcement, all executed with a strong sense of professionalism and public engagement.

“Between June 2024 and June 2025, we arrested 14,087 suspects across notorious black spots such as Oshodi, Mushin, Iju-Ishaga Railway, Lagos Island, Obalende, and Marina.

“Out of these, 1,287 were released after proper screening while 12,999 were arraigned. This has led to a significant reduction in criminal activities in these locations,” he said.

    • 10 terrorists along Nigeria- Cameroon border neutralised

Troops of Operation FASAN YAMA, a military operation against bandits/terrorists in the Northwest, supported by Hybrid Forces and the Nigerian Air Force have killed a terrorist kingpin, Yellow Danbokkolo, during a fierce battle in Sokoto state.

The Director of Defence Media Operation, Maj-Gen Markus Kangye, announced this in a statement yesterday.

Maj-Gen Markus Kangye also said that troops of Operation Hadin Kai in Northeast Nigeria in collaboration with the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJNTF) have killed 10 Boko Haram/Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) during a fierce battle along Rann – Gamboru Ngala axis, close to the Nigeria – Cameroon border.

According to him, Danbokkolo’s death came nearly a day after the military killed Ali Kachala Kawaje, a terrorist bomb expert Machika, Dan Muhammad, and 38 other terrorist commanders in Niger State airstrikes.

Maj-Gen Kangye had hinted that the troops were closing in on other wanted terrorists, when he announced the killing of Kachalla and 38 others terrorists, last Friday.

He stated that Danbokkolo succumbed to gunshot wounds after his fierce encounter with troops in Shinkafi Local Government of Sokoto state, last week.

Danbokkolo was said to be much more dreaded than notorious bandit Bello Turji.

Danbokkolo was reported to have masterminded the December 2021 arson on travellers in Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, during which all the passengers were burnt to death.

According to the defence spokesman, military troops were in their hunt for Turji, whom he said will also meet his waterloo soon.

“Our exultant troops of Operation FASAN YAMA with this renewed resolve are on the hunt for Bello Turji, who has been in hiding,” he said.

Kangye said the Nigeria- Cameroon border operation was strategically designed and executed to flush out remnants of Boko Haram/ISAWP terrorists operating within the border communities.

According to him, troops, acting on credible intelligence, “masterfully” stormed the terrorists’ hideout between Rann and Gamboru, resulting in an intense gun battle, where 10 terrorists met their waterloo, as a result of the troops superior firepower.

“After the firefight, a huge cache of arms and ammunition were recovered from the scene, including some quantity of anti-aircraft ammunition,” Kangye said.

“The operation was part of a broader strategy to dominate the Southern Lake Chad axis and prevent cross-border movement of BH/ISWAP terrorists.”

He said several arms and ammunition were recovered from the terrorists, which were being subjected to further technical analysis, “while search efforts are ongoing to locate possible escapees and other terrorists’ hideouts in the area.”

DHQ takes delivery of 84 CNG-powered vehicles to enhance operations

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), have taken delivery of 84 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered vehicles to enhance operations.

The vehicles, comprising 20 buses, 50 Jet Lander pickups, and 14 Jet Mover Executive buses, were converted in collaboration with the Presidential CNG Initiative (Pi-CNG).

Speaking yesterday at the vehicles’ inauguration in Abuja, the Minister of Defence (State), Bello Matawalle, stated that the conversion aims to reduce operational fuel costs for the Armed Forces amid ongoing security challenges.

He said the initiative was a clear and strategic step in the journey of the nation towards energy sustainability, economic efficiency and environmental resilience, which was a “direct fulfillment of President Bola Tinubu’s strategic vision to reposition Nigeria as a global player in clean energy adoption and to serve the public sector on the front line of climate-conscious governance.”

The minister emphasized the urgent need to adopt cleaner and more efficient alternatives, leveraging Nigeria’s abundant natural gas reserves.

“It is therefore, both logical and visionary, that we harness these God-given resources to power our means of transportation,” he said.

“By transitioning a version of Armed Forces vehicles to CNGP, while reducing operational fuel costs, it can play and contribute to national effort.

“To cut down these greenhouse gas emissions and meet our global environmental objectives, we are also demonstrating innovation and adaptability in military logistics and mobility.”

Matawalle commended the military for leading the public sector transition to cleaner energy, noting that the transition was not a one-off event, but the beginning of a long-term systematic change.

“Therefore, the Armed Forces must plan for the seamless integration of sustainability and sustainable energy solutions into logistic operations and procurement.

“We must make sure that the overall energy efficiency is the same as the general energy efficiency, and that the most important thing is the energy efficiency,” the minister said.

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, stated that the transition to CNG vehicles underscores the armed forces’ ongoing transformation, commitment to modernizing military infrastructure, enhancing operational efficiency, and adopting sustainable solutions aligned with global best practices.

He added that this milestone marks a significant step toward environmental sustainability, energy security, and technological innovation.

The CDS said the introduction of the CNG into the defence ecosystem, was a clear demonstration of the Federal Government’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions, enhancing fuel efficiency, and ensuring cost-effective service delivery.

“In doing so, we enhance operational effectiveness while supporting national developmental goals,” he said.

    • Falana: new law a game-changer

Lagos State House of Assembly has expressed concerns over Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s proposal to delay the implementation of the recently amended Local Government Administration Law.

The law was set to take effect immediately but is now proposed to start next month.

Rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN), has, however, lauded the new Law, describing it as a game-changer that could redefine democratic governance at the grassroots.

The Assembly has summoned key officials, including the Solicitor-General, Attorney-General, Commissioner for Local Government, and Director of Litigation, to explain the rationale behind the proposed postponement.

Lawmakers have condemned the executive’s attempt to delay the law’s enforcement, asserting that no executive order can override an existing statutory law.

Sani Okanlawon (Kosode 1) asserted that no executive order could override an existing statutory law, while Dipo Ajomale (Oshodi 2) questioned the timing and necessity of the proposed delay, noting that the governor had already signed the law on May 7, 2025.

Sa’ad Olumoh also stressed the supremacy of legislative enactments over executive directives.

Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, emphasised the supremacy of legislative enactments over executive directives, noting that such executive-legislative frictions could test the resilience and clarity of enacted laws.

The Assembly has summoned officials from the Oto-Awori Local Council Development Area (LCDA) over a leadership crisis, following the death of the council’s chairman.

The council’s Vice Chairman, Kareem Abiodun, has declined to step in as acting chairman, citing his interest in contesting the upcoming election.

Obasa has declared that Abiodun must either resign to pursue his political ambition or fulfill his duty by stepping into the leadership role, warning him to exercise caution in handling council resources.

The Assembly’s actions aim to ensure transparency and accountability in the implementation of the Local Government Administration Law and resolve the leadership crisis in Oto Awori Council.

Falana said the new law not only aligns with the 1999 Constitution but also offers a robust framework for tenure regulation, succession, and legal continuity—critical issues that have plagued local government administration across the country.

According to him, the legislation sets a new constitutional benchmark that other states should study and adopt in order to sanitize local governance.

One of the key highlights of the 2025 Law is its firm position on tenure limits for local government chairmen. Section 27(5) states that any person elected to complete the unexpired term of a previous office holder through a by-election shall be deemed to have served a full term.

Falana noted that this provision addresses a long-standing loophole in the repealed Cap L82 Law of 2015, which failed to clarify whether such completion of term counted toward the two-term limit.

  • Sanwo-Olu to inaugurate two major roads Wednesday

Sanwo-Olu to inaugurate two major roads Wednesday

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will tomorrow inaugurate two major road projects aimed at enhancing connectivity, easing traffic congestion, and boosting economic activities across the state.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, who disclosed this in a statement yesterday, said the roads to be inaugurated are Abaranje Road in Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area (LCDA) and Babajide Sanwo-Olu Road (formerly Old Dopemu Road) in Agege Local Government Area.

Omotoso said the projects reflect the government’s commitment to providing infrastructure that supports inclusive economic growth and improves the quality of life of residents.

“In the past few months, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has handed over 36 roads and five bridges to Lagosians,” he said.

According to him, the completion of these roads aligns with the state’s strategic efforts to build sustainable communities and reduce traffic gridlocks.

He explained that Babajide Sanwo-Olu Road was reconstructed by the Lagos State Public Works Corporation to serve as a strategic bypass cutting across the administrative boundaries of Agege and Alimosho Local Government Areas. The road links Akowonjo Road, Old Ipaja Road, and Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

Omotoso noted that the delivery of these projects has significantly improved road connectivity, eased traffic flow, reduced travel time, and eliminated perennial flooding in the areas.

“Similarly, the Abaranje Road in Igando-Ikotun LCDA was rebuilt to enhance accessibility in one of the largest settlements within the Alimosho axis. Also, we have enhanced intermodal transportation and positively impacted the socio-economic wellbeing of residents.”

The commissioner reaffirmed that the government remains resolute in its commitment to continually upgrade existing roads and construct new ones in fulfilment of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s promises to the people of Lagos State.

  • Lagos commences enforcement of single-use plastics ban

Lagos commences enforcement of single-use plastics ban

The Lagos State Government has commenced enforcement of its ban on single-use plastics (SUPs) below 40 microns, warning that there will be no reversal of the policy.

Speaking at a news conference in Lagos yesterday, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab emphasized that any market or store found storing or selling such plastics would be sealed, the items confiscated, and offenders prosecuted in accordance with the state’s environmental laws.

Wahab emphasised that the ban was primarily to safeguard the health and well-being of residents and to protect the environment.

“Many believed that the state government would succumb to pressure and blackmail laced with half-truths to consider another shift in date. This will not happen. We do not intend to join issues with any group or association selfishly interested in profiteering,” he stated.

He assured that no jobs would be lost during the transition, adding that more employment opportunities would be created when producers and distributors embrace safer alternatives that ensure environmental sustainability.

According to him, despite an 18-month moratorium, producers who failed to embrace alternatives had shown no intention of complying with the law.

“Lagos State has not banned the production of all categories of plastics. However, producers and distributors of the banned items have the option of selling them outside our state.

“As a coastal state, Lagos realises the enormous dangers that styrofoam packs and SUPs of less than 40 microns pose to our drainage channels and ecosystem. These blockages compel the government to channel funds meant for other social services towards clearing debris from drains,” he said.

Wahab added that enforcement of the ban would significantly reduce the volume of waste generated in the state and at its various landfill sites.

Meanwhile, Sustainable Research and Action for Environmental Development (SRADev Nigeria) has commended the Lagos State Government for what it described as a monumental stride in environmental protection.

In a statement on its Facebook page yesterday, the group described the policy as a critical win in Nigeria’s fight against plastic pollution and a major leap towards achieving a circular economy while protecting public health.

“This bold policy move is a critical win in Nigeria’s fight against plastic pollution and a major leap towards achieving a circular economy and protecting public health and the environment. At SRADev Nigeria, we celebrate this milestone and call on other states to follow suit. Together, we can beat plastic pollution and build a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Nigeria,” it stated.

Thomas said the brand was excited about the opportunities in Lagos, noting that the energy, creativity, and fashion sense of young people in the state align perfectly with the Adidas identity.

“We are very excited about what we see in Lagos. The energy, creativity, and fashion sense of young people here are unmatched, and it aligns perfectly with the Adidas identity.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu welcomed Adidas’ growing investment in Lagos, describing the state as the ideal destination for global brands seeking sustainable growth in Africa.

“Lagos is a natural choice for a brand like Adidas. We are a state of over 20 million residents, with more than 60 per cent being youth, vibrant, energetic, and in tune with global trends.

“We look forward to seeing Adidas contribute not just to commerce, but to talent development, community building, and job creation. Lagos is open for more.”
