Police recover 50 rounds of anti-aircraft ammunition after bandits attack

    • Troops rescued victim, neutralizes bandit in failed kidnap attempt

Police operatives in Rijau Division of Niger State, working alongside local vigilantes, have recovered 50 rounds of anti-aircraft live ammunition believed to have been abandoned by fleeing bandits.

The ammunition was discovered on Saturday during a security sweep of Biyemu forest in the aftermath of a military airstrike launched following a deadly bandit attack on Watari village earlier that week.

According to the Niger state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the attack on Watari village via Rijau and its environs occurred in the morning when armed bandits invaded the area, rustling an unconfirmed number of cattle.

The attack prompted a swift response from the military, which carried out targeted aerial bombardments across the Sulupawa axis, stretching from Rijau to the neighboring communities of Kumbashi and Kakihum in Mariga Local Government Area.

“The bombardment scattered the bandits and caused significant casualties among their ranks. It was during a follow-up reconnaissance operation that we discovered the anti-aircraft ammunition hidden deep in Biyemu forest,” Abiodun stated.

Security analysts who spoke to our reporter expressed concern over the recovery of the anti-aircraft rounds as they pointed that such high-caliber ammunition is typically used against helicopters or low-flying aircraft and signals the rising sophistication of weapons in the hands of criminal elements.

“If the bandits had managed to deploy the ammunition which is believed to be compatible with heavy machine guns or improvised anti-aircraft devices, it could have posed a serious threat to aerial patrols and civilian aircraft in the region.

“This recovery is not just about seizing ammunition. It has likely prevented future attacks on military aircraft and stopped the criminals from expanding their tactics. Anti-aircraft rounds in the hands of non-state actors could be catastrophic,” Lawal Mohammed, a security analyst said.

Abiodun stated that In response to the incident, police and vigilante units have intensified surveillance and security patrols in strategic locations, especially around border communities vulnerable to bandit incursions.

In a related development, Troops of operation safe haven OPSH said it has intercepted a kidnap incidence, rescued the victim, neutralized one of the bandits and recovered arms in Plateau state.

A statement by Major Samson Zhakom Media Information Officer of the OPSH noted that as part of efforts to flush out criminal elements from own Joint Operations Area, on Wednesday, troops of 3 Division/Operation SAFE HAVEN conducting the ongoing Operation LAFIYAN JAMA’A laid ambush at the crossing points of bandits along Kampani Zurak-Sabon Gari road in Wase Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State

Major Zhakom said: “The operation was based on credible information about the movement of bandits who kidnapped a resident. During the operation, troops made contact with the criminals conveying their victim on a motorcycle, and neutralised one of the criminals while others abandoned the victim and fled into the surrounding bushes. Consequently, troops rescued the 45-year-old victim identified as Mr Adamu Alhaji Nuhu and recovered one fabricated pistol, one pistol magazine, 4 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, one Boxer motorcycle, and other sundry items abandoned by the criminals.”

  • Ambulance shortage hampering our operations, Red Cross cries out

Ambulance shortage hampering our operations, Red Cross cries out

The Nigeria Red Cross Society (NRCS), Lagos Branch, has raised an urgent alarm over its inability to effectively respond to emergencies across the state due to the lack of functional ambulances

A situation the organization described as “deeply challenging and life-threatening.”

Branch Secretary of the Lagos Red Cross Olakunke Lasisi, said the last operational ambulance was a donation from former Governor of Lagos State Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

That vehicle, according to him, served the organization for over a decade before breaking down permanently two years ago.

“It was difficult for us to keep fixing the ambulance because you can imagine the number of years it has spent. It served us well, but now, it’s completely packed up,” Lasisi said.

The absence of functional ambulances, he noted, has severely limited the Red Cross’s ability to respond promptly to emergencies — from road accidents to public health crises and disaster scenes — leaving the organization increasingly handicapped in its auxiliary role to government agencies.

“People trust the Red Cross. They know we are there to save lives — during peace and conflict. And in conflict time, the value for life is even higher. So being incapacitated at such a time is a risk to everyone,” Lasisi added.

Lasisi emphasized that during critical emergencies, the neutrality and international nature of the Red Cross allows it to access communities where other government-aligned agencies may be rejected or misunderstood.

“There are situations where some agencies can’t go in because they are perceived to be part of the government. But the Red Cross is trusted. We are received without suspicion,” he explained.

He requested the support of the Lagos State Government for at least six new ambulances to be strategically stationed across the state’s emergency-prone areas.

“We are calling on organizations declaring huge profits — the gas companies, the banks, and other large institutions — to support us. Red Cross belongs to the people. When we have ambulances and trained responders, we save more lives,” Lasisi pleaded.

Red Cross Disaster Management Officer for the branch, Ige Oladimeji, highlighted the devastating effects of operating without ambulances, citing previous national incidents including the #EndSARS protests, where a lack of mobility hampered the organization’s capacity to intervene effectively.

“We would have done better if we had an ambulance to move with during that time. It’s painful because people were looking up to us,” Oladimeji recalled.

He added that the organization is not only in need of ambulances for disasters but also to participate in public safety campaigns, especially during festive periods.

According to him, Red Cross divisions remain active across all local governments in Lagos and continue to provide online support where physical response is limited.

“We’re not just asking the government; we’re asking all Nigerians. Red Cross is not an NGO — we are a humanitarian organization backed by the constitution. For us to fulfill our duty to protect the vulnerable, we need support,” he concluded.

Despite the overwhelming challenges, the Lagos Red Cross continues to collaborate with agencies like the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), receiving training in advanced rescue techniques.

“This is a major milestone. From the kick-off to the training of enumerators, working group inaugurations, and live demonstrations in Makoko, every step has led to today. We are proud to begin implementation here in Lagos,” she said.

She added that Lagos was allocated eight million out of the 80 million cook stoves to be distributed nationwide and noted that the pilot was designed to ensure direct impact in underserved communities before the full-scale rollout.

“Makoko is the first to benefit from this new clean energy trajectory. It’s a proud moment. We’re grateful to the people of Makoko for receiving us warmly. Among 80 million Nigerian households targeted for this transition, Makoko leads the way,” she said.

According to her, the project has been in development since late last year, involving consultations, stakeholder engagement, and public sensitisation.

Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Ope George, described the initiative as a strategic intervention targeting energy poverty, indoor pollution, and environmental degradation.

“Traditional cooking methods remain one of the highest contributors to household emissions. Clean cookstoves are not only environmentally safer—they also protect our women and children from long-term health risks,” he said.

He commended the Office of Climate Change and Circular Economy and the technical partner, GreenPlinth Africa, for translating policy into practical solutions.
