  • Slain subsidy protester’s father seeks assistance

Slain subsidy protester’s father seeks assistance

Since the death of our son, nothing in life matters to me. Our son’s demise is still like a dream to my wife and I. There was no one to call us anymore to say some amount has been deposited into our account. I remember during the last Yuletide; I was overwhelmed because I had my children with me. Ahh! my joy was indeed cut short; he was our breadwinner.”

These were the words of Mr Samuel Abe, whose son, Ademola, was shot dead on January 9, 2012 in Ogba, by a former Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Segun Fabunmi, during fuel subsidy protest.

Fabunmi was on Monday found guilty of the offence and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. He was also convicted for shooting and injuring three others; Alimi Abubakar, Egbujor Samuel and Chizorba Odoh.

In a phone conversation yesterday, Mr Abe, who resides in Ilesa, Osun State, said he had nothing to say on the verdict because it would not bring back his son.

Reliving his last encounter with his son, the 70-year-old man said: “Ademola kept assuring me to keep calm that everything is going to turn out well in the end. I prayed for him as I used to when he left Ilesa on January 5. That was the last I saw of him. He spoke with me days after and he sounded well. I had no premonition. On the morning of the incident, as I woke up, something hit me hard on my thigh and I asked myself what the matter was. It wasn’t up to 15 minutes someone came to our house and said Ademola wasn’t feeling fine and left. I couldn’t ask him the cause of the sickness. When I eventually got the news, everything changed. I cried for months because so many things kept going through my mind. Life hasn’t been the smoothest of rides for my family. We have been managing. My last two children have stopped schooling. We need help. The former Ifako/Ijaiye Local government chairman, Oloruntoba Oke, tried his best. We need assistance. We are not okay.”

The retired civil servant said his wife, Funmilayo, in her mid 60s, is still in shock.

He said she is nursing a leg injury but she still sells biscuit in front of their house.

“My wife is now a shadow of herself. She hardly talks. We don’t even have a kobo to take her to the hospital,” he said.

The President, Ward A and C Youths in Ogba Community, Lagos, Ismail Olajide (small), who monitored the case said the youths were satisfied with the judgment, adding: “Though we faced a lot of challenges during the period. Even some of us who started the case left in between. We became security conscious. At a point, we couldn’t sleep in our houses for the fear of police. I am glad it is over. I just feel the family should be compensated because they lost their bread winner. They are not buoyant at all.

“I thank the former governor of this state, Babatunde Fashola, his advice, really worked for the community. The former Ifako/Ijaiye chairman  catered for the deceased’s family in so many ways.”

She made the pledge at the Christmas and Family fun fare hosted by Ourcraft Venture in collaboration with the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK).

Mrs Ambode enjoined children to imbibe the spirit of Christmas  by showing kindness.

She cautioned that the season should be celebrated with every sense of responsibility and decency.

“Much as we love our jobs and businesses as hard working people, it is equally important that we cultivate the habit of relaxation for healthy living. By this, we live healthy and longer, to enjoy the money we make. The greatest happiness is family happiness,” she said.

LASPARK Managing Director Dr Titi Anibaba thanked Mrs Ambode for identifing with the children, saying the gesture will lift the spirit of the children and give them a sense of belonging and made them feel important.

  • I didn’t use police to harass estate mates, says Tosan

I didn’t use police to harass estate mates, says Tosan

THE producer of ‘Crime Fighter’, a television programme, Chief Aisha Tosan has debunked reports that she used the police to harass one Greg Odutayo,  a neighbour at Dobys Haven, Lekki, Lagos.

She said: “I make bold to say that on November 28, I reported Mr Greg Odutayo to the police for stealing and unlawfully converting a 650 KVA generator, collectively owned by home owners in Dobys Heaven Estate in Lekki, Lagos. In the course of police investigation, the generator was found and being used in Odutayo’s private company, Royal Roots Communications. Instead of cooperating with the police in their investigation, he rushed to the press to concoct stories against me in order to divert attention from the investigation and ultimately pervert the cause of justice

“On the claim by Odutayo and his cohorts that I used the police to harass him over a frivolous petition, I wish to adopt the saying that facts are sacred and cannot be compromised.  As I said in my petition to the police, it was agreed in a general meeting that the generator should be sold, however as the chairman of the estate management committee, I was not aware when it was sold at the ridiculously low price of N2 million.  There was no bidding for and no offers from prospective buyers presented to the joint owners for consideration.

“The joint owners, or the executive committee members issued no receipt or letter of sale and authority to remove the generator to warrant Odutayo claim that he genuinely bought the said generator. Due process was not followed and the illegal sale was carried out secretly in a clandestine manner.”

  • Two kids missing as fire razes buildings

Two kids missing as fire razes buildings

Two children were declared missing yesterday following Tuesday night’s fire which razed Houses 1 and 3 on Odunsi Street in Lawanson, Surulere, Lagos Mainland.

The kids are aged one-and-a half and three-year old. Two others aged two and three years old were injured.

Many of the residents returned from work to meet their homes on fire.

They ran helter-skelter as they sought their neighbours’ help to quench the fire.

The fire, which started few minutes past 8pm, was said to have seen caused by gas explosion. A woman was said to be using a cooking gas when it exploded.

But Delta State-born Chinedu Okolie, who lost all his properties, N276, 000 cash and certificates to the fire, said it was caused by candle light.

Okolie, a Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) National Diploma (ND) I student, said the woman lit a candle, which sparked the fire on contact with fuel allegedly stored in her apartment.

The fire razed 13 rooms on 3 Odunsi Street and eight rooms of House 1.

Damilare Adebayo, son of the late owner of House 1, said he was woken up by thick smoke around 8:30pm. By the time he opened his window to see where it was coming from, fire, he said, had engulfed everywhere.

The businessman said: “It started around 8:30pm; thick smoke was coming from a room in front of my window while sleeping; the smoke was too much. So, I had to check. Immediately I opened my window and peeped through it, I saw that somebody was using a little gas to cook; before we could raise the alarm, the smoke had turned to fire because the gas exploded.”

Adebayo, whose wedding is billed for next  month, said he lost everything he bought for the event.

“I and my fiancée just returned from market on Monday where we shopped for our wedding stuff; everything is gone including some cash, we could not rescue a single pin,” he said.

The residents’ efforts to fight the fire with detergent and water were unsuccessful, he said.

“The fire fighters arrived 30 minutes after the fire started; they came with a complaint that they don’t have enough water, so they used what they had to fight the fire but they were not able to do much,” he said.

Adebayo pleaded with Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to assist the victims.

According to Okolie, his primary and secondary schools certificates, YABATECH admission letter and safety training certificate went with the fire.

“It’s unfortunate I wasn’t at home when it happened, I’m also working with an oil and gas firm in Apapa. I came in this morning and met my room razed. I would have assisted to reduce the damage if I was around due to my training in fire fighting,” he said.

Another resident, Donatus Nwanya, said he could only retrieve some of his clothes, and slippers.

“I don’t live here with my family; I was outside; only came in to take my bath and I saw fire. It started from three rooms before my own and the occupant was not around when the fire started. Government should help us because we have nowhere to go this time around and no place for people to sleep. I lost a lot of property about a million naira plus. Two kids (two years and three years) were injured; they are in the hospital”.

The Nation learnt that the fire fighters were attacked for “coming late” and complaining of “shortage of water.”

According to the Community Development Association (CDA) chairman, Mr Christopher Fadipe, the driver of the fire fighting truck was injured on the right ear.

When pandemonium broke out, the community leaders called the Divisional Police Officer of Itire Police Station who sent some of his men to the scene.

“When the police came, the boys attacked them too; they wounded the driver of the fire fighting vehicle and cut his ear. They also injured some of the policemen; as at last night (Tuesday), the DPO later called me and told me that they were looking for two of his men.

“I went to the station earlier today (yesterday), I saw the DPO because he couldn’t go home yesterday.  He said he had already taken those injured to the hospital,” Fadipe said.

Father of four Moshood Oloto, who lives on 3 Odunsi Street, said two of his children are missing.

He said one-and-half-year-old Taye and three-year-old Aisha got missing after the incident.

Oloto said: “I wasn’t around when it happened, on entering my street around 8:30pm; I learnt that some houses had gone up in flames, not knowing mine was there. On getting home, I saw fire everywhere; I had to take the other building by climbing the fence. I joined them in putting out the fire and started looking for my children.  When I got to my apartment, the fire has not touched it; I struggled to enter but the smoke was thick. To my surprise I couldn’t find any of my children; suddenly the ceiling caught fire, so I had to run for cover. It was when I came out that I saw one of my children (the eldest among them).  I was a bit relieved seeing him, I asked him about the whereabouts of his siblings. He told me he and my second born carried them one each out of the building. I was happy to hear they were out of the building. So I told him to sit while I looked for the others. I could only find two of them since yesterday (Wednesday). My wife’s mother came to take her away this morning because she has been crying about her missing children.  We saw two, the two others are still missing.”

    Yaba residents protest six-month blackout

Fired of living in darkness, residents of Abiodun, Adebiyi, Akanbi, Aderibigbe and Lawani Streets in Onitiri, Yaba, Lagos Mainland, yesterday stormed Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), Marina, Lagos Headquarters to demand better service.

They protested against what they called the “outrageous bills” they have been receiving while living in darkness for six months.

They carried placards with inscriptions, such as, “Eko Distribution PLC is a cheat”; “EKEDC PLC stop distributing darkness”; “We are tired of outrageous bills”; “Prepaid metre is our right” among others.

Led by a lawyer, Mr Ayo Opadokun, they presented a protest letter, which among others stated that the objective of privatising power was to provide reliable and better power supply, to EKEDC management.

The letter, written by their lawyer, Ayo Opadokun & Co., to EKEDC Managing Director, reads: “Our clients have informed us that in the last one year, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company has given different makeup stories for its epileptic supply of power and excessively unfair and unrealistic billing system. There are times when they don’t have any supply for weeks and when it is temporarily restored, the unstable supply has destroyed their electronic gadgets and electrical apparatus. And when one of their cables fell off the pole in the University of Lagos, Yaba, recently, and thereby killed a student, they were in darkness for about a month. That the company claims to be busy making installation of one equipment or the other at all times. But the company as usual will unjustly bill them for power not used.”

Head of Corporate Communication, EKEDC Mr Idemudia Godwin said it was not true that the residents have been in darkness for six months, explaining that the community is experiencing what he called “load-shedding”.

    20 suspected vandals arrested

Twenty persons have been arrested by a combined team of Navy, Army and other security agencies collaborating with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)/ Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC) monitoring team.

According to PPMC, the suspects were intercepted by the patrol team between the Atlas Cove in Lagos and Mosimi depot in Ogun State.

The PPMC said the 20-man syndicate including a woman, was smashed at the Ilado/Ilase Pipeline axis.

The PPMC said: “In line with the directives of President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure zero tolerance against crude oil theft and pipeline vandals, the measures put in place by the Minister of State for Petroleum and the NNPC Group Managing Director Dr Ibe Kachikwu have started achieving positive results.

“These are notorious members of a gang engaging in pipeline vandalism and product theft along the Ilado/Ilase pipeline axis.

“Also confiscated from the suspected vandals are two Hilux trucks, with thousands of jerry cans filled with petroleum products, equipment and several generators.

“The suspected vandals have been taken into custody at the Nigerian Naval Base, Western Command, Apapa and are awaiting further interrogation.”

PPMC Managing Director Mrs Esther Nnamdi–Ogbue, said in the last two weeks, the agency had curbed vandals’ activities along the Atlas Cove and Mosimi axis.

“We hope that those apprehended will soon be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others to desist from these nefarious activities,” she said.

The PPMC recently confirmed that the nation lost about N50 billion in 10 months to pipeline vandalism in some parts of the country.

  • Two women’s bodies found in gutter

Two women’s bodies found in gutter

TWO female bodies were found yesterday in a gutter in Ikorodu, Lagos.

One of the bodies was identified as Kemi, who was said to be a resident of Ikorodu.

It was gathered that two persons have been arrested in connection with the case.

Narrating the incident, a resident, Mrs Bose Bello, said as people gathered to see the bodies, they started pointing fingers to a resident, who  returned from a club that morning.

Mrs Bello said it was through a man who disguised as a mad man that they caught the suspect.

She said: “We noticed a man was acting funny on the street. As one of the officials of Onyabo Vigilante Group held him, he confessed and said he wasn’t the only one in the business and that was what led to Chibueze Samson’s arrest.

“Samson just moved to this area and nobody knows what he does for a living but he spends a lot. Some bar in this area can testify to his movement. Different girls visit him and they leave shouting at each other. He doesn’t even look responsible and also we saw fresh scars on his arm this morning (yesterday) but he is yet to talk.”

It was gathered that six female bodies were also found two weeks ago in the same area.

A resident, Dayo Sofunmi, said five of the bodies were bloated; one was still fresh.

“When we woke up that morning, everywhere was smelling. We didn’t know where it came from. Sadly, we saw the bodies on the empty plot of land beside my house. Between last month and today, we have seen 13 female bodies in this area. It is really unfortunate.”

A trader, Kafayat Adekanmbi, said she did not know if it was those who dumped the bodies that shaved the girls’ pubic hair adding: “When we got there this morning, we saw condom, cigarette and make up in their bags. We are not secured here. If we plead with the government to deploy police officers to our streets, they may arrest wrong people and we don’t want that. If they don’t see young girls to use anymore, our children may be next. We don’t know what they do with them. If I am not mistaken, we have seen 13 girls in this place. It is scary and unfair.”

The bodies have been taken to Igbogbo General Hospital mortuary.
