Lawyer remanded for alleged cyberbullying Federal lawmaker

A 43-year-old lawyer, aigwe Nwalo Johnson has been remanded in a correctional facility over allegations of cyberbullying and defamation against Mr Chinedu Ogah, the lawmaker representing Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency.

Magistrate Sandra Onyibe gave the order yesterday in a suit with case number MAB/616C/2025 filed by the Police.

The Police alleged that Johnson, along with other persons conspired in October, this year to commit criminal acts through cyberbullying.

The prosecution, led by Eze Chinagorom Ndubuisi in charge of the Directorate of Legal Services, Police  Headquarters, Abakaliki, accused Johnson of conspiring to commit cyberbullying, an offence under Section 516A(a) of the Criminal Code, Cap 33 Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State, 2009.

He further alleged that Johnson transmitted a live Facebook broadcast via the account of Amarachi Nweke, which purportedly placed Mr Ogah in fear of death, violence, and bodily harm, contrary to Section 24(2)(a) of the Cyber Crimes (Prohibition and Prevention) Act 2015, as amended.

The prosecution also accused Johnson of broadcasting content intended to damage Ogah’s reputation by falsely accusing him of a crime, in violation of Section 24(2)(c) of the same Act.

During proceedings, Johnson’s counsel, Kelvin Nwafor, requested that the case be transferred to the Federal High Court, arguing that the magistrate court lacked jurisdiction.

He prayed the court to grant his client bail.

Presiding Magistrate Sandra Oyibe, however, rejected the bail applications.

The Magistrate emphasised the constitutional protections governing remand proceedings, noting that while bail could be considered, the ongoing remand must continue.

She adjourned the case to December 22, 2025 for further hearing, directing that the case be transferred to the Department of Public Prosecution for advice.

  • Ex-AMCON MD diverted N4.9billion Arik funds, staff to float NG Eagle, witness tells court

Ex-AMCON MD diverted N4.9billion Arik funds, staff to float NG Eagle, witness tells court

A Lagos State Special Offences Court yesterday heard how a former Managing Director of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), Ahmed Kuru, allegedly diverted N4.9 billion belonging to the defunct Arik Air Limited to establish a new airline, NG Eagle Airlines.

Testifying before Justice Mojisola Dada, an investigative officer with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Bawa Kaltungo, said the diversion was uncovered during the Commission’s probe of the defendants.

Kuru is standing trial alongside Kamilu Alaba Omokide, Captain Roy Ilegbodu, Union Bank Plc, and Super Bravo Limited.

Led in evidence by the lead prosecution counsel, Dr. Wahab Shittu (SAN), Kaltungo said a statement provided by Arik’s former Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Jonathan Sani, provided the details of how N4.5 billion was moved from Arik to fund NG Eagle, an airline allegedly owned and controlled by the defendants.

The EFCC investigator explained that Kuru, Omokide, and Ilegbodu allegedly conspired to move a total of N4.9 billion out of Arik’s assets to float the new airline, while also transferring Arik employees to NG Eagle.

According to him, NG Eagle was incorporated while Kuru was still the MD of AMCON, and Omokide served as Receiver Manager over Arik, creating a conflict that facilitated the alleged diversion.

Kaltungo told the court that Arik Air continued to bear the burden of salaries and operational expenses for NG Eagle’s workers during its formative stage.

During proceedings yesterday, the court admitted several documents, including a certified ex parte order, marked P17.

Other admitted materials – labelled P18, P25, P26, P44, and P45 – included photographs and a flash drive containing a video of vandalised aircraft, which was played in open court.

“This investigation report is based strictly on documentary evidence recovered during the course of our work,” Kaltungo told the court.

Counsel to the second and third defendants applied for the release of their clients’ passports for renewal and medical travel.

Justice Dada granted the request but ordered that the passports be returned to the court registry on or before January 2, next year.

The court adjourned the matter to the earlier scheduled dates as well as March 2 and 3, next year, for continuation of trial.

Aide kicks as EFCC seals Sylva’s Abuja home

THE Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs to Chief Timipre Sylva, Chief Julius Bokoru, has condemned the sealing of his principal’s Maitama home in Abuja by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Bokoru, in a statement titled, “A grave breach of decency: EFCC’s attempted raid and defacement of Sylva’s family home”, said the action was undertaken “without a letter, a subpoena, a warrant, notification, and even the most basic adherence to lawful process”.

He said: “No courtesy. No procedure. No humanity. It is behaviour unbecoming of any institution that claims to act in the national interest. What unfolded today at the Maitama residence of Chief Timipre Sylva, was nothing short of an affront to decency and a troubling assault on the very principles that underpin a civilised society.

“Officers of the EFCC attempted yet another aggressive intrusion into his home and proceeded to spray-paint his walls in stark red, emblazoning the words “EFCC — Keep Off” as though marking the property of a fugitive rather than the home of a respected statesman”.

Bokoru added: “What deepens the wound is that this is not merely a property; it is the home in which Chief Sylva’s children, relatives, and staff have been effectively encircled for weeks.

“It is the last space available to them, especially now that it appears they are not permitted to leave the country freely. To violate such a place,.without warning, without justification,.is to inflict terror upon innocent people who have no connection whatsoever to political gamesmanship.

“Where, one must ask, are his children expected to go? How long must they endure this atmosphere of fear and uncertainty?”

Bokoru lamented that the action, which he described as arbitrary and vindictive, was a violation of democratic principles and  its values, insisting that it was not how an institution established to uphold justice should behave.

But he said: “We remain firmly convinced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not involved in these excesses. Throughout his long and distinguished public life, the President has shown respect for due process, fairness, and institutional integrity.

“This latest incident bears all the hallmarks of local political rivalry being misinterpreted, or mischievously presented, as federal instruction. It is a dangerous muddling of partisan ambition with national authority.

“Government agencies and parastatals must never allow themselves to become weapons in political contests. To do so weakens not only the institutions themselves but the very fabric of our democracy.

“Chief Sylva has, for decades, served Nigeria with calmness, loyalty, and an almost disarming sense of patriotism. From his stewardship of Bayelsa State to his contributions at the federal level and his continued, unwavering support for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, he has remained dignified even when confronted with provocation. His commitment to this nation has never faltered”.

He further reminded the public that Sylva’s  aides and domestic servants such as Paganengigha Anagha, Friday Lusa Paul, Musa Mohammed, and Police Officer Reuben Ayuba were still in detention, saying they were being held for weeks on vague, insubstantial, and nearly non-existent allegations.

Bokoru said: “These are ordinary men, with families and hopes of their own, now caught in a political dragnet that has stripped them of clarity, certainty, and liberty.

“Their prolonged detention is unjust. Their suffering is needless. And their situation is emblematic of the wider injustice unfolding before the nation.

“Yet, in spite of the pain and the deep emotional strain of this moment, we remain hopeful. Nigeria has weathered storms before, storms of uncertainty, of injustice, of heavy-handedness, and emerged stronger. We believe justice will rise above intimidation, that truth will outlast malice, and that, as with all trials faced with dignity and faith, this too shall pass.

APC chieftain decries deplorable state of Ibadan/Gbongan federal road

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun state, Hon Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has expressed concern over the deplorable condition of the Ibadan‑Gbongan road, describing it as a ‘death trap.’

Oyintiloye, a former lawmaker of the Osun State House of Assembly and a member of the defunct Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), in a statement, said the road linking Oyo, Osun, and Ondo states has become a threat to road users.

He warned that continued neglect of the road would lead to a higher risk, especially during this festive period when more commuters are expected to use the road.

Oyintiloye, a former lawmaker, appealed to the federal government to urgently find a solution to the road before its total collapse.

He said the road was now in such a terrible condition that motorists had to abandon one lane of the dual carriageway.

The APC chieftain noted that many deep potholes on the road, which serves as a vital route linking Southwest states with the other regions of the country, have made it almost impassable.

“I want to appeal to the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently find a solution and fix this road. Every part of the road is almost impassible, and this is causing untold hardship for motorists traveling on it.

“In this festive season, traffic volume on the road will increase, and without emergency repairs, motorists might face more hardship and insecurity”, he said.

Oyintiloye, while commending the federal government on its Renewed Hope infrastructure development across the country, said urgent intervention is needed on the roads for the safety and well‑being of Nigerians using them.

“Due to the terrible condition of the road, the dual‑carriageway has been converted to a single lane. This is not good for the safety of road users, especially at this time of year. A good road network will help the nation to sustain its current economic growth, create jobs, improve economic activities, and enrich the quality of life of the people”, he said.

Oyintiloye said that the deteriorating condition of many roads across the country had become a significant strain on the economy.

He said the situation was leading to a loss of billions of naira annually in lost productivity and resources.

“Beyond economic setbacks, the poor state of the road network has claimed countless lives in preventable accidents and exposed travellers to danger of insecurity”, he said.

Oyintiloye said that despite substantial yearly budgets dedicated to road construction and maintenance, the country continues to face a persistent gap in the quality and quantity of its road infrastructure.

He, however, urged the federal government to fast-track the rehabilitation and reconstruction of all the roads that need urgent attention as the festive period approaches.

  • LASWA, NIWA strengthen joint safety measures on Lagos waterways for festive season

LASWA, NIWA strengthen joint safety measures on Lagos waterways for festive season

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) have strengthened joint safety and security measures across Lagos waterways in December as passenger traffic rose ahead of the festive season.

The agencies said the coordinated effort is aimed at ensuring safer movement of passengers, protecting lives, and improving operational discipline across key water transport corridors in the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on the Blue Economy said the collaboration has expanded enforcement capacity and improved coordination with security agencies, vessel operators, and waterfront communities during the high travel period.

He said safety on the waterways remained non-negotiable, adding that the joint operation is designed to guarantee a secure festive experience for all users of Lagos water transport routes.

As part of the renewed enforcement drive, coordinated patrols have been carried out by officials of LASWA, NIWA, the Marine Police, and community safety volunteers along major waterways and terminals, particularly during peak travel hours and at night.

As part of the coordinated safety operations, commercial passenger vessels would be subjected to joint safety inspections before and during the holidays, while random spot checks would be conducted to ensure compliance with operational licensing requirements and safety equipment standards.

The agencies would also strengthen real-time monitoring of weather and water conditions on key routes and issue safety advisories to operators and commuters when necessary, including route adjustments where conditions pose risks to navigation.

A strict zero alcohol boarding policy would be enforced, with passengers and crew members who show signs of intoxication denied boarding in a bid to prevent accidents and protect lives on the waterways.

Passengers have been advised to wear life jackets properly, obey safety instructions from crew and enforcement officers, avoid boarding overloaded vessels, and maintain close supervision of children during water travel.

Boat operators have also been directed to ensure they operate with valid licenses, complete passenger manifests, and functional safety equipment. They are also required to clearly display emergency contact information at terminals and onboard vessels and to maintain properly trained crew members while observing approved capacity limits.

21 kidnapped victims rescued from Enugu, Kaduna forests

Troops of Sector 1, Joint Task Force Southeast, Operation UDO KA (OPUK) have rescued 14 kidnap victims from Orokam forest in Enugu State after fierce gunbattle with the criminals.

Orakam forest is located between Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu and Ogbadigbo in Benue State.

The rescue of the victims, according to the spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, Col. Appolonia Anele, followed actionable intelligence from vigilant community sources.

“Acting swiftly, troops working in concert with local vigilantes mounted an assault on a suspected kidnap hideout concealed deep in the forest. On contact, the criminals unleashed gunfire, prompting a fierce engagement.

“The joint force’s superior firepower, tactical manoeuvre and relentless advance forced the kidnappers to break contact and flee, abandoning the abductees,” she said.

Anele said the victims were kidnapped over the weekend while returning from a burial, adding that they were being held in dispersed clusters across the forest. “Intelligence further indicated that the victims were abducted from two separate communities: Ezimo Agu in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State and Orokam in Ogbadigbo Local Government Area of Benue State.

“All rescued persons have been formally handed over to the Divisional Police Officer, Udenu Division, for proper profiling and subsequent reunification with their families.

“Nigerian Army troops continue to maintain aggressive battlespace dominance across the theatre of operations general area, reaffirming the Nigerian Army’s resolve to neutralise all threats and uphold peace and security throughout the Southeast,” she added.

Also, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has crushed a notorious kidnapping operation following the dislodgement of a criminal camp and the rescue of seven abducted victims in a high-risk, cross-border security raid.

The dramatic operation was triggered by a distress call received by the Police on December 5, this year, reporting that armed kidnappers had invaded a community in Ushafa, Abuja, and whisked away several residents under the cover of darkness.

Following the development, a joint security task force made up of operatives from the FCT Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Nigerian Army and Department of State Services (DSS) swung into action the following day, launching a coordinated manhunt for the abductors.

Guided by credible intelligence, the security team traced the suspects’ movements through the outskirts of Mpape community and onward into settlements linking Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

In a statement yesterday, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Josephine Adeh said: “Demonstrating remarkable gallantry, the joint security team continued the pursuit for over seven hours across difficult mountainous terrain. Their efforts led them to the suspects’ camp in Kweri Forest, Kaduna State, where another exchange of gunfire ensued. The sustained pressure forced the kidnappers to flee, prompting the operatives to rescue an additional six victims. All rescued victims were taken to the hospital, where they are receiving medical attention and are in stable condition.”

Adeh said the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Miller Dantawaye, commended the bravery and professionalism of the operatives.

  • NSCDC confirms killing of two farmers, burning of village in Jigawa

NSCDC confirms killing of two farmers, burning of village in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed that two farmers were killed and Yelwan Musari village in Guri Local Government Area was set ablaze following a violent attack by suspected Fulani herders.

The Public Relations Officer of the Corps, SP Badaruddeen, told our reporter that the clash erupted after herders allegedly encroached on farmlands, destroying crops.

He explained that when villagers went to inspect the damaged farmland on Sunday morning, they were ambushed by herders hiding in the area.

“The herders suddenly opened fire with bows and arrows, killing one Magaji Dan’aya on the spot and injuring his younger brother,” Badaruddeen said.

The NSCDC spokesperson added that the farmers regrouped and attempted to confront the attackers, which triggered a second round of violence.

READ ALSO; By 2026, countries will be borrowing from Nigeria— First Lady declares

“The herders also reinforced, moved their cattle several kilometres away and launched another attack. They killed another farmer and forced the villagers to retreat,” he said.

SP Badaruddeen added that the fleeing farmers abandoned one of the corpses in the bush, while the herders pursued them back to the community, surrounded the settlement and set it ablaze.

He noted that although a team from Operation Salama, comprising police and military personnel, arrived the scene, the second corpse remained in the bush until NSCDC operatives later recovered it amid fears that the attackers were still hiding nearby.

“As I speak, the body is in the house of the village head awaiting burial. Our personnel are on ground monitoring the situation. Many villagers have already fled in fear of a fresh attack,” he said, adding that the Guri LGA Chairman and security agencies were in a meeting with both sides.

    Residents Recount Night of Horror

Eyewitnesses told Our reporter that the attack, which started late Saturday and continued into Sunday morning, escalated months of tension between farmers and herders in the area.

A resident, Murtala Imamu, said the community had remained on edge after herders reportedly boycotted local markets.

He confirmed that armed herders stormed the village, setting houses and rice-milling centres ablaze.

Imamu linked the renewed hostility to last year’s killing of a farmer, Ya’u Namara, allegedly by herders.

Another resident, Ado Musa, corroborated the account, adding that the attackers blocked the Guri–Hadejia highway, preventing injured villagers from accessing medical care in Hadejia.

“Police and soldiers arrived late. They could not stop the escalation because both sides had been clashing since afternoon,” he said.

It was unclear at press time whether the herders suffered casualties. Calls to Adamu Ori, a leader among the herders, went unanswered.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Lawan Shi’isu Adam, said he was unaware of the incident.

“I’m currently in Abuja on official assignment. I will find out,” he told Online Tribune.

    Fresh Violence After Earlier Clash

Saturday’s attack occurred barely days after another confrontation in Zarga village, Taura LGA, where 12 farmers sustained injuries.

Guri and other communities in Jigawa North-East Senatorial District sit atop vast farmlands and grazing routes — a geography that has historically triggered clashes between farmers and herders.

Seasonal migration of unfamiliar herder groups has reportedly deepened hostilities, often leading to casualties and destruction of property.

Across Jigawa, the farmer–herder conflict remains entrenched in ecological pressures, dwindling resources and long-standing grievances between both communities.

Foundation plans summit to strengthen Nigeria–Ghana relations

Ghana will in January host a major continental leadership forum designed to reinforce political and economic relations with Nigeria, it has been learnt.

The Regal Influence Summit is being organised by the KRIF Foundation — a non-profit dedicated to advancing ethical leadership, governance and transformational development across Africa.

Managing Director, KRIF Foundation, Mrs. Awura Adjoa Okosun, said the Summit will serve as a platform for Nigeria and Ghana to align influence for measurable continental impact.

“The Regal Influence Summit will bring together leaders who shape policy and development across Africa.

“Nigeria’s role in West Africa is significant, and deepening collaboration between both nations will support regional transformation,” she noted.

Held under the theme “Commanding Influence, Shaping Nations,” the 2026 Summit is expected to feature Nigerian and Ghanaian Presidents and former Presidents, First Ladies, business magnates, investors, diplomats, and royal institutions.

Discussions will focus on policies that unlock trade, investment flow, youth empowerment, democratic institutions and cross-border business growth.

The Foundation emphasises that with Africa projected to host the world’s largest workforce by 2040, Ghana and Nigeria must leverage their influence to mobilise sustainable development solutions.

According to the Foundation, key activities lined up for the Summit include: Presidential and First Ladies’ dialogue, investment and policy roundtables, royal panel of eminent chiefs and queen mothers, leadership masterclasses and keynote sessions, networking for Public–Private Partnerships and gala night and legacy awards.

The organisers added that several social-impact programmes will also be unveiled to deepen cooperation across both countries, including a Regal Mentorship Programme, Widow’s Empowerment Fund, scholarship initiatives, a Braille inclusion project, and an interfaith dialogue platform.

It said the expected outcomes include a leadership communiqué with action-oriented solutions, expanded cross-border partnerships and a strengthened Ghana–Nigeria influence bloc.

Originally scheduled for November 2025, the Summit was rescheduled to honour the memory of the late former First Lady of Ghana, H.E. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings. The event will take place at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, Accra.

Beyond the date shift, organisers say the 2026 edition is strategically positioned to advance stronger ties between West Africa’s two most influential nations — Ghana and Nigeria.

The Summit will gather leaders of government, industry, diplomacy, investment, religion, and traditional institutions from across the continent to drive bilateral cooperation and shared development.
