‘No alternative to peaceful conduct of Edo, Ondo polls’

    Bisi Olaniyi, Benin

THE Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC’s) National Commissioner, Festus Okoye, has said there is no alternative to the peaceful conduct of Edo and Ondo governorship elections.

Okoye, who is also the chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee of INEC, said the alternative to the peaceful conduct of Edo and Ondo polls would leave the residents with a constitutional logjam that might be difficult to resolve.

He spoke in Benin, Edo State, in a keynote address before opening INEC’s media sensitisation workshop, ahead of the September 19 governorship election.

Okoye said: “Parties must eschew violence. Political parties and their candidates must eschew the use of intemperate, inflammatory and base language designed to inflame passions or incite violence.

“On our (INEC’s) part, we are determined and resolved to proceed with the conduct of the Edo and Ondo governorship elections and outstanding by-elections. In doing so, the commission will not compromise the safety and welfare of its workers, ad-hoc officials and voters. We will work with security agencies to stop threats and degrade acts of violence.”

    Bisi Olaniyi, Benin

THE Commissioner of Police (CP) in Edo, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, says the deployment of mobile policemen in Okpella, Etsako East Local Government, is to contain violence.

The CP made the clarification in a phone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin.

He said: “The deployment is for security.”

Since the deployment of the mobile policemen, the All Progressives Congress APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been trading words on the development.

While the APC has raised the alarm over the stationing of the policemen in a state government official’s home, the PDP has dismissed it, saying it was a normal routine police exercise.

Ekata said: “On June 22, I was forced by Obaseki to join the PDP, but I have not been able to sleep very well since then, because my conscience is worrying me. I am comfortable with the APC; this is where I will remain.

“My followers and I are ready to support Pastor Ize-Iyamu because he is the best governorship candidate in Edo State.”

He described Ize-Iyamu as a grassroots politician, who was more popular and more experienced than Obaseki, noting that he would ensure good governance from November 12.

Obaseki, APC in showdown over refinery

    Bisi Olaniyi, Benin

GOVERNOR Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Media Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are engaged in a showdown over modular refinery in Edo State.

The campaign council, through its Chairman, Prince John Mayaki, yesterday at a news conference in Benin, said the refinery was privately owned and not Obaseki’s project.

The governor, reacting through his Special Adviser on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, however, accused APC members of having sleepless nights over his achievements.

The campaign council said Obaseki attempted to steal credit for the building of the privately-owned refinery at Ologbo near Benin in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government, because his administration lacked any achievement to show for its four-year term.

It condemned the governor’s “irresponsible and mischievous” latching onto the project to enjoy undeserved plaudits, while challenging him to publicise the contribution of his government to the success of the project.

The campaign council noted that the refinery was a Federal Government-backed privately-funded project, undertaken by the AIPCC Energy Ltd, in a joint venture between AFCOM and Peiyang Chemical Equipment Company of China.

It accused the governor of frustrating the development of the refinery project with his disastrous economic policies and disregard for the rule of law, which it noted had driven investors from the state.

    Democracy being undermined, says Secondus

    By Gbade Ogunwale, Abuja

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, has accused the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof Ibrahim Gambari and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Adams Oshiomhole of undermining democracy through their actions.

Secondus spoke against the backdrop of the viral video where Gambari and Oshiomhole were discussing the rising incidence of violence in the run up to the September 19 Edo State governorship election.

At a media briefing in Abuja on Thursday, the PDP chairman said with the action of the duo, the threat to the nation’s democracy was becoming more and more real by the day.

Secondus said: “The PDP has watched with utmost concern the developing situation in Edo State. We have watched the growing desperation of the APC, and the Presidency to capture Edo State in the September 19 governorship election at all cost.

“We are deeply saddened that under the watch of an elected President, Muhammadu Buhari, who is a huge beneficiary of democracy, the nation’s highest seat of power is being used for the hatching of plans to undermine democracy.”

APC demands investigation into Obaseki’s alleged arms importation

    By Bisi Olaniyi, Benin

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Media Campaign Council for Edo State governorship election on Thursday demanded investigation into Governor Godwin Obaseki’s alleged arms importation, thugs’ escort and massive shootings during his re-election campaigns.

It slammed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate for the shocking shootings at Obaseki’s rally in Igueben, saying the incident affirmed its previous allegation of Obaseki’s importation of guns and inclusion of buses full of armed thugs in his convoy.

PDP spokesman Chris Nehikhare, however, denied the allegation levelled by the APC media campaign council against Governor Obaseki, saying it was false.

The APC Media Campaign Council through its Chairman, Prince John Mayaki, condemned the resort to violence by Obaseki, his allies and thugs.

It said: “According to multiple reports confirmed by residents in Igueben and hospital’s records, chaos broke out on August 19 at Igueben, near the home of a PDP chieftain, Chief Tom Ikimi (an indigene of Igueben), when armed thugs escorting Governor Obaseki on a campaign turned on one another in a wild shooting that sent at least one person to hospital, with a leg damaged by bullets.

“While confirming the shooting that left people scampering for safety, eyewitnesses said the thugs, sourced from neighbouring states and handed deadly firearms, secretly purchased by Edo governor, had maintained a fractious relationship, as some of them reportedly belong to rival cults.”

  • Ize-Iyamu to police: unmask suspects behind campaign violence

Ize-Iyamu to police: unmask suspects behind campaign violence

    By Yusuf Alli, Abuja

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, on Thursday asked security agencies and the Nigeria Police Force to unmask the identities of the suspects arrested in connection with campaign violence.

He said he would not perpetrate violence to win the governorship election because he was not desperate for the office.

Ize-Iyamu alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is trying to raise false alarm to scare voters from coming out on September 19, in order to write results.

He said the APC would win in the 18 local governments.

Ize-Iyamu, who spoke at an interactive session with the media in Abuja, said he was worried that PDP had been perpetrating violence but the suspects had not been unmasked.

He said: “There are worries. I have had cause to complain about the destruction of my billboards. I reported to the police and the Department of State Security Service, but nothing happened.

“What I find more worrisome is the violence the PDP and its supporters perpetrated and put the blame on the doorsteps of the APC.

“I appeal to security agencies to arrest those involved in this violence. Let the security agencies disclose the names of suspects that have been arrested, including some of those who have been taken to Abuja.

“If Governor Godwin Obaseki enjoys immunity, his supporters do not enjoy immunity. The security agencies should release the list of those that have been arrested for violence.

“What they (PDP and supporters) are trying to do is to raise the alarm so that our people won’t come out en masse to vote in order to go and write results. Our people should not be frightened; they should come out to vote.

“We will win in the 18 local governments. On what basis are we going to resort to violence?

“Our campaign has been issue-based. We have a SIMPLE agenda, which we are selling to the people of Edo State. We will not engage in violence.”

Asked what will be his attitude if he wins or loses the poll, Ize-Iyamu said he will not engage in violence.

He added: “For me, a man who really wants to serve cannot be desperate to get into office. I am not desperate to be a governor, it is not compulsory to be a governor. My main purpose to be in government is to serve the people of Edo State to the best of my ability.

“I want to assure you that if I lose the election, the worst that will happen is to go to court. I will not resort to violence.”

On the tenure of Obaseki, the APC candidate rated his performance low.

He said: “There is no way we cannot talk about the stewardship of the incumbent governor because we want to replace him. We must talk about the performance of the governor even if he is not contesting.

“I believe that he has not done well compared to the resources available to him in the last four years and compared to his promises, which were not written.

“Obaseki said he would establish primary health care centres in the 192 wards in the state, but at the end of four years, he has not been able to build up to 22.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has done his best to strengthen security nationwide, but Edo State Government is not complementing him. Instead, the state government is giving excuse that security is in the hands of the Federal Government. We are now experiencing high level of insecurity. In the absence of support for the police and other security agencies by the Edo State Government, there can be no security.

“We don’t want Edo State that is backward, we want Edo State that can compete among the best.”

372,888 PVCs not collected in Ondo, says REC

    From Osagie Otabor, Akure

Of the 1,822, 346 registered electorate in Ondo State, only 1,478,460 voters are expected to participate in the October 10 governorship election.

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Dr. Rufus Akeju, speaking yesterday in Akure, said the owners of the PVCs refused to collect them despite appeals and awareness for them to collect the cards.

He said only those with PVCs would be allowed to vote.

Akeju said COVID-19 protocols would be followed during the election.

APC petitions IGP, CP as policemen besiege community

    From Bisi Olaniyi, Benin

Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC) has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Muhammed Adamu and Police Commissioner (CP) Babatunde Kokumo over the invasion by 50 policemen of Okpella in Etsako East Local Government.

The invasion was allegedly done on the orders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

APC alleged that the policemen were harboured at the home of a politician.

The party, yesterday in Benin, through the Chairman of its Media Campaign Council, Prince John Mayaki, noted that the development had caused apprehension at Okpella, with residents expressing worry about the planned intimidation, ahead of the September 19 governorship election.

It said: “Residents of adjoining communities have lamented the police officers’ night movements, characterised by indiscriminate shootings, shouts of obscenities and other bizarre acts of intimidation, which they claimed are aimed at causing fear ahead of the election.

“It is important to note that Okpella has recorded defection of supporters from the PDP to the APC in the past few weeks, as residents declare their intention to back Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the governorship candidate of the APC, because of the failure of the Governor Godwin Obaseki administration to fulfil its promises.

“Prominent among former members of the PDP, who are supporting Pastor Ize-Iyamu, is Prince Kassim Afegbua, a chieftain of the PDP and a popular political figure at Okpella.

“The dispatch of the police officers to Okpella has been interpreted as a desperate tactic by the government to scare voters.”

APC said its petitions to the IGP and CP would enable them probe the dispatch of the policemen to Okpella.

The party said: “It amounts to violation of the objective stance expected of security agencies, including officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), to embark on a secret mission to an area where the incumbent governor is not popular.

“We doubt that the police commissioner approved the disturbing operation of policemen at Okpella, which bodes ill for the peaceful conduct of the election in the community.”

Governor Obaseki’s Special Adviser on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, was contacted on the phone, but he did not react at press time.

  • Ibrahim: more defectors for APC

    Ibrahim: more defectors for APC

    From Osagie Otabor, Akure

Business mogul Jimoh Ibrahim has told the All Progressives Congress (APC) to open its doors to receive more defectors.

He said Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu had steered the ship of the state from financial strangulation.

Speaking yesterday at his country home in Igbotako, Okitipupa Local Government, when he received the State Working Committee of the APC led by the Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, Ibrahim said the people were happy with the giant strides of the APC government.

He said he would soon respond to request by Adetimehin that he (Ibrahim) should join the APC.

Ibrahim said the secret of the success of Akeredolu was that the governor had more of strength and less of weakness.

Said he: “While I promise to sleep over your request, let me advise you to open your doors for thousands of defectors that are set to join the APC. They are joining from the Peoples Democratic Party and other parties.

“I will be supportive of the re-election bid of Akeredolu. The governor will win the governorship election with a wide margin.

“I wonder how the governor was able to move the state forward in less than four years, despite the huge debts he inherited from the previous administration.

“I thank him, on behalf of the state, for not putting Ondo in a financial mess. Again, I am not surprised; here is a man who led the Nigerian Bar Association without a blemish.”

Adetimehin urged Ibrahim to join the APC “so that we can join forces to win and retain Ondo State for more developmental projects.”
