The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has said the era when monarchs were seen and treated as ceremonial community leaders was over.

He said if elected, his administration would from November 12 have plans for greater roles for traditional rulers’ involvement in governance.

He presented the royal fathers with his SIMPLE agenda manifesto, which he called “my covenant with Edo People”, pledging his commitment to the development of the state.

The governorship candidate said: “In this document (the SIMPLE agenda), we also recognise the pre-eminence of traditional rulers. It is not enough to give them ceremonial attention. Monarchs must be part of the running of government. Another key area is security.

“I am able to show this document to your highnesses, because the Bible says where there is no vision, the people perish. In the last four years in Edo, we have had a government without a clear-cut agenda.”

The Otaru of Igarra, Oba Emmanuel Adeche, Saiki II, urged the people to embrace peace, in order to ensure progress, development and security.

He said the era of political thuggery, bitterness and violence was over.

The monarch sought a peaceful, free, fair and credible election.

“It has become imperative for IGP Adamu to declare his position as a non-partisan boss.

“Since the beginning of electioneering ahead of the governorship poll in Edo State, there has been tension in the state.

“There have been allegations of using federal might against the people.

“I urge IGP Adamu and other security chiefs to caution their men that will be drafted to the state.”

Nehikhare said gathering people in one place would expose them to infection from COVID-19, which was a threat.

He said despite the ward to ward approach adopted for the campaign, it had been successful.

The publicity secretary said PDP and its candidate, Governor Godwin Obaseki, were received with enthusiasm in the wards so far visited.

He said the campaign council began its campaigns in Edo North Senatorial District, which had 64 wards out of the 192 wards in the state.

“We have as at today, completed our ward to ward campaign in 64 wards. Although at some point, we had to suspend campaign due to the House of Assembly issue.

“But we have returned to complete campaign in the four wards, which were affected then.”

The General Overseer of Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), Prophet T. B. Joshua, has denied giving any prophecy on the September 19 governorship election.

The cleric, who spoke in Lagos on Wednesday, said any such story was “entirely false, a prophecy rumour and propagated by Satan…the father of lies.”

    Thousands throng Ize-Iyamu’s campaign venues

    By Bisi Olaniyi, Benin

Thousands of residents are thronging the venues of the campaigns of the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

The electioneering got off to a bright start on Monday in Esan land, Edo Central Senatorial District, with supporters of Ize-Iyamu showing solidarity, in view of the efforts by local organising officials of the APC to maintain compliance with health regulatory guidelines.

It was a sea of heads at Igueben, Ubiaja and Uromi, the administrative headquarters of Igueben, Esan Southeast, and Esan Northeast local governments where the governorship candidate sold his SIMPLE agenda manifesto, highlighting plans to attract investments and development to Edo Central Senatorial District.

At Igueben, after receiving royal blessings from the traditional rulers of Edo Central, who gathered at the palace of the Onojie of the Igueben Kingdom, HRH Ehizojie Eiluojerio I, Ize-Iyamu shared copies of his SIMPLE agenda manifesto with them, noting his plans to partner traditional institutions to tackle insecurity and policy misalignment between the government and the people. He said he would promote beneficial cultural values and tradition.

Ize-Iyamu exposed the fallacy of Governor Godwin Obaseki’s Esan agenda promise, describing it as a contrived falsehood to earn pity votes.

He said the Edo governor had overlooked the people of Esan land on numerous occasions and failed to develop the area in his four years in office.

The APC standard-bearer accused Obaseki of using the handover promise as a gimmick to obtain votes in areas he is not popular, having made a similar promise to his deputy, Philip Shaibu, who hails from Edo North Senatorial District.

He assured the people of his readiness to protect and secure their farmlands, invest in tools that will aid productivity and market their produce to foreign buyers.

At Ubiaja, the governorship candidate promised the people of Esan Southeast Local Government that he would continue the development programmes  of former governor Adams Oshiomhole in the areas of road construction, schools, health centres and others, which he said were abandoned by Obaseki over petty politics and disregard for people’s needs.

When the campaign train stopped in Uromi, Ize-Iyamu inaugurated a borehole donated by a community leader in Ward 8, Efandion, Prof. Steve Iyayi.

He hailed him for his generosity and display of leadership, lamenting the neglect of the community.

Ize-Iyamu promised to tackle the recurrent challenge of erosion and lack of basic amenities, before proceeding to the rally venue, where thousands of supporters had gathered.

They cheered him, while spelling out his policies, plans and programmes, as documented in his manifesto.

Ize-Iyamu urged the people to obtain a copy of the manifesto and hold him accountable to the promises.

Accompanying the APC governorship candidate were his running mate, Gani Audu, a former national chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and other chieftains.

He said: “I was shocked to discover that my name was among PDP chieftains listed to be assassinated by the killer squad in Edo State. Governor Obaseki’s approach to governance and his achievements across the state have caused nightmare for the opposition.

“Do they want to kill me because of the rice I always share to the needy in Edo State? Is it because of the scholarship I am giving to the poor? Is it in view of the hospital bills of indigent patients that I regularly pay?

“The September 19 governorship election in Edo State is a foregone issue, because the people have made up their minds to return Obaseki for a second term.”
