DIG warns thugs against disrupting election

    From Bisi Olaniyi, Benin

Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Adeleye Oyebade has warned thugs against disrupting Saturday’s election in Edo State.

Oyebade, who is in charge of the poll, said there would be security of lives and property in the 192 wards across the 18 local governments before, during and after the election.

He noted that besides dehumanising the people and making Nigeria a laughing stock among the comity of nations, violence during elections could also breed fatalities and abruptly cause injuries to the psyche and physical bodies of the victims.

The DIG, who yesterday briefed reporters at the headquarters of Edo Police Command in Benin on the level of preparedness for the poll, assured the residents that the election would be free, fair, safe and credible.

He said: “We want to sound a note of warning to would-be miscreants and other political thugs, who might want to be holding clandestine, diurnal or nocturnal meetings to foment trouble with the motive to disrupt the election and scuttle the democratic process, to desist from such act, as the arm of the law will catch up with them.

“Elections in Nigeria have often been marred by plethora of election malpractices and violence. Violence during elections can exceedingly debase the very essence and foundation of our jealously-guarded renascent democracy. Election marred by violence and other forms of malpractices cannot be said to be free and fair.

“Let me assure the good people of Edo State that the officers deployed for this special assignment will be apolitical, neutral and professional in their constitutional responsibilities. The police officers and their counterparts from sister agencies, who are involved in the election, will be posted to polling booths by name and they will wear tags for easy identification.”

Oyebade said the workers (permanent and ad hoc) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), electoral materials, the electorate, party agents, local and international observers, governorship candidates, reporters and other stakeholders would be protected before, during and after the election.

He noted that the objective of the security collaboration was to provide an enabling environment for a free and fair election that would remain a reference point in election security.

He said previous elections in Nigeria might have had their challenges, adding that it was the resolve of security agencies to improve on the poll and make Edo governorship election freer, better, more inclusive, safer and more credible.

Labour unions in Edo State, including Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) have reaffirmed support for the second term bid of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

They promised to vote for the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by mobilising their members across the state.

The workers, who spoke to reporters at a rally in Benin City, hailed the governor’s developmental strides across the state, noting that Obaseki’s sterling performance would earn him victory at the polls on Saturday.

Edo NLC Chairman Emmanuel Ademokun hailed Obaseki for prioritising the welfare and well-being of workers, especially the prompt payment of salary and pension.

He said: “We did not come here to campaign today but to let everybody know that the governor doesn’t joke with payment of pension and salary. What do we want again? You don’t change a working governor, but rather you re-elect him.

“The Nigeria Labour Congress under my watch never had issues with the governor; those with him are more than those that are against him.”

TUC Chairman Marshal Orhue noted: “For four years in Edo State, workers have been promptly paid their salaries. There have been no strike actions. What else could we have asked of this man? On behalf of the TUC, I reassure the governor that we are strongly behind him.”

The Chairman of NULGE, Mr. Lazarus Adorolo, commended Governor Obaseki for redefining governance in Edo and repositioning the state on the path of progress.

“Before now, local government revenue was nothing to write home about, but today we can collect our revenue without any issue,” he added.

Tambuwal: Edo, Ondo polls will define Buhari’s electoral legacy

    Gbade Ogunwale, Abuja

Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal has said the credibility or otherwise of the coming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states will define President Muhammadu Buhari’s electoral legacy.

He spoke against the backdrop of the visa ban imposed by the United States of America on some Nigerian politicians for their alleged roles in the violence that characterised the November 16, 2019 governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states.

In a statement yesterday, the governor stressed the need to strengthen the nation’s electoral process, to restore the hope and aspirations of Nigerians in democracy.

Tambuwal, who wrote in commemoration of the International Day of Democracy, marked globally every September 15, said: “Indeed the coming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states are a test case of our preparedness for a rule-based and consent-enabled governance.

“In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly resolved to observe  September 15 of every year as the International Day of Democracy, with the purpose of promoting and upholding the principles of democracy and invited member-states and organisations to commemorate the day in an appropriate manner that contributes to raising public awareness.

“The preamble of the resolution affirms that while democracies share common features, there is no single model of democracy and that democracy does not belong to any country or region…democracy is a universal value based on the freely-expressed will of people to determine their own political, economic, social and cultural systems, and their full participation in all aspects of life.”

UK deploys observers, threatens sanctions against violence sponsors

    Yusuf Alli, Abuja

The United Kingdom plans to deploy observers monitor Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State and ant the October 10 poll in Ondo State, its High Commissioner to Nigeria Catriona Laing said on Tuesday.

It also spoke of a plan to take action against sponsors of violence, including travel ban to the United Kingdom.

But it said the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, has met with the leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The decisions of the UK Government were contained in a statement in Abuja by the High Commission to Nigeria.

“These elections are important, both as an essential element of effective governance within both states and an indicator of the strength of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

“Our High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, has held meetings with leaders of the two main political parties, the APC and PDP.

“The discussions focused on the need for the parties’ leaders to prevail on supporters to avoid violence before and after the elections and we welcome the Edo candidates‘ signature of the National Peace Committee and INEC convened peace accord yesterday.

“We will be deploying observation missions to both the Edo and Ondo elections and supporting civil society led observation.

“The UK takes a strong stand against election-related violence and, just as we did in the general election in 2019, will continue to take action against individuals we identify as being responsible for violence during the elections.

“This could include restrictions on their eligibility to travel to the UK, restrictions on access to UK based assets or prosecution under international law.

“The UK will continue to provide support and engagement as we move towards these elections. We urge INEC, the Police and all other agencies involved to work together to deliver free, fair and credible elections.”

Tinubu urges voters to reject Obaseki

    Emmanuel Oladesu, Deputy Editor

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has urged voters to reject Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki at the polls on Saturday.

He described him as a dictator who undermined democracy in Edo State by preventing the swearing in of 14 members of the House of Assembly.

Tinubu said the electorate should reject Obaseki’s bid for second term the way he rejected the 14 legislators.

“Like he rejected the 14 members of the House of Assembly, reject him at the polls,” he said in a television interview.

The former Lagos governor urged voters to shun violence and maintain peace during the exercise.

Recalling that Obaseki rejected entreaties by the National Assembly and the Federal Attorney-General to allow the lawmakers take their seats, he said anyone who could stifle democratic growth does not deserve the “democratic ballot paper.”

Tinubu said it was lamentable that Obaseki vandalised the House of Assembly by removing the roofs and blocking its entrance with gravel to prevent the inauguration of the 14 members.

He said: “I want to appeal, as a committed democrat, and leader of all democrats, regardless of political parties, to our conscience and our commitment to democracy today, on the forthcoming election in Edo State.

“I want to appeal to you to reject Godwin Obaseki in this coming election. I have suffered with many others to bring out this democratic regime we are enjoying today in the country. Then, Godwin Obaseki didn’t participate in any aspect of the struggle to enshrine democracy in this country. Therefore, he could not understand the value and the pains that were associated with the democratic struggle.

“He was elected governor by you great people of Edo State because he presented himself to you as a democrat and he was sworn in after winning the election.

“No one prevented him from being sworn in. Thereafter, members of the House of Assembly who got elected along with him, 24 of them. Out of the 24, he prevented 14 of them from being sworn in. He demonstrated the act of dictatorship, lack of respect for the rule of law, lack of respect for you the people who voted for the legislators who were prevented from being sworn in.”

Tinubu added: “Today, he now comes to you, wanting you to vote for him. Please, I appeal to you; reject him. Several institutions and leaders across the country appealed to him to respect constitutional democracy.  But, he rejected all entreaties.  He rejected the appeal by the National Assembly and the Attorney-General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who enumerated the path of honour and constitution of the country.

“Rather than obey and respect the law, he vandalised the House of Assembly in Edo by removing the roof and pouring gravel on the entrance of the House of Assembly to prevent the 14 members from being sworn in.”

Wike: vote for Obaseki, Shaibu to end godfatherism

     Bisi Olaniyi, Benin

THE Chairman of the National Campaign Council of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the September 19 governorship election in Edo State, Chief Nyesom Wike, has urged the electorate to vote for Governor Godwin Obaseki and his deputy/running mate, Philip Shaibu, to end godfatherism in the state.

Wike, the Governor of Rivers State, made the admonition yesterday at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, while ending PDP’s campaigns with a mega rally.

Grand finale of the rally was also attended by Governors Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto) and Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta), as well as the National Chairman of PDP, Prince Uche Secondus; and a former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi; among other dignitaries.

Wike claimed that Obaseki had done his best in going round the 192 wards of Edo State to solicit the votes of residents, stressing that the large number of persons that attended the rally was an attestation that the Edo governor had done what he needed to do.

With the mammoth crowd at the rally, the Rivers governor claimed that Obaseki had already won the election, asking the electorate to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to announce the election result in favour of Governor Obaseki.

Tambuwal asked Edo residents to protect their votes, saying they should not be intimidated or allowed themselves to be enticed by money to sell their votes.

Okowa hailed Obaseki for moving round the 92 wards to campaign, hoping that he would emerge victorious on Saturday.

Obi said voting for the Edo governor would guarantee the people of the state and the unborn generations a brighter future.

Secondus urged lovers of democracy worldwide to ensure that Edo governorship election was free, fair and credible.

Obaseki noted that his electioneering in the 192 wards opened his eyes to some of the challenges in the rural areas, which he promised to address in his second term.

He appreciated the support of members and leaders of the PDP.

     Bisi Olaniyi, Benin

A CHIEFTAIN of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, Chief Hyacinth Enuha, has urged his fellow Anioma people in Edo State to massively vote on Saturday for the governorship candidate of the APC, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

He gave the advice on Tuesday in Benin, the Edo State capital, when he met with Anioma people.

Enuha enjoined his people in Edo State to be concerned about who governs the state, thereby making it imperative for them to vote wisely for Ize-Iyamu, whom he assured, would give them a sense of belonging and protect their businesses and property in Edo State.

He said since Edo and Delta states were together in the defunct Bendel State, the people of both states must continue to look over one another for mutual growth and benefits.

APC accusing others of what it is plotting to do, says PDP

    Our Reporter

EDO State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Campaign Council has described as false and mischievous, an allegation that it plots to burn the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state.

The Chairman of Media and Publicity Sub-committee of the Campaign Council, Chris Osa Nehikhare, in a statement, said the claim is a fabrication by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said: “We are amused by APC’s allegation of a plot to burn the INEC office in Edo State. The allegation is false and mischievous and should be disregarded.

“What should be troubling and of serious concern to Edo people, local and international observers in the election, is the antic of the APC to accuse others of an action it intends to execute. There is a trail of this sort of accusation and we want the security agencies to take the accusation seriously, as we are concerned that the APC may do what it has just accused others of.”

    ‘Why Obaseki should be re-elected’

     Bisi Olaniyi, Benin

A FORMER lawmaker representing Edo South, Senator Daisy Danjuma, has said Governor Godwin Obaseki should be re-elected, to continue his sterling governance and achievements.

She urged residents, especially women, to support Obaseki, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to be re-elected on Saturday.

Daisy, the wife of Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd.), speaking in Benin at a reception organised in her honour by Edo PDP women, said there was no need to change a performing team.

She added that Obaseki deserves a second term.

Mrs. Danjuma, a PDP chieftain, claimed that Edo governor’s sterling performance in all sectors of the economy compelled her to endorse his candidacy for a second term.

She said: “Obaseki was in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and I saw all what he was doing in Edo State. I then said this was not about party, but about the individual.

“He (Obaseki) has done well, but as a member of the Board of Trustees of PDP, I support him for continuity, even before his defection to the PDP.

“Since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, former governor Lucky Igbinedion ruled Edo State for eight years; Comrade Adams Oshiomhole also governed for eight years. Why is it that a performing governor (Obaseki) will not do eight years?

“There is no reason a performing governor will not have a second term. I know Obaseki will do something great. This is why I said despite my party, I must support him for a second term, so that he can finish the good programmes he has started.”
