    Alia appoints Ojobo Benue Poly Rector

    Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia has approved the appointment of Arc. Dr. Henry Ojobo as Rector of Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo, for a single tenure of five years from April 1, 2025.

    Ojobo, a highly respected academic, urban planner, and environmental sustainability expert, brings over 20 years of experience in architectural education, research, and professional practice.

    His appointment marks a significant step toward revitalizing the institution and advancing technical education in Benue State.

    A statement by the Permanent Secretary, Government House Administration, Mr. Bartholomew Geraga, explained Ojobo’s appointment aligns with the recommendations of the Governing Council of the Polytechnic.

    The statement noted that his wealth of experience and exceptional leadership in academia as well as his vast contributions to urban and environmental planning, positioned him as the ideal candidate to lead Benue State Polytechnic into a new era of academic and infrastructural development.

    Ojobo hails from Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State and has a distinguished academic background that spans national and international institutions.

    He obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Architecture from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, before proceeding to Universiti Teknologi Malaysia where he earned a Ph.D. in Architecture, specialising in Landscape Architecture.

    His research interests focus on the built environment, environmental sustainability and the psycho-physiological benefits of landscape design.

    As a seasoned academic, Ojobo has served in various leadership capacities at Kaduna State University where he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture.

    He was the Head of the Department of Architecture (2018–2021) and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences (2019–2023). He also served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Kaduna State University Environmental Sciences Journal from 2019 to 2022.

    His research portfolio includes over 50 peer-reviewed publications in both international and national journals, making significant contributions to architectural and environmental studies.

    Beyond academia, Ojobo has been actively involved in professional practice and is a recognized expert in urban and regional planning.

    He is a registered member of several professional organizations, including the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON), the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), the Association of Architectural Educators in Nigeria (AARCHES) and the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES). His practical experience includes diverse architectural projects ranging from luxury hotels to mass housing developments across Nigeria.

    A strong advocate for community development, Ojobo has demonstrated leadership beyond the classroom. He served as the President of the Rotary Club, Kubwa Gateway, during the 2022/2023 Rotary Year, where he spearheaded various humanitarian projects. His leadership in professional and community-based organizations underscores his commitment to both institutional excellence and societal progress.

    The Governing Council of Benue State Polytechnic also approved the appointments of three other principal officers to strengthen the institution’s administrative and financial management.

    Dr. Sunday Apochi – Registrar

    Mr. Kase Joseph Chihinen – Bursar

    Mr. Antse Terfa Benjamin – Librarian

    A statement by the Chairman of the Polytechnic’s Governing Council, Dr. Damian Tersoo Anyam, confirmed that these appointments take effect from April 3, 2025.

    The Council expressed confidence that the newly appointed officers, with Ojobo, will work collaboratively to reposition the Polytechnic and enhance its academic and administrative excellence.

    The Ekiti State University (EKSU) has explained the reason why its Governing Council and Senate decided to confer honorary doctorate award on the Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele.

    The university, in a letter by its Registrar, Mr. Ife Oluwole, said it was in recognition of Bamidele’s contribution to the development of the institution, Nigeria and the international community.

    Bamidele, according to the letter, will be honoured alongside Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service, Dr. Zach Adedeji, and Chairman, Governing Board, Bank of Industry, Dr. Mansur Muhtar, during its next convocation scheduled to hold on March 29, 2025.

    The letter said: “I have the pleasure to inform you that the Governing Council and Senate of the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, have resolved to honour you with the conferment of an honorary degree, Doctor of Law (Honoris Causa) at the forthcoming convocation scheduled to take place on 29th March 2025.

    “The conferment of the degree is purely in recognition of Senator Bamidele’s significant contributions to the development of this university, our dear country and the international community.

    “Other nominees for the conferment of honorary degree at the forthcoming convocation are Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service, Dr. Zach Adedeji and Chairman, Governing Board, Bank of Industry, Dr. Mansur Muhtar, who served as the Minister of Finance under late President Umaru Yar’Adua,” Oluwole said in the letter.

    Bamidele, in a statement by his Directorate of Media and Public Affairs, on Sunday, thanked the Governing Council and Senate of the Institution for the resolve to confer the honorary doctorate on him.

    He said the conferment of the honorary doctorate is a challenge for the pursuit of greater public good, to which he was utterly committed.

    He, thus, vowed to leverage his good office to promote the rule of law; pursue the enactment of pro-people legislations and lead the path to collective peace and prosperity across the federation.

    Before the latest conferment, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, conferred Doctor of Public Law (Honoris Causa) on Bamidele on February 11, 2024. Also, Joseph Ayo Babalola University honoured him with the Doctor of Public Administration (Honoris Causa) on January 23, 2023.

    Both institutions conferred the honours on the Senate Leader, citing his commitment to the development of progressive legislations and the pursuit of national peace through pro-people legislations.

    FG seeks collaboration to fix education

    The Federal Government has called for collaboration from partners and stakeholders to fix the country’s educational system.

    Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa said this during a meeting with representatives from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Abuja.

    In a statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations of the ministry, Boriowo Folasade, the Minister said the government needed collaborative efforts to ensure that “our investments yield measurable results.”

    He emphasised the need for all partners to align their projects and programs with Nigeria’s priorities to address the country’s educational challenges.

    “We must work together to fix our country’s educational system. The era of working in isolation is gone. We need collaborative efforts to ensure that our investments yield measurable results,” the Minister said.

    “The era of working in isolation is gone. We must ensure that all interventions are aligned with our national priorities to effectively fix our education sector. JICA’s new interventions are commendable. However, we must scale up these efforts by incorporating UBEC to ensure that at least one effective school is established in each of the 36 states,” Alausa added.

    The Minister stressed the importance of UBEC’s involvement in expanding the effective school initiative nationwide.

    He proposed that teachers under the SMASE project receive training in effective school locations to ensure synergy.

    The Minister proposed a high-level meeting involving JICA, UBEC, and the ministry which will be held in April to finalise a joint financing strategy for nationwide implementation.

    JICA’s Chief Representative, Yuzurio Susumu, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s education sector.

    He highlighted JICA’s initiatives, including curriculum development, ICT integration, and teacher training.

    Programme Coordinator for Education at JICA Nigeria, Mr. Nwanya Stephen outlined the agency’s ongoing efforts in education, focusing on teacher development, social mobilisation, and school infrastructure improvements.

    “The Federal Ministry of Education remains committed to working closely with JICA and other development partners to drive meaningful reforms in the education sector. The upcoming meeting in April will serve as a platform to finalise collaborative strategies for scaling up the effective school model across all 36 states, ensuring long-term sustainability and nationwide impact,” the statement added.

    Education agency engages stakeholders on 2025/2026 academic calendar

    The Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), an agency under the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, has engaged key stakeholders in the education sector to develop an academic calendar for the 2025/2026 session.

    The engagement was geared toward developing a new calendar that reflects the views and expectations of all major players.

    Speaking during a preliminary stakeholders’ meeting held on Wednesday at the NUT Pavilion, Ikeja the Supervising Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Sesan Ogundeko, addressed major education stakeholders and emphasised the state government’s commitment to an effective and structured academic calendar.

    Represented by the Director of the Basic Education Services Department, Mrs. Abosede Adumasi, Ogundeko reassured stakeholders that the final academic calendar would be designed to support academic excellence, student well-being, and holistic learner development across Lagos State.

    In his welcome address, the Coordinating Director of OEQA, Mr. Remi Abdul, stressed the importance of collaboration in designing an academic calendar that ensures efficiency and stability in Lagos State schools.

    He acknowledged the commitment of education stakeholders and clarified that the meeting was meant to gather insights, analyze perspectives, and develop strategic options – not to finalize the academic calendar.

    He also issued a strong warning that schools failing to comply with the final academic calendar would face serious consequences and sanctions from the state government.

    The Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics Department at OEQA, Idowu Hakeem Kehinde acknowledged an improvement in compliance with the 2024/2025 Academic Calendar but emphasised that OEQA expects full compliance with the 2025/2026 Academic Calendar currently under deliberation.

    The Director of Research at OEQA, Mrs. Evelyn Pelemo, who anchored the plenary recommended that stakeholders should organize themselves into groups consisting of 10 participants per table each led by a Team Lead and a Secretary for proper structured deliberations.

    An Assistant Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics at OEQA, David Ojelade, provided a review of last year’s calendar development process and outlined the 2025/2026 academic guidelines for participants. He noted that the minimum number of learning days remains 180, the mid-term break remains one week, and school resumption after the New Year break will be in the second week of January.

    Representatives of the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB), Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON), public and private school representatives, parent-teacher associations, examination bodies, and education administrators attended the meeting..

    A faction of the University of Ilorin Alumni Association is back in court challenging the election of Prof Kilani AbdulRazak-led faction.

    Chairmen of eight chapters of the association have approached an Ilorin, Kwara state High Court seeking the nullification of last year’s election that produced Prof AbdulRazak and his executive members.

    They described the purported election of Prof AbdulRazak in August 2024 as invalid and illegal.

    The eight chapters are the applicants in the current matter, while Prof AbdulRazak and ten others are the respondents.

    The association has in the last four years, been rocked by a leadership crisis leading to its factionalisation.

    The chapters challenging the current exco include Oyo, Ogun, Odun, Ondo, Kogi, Rivers, and Abuja.

    AbdulRazak at an award night shortly after last year’s convocation of the institution, claimed that the crisis had been resolved.

    The Federal Government has inaugurated the Governing Council and principal officers of the newly established Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia, Kaduna State.

    The new university is expected to commence academic activities by September 2025.

    Minister of Education, Dr Olatunji Alausa, who performed the inauguration yesterday in Abuja, announced that the university’s operational budget has already been captured in the 2025 national budget.

    He clarified that, unlike other newly established institutions, the Kachia university will not receive a special take-off grant, as all essential infrastructure and facilities are already in place for the smooth commencement of academic programmes.

    The minister noted that the establishment of the university forms part of the government’s broader educational reforms, particularly its commitment to advancing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.

    He said the university will offer high-tech courses in Applied Sciences, with future plans to establish a College of Medicine.

    The minister stressed that the creation of the institution is a deliberate effort to spur development in Southern Kaduna and ensure fairness and inclusiveness in the distribution of federal educational institutions across the country.

    He said: “We, at the Ministry of Education, will give you all the maximum support. We’ll walk down the clock to ensure that this starts.”

    The minister disclosed that the Ministry has already written to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to include the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia, in its portal for admissions, while resource verification by the National Universities Commission (NUC) is underway.

    He confirmed that the NUC is expected to visit the university on April 7, after which all preliminary processes would be completed.

    The minister added that the university will run programmes in Applied Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Sciences and Medical Sciences.

    In his remarks, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Bishop Matthew Kukah, described the establishment of the university as a significant solution to the long-standing developmental challenges of Southern Kaduna.

    He said: “Nigeria may have its own problems, and will continue to have its own problems, but I can assure you, Honourable Minister, that 60% of the problems of Southern Kaduna now have been solved.”

    Bishop Kukah attributed the realisation of the university to divine intervention, and pledged the commitment of the Council to make the institution a model of academic excellence.

    He said: “By locating this University of Applied Sciences, you have presented tools to us. And I want to assure you that we will do everything that is humanly possible. Don’t be disappointed, Mr President.”

    The Bishop also highlighted Southern Kaduna’s high intellectual capital, noting that the region currently has over 200 professors, a reflection of its long-standing tradition of education nurtured by missionary efforts.

    Also speaking at the event, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, assured of adequate security for the university and all learning institutions across the country.

    He expressed optimism that the university would evolve into a centre of academic excellence and a unifying platform for Nigerians in the region.

    It was an outpour of commendations and encomiums in honour of Dele Omojuyigbe PhD after spending 21 illustrious years in the Nigeria Institute of Journalism (NIJ), Lagos. 

    Family members, friends, associates, colleagues, admirers and well-wishers of Dr. Omojuyigbe converged on institution for a special send-off ceremony to celebrate his virtues and accomplishments all through his decades of service to the institution.

    The send-off event had in attendance: Former Special Adviser to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina who served as the chairman of the event; The Nation’s columnist, Femi Macaulay; Former Online Editor for The Nation, Lekan Otufodurin, NIJ Alumni President, Dr. Awosanya and other dignitaries.

    Omojuyigbe joined the institution in 2004 and also served as the institution’s Deputy Provost, a position he held for two years.

    Reading the citation, NIJ Registrar, Mrs Patricia Kalesanwo said: “Dele Omojuyigbe is a journalist and teacher. He holds a Doctorate in English from the University of Ibadan, with a specialization in Critical Discourse Analysis (Media Language Option). His Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees were also in English, from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and the University of Lagos, respectively. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism from the Independent Journalism Centre, College of Journalism, Lagos.

    “Omojuyigbe worked at Daily Times Plc from 1989 to 1998 as a feature writer, and later as acting editor of Headlines, a sister publication of Daily Times newspaper. He joined Grapevine news magazine as associate editor in 1998, and later became the editor of Meru magazine, a specialized publication focusing on African culture, health, and development. He later became the publisher/editor of College Reports Journal.

    “Omojuyigbe joined the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) in Ogba, Lagos, in 2004, where he served as Head of the Department of General Studies for 15 years, and later as Deputy Provost for two terms of four years. Ten years ago, he was an adjunct lecturer at Lead City University, Ibadan. While on sabbatical from NIJ in 2015-2016, he served on the Editorial Board of Daily Independent newspaper in Lagos. Omojuyigbe has written many academic journal articles and published books.”

    The Provost of NIJ, Gbenga Adefaye in his remarks eulogised Omojuyigbe, for his decades of service to the institution, especially his diligence, dedication, passion, hard work and commitment to work.

    He said, “What we are doing here today is the first of its kind. Dr. Omojuyigbe was part of the team that reformatted NIJ. He welcomed me to this institution, and I must confess, he has exhibited exceptional integrity in working with him.”

    The guest speaker at the event, Dr. Dapo Thomas, a senior lecturer at Lagos State University in the Department of History and International Studies, urged journalists-in-training to dream big and jettison unprofessionalism, emphasising it diminishes one’s status.

    Speaking on the topic: “The Journalist and His Vanishing Dream: The End of an Intervention”, Dr. Thomas said: “A journalist is a professional gathering information, more appropriately what the Yoruba would call ‘Alarinka.’ They are regarded as the watchdogs or, better still, security dogs or vigilantes.

    “The first dream of a journalist is to become a thoroughbred professional. They want to be an influential and famous professional who can help in shaping opinions and influencing government decisions or policies. To avoid being an ‘Alarinka’—walking around the streets late in search of news—they dream of becoming famous and reputable so they don’t have to walk the streets before getting their news.

    “As far as I’m concerned, there’s no crime in a professional dreaming of becoming wealthy or successful. It is legitimate. I mean, it’s a legitimate dream.

    “Every journalist should think outside the box. Leave the circle of the brown envelope. Turn yourself into a brand. Make a name. Maintain your integrity and never limit yourself to the brown envelope. Don’t get addicted to it. Editors in the newsroom should give reporters room to grow regardless of the monetary rewards and nurture them not to limit themselves to the envelope.

    “Journalism is time-consuming; it’s a job where you arrive and don’t know your closing time. If you want to be truly dedicated to journalism, you will work and forget about your personal life. So, be wise! While you’re trying to make a name for yourself, don’t get too committed by neglecting yourself for other opportunities. 

    “Create other sources of income for yourself, even within the journalism circle. Carve a niche for yourself. Do not compromise your values, standards, or morals.

    “Plan the end from the beginning. Do not be caught off guard. Plan your retirement from the moment you begin because, one day, this dream you are pursuing will come to an end.”

    The highlight of the event was goodwill messages and gift presentations from colleagues and well-wishers who graced the occasion. 

    Dr. Omojuyigbe in his appreciation message expressed his sincere gratitude. He said: “Honestly, i don’t know what to say, i am amazed, and that’s why i started with singing to God, i thank you all for this honor, i was in the dark of all of these, i didn’t even know you had all this planned, to the students, thank you very much, they are writing their exams and fasting at the same time, thank you all.

    ALSCON sponsors quiz competition for host communities

    RUSAL, managers of the Aluminum Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON), has sponsored a quiz competition among selected secondary schools in Ikot Abasi local government area of Akwa Ibom State.

    The quiz tournament tagged: ‘Rusal Educational Summit 2025’ was organyized by the community Education Development Initiative (CEDI) with support from RUSAL, managers of ALSCON.

    The competition, which took place at the Alscon Staff Secondary School, was aimed at boosting the educational growth and development of students of the company’s host communities.

    The General Manager Public Relations of ALSCON, Mr. Alexander Ashkinazi, who declared the quiz tournament open, said the quiz competition was part of the company’s community social responsibility (CSR) to it’s host communities.

    Apart from the quiz tournament, Ashkinazi maintained that ALSCON has initiated several educational and skills empowerment programmes within and outside the company for indigenes of Ikot Abasi local government area and it’s environs.

    He said: “RUSAL’s management pays great attention to the educational process and everything related to increasing students’ motivation and developing useful practical skills.

    “We have initiated a series of essential processes for the community, including: Providing assistance in the Russia-Nigeria bilateral educational program. 

    “Currently, 10 sons and daughters of Ikot Abasi are already involved in it. In 2024, 7 students were sent. In 2025, 5 candidates, of which 3 are already studying, and 2 are preparing to be sent. Currently, 11 are undergoing pre-training for dispatch at the end of 2025”.

    On skills acquisition trainings Ashkinazi said,: “As part of the Fork Lift initiative, which is an active form of the industrial attachment, 5 young men have been trained and acquired the skills to operate a Forklift truck. 

    “Computer classes are conducted on the basis of our laboratory, in which 2 groups of 17 students have already graduated. The third group of 9 people is being trained.

    “We have initiated the second round of Industrial attachment in the areas of welder and mechanic – this is a pilot program that started on March 03, 2025 and involves 2 representatives of Icot Abasi.

    “The Ikot Abasi Skills Acquisition Centre for girls was opened in November 2024. Now children have the opportunity to acquire practical skills by studying hairdressing, modeling, manicure and pedicure, tailoring and shoemaking.  The association of young single mothers contacted us and now the center provides them with free assistance”.

    He said that RUSAL’s management and ALSCON are firmly committed to the goal of resuming ALSCON’s operations after resolving the key issues like the legal dispute over ownership and stable gas supply after a feasible price has been agreed on.

    “We are confident that through joint efforts with the support of the community and their leaders at the local and regional levels, as well as with the participation of the federal government, it will be possible to resolve all existing obstacles”, Ashkinazi said.

    The Coordinator of CEDI, Comrade Uboho Oku explained that the quiz competition was organised to promote academic excellence and boost the minds of young people in Ikot Abasi.

    “We sincerely appreciate RUSAL, the managers of ALSCON for sponsorship this quiz competition aimed at promoting academic excellence and brightening the future of young people”, he said.

    ALSCON Staff Secondary School emerged overall winner of the quiz competition followed by Saint Theresa Secondary School which came second. Ten  schools participated in the quiz competition.
