NEDC lifts ATBU with fire station, truck

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi,  Gubi Campus has received a safety boost with the donation of a modern fire station, a new firefighting truck, a functional borehole, and office facilities from the North East Development Commission (NEDC).

At the inauguration of the new fire station, which will operate 24 hours, Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari Ahmadu, handed over the facility on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing it as a “privilege” to deliver the project.

He commended the president for supporting all development commissions under the ministry, which, he said, made the completion of the project possible.

The minister urged the university community to “take ownership of this and other NEDC projects” to ensure proper maintenance and appreciation of the government’s efforts.

“When communities embrace these projects, it reassures the government that resources are well-utilised,” he added.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on NEDC also commended the commission for implementing initiatives that directly improve the living standards of people across the North East.

He emphasised that the project will support ATBU in responding to fire emergencies, even as he hoped such disasters would be avoided.

NEDC Managing Director/CEO, Mohammed Alkali Goni, noted that the project was designed to safeguard life and property within the university community  encouraging the management to maintain the facilities.

Receiving the project on behalf of ATBU, Vice Chancellor Professor Ibrahim Hassan Garba expressed deep gratitude to Allah and to the NEDC for the initiative.

Represented by the university librarian, Dr. Dauda Adamu Bakum, the VC described the station as “a vital shield for our university, neighbouring communities, and the entire Bauchi State.”

Prof Garba disclosed that the station is more than a building. “It is a beacon of security equipped with modern firefighting tools and a rapid-response vehicle that will protect laboratories, hostels, lecture halls, and the over 23,000 people who call ATBU home.”

Varsity Mentor to hold AI summit in Lagos

A three-day Generative AI Education Summit to empower university students is set to hold in Lagos.

This high-impact event, being organised by VarsityMentor, a non-profit is part of the broader strategic mandate funded by the GenAI in CS Education Consortium that was created by University of San Diego.

The summit, which will be held from February 18 to 20, is aimed at bridging the digital gap, leading African universities into the evolving world of Artificial Intelligence and modernizing Computer Science (CS) curricula across the continent for the AI-driven future.

The summit will bring together academic faculty from multiple African universities and visionary tech professionals and founders.

“Our vision is to raise a new generation of African graduates who are not just consumers of technology, but the architects of the global AI revolution,” said Obinna Anya, Founder of VarsityMentor and a UX Researcher at Google.

The summit will be anchored on three core objectives: Curriculum Co-Creation which entails Hands-on design sessions where faculty and industry leaders will rebuild CS modules to include AI-driven development and ethics; Policy Alignment, that is engaging the Ministry of Education officials from various African countries, to ensure that new educational standards are scalable and recognized at a national level; and Talent Pipeline Development to create direct links between universities and the burgeoning African tech ecosystem to foster internships and job placement.

The summit will also feature a panel highlighting prominent tech founders, hosted by Valerie Ehimhen, a Technical Program Manager in Google Quantum AI, and co-founder of PETGA Initiative. Valerie Ehimhen stressed “The industry is moving at a pace that traditional curricula often struggle to match.

By bringing founders and faculty into the same room, we are ensuring, that the next generation of African engineers is equipped with the exact skills —specifically inGenAI and systems thinking—that the market is demanding right now.”

Building on the need for technical rigor, Adekunle Adeyemo, a Software Engineer and long-time global lead of the Africans@Google employee resource group, emphasized the importance of infrastructure and reliability in education, noting that scaling the African tech ecosystem requires more than just access to new tools; it requires a robust foundation of systems-level thinking and reliability.

According to the Media Consultant to VarsityMentor, Sir Peter Osamgbi, the event will be attended by computer science faculty, curriculum leads, department heads, ministry of education representatives and education innovators from 27 African universities across Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Malawi and Ethiopia.

This upcoming summit marks a strategic evolution for VarsityMentor, which is deepening the proven precedent set by its two previous large-scale conferences.

Those earlier events focused specifically on student empowerment and professional readiness; this current mandate shifts the focus upstream to the institutional level, ensuring that the very foundations of African computer science education are aligned with the AI-driven future.

VarsityMentor is a nonprofit educational organization founded in 2021 and a digital network of African tech professionals in the diaspora committed to tackling the problem of graduate unemployment in Africa. The organisation connects university students in Africa with vetted African professionals and allies for mentoring, skills development and career pathway guidance.

  • Igbobi College Founders’ Day: Osinbajo advocates sustainable financial strength for schools

Igbobi College Founders’ Day: Osinbajo advocates sustainable financial strength for schools

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says educational institutions must deliberately build sustainable financial strength through endowment funding to secure their future relevance, quality and values.

Osinbajo said this while delivering the 94th Founders’ Day Lecture of Igbobi College, Yaba, Lagos.

The theme of the anniversary lecture is: “Building Generational Strength for Educational Institutions in Nigeria.”

According to him, endowment funding provides long-term financial stability that enables schools to support staff and students, maintain facilities, expand academic programmes, and withstand economic and leadership transitions.

“We must intentionally build permanent financial strength for schools so they can serve future generations with equal or greater impact,” Osinbajo said.

He explained that educational endowments are long-term invested funds whose returns are used to fund scholarships, staff welfare, infrastructure development, and institutional operations over time.

The former vice president, an alumnus of the school, described legacy as the enduring impact institutions leave beyond their present generation, adding that strong endowments ensure continuity of values and sustained excellence.

Osinbajo cited examples from the United States, noting that institutions such as Phillips Academy, Andover, and other members of the Eight Schools Association maintain endowments valued at about 1.3 billion dollars.

He said many globally renowned schools rely on such funds to remain world-class and relevant across generations.

In his remarks, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said the significance of Igbobi College at 94 years lies in its sustained relevance, as its alumni continue to contribute to leadership, ethics, and productivity nationwide.

Sanwo-Olu said sustainability had become the true measure of educational excellence, adding that the launch of an endowment fund demonstrated a commitment to long-term stability and quality education.

“Excellence cannot rely on goodwill alone; it must be deliberately financed, nurtured and sustained,” the governor said.

He stressed the need for partnerships among government, alumni, educators, and the private sector, urging legacy institutions to move beyond nostalgia and focus on measurable impact through strategic planning and financial foresight.

Sanwo-Olu was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun.

Earlier, the 12th President of the Igbobi College Old Boys Association (ICOBA), Mr. Yomi Badejo-Okusanya, said the association had initiated a N10 billion endowment fund to preserve the school’s founding vision of nurturing future leaders.

Badejo-Okusanya said the fund, driven by alumni contributions, was aimed at sustaining academic standards, strengthening infrastructure, and securing the college’s long-term legacy.

“Just as our founders planned for us without knowing us, we must intentionally plan for future generations,” he said.

ICOBA presented plaques to Osinbajo and Sanwo-Olu at the event, which attracted alumni from across the country and abroad, as well as students and staff of the college.

The Founders’ Day celebration, organised by ICOBA, also featured a Holy Communion service at the Igbobi College, Yaba, jointly founded by the Anglican and Methodist missions.

Foundation gifts Lagos primary schools exercise books

    • By Igbang Juliet Ikedie

The Ayo Lawal Empowerment Foundation has distributed exercise books to pupils of selected public primary schools in Oworo, Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The beneficiary schools are: Muslim Mission Primary School, Oworo; Ayeroju Nursery and Primary School, Oworo; Mosafejo Nursery and Primary School; Local Government Nursery and Primary School; and Oworonshoki Nursery and Primary School, Oworo.

Speaking during the outreach, Founder and Executive Director of the Ayo Lawal Empowerment Foundation, Mr. Ayo Lawal, explained that the initiative was inspired by his personal experience as a university student.

According to him, while in school, he observed how many students struggled to remain in the university because they could not afford tuition fees and basic learning materials. In some cases, these students were denied the opportunity to sit for their final examinations, he said.

Lawal said this motivated him and a group of friends to contribute funds to support about 20 students at the time. The initiative officially started on February 4, 2007, which coincides with his birthday. He noted that the foundation is now 19 years old.

He revealed that the foundation is distributing about 5,000 exercise books across five schools in Oworo. He added that just the previous week, the foundation carried out a similar outreach in Agbado, Ogun State, and plans are underway to visit Oyo State in the coming months, with the goal of expanding to other states across Nigeria.

He explained that the foundation’s mission is to encourage children to stay in school, stressing that every child deserves access to basic education.

His words: “Imagine how engagement and interaction will be in our communities if everyone is educated. We will have fewer hooligans. Reducing the number of out-of-school children will also help reduce crime in our society.”

Mr. Lawal further appealed to well-meaning Nigerians, scholars, and organisations to support the foundation, noting that even donations of N1,000 or N2,000 can make a significant difference.

He stated that while 3,000 exercise books were distributed last year, the foundation increased the number to 5,000 this year, with a target of 10,000 exercise books next year.

Speaking on behalf of Oworonshoki Nursery and Primary School, the Head teacher, Mrs. Mobanji Stella, described the initiative as very important to the pupils.

She explained that many parents cannot afford basic learning materials, and pupils often turn to teachers for help.

“Books are very important because every child needs them to learn. We are grateful to the Ayo Lawal Empowerment Foundation for this kind gesture,” she said.

Mrs. Oluwole Oluwabukola Oluwatoyin, Head Teacher of Local Government Nursery and Primary School, expressed her appreciation, describing the intervention as a complement to government efforts.

She noted that teachers often provide learning materials for pupils from their personal resources and said more NGO interventions would greatly improve students’ learning experience.

One of the beneficiaries, Felix Zanu, a Primary 6 pupil of Oworonshoki Primary School, said he was happy to receive two exercise books.

  • Afe Babalola: A commitment to workers welfare

Afe Babalola: A commitment to workers welfare

    •  By Tunde Olofintila

Everywhere across all civilizations, people express their emotions by the opening of their mouths in songs of praise and appreciation and the opening of their lachrymose glands by sobbing and crying. Some others burst into an orgy of singing, sobbing and crying when they are riled.

The former was the situation at Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, ABUAD, on Friday, January 23, 2026, when the University’s Founder & Chancellor, Aare Afe Babalola, OFR, CON, SAN, LL. D (London), Fellow, King’s College, London, FNAE, opened a bouquet of pleasant surprises of enhanced salaries, allowances and other mouth-watering perks for his staff.

The early afternoon surprise by Babalola was a further affirmation of former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s position on his age-long friend who he described in March 2024 as “a man full of surprises, a man who had lived by surprises, a man who has lived from one surprise to another”.

During Babalola’s surprise announcement that Friday afternoon, there were wild jubilation and spontaneous eruption of sonorous rendition of songs of appreciation by ABUAD Band, prime among which was: “Na our papa be dis oo, we no get another one, na our papa be dis oo”

As sartorial and dapper as ever, Babalola stressed his good news to his staff  was a fallout of what the Federal Government recently agreed to be paying the staff of Federal Universities.

Even though Babalola, a two-term Pro Chancellor & Chairman of Council of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, made it clear from the beginning that the Staff Congress was called to thank the staff and appreciate them for their stellar contributions to the university, he ended up being praised, eulogized, and appreciated and applauded for his most unexpected New Year bounty to the staff of his university.

Read Also: Tinubu, Obasanjo, Mimiko, Fasoranti, others bag Ondo golden jubilee awards

Babalola profoundly acknowledged and thanked all categories of staff for their commitment and dedication over the years, which he said accounted for the bouquet of national, continental and global acknowledgments, endorsements and laurels which the university had continually won as a result of which it has become the toast of its peers, including those that are several decades older than the 16-year-old university.

The combination of all these has always been part of the reasons the university had always paid higher salaries and allowances to its workers.

His words: “You know as much as I do that structures alone and beautiful environment do not define a university. Rather a university properly-so-called consists of serene and decent environment, well-equipped laboratories, modern equipment, students who are disciplined, cultured and ready to learn, and quality faculty members”.

He added: “We thank God through you and our students that we have been able to meet all these parameters. These have made us the clear leader in the comity of universities not only in Nigeria but worldwide. For your information, on June 18, last year in faraway Turkey, The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings (THEIRS) 2025 rated our University as No. 1 university in Nigeria for four consecutive years: 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025, No. 3 in Africa, and No. 84 globally.

“This upward trajectory is the mark of excellence which was pursued with discipline and integrity and yielded measurable results. These were your collective efforts under the leadership of my Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Smaranda Olarinde, and the CMD of our Multi-System Hospital, Dr. Akinola Akinmade, and their commendable teams.

“You all keyed into my vision and we are jointly accomplishing ABUAD’s mission. While acknowledging your immense contributions, I wish to reaffirm that ABUAD values and appreciates its staff, my supporters”.

The elder statesman recalled that over the years, the university has introduced several welfare and incentive measures as tangible expressions of this appreciation. Such welfare and incentives include timely and regular salary payments since inception in 2010, annual staff awards and promotion for deserving staff, 40% tuition discount for staff and their children for academic pursuit at ABUAD, and sponsorship of academic staff for post-doctoral programmes within and outside Nigeria.

Others are contribution of 7.5% of monthly staff salaries to the National Contributory Pension Scheme by the university, while staff also contribute 7.5% to the Pension Scheme, sponsorship for Staff to Seminars and Conferences within and outside Nigeria, 30% discount on staff hospital bills at the Afe Babalola Multisystem Hospital.

Said he: “Recently the Federal Government released the reviewed remuneration package of academic staff of Federal Universities. In the same way, the Federal Government released the reviewed allowances for Health Professionals in Federal Public Service.

“The good news now is that I have directed the University’s Bursary Department to immediately commence internal alignment processes in this regard with effect from this month, January 2026.

Unlike the Non-Academic Staff who were not captured in the approved Government new salary for the Academic Staff of Nigerian universities, ABUAD Non-Academic Staff are not left out of Babalola’s New Year largesse.

In his words: “In addition, I have also extended the gesture to the Non-Academic Staff of this university, which was not captured by the approved Government new salary for universities academic staff”.

He reminded his staff that the vision of building a world-class university, one anchored on discipline, innovation, relevance, and global competitiveness, is no longer an aspiration. Rather, it is a living reality where they are active players.

His parting words: “History will remember that when the future of university education in Nigeria was at stake, a committed community of Scholars, Professionals and Administrators rose to the occasion and chose excellence over convenience”.

At the end of the Founder’s presentation, the capacity-filled Alfa Belgore Multi-Purpose Hall burst into songs of praises to God and appreciation to Babalola for his most altruistic gesture.

When it was time for questions and comments from them, the staff chorused in unison: “Ko s’oro (meaning we don’t have any question or comment). The Founder has spoken; we don’t have anything to add except to continue to thank and appreciate him for his large-heartedness”.

Responding on behalf of their colleagues, the Director of Drug Research, Prof. Olaposi Omotuyi, and the Director of Part-Time Studies, Dr. Ife Ajepe, thanked the Founder for always being mindful of the wellbeing and welfare of his staff, who he often refers to as his partners.

Both Omotuyi and Ajepe acknowledged Babalola’s gesture as a call to more duty and a catalyst that will encourage all to do more in their collective resolve to ensure that ABUAD remains the clear leader in the comity of universities nationally and globally.

A political group under the auspices of Tinubu Grassroots Network (TGN) has distributed learning materials to student of Notre Dame Grammar School, Usi-Ekiti, in Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

Speaking during the outreach, Convener of the group, Ojo Foluso Sylvanus, said the initiative was aimed at  promoting education and deepen awareness of the policies and programmes of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration at the grassroots.

Sylvanus explained that members of the network travelled from Abuja to Ekiti to interact with students and  community members, noting that many citizens who were meant to benefit from government policies were not adequately informed about available opportunities.

He added the programme, tagged “Back to School Initiative (BSI) focused on the distribution of educational materials with civic sensitisation designed to help the students understand governance as well as public policies.

He described children as the bedrock of society, stressing that empowering them with knowledge would enable them to share vital information with their parents and guardians, some of whom may not understand government programmes or how to access their benefits.

Sylvanus  added that the initiative was structured to create a ripple effect in communities, where informed students could help bridge the communication gap between policymakers and grassroots populations.

The Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Prof Olugbemisola Odusote, has endorsed the Prada Uzodimma Law School Scholarship Grant (PUSG), citing its sustained contribution to improving access to legal education for financially disadvantaged Nigerian law graduates.

The endorsement followed a courtesy visit by the Founder of PUSG, Dr. Prada O. Uzodimma, Esq., who met with the Director-General for congratulations on her recent appointment and brief her on the scholarship’s objectives, governance framework and track record of impact.

During the engagement, Odusote acknowledged the initiative’s consistency and transparency and expressed support for its continued growth.

PUSG is implemented in partnership with Principle Legal Consult as part of its corporate social responsibility framework, with a focus on ensuring that qualified candidates admitted to the Nigerian Law School are not denied the opportunity to proceed due to financial limitations.

The endorsement builds on earlier institutional backing received by PUSG from the former Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Isa Chiroma, as well as endorsement from the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

The continuity of support across successive leadership underscores the initiative’s credibility within Nigeria’s legal education landscape.

Since its establishment, the scholarship scheme has expanded steadily in scope and reach.

Beneficiaries have grown year-on-year as follows:

    • 2021: 5 beneficiaries

Beneficiaries are also supported through internship placements and post–Law School employment opportunities facilitated through the programme’s professional network.

Commenting on the endorsement, Uzodimma said, “The endorsement by the current Director-General of the Nigerian Law School affirms the governance standards, accountability framework, and long-term sustainability of PUSG. Our focus extends beyond financial support to the deliberate development of competent, ethical, and socially responsible legal practitioners.”

Odusote commended the initiative’s continuity and impact, noting the importance of structured private-sector interventions in promoting merit-based access to legal education.

Board suspends exam towns’ selection for 2026 UTME candidates in Ekiti

Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has suspended the selection of examination towns for candidates registering for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Ekiti State.

The board made this known in a statement yesterday in Abuja by its spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin.

He said the suspension was to enable the board restructure examination towns to ensure closer proximity to candidates and reduce transportation challenges on examination days.

He said although candidates were usually allowed to select examination towns closest to their locations, the 2026 UTME registration began before structural anomalies were, however, detected in Ekiti’s examination towns’ configuration.

Benjamin said the anomalies necessitated urgent adjustments in the interest of candidates, prompting the temporary suspension of town selection in the state.

According to him, candidates will be unable to select any examination town in Ekiti State, while the adjustment process is ongoing.

He, however, said the process would be concluded shortly.

Benjamin expressed regret about inconveniences the measure might cause the candidates affected during the ongoing registration exercise in the state.

He said the board routinely monitored its operations and promptly addressed challenges reported by candidates.

Benjamin reaffirmed the board’s commitment to continuously improving its processes to ensure all candidates were treated with dignity and respect.
