  • Lagos to host three-day generative AI education summit for university stakeholders

Lagos to host three-day generative AI education summit for university stakeholders

A three-day Generative AI Education Summit focusing on university-level computer science education is scheduled to take place in Lagos from February 18 to 20.

The summit is being organised by VarsityMentor, a non-profit organisation, under a mandate funded by the GenAI in CS Education Consortium established by the University of San Diego.

It is aimed at addressing gaps in computer science education and aligning African university curricula with emerging developments in artificial intelligence.

According to the organisers, the event will convene academic staff from several African universities alongside technology professionals and founders to examine how artificial intelligence can be integrated into teaching, learning and curriculum development.

Founder of VarsityMentor, Obinna Anya, said the initiative is focused on preparing graduates to play active roles in the global technology ecosystem, rather than remaining passive users of digital tools.

The summit will focus on three areas: curriculum development, with sessions involving faculty members and industry experts on incorporating AI-driven development and ethics into computer science courses; policy alignment, through engagement with education ministry officials to support nationally recognised standards; and talent development, aimed at strengthening links between universities and the technology sector for internships and employment opportunities.

A panel session featuring technology founders will also be held, with discussions centred on industry expectations and skills gaps. Valerie Ehimhen, a Technical Program Manager at Google Quantum AI and co-founder of the PETGA Initiative, said closer collaboration between academia and industry is necessary to ensure graduates acquire relevant technical skills.

Also speaking on the theme of education infrastructure, software engineer Adekunle Adeyemo highlighted the need for strong systems-level thinking and reliability in building a sustainable technology ecosystem in Africa.

Media Consultant to VarsityMentor, Sir Peter Osamgbi, said the summit is expected to attract computer science lecturers, curriculum leads, department heads, education ministry representatives, and education innovators from 27 universities across Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Malawi, and Ethiopia.

The Lagos summit represents a shift in focus for VarsityMentor, which previously organised conferences centred on student development and employability. This edition, according to the organisers, places emphasis on institutional reform and curriculum standards within African universities.

VarsityMentor was founded in 2021 as a non-profit organisation that connects African university students with technology professionals in the diaspora for mentoring, skills development, and career guidance.
