MacArthur Foundation backs learning, research in ABU with $15m

Macarthur Foundation Africa has revealed that it had supported Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria with over $15,538,896 to enhance learning and research.

Its director, Dr. Kole Shettima, made this known while presenting ABU’s Diamond Jubilee Public Lecture, titled, “The Challenges of Quality Higher Education in Africa”.

Shettima said the foundation was very excited about its interventions at ABU Zaria, adding that part of its support to the institution include installation of fibre optics.

He added that it also included linking of the ABU Teaching Hospital, Shika to the University’s Samaru and Kongo campuses.

“The foundation also supported 67 Ph.d and 87 masters’ students among other interventions.

“I appeal to the government and other key stakeholders to increase funding and transparency in the higher education sector in Nigeria.

“The transparency and accountability component of our support is to ensure efficiency in service delivery in the sector, and stem the ‘Japa Syndrome’,” he said.

Shettima urged the alumni of ABU to support their alma-mater to augment government efforts to salvage the institution from its numerous challenges.

Prof. Kabiru Bala, the Vice-Chancellor of ABU, acknowledged the long-term relationship between the Foundation and ABU.

Bala stressed that beside TETFund, no individual, local or international organisation had supported the University like MacArthur Foundation.

“The university community remains indebted to the director of the foundation for its support in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure, digitisation and automation of libraries and establishment of some centres.

“The centres established include the Centre for Development Communication; Rural Finance; Veterinary Public Health and Reproductive Health among others,” the vice-chancellor said.

He noted that ABU was established in 1962 and the Diamond Jubilee Celebration ought to have been celebrated in Oct/Nov. 2022, but the industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) made it impossible until now.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Munnir Ja’afaru, urged government to prioritise funding of tertiary education in Nigeria, adding that education was the bedrock of the nation’s development.

He said it was a collective responsibility to ensure that these tertiary institutions had the necessary resources to flourish.

Ja’afaru urged the alumni of ABU to rally together and aid the institution as ABU had become a national asset that must be protected from potential collapse.

Varsity sets up factory for tablets production

Igbinedion University, Okada in Edo State, said it has set up a tablets manufacturing factory to meet the local needs of its teaching hospital and the host community.

Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, vice-chancellor of the university, disclosed this yesterday during the 13th oath- taking/induction ceremony for 101 pharmacy graduates of the 2022/2023 session.

He explained that the facility was domiciled in the Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical technology in the university.

“It was designed for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research, extemporaneous compounding as well as production of tablets.

“The institution has also built an automated line for the production of antiseptics, disinfectants and reagents.

“This will further strengthen our teaching and research, and to meet the immediate aseptic needs of the University Teaching Hospital and other health institutions in the state,” he said.

The vice-chancellor, thereafter, urged the inductees to cultivate a sense of purpose in their profession.

Rather than be just dispensers of medicine, Ezemonye advised the new pharmacists to be advocates for premium health and well-being.

Performing the oath-taking on the inductees, Mr. Ibrahim Ahmed, Registrar, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN), urged them to maintain ethical standards of the profession.

The council, he said, frowned seriously at professional misconduct of any sort and would not hesitate to sanction any erring member.

The registrar urged the inductees to take their internship programme seriously and specialise while building their careers.

Meanwhile, in his induction lecture, Chief Paul Enebeli described the role of pharmacy in healthcare delivery as pivotal that needed to be optimised.

In the lecture titled, he said the role of a pharmacist as the most accessible healthcare provider had expanded to include a wide range of services for individual and community health.

These functions of pharmacists, he noted, were presently underutilised, and the potential roles in patient care could be seen as a missed opportunity to improve the health system of Nigeria.

Enebeli, however, called on the Federal Government to immediately remove all obstacles to the implementation of the Pharmacist Consultant Cadre Circular as approved by the government in 2020.

This, he said, was to enable the Nigerian people to benefit from the services of consultant pharmacists.

“There is an urgent need for pharmacists to take their rightful place in the health care sector in Nigeria, and to make maximum use of our training, knowledge, skills and competencies at our disposal.

The guest speaker concluded by calling on the government to open the headship of tertiary health institutions to all the groups of professionals in the healthcare system.

  • JPTS clarifies misconceptions about institute

    JPTS clarifies misconceptions about institute

An education firm, Joint Professionals Training and Support International (JPTS), has called on the public to get abreast of what  the institution stands for, saying that it is necessary to make it clear in disregard to the wrong impressions created by few persons.

In a statement by the school’s Director of Public Affairs, Amb. Emeagi Emeka Williams,  he alleged some individuals have peddled disinformation about the institute which the management deemed necessary to strengthen.

“The attention of the management of the JPTS Institute had been drawn to the fact that certain individuals have created a wrong impression about the school and its founding essence, thus have also misguided prospective academic pursuits while the need for urgent clarification becomes necessary.

“It is therefore the wish of the management to clarify that; contrary to what many citizens who do not clearly know the school think, the JPTS Institute is never a university but an institution created for diverse professional trainings in different fields within its coverage space, ” the statement explained.

It further clarified that the institution’s Professional Certifications are recognised and accepted for employment offers, credits transfer and evaluation into various higher institutions.

“That the Healthcare  Management students of the institute, although may not be absorbed for attachment by other government healthcare establishments still enjoy strategic benefits and quality work relationship with other bodies globally.

“This is because some students from other establishments are unable to adequately and convincingly prove their worth when merged with JPTS graduands. That the management places high premium on practical experiences for students beyond lecture rooms seems to attract beneficiaries of the scholarship scheme

who after obtaining O’ Level results, automatically enrol at the Institution on scholarship,” it added.

The statement went further notified the public that JPTS scholarships are in a different dimensions, stating that some students get Professional Certificate scholarship with JPTS while others get University scholarship which is done abroad.

“JPTS is an International Organization registered to operate as a Professional Training Organization in the US, UAE, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. The institute is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission and it offers a wide range of professional certificated trainings  from the field of oil and gas, Management, Health & Safety among others.

“We state clear that JPTS does not offer or award degree, Ordinary National Diploma and Higher National Diploma Program, and do not represent any University in Nigeria.

“Under the aforementioned, JPTS management is happy to humbly disabuse the minds of those who have been ill-informed  about our institution and that JPTS remains committed to the course of building a better society through strategic educational intervention with a bias for the indigent or less privileged ones,

“It is also our obligation to ensure that Africans are given access to education in a more  affordable way owing to the poor financial background of many African homes which have lots of limited young ones seeking to access education,” it added.
