    Varsity appoints board member

    Venite University, Iloro Ekiti, has appointed Dr. Olatise Olalekan Olayinka to its governing board. His diverse professional background as a Consultant Physician/Nephrologist and his unwavering commitment to medical excellence promises to usher in a new era of transformative education and holistic growth of the university.

    He graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from University of Jos in 1998. This marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to the medical field.

    His pursuit of excellence continued as he became a fellow of the National Post-Graduate Medical College of Nigeria in Nephrology in June 2010. Dr. Olatise’s thirst for knowledge also led him to the University of Liverpool, where he obtained a Diploma in Transplantation and a Master’s in Transplantation Science, solidifying his expertise in the field.

    Olatise’s professional journey began at the Military Hospital in Yaba, Lagos, where he served as a House Officer from 1999 to 2000. He fulfilled his one-year National Youth Service Corp obligation at the Nigerian Army Medical Centre, Bonny Camp, Victoria Island, Lagos, from 2000 to 2001. His dedication to the medical profession shone as he embarked on a residency at the Jos University Teaching Hospital from 2003 to July 2009, honing his skills and knowledge.

    As a Consultant Physician/Nephrologist, Dr. Olatise’s contributions to the field of medicine have been profound. His role at Garki Hospital, Abuja, from June 2010 to May 2011, allowed him to excel in general nephrology, renal transplantation, dialysis, and general medicine, further establishing his expertise.

    His leadership at Zenith Medical and Kidney Centre, Abuja, as a consultant Nephrologist/physician since 2011, demonstrates his dedication to improving healthcare. In 2014, he assumed the role of Head of the Department of Internal Medicine at Asokoro District Hospital, Abuja, where his expertise as a consultant physician/nephrologist continues to positively impact patients’ lives.

    He serves as the coordinator of the International Society of Nephrology, a role that makes him the Chief of Nephrology in Africa’s only interventional Nephrology training centre. His international exposure, including attending the Nephrologists School in Prague, Czech Republic, has enriched his understanding of global healthcare trends.

    Olatise is a member in esteemed organisations such as the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Nigeria Association of Nephrologists (NAN), Transplant Association of Nigeria (TAN), American College of Physicians (ACP), and European Renal Association (ERA).

    His diverse background in nephrology and general medicine ensures that Venite University’s medical programmes will be imbued with cutting-edge knowledge and practical experience.

    How medical college helps Nigeria save billions of dollars

    President of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, Ijanikin, Lagos State, Prof. Akin Osibogun, has said the college has produced over 7,900 medical and dental specialists, saving the country billions of dollars in postgraduate medical training abroad and the cost of overseas patient care.

    Osibogun said about 10,000 resident doctors were also undergoing training in various approved centres across the country.

    He spoke last week at the college’s 41st convocation of 413 new postgraduate fellows and 92 doctors of medicine.

    Osibogun, a professor of Public Health at College of Medicine, LUTH, noted that brain drain has, however, compounded the problem of inadequate number of skilled medical and dental professionals.

    He said it continues to be a huge threat to the accomplishment of the college’s mandate of producing the needed specialist medical/dental manpower for the country.

    Osibogun said the “Japa” syndrome has caused a reduction in the number of candidates applying for its fellowship examinations.”

    He added that if not urgently addressed, it might create a spiral in which the inadequacy in available manpower would be compounded.

    “This challenge (brain drain) should be on the front-burner of the national agenda for policy-making and action. We need to put in place mechanisms to train more and retain more trained manpower through improved work climate and conditions of service, including financial and non-financial incentives. The time for action is now,” he said.

    He urged the graduates to continue to represent the college well and be worthy ambassadors of the institution in character and learning.

    In his lecture entitled: “Towards better and longer lives for all Nigerians: Challenges and solutions”, Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya, noted that life expectancy remains low in the country.

    To address the issue, he said: “Improving the quality of life includes promoting sound mental health. A starting point is provision of adequate security in all its forms – security of life and property, food security and financial security are but three important areas.

    “There is deep hunger in the land. Beyond distributing fertilisers, the food chain value system needs to be expanded. Measures needed include large mechanisation of farmlands and development of high-yielding seedlings.

    “Governance must continue to fulfill its constitutional mandate to protect Nigeria. The armed forces are obviously doing their best, but the non-kinetic aspects need to be strengthened.”

    Ondo Reps member empowers 200 pupils

    Over 200 secondary school pupils have benefitted from the education empowerment project of Festus Adefiranye, who is representing Ileoluji/Okeigbo/Odigbo Federal Constituency.

    Adefiranye gave exercise books and cash gifts to selected pupils across the constituency on school resumption for a new academic session.

    The gifts, he said, were aimed at supporting the young children in their education pursuit.

    At the prize-giving, award and back-to-school ceremony held at St Mark’s Anglican Primary School,  Ore in Odigbo Local Government, Adefiranye, who had earlier sponsored a summer coaching programme for all the pupils, said the summer school was for every pupil in the constituency.

    He explained that his representation should not be limited to only law-making, stressing that the young generation needs all the support they can get in their education to help them realise their vision in life.

    The lawmaker also unveiled his plan to roll out personal palliatives for a good number of his constituents as a way of alleviating the impact of fuel subsidy removal.

    Adefiranye also assured his constituents of President Bola Tinubu’s determination to increase education budget for the desired improvement in the sector.

    The guest speaker at the ceremony, Ag. Director General/Chief Executive, National Institute for  Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA-NIGERIA) in Ondo State, Dr.  Shofoyeke David, praised the lawmaker for supporting youths whom he described as future leaders.

    He said the N50,000 education support per pupil would go a long way in defraying the cost of education materials for the pupils, adding that it would be a relief for their parents.

    The ceremony was attended by some traditional rulers and leaders of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the constituency.

    Taraba announces new packages for NYSC members, SS3 pupils

    The Taraba State Government has approved a 200 per cent increase in monthly, medical and accommodation allowances of youth corps members serving in government schools to N125,000 as well as automatic employment.

    A statement by the Commissioner of Information Zainab Usman Jalingo said the Governor, Agbu Kefas, said the provision of free basic education in the state had “yielded remarkable outcomes within a short span”.

    It added that “the surge in new enrolments witnessed in our primary and secondary schools over the past 10 working days has necessitated immediate action.”

    She described the step as a “bold” measure towards the provision of free and improved basic education.

    “As an emergency response to the education situation, the governor has approved significant allowances for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in Taraba State schools.

    “An additional N10,000 will be added to their monthly allowance. A one-time payment of N50,000 as medical allowance, an accommodation allowance of N25,000 per term, totaling N75,000 for three terms.

    “Exceptional Youth Corp members, who distinguish themselves while serving in schools, will be offered automatic employment opportunities,” the statement read.

    According to the commissioner, her ministry would collaborate with the Commissioner of Youth and Sports to ensure the timely implementation of the new packages for the youth corps members.

    Jalingo listed other measures, which include the introduction of ICT-based registration for teachers as well as new and returning students, provision of uniforms and educational materials.

    Also, shoes, socks and books would be made available by January to support students in their pursuit of education.

    Others are sponsorship for SS3 students, which would cover their examination fees for both WAEC and NECO examinations.

    “Exceptional students will be eligible for sponsorship and scholarships,” the commissioner stated.

    The statement added: “Adult learners seeking new enrollment should be directed to the various mass education centres, ensuring accessibility to education for all.

    “Schools that have reached their maximum capacity in terms of facilities will implement a shifting system temporarily while additional buildings are provided to meet the increasing demand.”

    40 American varsities participate at education fair

    Education USA in Nigeria has held its 22nd annual College fair for graduates and prospective international students to learn directly from admission officers from 40 universities in the United States of America.

    Students from over 30 schools were put through application requirements, scholarship opportunities, research options for graduate schools, financing of graduate school, how to apply for student Visa, among others.

    The fair was held last week at Ecobank Pan African Centre Victoria Island and at Pistis Hub, Ikeja, Lagos.

    The event recorded high turnout of students, parents, teachers, guardians and admission officers from American colleges and universities.

    Consul General of the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, Will Stevens, in his address, noted that nearly 15,000 Nigerian students are currently in U.S., adding that Nigeria is one of the top 10 countries in the world that sends students to the U.S..

    According to Stevens, Nigerians studying in the U.S., are open to world-class connections, research organisations and companies and liable to become founders of top-class  companies.

    “We are here today from all over the United States to recruit Nigerian students and help them come and study both in undergraduate and graduate programmes.

    “U.S. obviously presents some of the best opportunities for education and economic growth. It gives students from Nigeria the chance to come learn, work and make connections. If they want to innovate in agriculture, health, technology, whatever it may be that they’ve studied in the U.S, they bring that back home to Nigeria, and it helps grow the economy here, and we see it over and over again,” he said.

    Stevens also reiterated that there is provision for scholarships opportunities for students and graduates, who could not completely pay for their tuition.

    “One of the great things about U.S. universities, particularly private universities, is they have funds to support international studies. They help bring students in, who maybe cannot pay the full fees. They offer discounts and fees. They offer scholarships and grants. They offer work-study programmes for people who can’t cover the full cost for tuition, but have a 20-hour-a-week job to pay for housing. They have a lot of opportunities. That’s one of the great things about international studies.

    “We have scholarships that we offer here through the consulate to provide education funds to people to take tests, like the SATs or provide counseling here, right in the  American Centre, at our Consulate General, here in Lagos. People can come in and get additional counseling support to try to find the right programme.

    We have experts who really know all about the different universities,” he added.

    Guidance Counselor of Lagoon School, Mrs. Angela Ekwem, said students of the school have benefited tremendously from the fair over the years.

    Her words: “We have a very large percentage of our students studying in America, some are done schooling. We have recorded tremendous results having gone through EducationUSA. Some are returning first class, some are getting awards, some are being recognized internationally for their academic performances.”

    A pupil at Grace High School Lagos, Oluchi Adeghi, told The Nation that the fair was explicit, adding: “I have been able to learn more.”

    • Wife rebuilds school, equips clinic

    Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has inaugurated a school and clinic, reconstructed and fully equipped by his wife, Amina Oyiza Bello, for the Eika-Ohizenyi community in Okehi Local Government Area.

    In appreciation of the efforts of his wife to change the fortunes of her people through the initiatives, the governor declared free education for pupils of the school as well as secondment of teachers to strengthen its man-power’s need.

    The projects were financed by the governor’s wife through her pet project, Hayat Foundation.

     Bello urged other privileged citizens to contribute their resources, no matter how little, to the development of their communities.

    The two projects were unveiled to celebrate the 16th birthday of the governor’s first son, Hayatula Bello, in whose name Hayat Foundation was initiated.

    Inaugurating the projects – Eika-Ohizenyi Community Clinic and Al-Dabiya Primary and Secondary School – Bello lauded the vision of the founding fathers of the school initially conceived and operated as an Islamic school but later expanded to offer both Islamic and Western education.

    He also revealed that the administration would ensure construction of the access road to the school in addition to the provision of a bus to facilitate academic activities.

    On her part, the governor’s wife said the projects signified special home-coming for her, noting that the clinic would run three days free medicare for residents of the community.

    Thrilled by the joy and excitement of her people as a result of the projects, she narrated how she had always been inspired to make a difference in the lives of the people through selfless services and supports.

    She lauded her husband for providing whole-hearted support for the success of the projects, noting that he had been there for her and Hayat Foundation in its undertakings.

    Bello called on the youths to make themselves available in the service of the society, urging them to contribute their time and skills through community volunteering with a view to adding positive values to their environment.

    • N146b spent on 10,227 scholars

    The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has inaugurated an ad-hoc committee on the establishment of central multipurpose laboratories in selected universities in the country.

    Executive Secretary, TETFund, Sonny Echono, while inaugurating the committee in Abuja, said the move was part of efforts to provide relevant infrastructure to aid research in the country.

    He said it was universally accepted that innovative research and its commercialisation was clearly the driver of economic growth and prosperity in the contemporary world.

    He added that the “Academic Staff Training and Development Intervention Programme had enabled the fund to sponsor over 10,227 academic staff for foreign Masters and PhD programmes at the cost of over N146 billion, out of which 1,017 were sponsored for bench work at the cost of over N5 billion.”

    He said: “However, upon return of the scholars to their various institutions, many were unable to share the knowledge acquired and replicate their experiences due largely to the research infrastructure deficit in their institutions.”

    The TETFund boss added: “It is imperative to make conscious efforts to not only develop our human capital but to also provide research infrastructure to support innovative research and development on a sustainable basis.

    “It is indeed a key pre-requisite for accelerated national development and global competitiveness.”

    Echono also said the agency was deploying billions of naira to fund research programmes and projects with a view to deepening the institutionalisation of research and development to tackle national challenges.

    Echono said: “You will recall that the fund has so far awarded 727 research grants to researchers from public tertiary institutions at the cost of over N18 billion under the National Research Fund (NRF) to undertake applied research in various academic disciplines.

    “It was observed that some of these scholars who have benefited from the NRF grants have often requested that, to complete the execution of the research projects may require them to cross international borders.

    “This is in a view to access certain facilities/equipment due to lack of requisite research facilities in their institutions.

    “In some cases, these tend to affect the financial burden associated with the research projects, coupled with time expended for travelling.”

    Echono said the committee has former Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan, Emeritus Professor Olufemi Bamiro, as chairperson, and had been given one month to submit its report.

    In his acceptance speech, Bamiro, who lauded Echono for setting up the committee, expressed the readiness of the team to deliver on the assigned task.

    “This will surely go a long way in rejuvenating research and training in research in our nation state,” he said.

    Other members of the committee are Prof. Ekanem Braide, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, Prof. Suleiman Mustapha, Prof. Yusuf Saidu, Prof. Nasir Fagge, Prof. Abubakar Sambo, Prof. Ibrahim Katampe and Mallam Buhari Mikailu.

    Youths urged to evolve indigenous solutions to climate change crisis

    Regional Centre of Expertise, RCE Ogun, Covenant University, has sounded the alarm on the need for active participation at all level to give attention to the recurrent issue of climate change as it affects the country, Africa and the world.

    Its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abiodun H. Adebayo, said this when he declared the 2023 Local Conference of Youths (LCOY) Nigeria open at the university’s Centre for Research, Innovation and Discovery (CUCRID).

    Prof. Adebayo said green skill is a necessity for tackling the issues of climate change and benefiting from the green economy, stressing that the Covenant University was encouraged to play host to the LCOY, which is the official youth constituency of the Conference of Parties (COP).

    The theme of the LCOY was Building Resilient Systems for a Climate Smart Economy in Nigeria and was supported by Nestle, Dufil, Recycle Alliance, MTN and CHI Limited.

    According to him, the focus of the conference is to stimulate interest and build the foundation for green skills development among youths, particularly those around the university’s host community here in Ota.

    “Knowledge and skills are central to tackling climate change, as such we must begin to think how we can use our indigenous knowledge to solve the problems of climate change,” he stated.

    Prof. Adebayo said hosting LCOY in the university at the heels of the QS Africa Summit is an international validation of Covenant University’s commitment to the sustainable development goals (SDGs), especially as it pertains to the issue of climate change.

    He asked participants to interact and network, while taking advantage of the rich and robust experience of the speakers to get clarification on issues relating to the conference theme to enhance individual and institutional knowledge on the subject of climate change.

    Chair, Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) Ogun, Covenant University, Dr. Patience Tunji-Olayeni, said the subject of climate change is not one to anticipate, but one that the realities is here with us.

    Dr. Tunji-Olayeni noted that the only way to manage the challenge is to reduce its effect and also to learn how to adapt to it with young people being at the forefront of the discourse because they have a lot of energy and passion to run with any assignment and also because they constitute an enduring source of indigenous capacity for tackling climate change impact.

    “It is important for us to highlight the word indigenous capacity because it will be almost impossible to import capacity from another country to solve our climate change issues,” she stated.

    According to her, nations are trying to solve their own climate change problems. Countries do not have enough manpower for this. Financially endowed countries are attracting nationals of other countries to help solve their problems. We need to look inward as a people and think of how we can equip our people with the skills they need to tackle climate change.

    She said the issue of climate change is multidimensional that impacts several sectors of the economy and society, as such the need to start laying the foundational framework for evolving green skills in the area of agriculture, renewable energy, arts and community resilience.

    Dr. Tunji-Olayeni said it is not all doom and gloom on the subject of climate crisis, as it is still within the capacity of humans to manage it. “We need to take away from this conference a possibility mentality. The challenges of climate change can be very daunting but it is possible to manage it,” she enthused.

    Delivering a goodwill message at the opening, the Director, Ota Economic Summit Group, Mrs. Olajumoke Odeyemi, applauded participants both on the virtual and physical space of the conference for showing interest in being part of the solution by subscribing to attend the conference.

    Mrs. Odeyemi said in a world that many young people simply get distracted with things of no value, the interest displayed by young participants is one that gives hope to the nation and continent.

    She tasked the youths present to focus on all the training and presentations as knowledge that cannot be taken away from them is being imparted, noting that the forum was another opportunity to trigger the birth of a better Nigeria.

    The highlights of the three-day event were hands-on workshop sessions, work group, introduction to renewable energy, community volunteering and arts, with experienced and dynamic speakers from UNESCO, YOUNGO, UN, Covenant University, Soiless Lab, Creative Fingers Art Nexus and many others forming the base of the training sessions.

    Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu yesterday opened the Ogombo Senior High School, Ajah, with a promise to remain committed to promoting quality education.

    The school was built from the scratch by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), chaired by the governor’s wife, Mrs. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu.

    Sanwo-Olu noted that COWLSO, since its resuscitation by the First Lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, when she was wife of the governor, has continued to play a vital and complementary role to the government’s efforts, especially in achieving its THEMES+ Agenda in Education and Technology.

    He said: “These have been especially evident through its several initiatives that directly impact the lives of children, women, the elderly, youth, physically-challenged and the less-privileged. These initiatives, which cut across various sectors, have contributed to the growth and development of Lagos State in the last two decades.

    “The commissioning of this purpose-built 15-classroom block is another success story in the efforts of our administration to provide educational infrastructure for effective learning and teaching in a conducive  environment. It is important to note that this block of classrooms, comprising three floors, was designed with adequate provision for the needs of physically-challenged pupils. This is in compliance with global standards and our T.H.E.M.E.S+ policy thrust of not leaving anyone behind.”

    Mrs. Sanwo-Olu said the project was done in partnership with Lagos State Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS).

    She said: “This journey started in December 2021, when COWLSO realised that Ogombo community was in dire need of a secondary school. Students had to trek for over an hour to neighbouring communities to access secondary education.

    “This led to the swift intervention of COWLSO in embarking on this building project, which is in line with the founding objectives of the committee, to impact lives positively and contribute immensely to the political and socio-economic development of Lagos State.

    “Standing before us today is a fully equipped three-floor educational structure, comprising 15 ultra-modern classrooms, 30 toilets, libraries, laboratories, ICT Center, offices for teaching and management staff, as well as a well-equipped sick bay.

    “There are also staircases and a ramp to ease movement for physically-challenged persons. To the Glory of God Almighty, this magnificent edifice was completed in November 2022.”
