UNN final-year student, others win cars in Powell Homes realtors’ reward scheme

A 600-level student of Dentistry and Surgery at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Anikworji Chukwuemeka Joel, has emerged among the top-performing realtors honoured with brand-new car prizes by Powell Homes and Shelters Ltd for outstanding performance in marketing the company’s estates across Nigeria.

Joel and four others received the car gifts during the real estate firm’s Mid-Year Realtors’ Feast, held at the International Conference Centre, Independence Layout, Enugu. Several other realtors were also rewarded with iPhones, refrigerators, generators, and home appliances for their exceptional efforts.

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of Powell Homes, Architect Chibuikem Emmanuel Onyekachi, said the initiative was part of the company’s commitment to reward hard work and motivate its realtors.

“This is our way of encouraging those who have gone the extra mile in helping us grow and reach more clients across the country,” he said.

Onyekachi reiterated the company’s dedication to professionalism, innovation, and customer satisfaction in real estate development. He also noted that the biannual reward programme is designed to empower and retain top-performing staff and partners as the company expands its footprint nationwide.

According to him, “We started this journey with a clear sense of purpose — to transform the housing experience for both the sellers and the buyers.

“What we’re building isn’t just property; we’re nurturing trust, creating opportunities, and opening doors to a better future.

“Our belief is that when people are empowered through access to decent shelter, they become more confident and productive. That’s the kind of difference Powell Homes wants to make — one home at a time.”

“Realtors’ Feast, which happens twice a year, is an avenue where we give items to our reliable and hardworking realtors, staff, and partners.

“It is a reward mechanism and a platform for bonding and exchange of progressive ideas.

“Today, we are distributing 5 brand-new cars as well as other items such as iPhones, TV sets, refrigerators, and other home appliances to our active realtors, staff, and partners. We even go all out to say ‘thank you’ to those who believe in our dream and make it their own.

“This year’s turnout of over 1,000 active real estate partners, who are mostly young persons, shows that many young Nigerians are committed to solving housing problems with integrity and sincerity, and we are proud to walk that journey with them,” he further stated.

Also speaking, Veteran Nollywood actress and brand ambassador of Powell Homes and Shelters Ltd, Mrs. Patience Ozokwo, popularly known as Mama G, praised the company for making housing a realistic dream for many young Nigerians.

She stated that the company had provided an opportunity for realtors and other real estate practitioners to take pride in the value they are offering society, while also praising their top-notch customer care services.

She also applauded Architect Onyekachi for his commitment to providing trustworthy services for customers, adding that he has distinguished himself amongst others in the real estate sector.

Speaking on behalf of other winners, the student, Mr. Anikworji Chukwuemeka Joel, expressed surprise and joy, calling the reward a motivation to do more in the real estate space.

“Being gifted with this car feels like a dream. I joined Powell Homes and Shelters Ltd not knowing what to expect, but I found a team that welcomed me and guided me.

“Being a student and also part of something this big is very encouraging. It shows that hard work for the company really pays,” he said.

Scheduled to be held at the Great Independence Hall on UI’s campus in Ibadan from around 11:00 AM, the event will mark another milestone in the association’s sustained efforts to support and enhance student life at the university.

According to a statement issued by the alumni, the installation of the public address system is expected to improve hall-wide communication, bolster coordination of student activities, and foster a stronger sense of community among residents.

The statement also said the commissioning will be led by Professor Joseph Olutayo Yaniwura, a retired professor of statistics and one of the pioneer occupants of Independence Hall.

His participation, organisers say, highlights the enduring legacy and continued involvement of past occupants in the development of the hall.

In addition to the commissioning, the ceremony will feature the formal unveiling of the GIHAA’s new alumni logo—an emblem designed to reflect the unity, heritage, and forward-looking values of the association.

  • Stakeholders seek legislation to combat bullying

Stakeholders seek legislation to combat bullying

Stakeholders have called on the National Assembly to enact a law that would support the fight against bullying in the country.

They noted that bullying was destructive and a killer of dreams that must not be given place in schools across all levels in the country.

The stakeholders rejected bullying and called on students, parents and others to kick it out of the school environment as well as the society.

The stakeholders, who included Ministers of State for Education and Humanitarian Affairs: Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad; Yusuf Tanko Sununu and Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, spoke at the National Stakeholders’ Summit on Bullying Prevention and Support with the theme: “Unite Against Bullying: A Multi-Stakeholder Approach to Legislative and Social Change,” organised by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement, Sunday Asefon in collaboration with United Women Voice International Foundation in Abuja.

Ahmad condemned the rising cases of bullying, especially among students, which she noted in some cases, lead to death or student’s withdrawal from school, anxiety, and other psychological effects.

She highlighted ongoing efforts of the Federal Ministry of Education aimed at tackling the menace, disclosing that the ministry has gone beyond policy pronouncement against bullying to setting up of a taskforce for enforcement.

She said: “Bullying in whatever form is unacceptable. It needs a multisectoral approach, combining policy, awareness campaigns, training and mental health services. The Ministry has done so much including the launch of a national anti-bullying policy in our schools, which was launched on the 5th of May 2025.”

On his part, Olawande reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu to building a safer society for young people in the country, insisting that stakeholders must rise to the occasion of protecting and empowering young Nigerians.

Olawande, who insisted that bullying must not have a place in schools in Nigeria, enlisted the support of parents, teachers, traditional and religious leaders, media and other stakeholders to address the challenge of bullying both in schools and in society, while also noting that the task is enormous for the government alone to tackle.

Sununu expressed concerns about rising cases of bullying in schools in Nigeria, saying bullying is commonly reported in Nigeria, where many studies give a rate of 21-82 per cent in terms of prevalence in the nation’s institutions.

“The most typical one that has a prevalence of almost 62% is physical bullying, which can involve physical harm, such as hitting, kicking, pushing, or damaging property,” he said.

Sununu commended the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement, Sunday Asefon and other partners for organising the summit, which he noted was apt and timely.

Earlier, Asefon described bullying as a national crisis requiring multi-sectoral approaches to address, hence the decision to organise the summit where experts and stakeholders including partners in advocacy, educators, government officials, students and child protection stakeholders, gather to brainstorm on prevention, awareness and solution.

He said: “Across Nigeria today, bullying whether physical, verbal, psychological, or online has become a destructive force. It undermines mental health, disrupts academic performance, and threatens the safety of our learning environments.

“It is no longer a series of isolated incidents or unfortunate elements of ‘school culture’; it is a national challenge demanding a unified, multi-sectoral response.

“Today’s summit, themed ‘Unite Against Bullying: A Multi-Stakeholder Approach to Legislative and Social Change,’ speaks to both our shared vision and collective action required across government institutions, educational systems, communities, and digital platforms to ensure that every child and student feels protected, valued, and empowered.

“It is our declaration that enough is enough. We are here because we believe: no child should suffer in silence; no parent should fear sending their child to school and no school should ignore cries for help disguised as ‘discipline’ or ‘growing pains.”

Hundreds of students drawn from both secondary schools and tertiary institutions across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) participated in the summit.

One of the participants, Bessong Chikeyen Enu from Federal Government Girls College (FGGC) Abaji, highlighted the negative impact of bullying among students, saying her school introduced various measures to check the menace.

  • NABTEB registrar: Reviving technical education key to Nigeria’s economic recovery

NABTEB registrar: Reviving technical education key to Nigeria’s economic recovery

The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), Dr. Mohammed Aminu, has stressed that Nigeria’s path to economic recovery and long-term prosperity lies in revitalising vocational and technical education.

Aminu disclosed this during a recent monitoring visit to two NABTEB examination centres in Lagos—Government Technical College, Agidingbi, Ikeja, and the Federal Science and Technical College (FSTC), Yaba.

Speaking after the visit, the registrar expressed satisfaction with the facilities and student conduct, particularly praising the Lagos State Government for its heavy investment in technical education.

“I’m amazed by what I’ve seen here. If all technical colleges across the country were like this, I’d be the happiest person. The workshops are equipped with modern, standard tools that reflect today’s technological demands. This is not just education; it’s practical readiness,” he said.

The visit, according to Aminu, was part of his national oversight responsibility to assess NABTEB examinations, inspect facilities, and engage stakeholders to promote continuous improvement in technical education.

He used the opportunity to call for a nationwide revival of technical and vocational training institutions, warning that Nigeria’s overdependence on imports and lack of local production capacity—exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic—posed a serious economic threat.

“COVID-19 was a wake-up call. It revealed our inability to produce or maintain essential tools and services locally. Any country that neglects technical and vocational education is courting economic disaster. We must bring back our trade centres and technical colleges—artisans, technicians, and craftsmen are the backbone of any productive economy,” he warned.

Aminu also criticised the country’s obsession with paper qualifications, advocating instead for a shift toward skill-based training as practised in more advanced economies.

“In Nigeria, employment depends on degrees and PhDs. But elsewhere, employers want to see what you can do, not what certificate you hold.”

Aminu praised the Federal Government’s current push for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), led by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, calling on citizens to support the initiative.

“If well implemented, this initiative will boost our GDP, reduce dependency, and move us toward self-sufficiency,” he said.

Reflecting on his history with the Federal Science and Technical College, Yaba, which he previously visited in 1981, 1989, and 1995, Dr. Aminu commended the transformation he witnessed during his 2025 visit.

“I was impressed by the improvement. The electrical department and the leadership team deserve high praise. This school has been a cornerstone of technical development in Nigeria.”

He also noted that the Yaba College, along with its Kaduna counterpart, was once at the forefront of Nigeria’s technical education system.

“Yaba and Kaduna were our flagship technical colleges. Sadly, Kaduna is struggling today. But Yaba is still holding strong, and I encourage the team to keep it up.”

Also speaking during the tour, the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB), Moronke Azeez, welcomed the registrar’s positive assessment of Lagos’ technical education infrastructure.

“Despite the short notice of the visit, Dr. Mohammed was visibly impressed by what he saw — well-equipped workshops, standard classrooms, disciplined students. That speaks volumes about the commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to technical education,” she said.

Azeez also advocated for greater inclusivity in Nigeria’s education system.

“We must end the bias against technical education. Our youth should be allowed to choose freely between general and vocational education and supported equally. That is how we build a nation rich in skills and balanced in development,” she said.

The Principal of FSTC Yaba, Mrs. Ajayi Adebimpe, also highlighted the relevance of vocational education in today’s world, noting that most student projects in the school, including furniture and notebooks, are produced in-house.

“Our students are not just learning theory. They are applying their skills every day. This hands-on approach gives them real-world confidence,” she said.

She urged parents to encourage their children to pursue technical education for self-reliance and appealed to private sector stakeholders to partner with the government in expanding TVET capacity.

“We need more hostels and classrooms to take in more students. The demand is high, and we don’t want to turn anyone away from this life-changing opportunity,” she said.

A 15-year-old pupil of Anchor Springfield School, Lagos, Ms Adekunle Aliyah, has emerged overall winner of the Academic Excellence Initiative (AEI) 2025 Annual Award/Scholars’ Day.

She scored 84 per cent in the highly competitive quiz contest.

The event, held in Lagos, drew participation from 197 students across 63 schools. Munachi Emmanuella of Orisumibare Senior High School came second, while Muhammed Beyioku of Minbar-Minds College came third with 82 per cent.

Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Taiwo Fagbemi, commended the organisers for their commitment to youth development and described the event’s theme, Redefining Academic Excellence in the Era of Artificial Intelligence, as timely and forward-looking.

“It’s inspiring to see our young people engaging with the opportunities AI presents. While innovation carries risks, AI, when used creatively, holds immense potential to help young minds achieve extraordinary things,” he said.

Guest of Honour and former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Tunji Sarafa Isola, underscored the importance of education in national development.

He lamented how illiteracy and poverty have stifled Nigeria’s democratic progress, noting that education remains the strongest weapon for social and political transformation.

“What you have done here today, recognising and celebrating academic excellence, is a noble and inspiring gesture,” he said.

Delivering the keynote address, Research Director at the Healthy Africans Platform in the United States, Tunde Aborode took participants through the practical use of AI in sourcing and applying for scholarships.

He explained how artificial intelligence can simplify the search process, match students’ profiles with available opportunities, and even assist in fine-tuning application materials.

“AI can help you only if you help yourself. Know your story first, AI can only enhance it, not write it for you,” he said.

He added that AI tools can prepare applicants for interviews by generating likely questions based on public data from past scholarship recipients and online platforms.

According to him, using AI responsibly can give students a critical edge in accessing local and international funding opportunities.

Apart from the quiz competition, AEI – a non-governmental organisation, provides weekly coaching, leadership development, and youth orientation programmes.

This year’s event also featured remarks from Dr. Nasir Baba-Ahmed, CEO of Octagon Cybersecurity in France, and Prince Michael Adewoye, Director of Racy and Sturdy Schools, Lagos, who offered career advice and encouragement to the students.

Outstanding varsity students to get N50m grant, says Fed Govt

Outstanding students of public universities are to receive a N50 million venture capital grant, the Federal Government has said.

The government explained that the grant is open to students in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEMM) fields.

It added that the initiative is for high-achieving STEMM students in Nigerian universities, starting from 300 Level.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced this yesterday in Abuja at the inauguration of the Research and Innovation Commercialisation Committee (RICC).

Alausa said the initiative would be rolled out between September and October this year.

He said the fund was set up through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) in partnership with the Bank of Industry (BoI).

The minister said the panel, led by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), Dr. Tayo Aduloju, is also expected to give out eligibility criteria for the grant.

He said: “As we work as a government to move our country to move from a resource-based to a knowledge-based economy, we also have to work to help our students and citizens to unleash their innate capabilities. We have tens of thousands of these students across our institutions who are geniuses, but they need the opportunity.

“So, the government, through TETFund, has set up a student grant venture capital initiative. We will give up to N50 million grants for students who are at 300 Level and above in any of our tertiary institutions to scale up their new businesses or already existing businesses they are about to scale up.”

The education minister described the constitution of the panel to drive bench-to-market research commercialisation as a strategic initiative that aligns with the ministry’s overarching goal of repositioning Nigeria’s higher education sector as a catalyst for national development.

The minister said the committee’s terms of reference include to: bridge the research-to-market gap by fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and government; establish an enabling framework for co-creation, funding, incubation, and scale-up of innovations emerging from Nigerian tertiary institutions and facilitate matchmaking and partnerships between researchers and industry players with a market need.

Others are to: promote policy alignment that supports innovation financing, intellectual property rights, and ease of doing business; drive localisation and adaptation of global technologies to solve local problems, and conduct any other activity that will facilitate the realisation of the committee’s mandate.

The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, described the initiative as a significant step towards promoting research and innovation in Nigerian universities.

Also, the TETFund Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono, urged committee members to work diligently to ensure that the initiative achieves its objectives and contributes to the country’s economic development.

Echono hailed Alausa for his massive support towards ensuring the success of the fund’s initiatives.

Dr. Aduloju assured that the panel would work tirelessly to develop a robust framework for the commercialisation of research outputs as well as identify and support innovative projects that have the potential to drive economic growth and development in Nigeria.
