  • Year of accelerate dart-conomy

    Year of accelerate dart-conomy

The pointers are already visible that the year 2025 will be a time for artists to indulge in more works to improve their personal economy. Even in the mainstream culture, artists and technocrats are hopeful as they have put in place different programmes to re-engineer the creative economy in all aspects. Edozie Udeze takes a closer look at some of the events that will make a whole lot of difference.

It seems from the onset that the energy in the culture sector is bound to create more new prospects, much better and stronger than the past years.  Artists and stakeholders have already begun to point towards an accelerated push that will make 2025 more gloriouis for the sector.  A lot of associations, societies, artists’ groups, parastatals and more have indicated their willingness to reorder their programmes and plans to go along with the dream to fit into the creative economy.  Some even call it art-conomy.

This time around, there will be a boisterous future as more concerted efforts, actions and creations than mere boastfulness will be on the lips of everybody.  As usual, The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), is set to hit the stage running.  The president Dr. Dipo Akanbi, a leader like no other hinted on the plans for ANA to reorder its annual programmes to synchronise with the urgent needs of members.  It will no logner be business in the usual and routinely ways.  ANA has concluded plans to be more proactive, more result oriented where members work hard, and earn money, earn recognition and aspire to be more recognized both at home and abroad.

For a start, the Ken Saro Wiwa  international residency programme will commence in earnest in 2025.  It will come in two different ways and styles.  The international arm of it will always include one Foreign writer and one Nigerian writer.  These two whenever or whatever is the basis to select them will be fully catered for by ANA.  The base is at the ever-ubiquitous and attractive ANA headquarters at Mpape in Abuja. A fully equipped encampment, the residency boasts of the latest and updated modern living quarters suitable for the creative minds.

The second category of writers will be selected locally based on zonal consideration.  These categories of writers are chosen from Nigeria. And it looks as if  the state chapters of ANA may have to make choices based on applications.  However, ANA national leadership also knows who can easily fit into the requirements.  Moreover, opportunity will be extended to some other rich and established authors who can apply but then have to sponsor themselves.  In any case, the residency is spacious enough to cater for all and sundry.  ANA will no longer converge in Ilorin or anywhere else for the usual annual state chairmen and secretaries meeting.  It will now hold at the Writers Resort in Abuja and those who cannot be present physically can link up on zoom.  For those who may come in person, accommodation is available at ANA Writers Resort which is pleasant, alluring and beckoning.

The annual Art Miabo Fine Art Festival will hold in 2025.  This time around, Art Miabo, a South African based Nigerian fine artists who is also a specialist in turning wastes to wealth, has titled her programme Art-conomy and she is ready to bring more artists together under one umbrella.  She usually brings artists from all over the world.  But this time around, her dream is to leverage on the opportunities of the creative economy appliances to excel.  Artists have indicated their willingness to be in Nigeria.  It will be time to taste and see how Nigerian artists are maximizing the prospects of the creative nuances in the economy to advance their creativity.  Already Miabo has set in place plans to place her theme within this parlance, hence art-conomy.  Art Miabo has consistently drawn world attention to the issue of wastes to wealth.  As this year comes on, it is obvious she will attract more followers.  Mostly all her artists, those who participate in her programmes also create wealth from wastes.  It is always a pleasure to see Miabo glow extensively due to her ability to grow herself and more people in this form of creativity and opportunities.

The National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, is now sitting resplendently on the crest of history.  The renovations have taken it to the point of being the beautiful bride once again.  As you approach the Theatre from the popular Entrance A, all you see are new innovations, new additional structure, with an iron fencing that has given it a new look.  The gardens are properly trimmed and maintained.  The walkways which were once neglected have been reintroduced giving it some semblance of life and modernity.  It is no more free entry, free exit.  Movements in and out of the Theatre will no longer be free or tolerated.  It is an idea introduced to safeguard guests and thespians who may be visiting the Theatre for cinemas and other programmes.

The interiors have been totally redesigned.  Old and archaic cinema halls and other compartments have been overhauled to meet modern needs.  And so the central air-conditioners have been restored.  What it then means is that 2025 will be the year for all social, cultural, theatrical programmes to return back to this apex culture edifice of Nigeria.  It is clear that clients have begun to jostle for space in and around the spacious esplanade. But it all depends on the agreement between the Bankers Committee who are handling the renovations and the Federal government of Nigeria.  But in all, the National Theatre is wearing a new look eager to serve multiple artistic and cultural purposes in 2025 and beyond.

Most private galleries in Nigeria have been having a fields day in recent times.  This is so because artists have been able to up their games.  The name Creative economy seems magical.  Art galleries have also reconsidered their terms of agreements with artists who chose to exhibit in their galleries.  Feelers from the sector point to the fact that galleries will be more open for business.  The sector is set to boom. It is clear some foreign galleries are better disposed to Nigerian visual pieces. 2025 is open for more negotiations to sponsor more artists abroad to showcase and popularize Nigerian art works.  Already many Nigeria artists abroad and at home are likely going to fit into the craze for animation on the internet.  Animated art pieces will finally dominate 2025 and beyond, creating more wealth thereby.

More plans are in the offing for Europeans and Americans to return more pillaged and stolen artefacts, sculptures and woodworks to Nigeria.  The year 2025 is when the museums in Lagos, Benin and some other states will be fully stocked with more new works that promote Nigeria’s historical records.  Artefacts draw people’s minds back into time and then tell people who they are from time immemorial.  As more artefacts return henceforth, so also will be the amount of reparation on the works.  Historical artefacts cost millions of naira and appreciate with time and age.  So, in 2025 all the museums concerned will welcome returned works that represent a greater Nigeria.

More dance troupes are going to spring up for artistes need to explore new grounds, more ideas.  Let us look forward to more glorious moments that will elevate the status of the sector in many ways ever.
